Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 1

D Money 03-16-2007 06:20 PM

Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays?
Couldn't really find a specific enough forum, but hopefully this works.

Those honda kids have crazy shaved engine bays, which look sooo dope! I was thinking of possibly doing a v-mount, shaving my engine bay, getting it painting, etc. They actually weld all the holes, re-located the battery, smooth down the shock towers and fender wells, and completely paint them to match the car. Can it be done on a subaru? Has anyone done it before?

I really want to come out with a really sick looking engine bay, and I guess if im going to do it, im going all-out. ;)

here are just some pics of what other people have done:

here is a thread with hundreds of different engine bays completely shaved.

I think those look pretty nice.

There's no link at the bottom of your post, however.
turbokonejo 03-16-2007 06:24 PM

Yup it would look sick. I had my turbokonejo aka MK1 VW Rabbit pritty much looking like that. Lots of Vdub kids do it too. Not sure if it can be done on the subie but I think it would be hot. Do it D.
skate enjoi 03-16-2007 06:27 PM

my battery is in my trunk... does that count?
impreza97 03-16-2007 06:29 PM

yes, lots of VW kids do it as well. I know we have more stuff in the engine bay, but we can clean it up a little.

I guess I could move the battery to the trunk, take out the window washer tank and those misc hoses etc, weld up the holes and make it clean. Then paint it a fresh color after its completely smooth.

A nice rotated turbo kit, v-mount or reversed manifold to reduce piping, and im sure it will turn out wild.

I wanted to see if anyone has done this yet or even plans on doing it.
jdmdave 03-16-2007 06:35 PM

i just say do it and dont look back!

I'm hoping by atleast summer I have the new block and rotated turbo kit, so while the motor is out ill just go to town. My friend welds, im re-painting the car so ill spray it then, and ill powdercoat the brackets and tanks. Then the engine bay will be clean enough to eat off of! I'll come up with something crazy, don't you worry!
AWDrft 03-16-2007 06:51 PM

if someone does this to a subaru post a pic cause it would be sick

silverwerx 03-16-2007 07:00 PM

we're working on this exact thing on alex's car shortly
geist 03-16-2007 07:26 PM

You'll definitley have a nice advantage of being able to do it while the engine's out, i've heard of ppl who do it up the hardway, which is a nightmare!
Pathetic idea unless you're gonna have a lot of room to breath...

I'll be doing all that to my project car.. and then maybe once that project car is done my subaru (daily driver) can have enough downtime to clean it up..

It's a lot of work, but makes life so much easier keeping everything clean...
Also, make sure you do a DAMN neat/clean job of labeling and sorting your wires and ****, because if you need to replace wires or something, and they're all just jumbled behind the firewall or whatever, it's going to be a ****ing chore and a half.
we're working on this exact thing on alex's car shortly
Great minds think alike. No one has done it to a subaru yet, so im definately shooting to do it asap. It makes the engine look so sick, im sure if a couple nice wrx's do it now, it will turn into a fad.

Team mates with shaved and tucked engine bays? wildness!
rexspeedmaster 03-16-2007 08:42 PM

Those things look awesome, but i think it would be really hard with a subaru because of all the vacum lines and everything for the turbo. idk if you i say do it and post up pics as to what it looks like.
vipernj 03-16-2007 08:49 PM

wow.. One of my friends did a wireless engine bay in his ITR... took a while but looked friggin sweet!
robbieshonda 03-16-2007 09:13 PM

Ive had 2 1 in a 98 dx boosted b swapped and wiretucked.
amd a 99si with a tuck k20 I loved em both
5spdfrk 03-16-2007 09:22 PM

The H/A guys take out A/C, PS, and CC which cleans it up a good bit. Tuck the headlight harness in the fenderwells, and reroute the fuse box behind the glovebox area/ dash. As planned, put the battery in the trunk.

Unfortunately, we have a lot more electrical stuff to deal with then a lot of the H/A guys do.

GL, and keep us posted.
russd32 03-16-2007 09:26 PM

Is the juice worth the squeeze? In your case I'd say yes since yours is a show car. I don't think I've ever seen a tucked engine bay on a suby but I'm sure it would look good. I don't know how hard it would be but I've always liked the look of engine bays with flat panels. I've seen it alot on muscle cars.

Like this.

5spdfrk 03-16-2007 09:31 PM

Oh yeh, and you could remove your MC by using this wilwood setup:

kaos200 03-16-2007 09:35 PM

I've always wanted to get mine as shaved as possible, like an old muscle car without any wires. I haven't painted the engine bay body color because I'm awaiting a full respray, but I did shave as much of the wiring as I could (subarus are harder to hide wiring then honda's are since all our stuff is right on top).
There's only one wire loom to the right, and a set of grouped looms from behind the engine.

Yeah, im only looking at doing something like that. I don't need a full wire tuck, im just looking for a nice clean engine bay, with the sides of the shock towers and fender wells all shaved. I'm not really worried about the wires on top of the engine, the vacum lines or anything like that. I guess a simple shaved engine bay, reversed manifold, and rotated kit with the sides all cleaned up will be just fine.

