That's weird, I thought they were using the RA106 (or whatver it was called, last years Honda) but I'm guessing they are going for a few new changes anyways.
| Fox | 01-22-2007 04:50 PM |
I believe the FIA has new crash-test requirements for this year, which understandably, a 2006 monocoque might not pass. Ferrari's press release for the F2007 even mentioned their new car weighed an additional 10 kg because of the increased strength needs around the cockpit.
| KAX | 01-22-2007 06:40 PM |
perhaps FIAs way to ban reusing a chassis, without actually banning the use of an old chassis?
| StuBeck | 01-22-2007 07:04 PM |
Nah, they've used old chassis before, like last years SA and the STR 01. That is what makes it so funny, everyone is pissy this year, but last year the two teams using customer chassis this year did the EXACT SAME THING! I think they realized this since the stupidness seems to have gone away.
Raikkonen makes Ferrari debut
Tuesday, January 23rd 2007, 10:48 GMT
Kimi Raikkonen finally made his debut at the wheel of a Ferrari Formula One car this morning, when he took to the Vallelunga circuit.
The Finn had yet to do any laps for his new team since leaving Mercedes-powered McLaren at the end of last year to replace Ferrari's retired seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
This morning, however, Raikkonen finally drove one of the Italian cars, on the first of a three-day test at the circuit near Rome.
Raikkonen took to the track in last year's 248 F1 ahead of his debut with the new F2007, completing his first acclimatisation laps.
Ferrari were forced to abandon plans to test at Mugello, much closer to their Maranello factory, because of predicted bad weather.
The weather at Vallelunga was not perfect, however, and Raikkonen drove on a damp track.
His helmet design looks much diluted at Ferrari, the top design is about 40% the size it was at McLaren. :(

Yep, it reminds me of exactly what happened to MS's helmet design when he joined Ferrari, which makes me think its important for the team that thier drivers appear more as Ferrari drivers than individuals.
Raikkonen completes maiden Ferrari test
Tuesday, January 23rd 2007, 17:33 GMT
Kimi Raikkonen completed on Tuesday his first day of testing with the Ferrari team on a cold and rainy day at the Vallelunga circuit.
Some 50 fans huddled in the stand at the track near Rome as the 27-year-old Finn, the heir apparent to retired seven times champion Michael Schumacher, got to grips with last year's 248 F1 car.
Raikkonen focused on getting to know the car, while teammate Felipe Massa worked at the wheel of the new F2007.
Raikkonen covered a total of 39 laps with a best time of 1:15.226. Massa was quicker with a best time of 1:14.493 after 74 laps.
Both Massa and Raikkonen continue testing at Vallelunga tomorrow.
Schumi's helmet was still fairly similar when he went to Ferrari. The blue on the top of his helmet stayed. He only switched to red because Barrichello's was blue and people were getting them confused on track.

Ture but his helmet also got less and less German and more and more Itlain.
I like Kimi's new lid, from the anlges I have seen with him on track it looks a little diluted but overall its a nice design.

Very true as well. I think Schumacher kept on feeling closer to the team so that is why he changed it, because he felt more Italian.
I like how Kimi's helmet is a bit less cluttered, but I did like the bigger black parts he had on the old one.

Pretty tough argument to make.
You could argue that Montoya is capable of perhaps the faster one-off lap, as his car control is thought of by many as second to none, as represented by his outstanding string of poles with an uncompetitive BMW...
However TALENT, certainly should encompass more than just the potential of speed. How about consistency, coolness under pressure, etc. etc. all are part of talent. Those are things that JPM lacks (and I'm a huge fan).
Michael was always fast, seldom made a mistake, etc. etc. I'd take that over the potential or random showings of outstanding speed.
Mentally, MS is hands and feet above JPM...

As an overall driver I agree but MS is not a perfect driver (not saying that you said that). When he had the right car and the right track he was perfect almost every single time and amazing to watch. He also had (strange to put in it in past tense) an amazing ability to change for situations, lack of gears, being but at the back of the field, rain etc. There was always something about his game that bothered the hell out me though. His red mist or as Ferg puts it, his evil twin that happens to be in the car sometimes instead of him. He would pull some reall boneheaded and exteremly dangerous moves.
Max Mosely said that he would have sent Alonso home in Hungary after he brake checked Doornbos in pratice if it were up to him but no mention of MS taking people out or putting himself and his competitors in horribly dangerous situations. I dunno know, my $0.02.

