Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 29

stue.r 11-19-2012 06:05 PM

Anyone know If theres a write up on D Money's car please?
Smurftastic 11-19-2012 07:47 PM

No write-ups - just lots of posts in here and some other engine bay thread. As painful as it sounds, best bet is just to read through everything, learn by doing, and asking for help when you need it.

I've been reading through this thread for the past couple nights as well as staring and staring at pictures. This is the first time I'm doing anything like this but its really not that bad. Just have to think about it and have patients with it. Only thing holding me up is my ABS but I think I'm leaving that for now. Most people are really helpful too.

I swear half the difficulty is just taking the time to figure it out... and then taking the time to get it done - so time consuming!

Amen... hours of standing there just looking at the engine bay
Smurftastic 11-19-2012 09:41 PM

So far, outside of researching on here, I have about 15 hours in the the tuck/shave job. So raw right now, many many hours left to get it right.

Yes!! ha. I go out and stare at the car, then I come here and stare at pictures and read, then I do it all over again, then I take a picture of my car and stare at it while I compare it to stuff on here. It's never ending! Yupp I figure I have about 10 solid hours just pulling junk off the car, moving stuff around, and whatnot. I'm not even shaving anything at the moment.

That's a shame, I was wondering what engine hardware he was using, pistons, injectors , turbo, ect ect.

Here's a really bad photo that I took in the pitch dark.. but it gives you a bit of an idea of the new setup. Lots of polishing to do in the spring :)

I'm trying to get a couple of more photos, but the car has been put away for the winter.

Got my manifold back today. Here's a little mock it up. I think I'm gonna flip the fuel rails so the lines run out front cause they do not for very nice by the turbo. And don't mind the Gatorade bottle, it was catching power steering fluid but I have a steel braided line for the PS pump now. Also the td04 is coming out and a VF30 going in.

Looking good! What kind of reservoir caps are those? Project Mu? Is there any other company that makes caps, blue wouldn't flow with my car and I can't find any other ones.

Yeah those are Project Mu caps.. D'Money hooked me up :)
sfk1412 11-21-2012 05:05 PM

Believe it or not these 8mm spacers are giving me a ton of room to hide wires under the manifold. Serve a damn good purpose too.

It is a PITA but it's rewarding. Recently when I go to regional car meets with other people doing the same thing, we spend more time comparing tradecraft and ideas than looking at the rest of the meet.

I was working on cleaning up the bay in my 07 wrx wagon...until I hit a deer, totaling both the car and the deer. Now I'm fiddling with my Miata a bit.

The holes in the firewall are for braces, much like the ones that are already there. The tunnel is widened to clear an ls1 & t56.

With regard to shaving bays, I guess the only unique thing here is the relocation of the wiper motor.

Did you have any issues getting the tmic to fit right with those 8mm spacers? When I bought mine, I grabbed the 3mm ones because I had read that the 8mm wouldn't allow the tmic to line up right.

That's just a mock up. But I did throw the intercooler brackets on and snuggly bolted it all down to make sure everything was gonna fit. Plus I was anxious to see what it was gonna look like :D. Everything fit fine though and the hood closed perfect with out issues. I was going to get the 3mm ones too then I emailed Grimmspeed and asked them and they said that there wouldn't be a problem so I took my chances.

Hey guys. Engine shaving newbie here just looking for some tips from those more experienced than i am (read everyone). I've got an old STI and the engine bay is in need of a little brightening up. Right now it just looks like a crowded mess of crap and i just don't know where to start.

