Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 14

D Money 02-10-2011 04:43 PM
Simple solution for a simple problem use SAE inverted flare tube nuts. Now its easy to find a Tee, they are easy to locate, and they can done on the softer steel oem brake lines.
Do you have a link to the tee you're talking about? Because the stock line has inverted SAE fittings so it will work, then for the other port on the tee I could use this.
^^^ Kendrick has an easy solution! also D, have you talked with johann about all the brake line stuff? He tried to explain to me about it all but I just got lost! Lol
Nope, I could give him a call. He knows his ****!!
Token-Negro 02-10-2011 04:56 PM

Stock lines have inverted flares but the fittings are metric not sae. So what im saying is get a brake line TEE thats for SAE threads.
Token-Negro 02-10-2011 04:59 PM

I guess you didnt look to hard for the metric brake line tee.

D Money 02-10-2011 08:20 PM

haha you have a funny way of helping people out. lol

So that metric tee will seal the two stock metric fittings on the rear brake lines? I need the inverted flare one, correct?

If I were to get a m10x1.0 do I need inverted flare for the MC and connections at the front wheels? Check the site you gave me, they have different ones. The ones I have are just the male adapters, so will they not work?

http://www.haltbrakes.com/stradpt.html

Here are the ones I got. They say they work with inverted or bubble flare

www.anplumbing.com/shop part number 592032
Token-Negro 02-10-2011 10:50 PM

D,
I'm not sure why these adapters keep coming up in conversation. You should be able to do your brake system with ZERO adapters. You just need 2 inverted flare tee's one for the front brake circuit one for the rear. Split the lines were ever its convenient. What you do at the frame of the car is up to you. Either you can have custom ss braided lines made or you can try and follow the oem routing. You need to plan it out all the way to caliper to know what parts you need.
D Money 02-10-2011 11:41 PM

Sorry, it's hard to explain over the forum. Basically I am running 3/16 line with -3an fittings and tube nut/sleeves. I don't want those on the two rear brakes that come through the firewall for the flareing issues.

I call it a conversion fitting, but it's because it goes from m10x1.0 -->-3an which is what I am doing. I didn't go the route of running the SAE lines with fittings on the hardline, then flare. I did it old school hot rod, way.

All I am going to do is run the two rear brakes into that Tee you just showed me, and run the m10x1.0-->-3an to my new stainless front lines I am making. Then I can have all -an through the front brakes.

Thanks for the help!

Ok, these look ridiculously awesome (especially the v-dubs a page ago). The only question is, where would I start on something like this where the car is a DD?

I know I can relocate my washer fluid and my battery to the trunk, but what about stuff like the power steering pump and lines, or the AC stuff? I like the show car look here, but still want to keep all the creature comforts.

That stuff has to stay as is, you can't really move the ac lines and for the power steering you can do something like D did.. I plan on keeping everything just relocating stuff, so hopefully I can give a better example of how to do a "shave" while keeping most if not all of the components.

Small things you can do are:

Relocating:

Washer fluid
Battery
Fuse box
Abs pump (not small actually lol)
Coolant reservoir

And going by Tino you can pretty much hide all the wires from the wiring harness, you just need to unwrap them. There is a lot you can hide under the manifold as well.

I just learned of the advent of the electric PS pump, so that will help. Lol. Is it not possible to re-plumb all of the AC stuff to move it all?
arisking 02-18-2011 01:36 AM

I was thinking the same thing, would be nice to re plumb the AC, maybe the PS too.

If you do ABS/brakes, it should be possible to do the other stuff.

New ABS mount out of the old ABS mount, thanks tino!!!

Material still needs to be removed, but that won't be a problem, everything is just mocked up until then.

I am not a professional by any means, but this will do just fine for my taste.

I am planning on finishing what I can today with how much brake line I have left but I don't think I bought enough. 25' is a few feet too short.

