Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 35

erok81 08-12-2013 01:06 AM
I can make the lines and understand the routing but I'm curious who changed the mc1 to fronts and mc2 to rears, versus those who kept the diagonal layout. I also need to know what proportioning valve setups people have and pick the right configuration for my build.
I ran one port to the rear and one to the front with tee's on both lines. Then an adjustable proportioning valves from jegs to the rear lines.

I don't see why people do the x set ups. Because to me you'd need two prop valves. Seems like a lot of extra lines for not a whole lot of difference.

Anyone shave their pitch stop mount off, what is the process?
under0athh51189 08-12-2013 10:38 AM
Has anybody tried the chase bays "in interior" brake line setup with the OEM master cylinder? It looks promising for my build but wanted to see if anyone had experience with the kit before I drop 400+ dollars.

I have the whole Kit plus master from them. Everything looks great haven't installed yet but from what I understand they fixed the issues

I think you're going to need solid motor and trans mounts if you attempt this. Without the pitch-stop mount and with standard flexible motor mounts, the motor/trans assembly moves a great deal.

Other than that, I would assume you could simply drill out the spot welds on the thing and remove it?
Anyone shave their pitch stop mount off, what is the process?
I have it done on mine, it is a pain in the ass drilling out all the little spot welds and then filling them back in. After that is completed if you want an absolutely smooth look you have to blend it with all-metal. Be forewarned, this is not for the faint of heart!

You will need:

Drill and bits
Small pry bar
hammer
usc all-metal (if you want the area smooth as possible)
3m panel bond (for spot weld holes)
cut off wheel (thinnest disc you can find)
grinder
welder
*edit* also forgot to add that you will need to cut the metal "honey combs" once you take off the mount. After that you will need to smack them flat but be careful that you do not change the roundness. You will then need to weld the seams where you cut. *see my pictures in my build thread, link is below*

You are absolutely correct. I boxed in my motor mounts and welded them together, same thing with my transmission mount. No way in hell I was going to spend over $500 in mounts!

Keep an eye out here, I will have updated pictures as I begin working on my car again next week. I will try and update pictures at least once every couple days if time permits.
*edit* Just updated my thread a bit so that you could at least see what I meant.

Removing the pitch stop would look clean, but I don't think I could ever stomach solid mounts!

EDIT: Really nice build you have started there. Subscribed. I don't have the time or drive to shave, but I certainly enjoy watch you guys do it. :D

Yeah, all the girls are going to have fun if you know what I mean ;-)

Thanks man, it has been a hell of a ride so far; I will never build a car this way again I can tell you that. I need a bigger garage and a lift, so damn tired of laying on the ground and bending over all day.
arisking 08-13-2013 05:23 PM

Redoing my wire extension fail. The glove box was a bad idea...steering column fuse box tuck is way better.

Oh lord. That looks fun. ;)

Why not just toss all of that inside the fender and call it a day. It's not like that thing needs to be accessed very often.
Big-Sexy907 08-14-2013 12:14 AM

Quick question for the group, how did you shave the body seams on the right and left sides of the engine bay? I'm speaking about the areas right in front of the strut towers, and the large seam across the firewall at the upper 3rd right below the cowl?

I was considering welding the areas together then smoothing the weld and filling with Evercoat Metal Glaze, however I would like the area to look a little more uniform. I would like to avoid adding a piece of sheet metal, but I'm still open to the option if its the easiest route.
ScoobyJD 08-14-2013 08:42 AM

All-metal is your best friend for the washer tray after you grind the metal back some to get rid of the edge. As far as in front of the struts, you would need to post pictures or be way more descriptive than that.

I'm looking at how to do this the easiest also... I plan on cutting out most of the firewall and then putting a flat piece to replace it but I'm not 100% on how the execute this at that seam. I'd like to go all the way to the cowl with one piece but my concern is how do u seal the cowl up so water doesn't come pouring in in those rainy days... And yes I will drive this car year round, also this is race car build with looks so since this car will be drive really hard, I think I should keep my pitch mount.. so I could use as much info as possible also... Thanks
arisking 08-15-2013 12:00 AM

Yeah I know it won't be used ever. But I want to do something different.

