F1, the 2007 Edition part 2

artkevin 11-29-2006 12:31 PM

Agreed John. I think they will be the sleepers of 07.
NYE25... I hope they do but unless Newey can pull a miracle out of his but I think they will struggle to stay at the sharp end of the field.

So is Kimi gonna always be lazy or are we gonna see him test anytime soon?

hes still under contract at McLaren until the end of the year, so he cannt drive the Ferrari until January. Same reason Alonso isnt in the McLaren.

StuBeck 11-29-2006 01:30 PM

Red Bull/Jaguar has been 7th since 03, I think they'll get 6th this year, but I don't think they'll win the constructors, they only got a gift podium this year.

I like Kliens new helmet too, I do like the way matte helmets look too.

I think slicks should come back since it will be back to one tyre supplier, and they didn't really work as well as they thought they would for reducing cornering speeds.

This is probably way off, but I think if Hamilton does really poorly we might see Hakkinen come in to take over his place. Dennis' comments about bringing hamilton in weren't as secure as I was hoping, leaving the window open for him getting dropped if he's too slow. Looking at the times though today, I doubt this will be a problem.
MattDell 11-29-2006 01:34 PM
Rossiter has been a Honda test driver for awhile now.

My guess is he's playing benchmark for Mr. Klein.
Looks like Rossiter is the official test driver, and Klein is a reserve driver. I didn't even know they did that. :o

I think the whole Hakkenin thing is just the team giving one of their great drivers the chance to try out some new hardware. He has been one of the most successful driver's at McLaren in the past couple decades (Yes I remember Senna) and still races for Mercedes in DTM.
KAX 11-29-2006 05:28 PM

he doesnt do too well in DTM either. I think they just want more feedback from an experienced driver on their chassis so they can make it better.

True, I was looking at a wierd situation to begin with, but I guess its even more out there, especially if he isn't doing well in DTM.

Ferg, that picture of the all black Honda car is exactly what I was wanting to see. Although it's not quite the same (since they were red), I also remember the ad-less Ferrari's with the black memorial nosecone that ran in the race after 9/11 - very classy move, and the cars just look like pure, refined speed without all the logos on them.

parker/slc/gc8fan 11-29-2006 09:44 PM

I totally agree on how much better they look pat, I couldnt have described it better myself.

ZenHooloovoo.

From watching 06's Suzuka, you are indeed correct about Fuji making a return to the JP GP.

At least the commentators confirmed it, and I'd say they're just as good as ecclestump himself.
StuBeck 11-29-2006 10:26 PM

Yes, it was confirmed mid season that Fuji was going to be the Japanese GP this year, although Toyota is thinking about giving it to Suzuka for 08 because of the bad PR of "stealing" the GP.
KAX 11-29-2006 11:29 PM

the FIA wants to make them switch off, something theyd also like to do in germany and italy. Doesnt Fuji have the contract until 2010, though?
nKoan 11-30-2006 12:40 AM

I don't believe Italy is trading off. I thought San Marino just straight up lost their GP.

For the time being, only Hockenheimring and Nurburgring are scheduled to trade off. There was rumor of Silverstone and Magny Cours trading off, but Silverstone said no.
parker/slc/gc8fan 11-30-2006 12:52 AM

as for now, they just lost it. But the FIA is trying to make it where the trade-off every couple of years or so. In the future, they want it so that every season is a different schedule; makes it a little more interesting, i guess.
artkevin 11-30-2006 11:08 AM

Personally I hope they don't trade off. I've never felt anything for Imola and would hate not to see Monza.
Ferg 11-30-2006 12:01 PM

Barcelona, Day Three.

Mika...still quicker than Michael Andretti!
Ferrari again quickest at Barcelona

Thursday, November 30th 2006, 16:20 GMT

The Ferrari team continued to set the pace at the Barcelona circuit, where the Italian squad finished on top of the times for the third day running.

While Brazilian Felipe Massa had headed the times on the first two days, it was test driver Luca Badoer who went fastest today, showing Ferrari still seem to be ahead of their rivals when coping with the new Bridgestone tyres.

Massa was today replaced by Spaniard Marc Gene, sixth quickest in the second Italian car.

Renault's Heikki Kovalainen raised his pace after two discreet days and finished as second quickest in the R26 after completing 117 laps of the Spanish track. The Finn was the busiest man and finished less than three tenths of a second behind Badoer.

BMW-Sauber again showed strong pace, with Robert Kubica posting the third fastest time.

He was joined by German driver Timo Glock, who finally got his test with BMW after postponing it due to a hand injury earlier this year. The GP2 driver finished as ninth fastest.