Enjoy!
Teh Police 02-27-2011 02:52 PM

Why dont you run the brakelines in your windshield wiper cowl area? There is plenty of room in there. ALso I dont like how that brake line looks just resting on the transmission like that. If you ever have to take your tranny out and put a new one in that brake line will be a pain in the ass to work around, trust me.
errdizzle 02-27-2011 03:13 PM

isn't the idea to take the brake lines out of the bay

be careful with the wire right there. You don't want that to get snagged.

I was planning on rerouting the abs, but i'm running out of time before my car has to go for the motor/tune install. Jus might see about maybe making a cover or something...or maybe ill just suck it up and get to it all this week

This is all very crazy maybe in the summer I will tear my swap out and redo the bay to look just as beautiful as these ones =) For now I have to make the car drive first
xxscaxx 03-18-2011 12:42 PM

just a little FYI

my 05 sti abs pump is different than both tino's and arisking's. so is the bracket. This bracket can't be mounted the same way.

I am going to have my friend come and weld me up a bracket so i can mount it in the same general area, but figured i'd let everyone know lol.

Does anyone know of local places that sell aftermarket power steering tanks/reservoirs in socal? My intercooler piping is in the way of the lines and stock placement of the oem ps tank. I don't think I can mount the oem one nicely either because of that as well.

Here's progress on the reversed JDM V8 long runners manifold

Drilled and tapped fitting for the FPR

Drilled and tapped the brake booster to oem-like position (I didn't want to use a long hose like some people have. It's a lot cleaner to relocate it)

I plan on repainting or powder coating these parts in the near future. I just need to get back on the road.
xxscaxx 03-20-2011 09:24 PM

anyone care to explain how they extended their alternator wires and where they ran them? I see most who did this deleted the ac and its moved over, mine will still be in the stock location. I'm having a tough time trying to decide what is the best way to route it.

also, how did you run the wiring for the 8g wire coming out of the fuse box for power? I think i am going to run this back up through the fender and into the wiper area, through the firewall and to the back of the starter.

that was kind of what i planned on doing, since my fuse box is basically right where yours sits. was going to go right under and up, either by the timing cover or in the back and bring it through underneath the intake manifold. I can't do this though till i get my motor back in

what about the power wire coming out of the fuse box? where did you run that one? thanks for the help.

Hey all. I am finally getting around to doing this to my Legacy. I already had my Battery relocated to the trunk. I Auto X my car and my ABS has never worked to instead of relocating the Stock ABS pump I got the Master Cylinder from a non ABS Brighton and a WRX Rear Brake Bias Controller and I will be installing that. Ran a bunch of my wiring though my cowl I just need to clean up whats left.

However I did a few things not really posted on here. I redid the Sheet metal at the in front of the strut towers and made a cover plate to cover my wiper motor and some useless sensors. This will also allow me to run wider tires when I start tracking it.

First Cardboard:

And for now just some POR15. When I do my EZ30R swap this winter when I have more time I'll do filler work.

Wow great job mate, no probs glad its coming out well so far.

I agree with others about the tubing from the fartherest side. We actually drilled a hole where the pitch stop mounts and put a rubber grommett through and then fed the line through it, to keep it away from the gearbox. We then fed the lines through the side of the strut tower rather than go underneath the chassis rail..

But peoples recoomendation of going through the wiper cowel is a good one i think. You cant see the line which goes through the pitch stop (as everything covers it) but i do like the idea of the other ones connecting to the resivior..

My lines were done in a rushed manner as the car had to get sent off for engine etc when it was intially done but now i might investigate this a little further..

Here's my brake line setup. I bought some 3/16th brake tubing, a flaring tool, some SS line clamps, and used the stock flare nuts. About 40mins and I was done.

