Berger: Bourdais in line for 2008 seat
By Jonathan Noble Wednesday, December 20th 2006, 10:17 GMT
Sebastien Bourdais has been told that he is definitely in the frame for a race drive at Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2008 following his first test with the team at Jerez last week.
The three times Champ Car champion drove for the Italian team for three days last week, and posted lap times that were just a fraction of a second slower than 2006 race driver Vitantonio Liuzzi, but quicker than Scott Speed.
Those performances left team owner Gerhard Berger impressed enough to already put Bourdais on the shortlist for 2008 - even though he has ruled out any attempt to buy the driver off his Newman/Haas race deal for next year.
"Yes, he is definitely in the frame for 2008," Berger told autosport.com. "But not for 2007, as he has a contract. I would like him to honour that, absolutely."
Berger said that Bourdais's pace in the test was just what he had expected after agreeing to try out the Frenchman.
"I think he did a bloody good job," said Berger. "He delivered what I had expected of him and he is a good, talented driver.
"I have followed his recent performances and have seen for a while that he was doing a good job in the States."
Although Bourdais has been ruled out of the Toro Rosso equation for 2007, Berger says that the futures of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Speed have still not been decided.
"We are considering what to do, and we have not finished all our discussions," he said. "I would say our two guys, Tonio and Scott, are on pole position, but there are still a few things we have to sort out.
"We are close to finding out, and will have something to say by the end of the year."

Speed better step his game up or there won't be any more US drivers.
| StuBeck | 12-20-2006 11:36 AM |
I think Speed will have a much better year than Liuzzi next year, but I also think that they both have a chance of being in F1 next year. With two more drivers in 08, both will have a good chance of staying in. Both have also shown good race pace, and Liuzzi has very good car control.
| artkevin | 12-20-2006 12:27 PM |
Anyone else notice that Luzzi is one of only people to test for 2 teams at one time? He is often in the RBR2 and STR01 at the same track. I still think he is the favored son of Red Bull even though Speed's numbers were pretty good compared to Vit's.
| StuBeck | 12-20-2006 12:48 PM |
I agree, part of it could be Webber not testing for some reason, and Speed has been hurt so that is a reason he isn't driving it.
I do hope speed gets the drive this year, but if its like this year and he doesn't prove himself, he will be out of the team next year.
Montezemolo: Raikkonen must win '07 title

By Michele Lostia Wednesday, December 20th 2006, 17:50 GMT
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says Kimi Raikkonen must seize the opportunity and win the world championship for the Italian team next season.
With rivals Renault having captured the title in the past two years, di Montezemolo believes that Raikkonen must fulfil his potential in 2007 and win his first title, which the Ferrari president believes would have already happened had it not been for poor car reliability at McLaren.
"It must be said that in 2005 Raikkonen would have won the championship with a more reliable car," he was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.
"He broke down five times, and he was always in the lead. So now he must understand this is the time to win the title.
"(Felipe) Massa goes extremely quickly and maybe he will be faster systematically. I hope they will both go quickly."
He added: "We are ready to get back to winning ways. This way Jean Todt would be able to retire serenely and so would I.
"Schumacher arrived at the right time and now arrives Raikkonen, also at the right time."
Amid continued questioning about Raikkonen's partying lifestyle, di Montezemolo said he has no concerns about the Finn's approach to the job.
"It happens to everyone to get drunk at times," he said. "(Eddie) Irvine was a bit like that too. It also happened to a guy from Kerpen, no matter how difficult it is to believe it.
"I'm not worried at all about Kimi. He is motivated and he has the right approach with Ferrari."
Did they just switch to that? I thought the GP Masters were using a heavily modified Reynard Champ Car chassis fitted with a Nicholson-McLaren (no relation as far as I know) V8. I wouldn't have thought there were enough DP01s to go around for two series yet.

Adrian Sutil lands last open seat.
Sutil lands Spyker race seat
By Jonathan Noble Thursday, December 21st 2006, 09:49 GMT
Japanese Formula Three champion Adrian Sutil has landed the second race seat at Spyker for next season, the team announced this morning.
The German driver, who had initially only been expected to be Spyker's test driver in 2007, beat Tiago Monteiro to the race seat after weeks of speculation about who would be Christijan Albers' teammate.
Sutil impressed the team with several strong showings during Friday outings this year, and was known to have been a favourite of team principal Colin Kolles. He has signed a long-term contract with the team.
Although Sutil told autosport.com last month in Macau that he believed he only had a slim chance of securing a race drive, his management pushed hard and agreed a deal with the team earlier this week.
Speaking about the news, Sutil said: "I really enjoyed being in the F1 paddock this year and to be honest I thought I would be a test driver in 2007.
"Colin Kolles and (team owner) Michiel Mol have been fantastically patient and supportive while this package became reality. I look forward to repaying their faith in me but right now I'm just going to enjoy the best Christmas present ever."
Kolles added: "This is a great signing for team but also a proud one for me personally. Adrian made his F3 debut with Team Kolles in 2004 and quite obviously had huge potential when he scored his first pole position in his third race.
"He has driven for two great teams since then and matured very quickly. Everyone at Spyker was hugely impressed when he drove for us in 2006 which is why we have worked long and hard to get him in the race team."
Sutil won the Japanese F3 crown for TOM'S this year, and was Lewis Hamilton's teammate at ASM in the Formula Three Euroseries in 2005, finishing second in the championship. He finished third in the Macau Grand Prix this year.
His appointment to the race seat at Spyker brings an end to Monteiro's chances of staying in F1 next season. The Portuguese driver had believed he was close to a deal to remain for a third year with the team, but will now have to consider his options in the sport.
Mol claimed that Sutil's long-term contract with the team was indicative of the team's commitment to F1.
"Being able to sign Adrian on a long-term contract is yet another strong signal of Spyker's vision and commitment to rebuild the team around young and talented people," he explained. "Adrian will grow with the team and will be a major asset as we target success in years to come."
Well, except for the STR seats.
I liked Tiago, but he didn't really do much, and I think its his lack of money which lost him the seat. Hopefully with the cost savings stuff this year it'll mean less requirements for stuff like that.

