Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 20

Quadsbc 09-07-2011 10:53 AM

I dont think I'll delete the abs yet.

^^ same as me, i'm not confident enough to do the brake lines.

xxscaxx 09-07-2011 01:12 PM

its not as bad as you think. bending them and trying to loop it through crap is the most tedious. as long as you have a good flare kit, you will be fine!
arisking 09-07-2011 01:23 PM

You know it, doing brakes was pretty easy.
Quadsbc 09-07-2011 03:02 PM

I got a double flare tool. I'd like to drive my car soon
573 09-07-2011 03:37 PM

Is there a preferred brand of flare tool out there? I have done some research, but it doesn't seem like there's much of a consensus.
Rice Devil 09-07-2011 04:05 PM

well I might even get the pipes made for me if its easy to do.

Any pics on your mounting of the ABS units?

You guys should post pics of where your deleting stuff to! ie. how your hooking things up behind the fender, in the wheel well, etc. Great job though!

I got mine from inlinetube.com

http://inlinetube.com/Street%20Rod/TLF01.htm

Mine was 37 degree single flare since I did -an connections and stainless hardline. If you want double flare SAE get this one.

http://inlinetube.com/Street%20Rod/TLF02.htm

Just make sure you get the right one for the flares you're doing. Also it should be able to work on stainless line.
It's gone I got a mbc
you really went rhd? :(
Quadsbc 09-09-2011 08:55 AM

Shh, I'm working on it.

your doing a rhd conversion but don't want to take the time to reroute the abs?

I realize you want to drive the car, but if you work at the lines you could have it done in two days working at a normal pace.

Doing a quality job takes time, and skill. Some people dont get bending lines and all that goes into plumbing with hardlines. Not to mention tooling up for the job, bender, flare tools, ect. Having redone an entire car with 100% new brake plumbing I can tell you its one of those areas you have to embrace and jump into. Now we have seen a few on this site that look like crap hand bent lines, self tapper screws etc. If OP wants to do that route sure go for it.
xxscaxx 09-09-2011 12:33 PM

D money used self tapping screws, and his look far from crap?

And I never said it wouldn't take time, skill, etc. his whole car is practically gutted right now...I was just giving him a hard time.

The point of rerouting them (in this thread at least) is to HIDE them. I'm all for a professional job, but as long as my lines are safe and out of harms way of anything, whats the difference between a hand bent (or tool bender) and professional bent line?

Only saying this because my lines for example are routed up top where the wiper motor is. No one will ever see them. The only lines you see are the ones coming off the abs pump and the driver side line, which have all been covered and wrapped.

the flaring is the hardest part, and thats when your investment into a good flaring kit comes into play.
Quadsbc 09-09-2011 01:02 PM

Yeah, I should re route but I got all the jdm lines I can just swap in.
fallehero_08 09-09-2011 01:13 PM

naw... re route it. it will look so much cleaner.
Quadsbc 09-09-2011 01:17 PM

Maybe. I got the tool already. Haven't real looked into it much. What would I need, distribution block...?

Is anybody on here using an electric power steering pump? Any good or bad experiences with them?

Apparently the MR2 came with one, and now they can be easily found for around $150. I'm thinking about throwing this on the to-do list since it'd clean up the bay some and I'd get to move a decent amount of weight to a place that is lower and further back.

I'm looking into it but my concern is if it can handle the pressure needed to turn 265's.

I have some info about this from my research on my home computer. I'll post it up when I get home. Its not as easy as you may think, but its not horrible. If I remember correctly, there is one from a Volvo that works better.

I'm curious to see this too. Upon further reading, I saw somewhere that the MR2 pump peaks at 1000psi. I wasn't able to find the operating pressure of the OEM Subaru pump, but my impression is that it was around 2000psi. I'm not confident in these numbers, but I would be willing to bet that a WRX weights more in the front than an MR2, and may require more pressure in the system as a result.

Keeping AC? Did you bond all the new panels in? In general it looks pretty darn good, you just never know for sure until you put some color on it. The hard edges up on top of the aprons could be radiused some to make that blend in. Also all this work you should continue up to the strut tops and smooth that area also. Just my thoughts.

I welded the panels in, there were 6 in total. One on each side, one on the entire top of the from rail and one one the side of each frame rail. then in between the welds I used 3M panel bond. Custom hidden AC lines have been made. The hard edge is straight as possible. I checked it a million times with a straight edge. The strut tops still need some work, and now the car has a floor mounted pedal box so both the clutch and brake master cylinder spaces have to be filled.

No, I used the panel bond for a builder and then used U-Pol Flyweight gold, and Dolphin Glaze for smoothing. The panel bond is not easy at all to smooth. It hardens like steel so be ready to use a air tools (DA or die grinder) and a lot of elbow grease:lol: It does however hold very well, it is made to actually bond panels to a vehicle. It also requires a special applicator gun that is around 250.00 so if you have someone that works in a body shop that will loan you one that will make things more affordable. Here are a few links to the materials that I used. Also, I am going back the original Aspen white.

I'm just color matching mine. Minor tuck and a little reroute of a few lines. No shock an awe on my part, just function trumps form LS style.
Cor 250 09-21-2011 09:08 PM

Is it feasible to tuck the bay of a daily driver? I understand shaving won't be possible but would a non mechanic/enthusiast be able to tuck and clean the bay and still be able to drive the next day or even that night? If so what simple things could be tucked/cleaned up?

I'm obviously a noob at this