Lewis Hamilton continued making progress towards to top of the times, the Briton finishing as fourth quickest in the first of the McLarens.

The main attention, however, was focused on the second Mercedes-powered car, driven today by two-time champion Mika Hakkinen.

The Finn, returning to a Grand Prix car for a serious test for the first time since the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix, managed 77 laps but finished at the bottom of the times, three seconds off Badoer's pace.

There were two red flags during the day, the first caused by Williams' Narain Karthikeyan and the final one by Glock near the end of the session.

More to follow.

Didn't they just get finished with rebuilding the chicane?
StuBeck 11-30-2006 01:34 PM

That was Spa. Its crap, I saw a FIA GT race yesterday and they moved it way to the right, it was better before.

Imola and Monza won't trade off. They are trading the German GP because neither can afford to hold the GP themselves, both have basically gone bankrupt this year.

I guess this test means its unlikely Hakkinen will take over. I was expecting him to be a bit faster.
Ferg 11-30-2006 02:22 PM

Three seconds off the Ferrari after five years out fo the car isn't exactly slow Stu :p
TimStevens 11-30-2006 02:55 PM

Actually, I'd say it is very slow. But, it really depends on how many laps he got.

:edit: just saw he got 77. Yeah, I like Mike a lot, but that's pretty slow.
Ferg 11-30-2006 03:19 PM

You guys are just ruthless

He hasn't been behind the wheel of an F1 car for five years, cut him just a little slack.

Besides, we'll never know how close Mika really got to his maximum attack.
TimStevens 11-30-2006 03:25 PM

It's not like he's been sitting on his ass playing Gran Turismo Ferg :p He was hauling ass in DTM for those five years, and was over two seconds slower than Hamilton, who has minimal F1 experience.

I'm willing to believe that he was doing tire tests and full fuel runs or something like that, but if he doesn't pick it up in the next few tests...I dunno...he may have lost it.
Ferg 11-30-2006 03:32 PM

He may have, but to come back and still be relatively on the pace is pretty impressive. It's really hard to tell after only one day in the car.

He's only done two seasons in the DTM (1 win, 1 pole, 6 podiums, 5 fastest laps) and I think a one off for Mitsubishi in a Finnish national rally...anyone remember when that was?
Ferg 11-30-2006 03:39 PM

Ah, found it.
Hakkinen's Rally Debut

04th February 2003

In his debut rally, the gruelling Arctic Rally in Lapland, former F1 World Champion Mika Hakkinen finished a creditable 30th overall and 12th in class. Piloting a Mitsubishi Lancer WRC car, Hakkinen had to battle temperatures of -35C to finish the rally - an achievement in itself. He called it a 'personal victory'.
I never said he was slow! I was just expecting him to be a bit faster, maybe a second and a half off of Hamilton instead of two.
StuBeck 11-30-2006 06:18 PM

On a somewhat unrelated note, a replica Hakkinen helmet sold on ebay for about 320 shipped a few days ago. I was watching it ideally interested, I was amazed it went for so cheap, the same guy is selling Senna and Barrichelo helmets for 500-600 (or trying to.)
Massa not afraid of Raikkonen

By Michele Lostia Sunday, December 3rd 2006, 11:31 GMT

Brazilian Felipe Massa says he is not afraid of having Kimi Raikkonen as his teammate at the Ferrari team next season.

Raikkonen is leaving McLaren to replace Michael Schumacher at the Italian squad following the German seven-time champion's retirement.

The Finn is considered to be one of the main favourites for next year's championship following Ferrari's strong end to the 2006 season.

The team continued showing impressive form when they dominated this week's first test of the off-season at the Barcelona circuit, where Massa was quickest on the opening two days.

Raikkonen will not be allowed to test with Ferrari until next year.

"It would have been better for Kimi to be here testing, but he's good enough to learn quickly," Massa told Gazzetta dello Sport. "He's strong, but I feel in a fine situation myself, ready to do the maximum: for sure I'm not afraid of him.

"To know the people you work with is an advantage, but if you come over and manage to feel well and the car has no problems you can immediately have a good season.

"Twelve months ago I had only a one-year contract, everyone was sure my presence would have ended quickly. On the contrary, I'm still here, I have a contract, I've won some races, and I'm more relaxed. And ready for the challenge."

During 2006, Massa scored two wins, including one at his season-ending home race in Brazil, on his way to third place in the standings behind Schumacher.

The Brazilian said he learned a lot from the German driver.

"When you find yourself racing with someone like Michael, and sometimes you manage to stay in front, you can't avoid learning. He represented a very good teacher for me, it'll help me in the future," he added.