I know shaving is quite an undertaking, but I've got to start somewhere and it would be great to know a little before i get going on a project that could take me a very long time.
I've tried my best to start small and break it down to manageable bits so please tell me what you think of my plan. Tips and criticisms are welcome

Remove/clean/paint intake manifold and alternator

Remove turbo chimney and replace with heat shield

Remove/relocate boost control solenoid
-I plan on mounting my new MBC in the same place as the old BCS but I hear the old BCS needs to be reatined to avoid throwing a CEL. Is this true and if so, where can I put it so I no longer see it

Clean/paint rad mounts
-I'm not sure how these come off. It appears to be bolts on the chassis side, but pins or something on the rad side. How do i take these off

Relocate throttle cable
-Can i melt the cable insulation if it ends up touching either the block or the intake manifold or is there a safer way to route it

Tuck in as many hoses as i can
-What kind of hose can i use if i just want to make my own new lines to make it easier to tuck them away so i don't see them anymore

Here's a shot of my bay to give you a general idea of what im dealing with

Remove and repaint everything with rust or salt scum on it. Everything. Powder coating is cheap and looks great. Black or silver is clean and blends well. Bright colors on an otherwise dirty or old bay is janky. Trust me on this.

Also, hit up McMaster Carr or a similar vendor and order huge bags of stainless bolts in M6 and M8 sizes with washers and in various lengths. They are WAY cheaper than you'd think. For 50 to 100 bucks you can replace every single bolt that's visible in the bay. It makes a huge difference. Takes a bit of planning, but it's cheaper and less ricey than those dress up kits they sell. I've done my hood bolts, fender bolts and everything else in there. Looks great.

+1 the green looks great.

and yeah, there's a couple issues with the chase bays delete. just get a wilwood brake proportioning valve, and run the lines yourself. it's pretty simple.

Thats what I was shooting for too. But seeing that my car is going to see winter driving I decided to hold off on the relocation and I just stuck it back in the bay. I couldn't find a way to mount it under my headlight and feel 100% that it was going to stay dry. Better safe then sorry :D Cool idea though! looking forward to see it done,
under0athh51189 12-18-2012 11:03 PM

Thanks guys. The fuku couplers are awesome. I've got the couplers, rad hoses and inlet and all are very well made and all fit perfect. The quality is top notch. They are double the thickness of eBay ones and are all really stiff. The inlet should hold high power with no collapsing like eBay ones. They currently sell the green, blue and black and are all snake skin looking. Also they will be dropping white and purple soon as well. Highly recommend them.

Here is my contribution. There are a lot of wires and hoses that can be relocated, but this will do for now. Eventually Ill do a full tuck and get rid abs, and get rid of power steering. The cold air intake is also only there to run the stock ECU for inspection. When the stand alone is in its a shorty pipe w/ 4 inch diameter.

Oh did I mention its a 2.61l, sleeve, stroked, cammed, and ported motor ;). Was an 05 wrx now its a hybrid with sti drivetrain swap.

Would have to say not from what is seen in here, many in process with large variance to the level they are done. I just dont see many going after the full show car level but something in between.
Slvr2k 12-25-2012 06:10 PM

Iceman967 out can relocate that fusebox pretty easily in the fender to clear that whole section , car looks badass
slamdspec 12-26-2012 08:06 PM

Does anyone have a rough guess on how far you can move the fusebox before the wiring needs to be extended? Im planning to tub my inner fenders and need to move the box as far as possible.
under0athh51189 12-26-2012 08:14 PM

I moved my fusebox all the way to right under the headlight without exstending anything. And d money mines on the way to full shave. Im full tucked, working on a rotated kit and abs delete then the motor is comin out for welding off of all the holes and then repaint of bay.

Quick question whay do u guys use to smooth the bay do u use bondo or glass.
slamdspec 12-26-2012 08:26 PM

Awesome. Thats where I was hoping to move mine. Thanks.
Grayguy 12-26-2012 10:02 PM

Hmm, I think I'll have to see about moving mine down by the headlight. That seems like a good solution to having it still be accessable.

Slvr2k Thanks! A lot of blood sweat and beers went into this car so far. Only reason I don't want to move it into the fender is moisture. This car will most likely be my daily for a little while too. My goal one day is to put it into my glove box and really tuck all the wires through the trans tunnel and come in in 1 harness to the center of the block. but that wont happen for a while. Need to get my build 100% done before I move to the next thing.

Has anyone built a custom bracket for the power steering pump to sit in? Mine broke where the adjuster is and instead of getting a new brittle one from Subie, I want to custom make one out of steel. In the process of rerouting my tensioner more towards the center and lower so the crank will stop slipping.