The way I routed my brake lines. The ones off the brake booster turn and go into the firewall (windshield wiper area). The Drive front goes along inner wheel well and along the radiator.

gixx6 is there any issues with having the proportioning valve in that spot? I realize this must sit inside the fender but are the lines in the way of anything? or any rubbing issues to worry about with it there?

for the guys who used SS brake line, what did you use to cut it? i was advised not to use the brake line cutter and to use a hacksaw, but i'm afraid to cut it uneven lol.
D Money 04-01-2011 11:37 AM

Oh brake lines? Here is mine. :)

I already posted my entire list of fittings/parts used but if you need me to again, I will. My best friend from Highschool came by and did my brake lines for me. He knew exactly what I wanted and make everything PERFECT! He also plumbs nitrous kits/brake lines on race cars daily at his shop, so it was easy for him. I ran into a problem with the side port on the master. We couldn't make the bend out of it and still clear the shock tower, so I had to change fittings that's why that line isn't done in pics. I replaced it with a m10x1.0 SAE fitting and 45 degree double flared it.

Anyway, here are some pics. Enjoy!

xxscaxx 04-01-2011 12:12 PM

damn that looks great D!

I plan on running my brake lines from the master cylinder through the grommet for the wiper motor harness. I made a bigger hole on the other side and i'm going to route that part of the harness up in the wiper cowl area, and then run the wires out of pre existing holes for the master and starter (since i'm not deleting any of my holes like you did). I think this is the easiest way for me to get rid of that part of the harness.
AkumaMotorsports 04-01-2011 01:45 PM

Thanks man! Yeah, I wanted individual holes for each line which was surrounded by rubber grommets. I couldn't go through that hole because that's where my wire harness passes through.

The brakes lines will look even more detailed when my buddy kyle puts my last line on, bend it, and have the billet line separator in between the two. :)

[emailprotected]
xxscaxx 04-01-2011 02:09 PM

ah gotcha! Thats a good idea to use the rubber gromments for each line and run them separate. I just didn't want to make more holes than i already have

what did your friend use to cut your ss lines? I ended up buying the stainless lines haha but now I was told not to use a tube cutter...and the one thing i don't have tool wise is a vice so i can't use a hacksaw to cut the lines. i don't know what to do now!
D Money 04-01-2011 02:41 PM

NO! You cannot use a tube cutter as you will NEVER get the lines to flare. You need to use a cut off wheel. Also, make sure your flare tool is setup for 45 degree SAE double flares and CAN FLARE STAINLESS STEEL. I'll guarnatee your tool will not flare, but rather push it to the side. I bought the special flare tool for stainless line for 37 degree flares on the -an fittings, however for the one I needed the 45 degree double flare on the tool wouldn't work. I had to take it to my local fitting store to have him do it, because I wasn't about to pay another $125+ for a flare tool. haha
xxscaxx 04-01-2011 03:12 PM

haha yeah thats what i read, that it won't flare properly. I also don't know if i trust myself using a cutoff wheel, i'm lefty and have a horrible habit of cutting on an angle and i don't have a vise either to hold it. I will check my flare tool when i get home, I forgot about that.

i guess i could always run the line along somthing straight as a guide so i don't get an uneven cut.
D Money 04-01-2011 03:41 PM

haha just call me if you have any questions brotha.
Gixx6 04-02-2011 01:00 AM

It's close for tire clearance where I have my lines routed. But if my tires does hit anything it will be the metal inner fender well before the brake lines. I have yet to make the new inner fender liners which will cover the brake lines to offer more protection.

I didn't pay as much attention to detail as my lines will all be covered and never seen.

Of course the way I did mine are on the cheap end of the scale and not way crazy nice D Money did.

I like the way you mounted the proportioning valve. I took down my glove box to see if I could get to the rear brake lines but didn't see them, there's a lot of crap in the way lol. I like how you brought them out through the rubber grommet. I think I will just leave it up in the wiper area, I turned the lines up and put them through the grommet right above the line. I was thinking of doing what arisking did too but I can't make up my damn mind

D, I have a hydraulic flare tool, it made that ss line it's bitch when I flared it today  I used a hacksaw then sanded it so it was straight and deburred with a 1/8 drill bit. It came out perfect.