I was more posting this thread to see if other had the idea or have already done it. More pics please!

GripGC8 03-17-2007 02:13 PM

the gobstopper has a shaved and tucked engine bay.

my gc is going through shaving and tucking as we speak...ill have it done by the end of this month, still trying to figure out how to clean up the abs lines..might have to just get rid of abs all together.

i alsho shaved and tucked my brothers twin turbo 5.0 mustang..looks ****ing sick!...all you see is 1 vacumn line and the injector plugs.

i came from the honda crowd to subaru and im suprised at the lack of good DIY in the subaru crowd.

It is very nice to see this thread here at nasioc. I would love to see shaved and tucked bays as the new suby trend. However it would take up too much time and effort for me to undertake this process.

GripGC8 03-18-2007 03:44 PM

why is D money crazy?

tucking the engine bay is somthing anyone with common sense can do in thier free time on a weekend.

shaving the engine bay requires a little more balls/ experience as it requires the know how of welding, bodywork and paint...most people will pay for this but some of us do it for a living.

the new Import Tuner out right now has a decent - not great - article on exactly this. personally, i feel like it's a lot easier to shave a flat-top motor bay than it would be to make ours look less cluttered and sloppy.

i too would like to see some tucked bays, but i feel like it would take a lot to strip down a wrx engine bay.
Russell Rogers 03-18-2007 10:20 PM

Wiht the Subaru engine bays its more about hiding and making it look nice. Most stuff can be tucked though. I am doing it right now in my Legacy. YOu have to remove all of the front body panels... ie.... hood, front bumper, both fenders, grill, headlights. It takes alot of ingenuity and patience. I am taking my time. I figure I could do it in a weekend, but i want it done right. SO I figure good couple weeks working on it alittle bit at a time will net me an awesome result.
D Money is crazy because..look at his car. I meant crazy in a good way.
lol lol

On a side note, it should be super easy to do a wrx engine. Think about it. On the right side, you delete the window washer fluid tank, put the battery in the trunk, and remount the fuse box under the dash. Sand it down, weld it up, bondo it so it's all done smoothly and prep for paint. For the left side, you delete the factory boost solenoid, move the power steering pump, and do the same process you did to the right side. You either get a v-mount or reversed manifold to delete the piping from going up on the sides, and a rotated turbo kit with a 4" inlet, blow through maf on the i/c pipe, and run a screen or small intake on the turbo. CAKE!

If I have to be the first, I will. I am so into this look it's not even funny. I mean, im not going to go overboard, im just trying to clean it up a little bit. My dad gave me the idea after seeing his hotrod finished, and looking at the engine bay and seeing a fully polished 540ci just chilling with nothing else, just the MOTOR! It will take time, but once I finish up the motor and turbo kit, I will go to town.

For the most part, doing the body work to the shock towers and fender wells should be easy. I have a friend that welds and I am always at the body shop doing work on my car, so it could probably get done in a matter of a weekend or something. Who knows, but again, I was really making this thread to see if anyone else thought of it or has done it before.

GripGC8 03-19-2007 05:26 PM

its all about extending wires and tucking the harness so its run as cleanly as possible.

battery goes in the trunk, ABS gets deleted, fuse box goes behind glove box yadda yadda yadda

its pretty much common sense and just using your own best judgment...

ill post pics of my work in progress in a week or so.

Could you re mount our fuel filter in the trunk? Behind the Rear seat?

Firewall wires can be tucked behind the firewall. right?

Reverse the throttle cable so its a direct shot to the firewall.

Blow by hoses can be run under the engine.

Get an aftermarket tank for the Power Steering and Coolant tanks.

Just some ideas.

PS nice 02!

i would think the fuel filter could be relocated thats a good idea. i plan on getting the forged motorsports power steering and coolant tanks.

theres a link on that honda-tech page on how to conver your lines in your engine bay to those ss lines. I think theres gonna be too many wires in the wrx engine bay to hide, I may just do a few of those since they look nice
BREWPUBEAVER 04-03-2007 02:18 AM

is there a performance gain at all?

with all of the wires running so close to the motor, wouldnt you have to be really care full and always be checking them?

seems like this is a true traylor queen mod only. if you wanted to drive your car hard, and it gets hot, you will melt something...

Looks dope for show cars

no performance gain, but a tidy easy to work in engine bay that looks sharp

Our cars really don't need the full tuck.

Like I said, battery goes in the trunk, re rout the fuse box, delete the window washer tank and that side is clear. Then take out the factory boost silenoid, move the abs or delete it, whichever you may prefer, move the power steering pump slightly over and your golden. No chance for wires getting melted or anything like that, since you really don't have to do much.

Did you see the pics of the gobstopper white gc? That's a full blown race car with a fully shaved and tucked bay. ;)
BREWPUBEAVER 04-03-2007 12:34 PM

guess i dont care if i have a busy engine bay.... when i pass people i dont get those kind of comments, lol...