The defending champion gets #1, his teammate #2, then it follows the Constructor's championship. That's why Ferrari had 1/2 in 1996 (Michael won in '95), and 3/4 in 2000 (won constructor's in 99, but Mika won the driver's).

Oh, and news too.
Raikkonen left hoping for more
By Michele Lostia and Pablo Elizalde Wednesday, January 24th 2007, 10:42 GMT
Kimi Raikkonen admitted he was left hoping for more after his maiden test with the Ferrari team was hindered by poor weather.
The Italian squad changed their testing plans from Mugello to Vallelunga near Rome as bad weather was predicted for the former track.
As it turned out, however, Ferrari were hit by rain during their first day of work, making Raikkonen's debut more complicated.
"My debut in the Ferrari went well, but honestly I had hoped for something more: I would have liked to drive it more in the dry instead of for just five laps," Raikkonen told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"Yes, I'm happy, but I could have been a lot more. The seven tenths gap to Massa is surely down to that, because I didn't have time to change some things in the car," added the Finn, who spun spectacularly during his first day.
"These things can happen when you're looking for the limit. I tried to, but I still don't know much about the car, and in any case I never lost control so in the end the spin turned out to be quite enjoyable."
Raikkonen completed 39 laps in the old 248 F1 with a best time of 1:15.226. Teammate Felipe Massa covered 74 with the new F2007 car unveiled last week.
The Finn says he expects to test the new car next week, but admitted he saw no point in jumping straight into the F2007 without having tested the old car first.
"No, there's no point, the program is right as is. I look closely at the F2007 because I like it, and when I test it myself next week I'll know more about it," he said.
Raikkonen, who left McLaren after five years with them, is not expecting any problems adapting to his new team.
"There are many things different, I will have to get used to them, but I'm not exactly a rookie," he added.
"There's still a lot of pressure, I don't see differences from McLaren, of which I don't want to talk about anyway. It was a bit emotional, but in the circumstances I was more interested in the technical aspects than the emotional ones.
That is why I became a fan of his.
I think he's going to stay in NASCAR for a while though.
I hope the customer car thing gets figured out before the race, it'd be retarded if SA and STR can't run the customer cars this year but they could last year...and that they weren't told it was an issue before the race. I wonder if the FIA will act the same as they did in 05 with Minardi and threaten the local courts with losing the race if they did anything to get past their decision.

Wow, that is very different from last years car, at least we should be able to tell it from the other cars. I like the orange on it.
| Ferg | 01-24-2007 09:55 AM |
Wow.
Best livery I've seen in awhile.

I think it's the ugliest since the BAR001.

Hmmm... New Renault. Jury is still out for me. Maybe it's just because I liked the old colors so much. And this is so different.
I need to let it digest a bit.

Sorry, but those colors don't go together well.
| artkevin | 01-24-2007 11:08 AM |
They need to drop the yellow. It just clashes with the orange way too much for me.

Agreed...looks hideous to me. They either need to ditch the orange or the blue and it would look pretty decent. Its a far cry from their attractive old livery.

I like the clashing of colors...but I'm an IT person, so I am not what anyone would call an artists.

Weather gods not smiling on Ferrari...
Ferrari hindered by poor weather
Wednesday, January 24th 2007, 16:29 GMT
The Ferrari team were again hit by poor weather at the Vallelunga circuit, where the Italian squad are carrying out their testing programme this week.
Kimi Raikkonen continued with his acclimatisation to his new team, again driving the old 248 F1 car, but the heavy rain and even a hailstorm made it impossible for the Finn to complete his programme.
Raikkonen covered just 20 laps with a best time of 1:22.299, while teammate Felipe Massa, at the wheel of the F2007, completed 31 with a fastest one of 1:18.767.
Following the poor day's work, the team have decided to expand their test, which will now finish on Friday.
Ferrari were originally scheduled to test at Mugello, but they decided to move to Vallelunga because of predicted snow.
Count me with those saying that Renault livery is ugly. And I agree, the yellow is what ruins it.

After a second look - I agree with our resident artist. The scheme does nothing for me.
If you have too many sponsors with differing color schemes, I love the idea of Honda's zipper car. That thing ruled. I know you couldn't get away with ripping it off - but it's better than this hodge-podge.

Now that I look at it some more, I agree with Jody and Kevin.
The zipper car was cool, stupid that the FIA wouldn't let them run separately sponsors cars, but I think it was because no one else had thought of it before.