In the 3 years I've owned the car I've only ever blown a fuel pump fuse.

Either way, I would rather have everything be dry and safe. Ha.

ScoobyJD 08-17-2013 10:31 PM

reyrey, you need to make a build thread in member gallery so that we can follow your build! We need more shave and tucked engine bay builds on here!
reyrey 08-18-2013 09:40 AM

Haha it is a pain in the ass but my build isnt a major tuck i just shaved a few things hid a few wires here and there its not as easy as it looks lol
erok81 08-18-2013 07:56 PM

So back to those damn brown/gray engine harness connectors. I've hidden my brake lines in the cowl, fuse box in the fender, etc etc. I have no idea what to do with these connectors. I could extend them, but it'll take a shiz load of wires to get that all color coded right. I thought about finding someone parting out a car and buy pieces of the harness to make a couple extension adapters. But that's all I can think of. The stuff on the passenger side will be easy. I'm just at a loss for the driver side.
3mlwhly 08-18-2013 08:25 PM

I'm planning on making a box or something right above the trans tunnel and extending all the wires so I can hid all the engine and trans wire connections in that... I have exactly diecided how to execute this yet though

When you guys welded up the lower firewall did you remove the dash? Most of it I can get without having to do it, but the insulation has me concerned. I don't want to catch fire lol

I removed my dash, harness and insulation just to be safe. As my buddy boostdprotege said make sure you have someone on the inside panel bond catches fire quick once heated!

I ended up extending all the wires and routing tye harness around and under the front of the headlight area. Probably not the best solution... but it worked.

Back in the car, and out through the firewall under the brake booster. What I did. No extending necessary.

If you do this what do you end up extending? I don't care about the alternator stuff or any of the easy things. I just want to stay away from anything engine harness related extending.
Im going on 3.5 months now waiting for my wiring harness (was quoted 3 weeks). I call them 3 times a day as the car is useless now. Worst company I have ever dealt with. They made me send them the entire harness out of the car, fuse boxes and all. Almost 60lbs of wiring. Like an idiot I paid in full before I sent anything out. We have missed 4 race events already this season.

I am about to fly down there to handle it and get my stuff back. I don't think I have a choice, I have been getting lied to almost daily for months now. Otherwise the car is totaled.

This is how the car has been for the past 3.5 months now

Chase (chasebays) is local to me, hes moved shops 3 times in the last couple of yrs that i know of... Every time I've bought stuff from him, been cash on pickup... harnesses, made within a couple of days. But i did have wiring issues on a ls1 harness. Had to repin alot of the connectors.
arisking 08-24-2013 07:17 PM

Putting my fuse box in the steering column area only light wires needed to be extended, besides alternator stuff. No engine harness stuff.

Extended wires, 04 STi.

Nice. Thanks for posting that. Extending some headlight wires (especially that many) is nothing. The way I have it now I was going to have to extend the alternator stuff anyway.

Looks like the fender is coming back off. :)
arisking 08-25-2013 04:47 PM

Yup, it's easy.

I de-pinned the fuse box wires, one at a time, and fed them through to the inside of the car. Then after feeding them you can decide which ones need extending.

Process of elimination of sorts.

You wouldnt happen to know what wire colors etc? I have a 04 Sti and this would help me out a ton with bringing the fuse box into the interior.

*double post*

I don't know what each wire does if that's what you're asking.

Take off the fender. Remove grommet from wall that goes into car. Undo the connections from the fuse box. Then de-pin each wire and feed it through grommet one at a time. Plug in each wire you've de-pinned right after you moved it through the grommet.

Eventually you'll have transfered the connector piece through the grommet without tearing the grommet open to get the connectors through. Time consuming! But it works.

Best I can explain it without having pics.

This is going to go much better than the way I had it before. Fuse box inside. Engine harness I'll hack a hole in the firewall. Also figured I'll run my headlight harness on the other side in the bumper so that's hidden too. And the washer bottle fits perfectly inside the bumper. No more running wires for that thing. :)

No, basically I was asking if you could post which wires you extended. For example:

Purple w/ white stripe
Red w/ Yellow Stripe
Green w/ Blue Stripe
