Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 39

under0athh51189 12-08-2013 01:24 PM
Truth be told the bay was shaved by the body shop while I was in Afghanistan and it was somewhat of a miscommunication by the time I got back it was just a little to late to change it
Damn that sucks dude. Still looks awesome
Serkan 12-08-2013 01:24 PM

Lol we have a saying in Turkish for very clean looking things but may not make too much sense when translated.

"Pour some honey than lick it off"

In my quest to lighten my car, I feel like I've ended up with a pretty empty engine bay. No where near the level of you guys, especially since most of you had turbo stuff and more electronics to hide.....but look at all this room for activities!:

Not bad now time to lose the battery and fuse box
RavensFan7 12-11-2013 04:33 PM

I'd like to move the fuse box somewhere, as water gets in during heavy rain....but I think I'm gonna keep the battery in the engine bay. Trunk isn't an option, and I don't like that much amperage just "chillin" under a seat.

I'm considering sacrificing the glovebox but fitment would be tight. At this point I'm set on a Shorai lithium battery in the stock location. With those two things gone the engine bay would be pretty empty though...

really clean bays in here. I like :)
thehollowrift 12-19-2013 10:16 AM

Hey guys --- I love this thread, first time I've been here (to post, vs lurk) post on clean bays:

3) Where are you running the wiring for fuse box relocations/battery relocation? 4) Are you doing custom jobs or are there kits out there that are decent for this? I've spotted the kits on summit w/ battery boxes.... but they don't look so cleanly installed in the trunk.

I've noticed several Strut bars - 5) does anyone know of 'replacement decals' ? I've got an older CF STi Strut bar but the damn decal got messed up - little thing that is irritating the hell out of me.

Aside from a DIY job.... Ballparking (without the nice add ons like the IAG radiator bits, or AN lines etc...... 6) A reasonable budget for materials would be in the range of...what $X - $X? Going full shaved/tucked ---- $2500?
05subysti 12-19-2013 10:38 AM

Pm d money he is the guru of shaved/tucked bays. He can give you an approximate value and exactly what parts you need.

It's all diy stuff for fusebox and battery. The battery just order some 0g wiring online, a distribution box and buy whatever battery box u want. Mine ran around $50 for everything. For the fuse box it's just extending and putting it where u want. And the price varies man. Im in mine probably about that with doing everything myself. If u want good kits for abs delete and PS check out ChaseBays. That's what im running for everything
Recoil 12-23-2013 11:45 AM

Started on my quest to clean up my engine bay yesterday. Got the AC all deleted. I'm going for a minor tuck/shave.

Also shaved the mold lines off my spare intake manifold in preparation for powder coat.

Lots of work ahead.

When drilling out the battery mounting tray, what products are you guys using to fill and sand down all the excess?
05subysti 12-23-2013 05:34 PM

So anyone relocate the fuse box under the fender and relocate the battery to trunk.

What did y'all do wiring wise to the battery, longer cable, 0g recommended? And how'd you get it hooked back up working.
Jackie leggs 12-23-2013 05:55 PM

Recoil, another thing you should do is shave the inlet mount and various others such as the grounds and those that hold the crank case breather brackets. I recently did that to mine and it looks much nicer once coated.

It's a little hard to see on the pass side due to the hoses and junk but you get the idea. Just got the motor back in the car and haven't had the chance to move stuff around after getting it running.

That looks really clean. Where did you move your grounds to? I have composite TGVs so I have to run more grounds than usual due to loss of conductivity.

I honestly found a little bit of rust under my battery tray - I ended up cutting out all the metal and just replacing it with sheet metal I bought from Lowes. After putting that in, I have seen people use bondo or fiberglass followed by putty to make everything nice and smooth before paint. I used bondo to smooth things out and I think it's about 80% good.. plan to do fiberglass and putty in the future.

I went a little overboard... I used the Jegs setup from Summit Racing and added a distribution box in the engine bay and in-line breaker near the battery. The Jegs setup comes with 0 gauge wire.

Thanks. I spent some time last night and deleted the rest of the brackets on my driver's side strut tower and removed the fuse box from the main harness.

I think the next big I'm going to do is flip the ABS upside down and mount it underneath where it goes in stock location. I'll run the hardlines along the inside of the fender and into the wiper cowl.
Smurftastic 01-02-2014 12:35 AM

That is my next step too :) I tried to use a custom ABS pump cover and it just doesn't look as good as the inverted setup.

Great, glad I'm not out of my mind on the idea, my concern is whether or not I can bleed it while it's oriented other than the OEM positioning. One way to find out I guess..

*sigh*....yea. I hacked up my PS lines, and filled the rack with wheel bearing grease lol....no way I could ever use it for PS again.

Anything can be put back in if you really need to...but I think most of the stuff would take longer to put back in, than it took to remove.

Yeah, I know I am. I removed the ABS from the harness in preparation to extend it out.

I also mocked up some tubs with card stock yesterday. I'm thinking something along the lines of this:

And I deleted out the cruise control, and started to move the portion of the harness that runs along the firewall above the hard lines.

This car is a daily with child seats and all. I don't want to move the battery because NHRA rules require an external cutoff switch and I drag this car.

I deleted the ABS, routed the lines through the firewall, and moved the fuse box. Never really intended to do a real shave or tuck, but it has cleaned up a lot.

You can delete it, but I wouldn't if you have a water cooled turbo. It's a lot harder to get all of the air out of the system without it.

So how are you guys disassembling your alternators to have them painted/powder coated? I tried taking mine apart, I got the pulley off the front but couldn't get the four Phillips head bolts off the back without detroying the heads. The alternator itself is about 20 years (one that came with the car). Would I have better luck buying a brand new one and trying to disassemble?