People think of red bull and think they have an unlimited budget. While they do have a lot of money, they do have no sponsors, and also have no pay drivers...and TWO teams. So they have to put some of the thought process of "how are we going to pay for this" into the picture.

| StuBeck | 12-21-2006 01:31 PM |
Probably 10mil or something, too much for anyone sane to do. It sounds like SB really wants to do the right thing and stay with his contract.
I think he could actually have a chance in the RBR team and not STR in 08. Coulthard is one of my favorite drivers, but he's getting old.

i think the only chance Coulthard has is if Webber cant do anything with the car either. If hes completely outclassed, I see him retiring end of the year. If hes close to Webber, then hes got no reason to leave.

It will be interesting, Webber is an awesome guy, bu he's fairly constantly disappointed me with his race pace and ability to drive. Not that I won't be rooting for the guy, but he needs to put a season together for once and not only have one or two great drives and a lot more "meh" ones. I think one of them will be out by the end of the season.

 WHA?
I have to completely disagree with you Stu.
Webber could have had 2 or 3 podiums (Monaco comes to mind) in 06 in a crap car. Nico only had 1 chance (Bahrain) to do that but got in a wreck turn 1. Webber always flatters the car and gets little credit for it. He had the same problem at Jag that he could qualify but not race, or so they say. Everytime he has gone head to head has impressed if not shown brightly.
My only problem is that he verges on blocking sometimes. On the other hand, a lot of current drivers say he 100% fair because he only makes 1 move.

Yea, I agree. A few times a year he has awesome drives (Australia, Monaco immediately come to mind) and other times he does nothing (thinking about the end of the year when he could barely make it out of the first qualifying session.) He is a very talented drive, but he makes a lot of mistakes, or just simply uninspired drives.

I have always given him the benefit of the doubt and compared him to his teammates. I can't think of one time other then Bahrain that his teammate was clearly better then him. I know his teammates have often been less then stellar (Nico, Yoong, Klien, Wilson and Heidfeld) but they have all been F1 drivers which in my book makes them a good basis to go off of.

I've always been rather 'meh' on Webber. He was touted as the next best thing when he arrived in F1, but like most of the other drivers who got the same introduction (Button comes to mind), he's never really been all that impressive. Maybe he just needs is the right car since I felt the same way about Alonso when he was at Minardi.

Yea, he's not slow, but I'm expecting him to be able to destroy his teammates like others are. I think he needs a fast car to get the motivation to do as well as he should be able to.

I think this season is his chance. Newey + Renault should be a damn good combination, so this should be his clear chance to show any talent he does (or does not) have. Id really put Button in the same category as Webber. He could be a great driver, but hasnt had the car to do it. Not much has come from any of the Hondas in recent years, but its the exact same thing, where hes never had a good teamate to out-do him, at least since Ive been watching.
My only problem is that he verges on blocking sometimes. On the other hand, a lot of current drivers say he 100% fair because he only makes 1 move.
That one move always seems to be to take the other guy to the wall.
I love Webbo but some of the defensive moves he's pulled make Schumacher look like a kitten. :D

I heard an interview with PDLR that asked about when Webber took him ALL the way to the wall in Bahrain. Varsha, Hobbs and Matchett were all up in arms about how over the top it was, and I agree. PDLR on the other hand didn't care. He said Webbo was completely within his rights to do it and he said he would have done the same thing. Dangerous as hell in my eyes but as long as they all play by the same rules I'm cool with it.

Its also something that you don't see how big of a deal it is when you're in the car. F1 drivers have to deal with a lot of bad stuff, so something like that, which they have control over, they usually won't make a big deal out of, unless they think they can get the other driver banned for a race or penalized.
I think the racing would be better if the drivers stopped blocking so much.

I agree Stu.
I think F1 has the best solution so far. I HATE the no blocking rule in Champ Car. I remember when Legge basically had to concede the win when she was in Atlantics becuase she made move on a competitor. The move was safe but they had a zero tolerance rule. Let them race and call them in if its uunsafe.

I know the GP legends race is old news...
But does anyone else think those are the cars F1 should be running?
650 hp, no traction control...
It was WAY more entertaining to see those guys all crossed up trying to lay down the power. Was really a great display of driving. It seems silly that the young "stars" have traction control, yet the "has beens" are out there at 60 years old, sawing at the wheel and tap-dancing on the loud pedal to keep it straight...
It would be a lot of fun to see todays drivers in something similar...

I agree that it would be more exciting seeing them drive cars with no TC. But I guess in a way, F1 is the pinnacle of not only technology, but car development as well. So it would not make sense for them to take a step backward and remove traction control altogether.
Maybe they should start a seperate series for that. I would watch that. haha

I like the tread at the bottom, but it didn't make sense to pay 10 bucks more for what was essentially the same shoe.

They're going to take out TC soon with the spec ECU I hope. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports, but it is also supposed to be the top of driving talent. Having stuff like TC doesn't help that.
| TimStevens | 12-22-2006 10:24 AM |
IMHO the pinnacle of motorsports is also the pinnacle of technology, and spec ECU doesn't equal that.
