Barcelona, Day One
Massa quickest as F1 returns to work
Tuesday, November 28th 2006, 16:09 GMT
Formula One roared back into action on Tuesday at the Barcelona circuit, where nine of the eleven Grand Prix teams began their winter testing programmes.
With all the teams using Bridgestone tyres, Ferrari showed their experience will count next season, with Felipe Massa topping the times for the Italian squad.
Test driver Luca Badoer posted the third fastest time of the day.
McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa, however, followed Brazilian Massa closely, less than three tenths of a second behind in his team's maiden test with the Japanese tyres.
De la Rosa worked alongside Briton Lewis Hamilton, who managed 63 laps on his way to the sixth fastest time of the day. Hamilton caused an early red flag when his car stopped on track with a mechanical failure.
The BMW-Sauber team continued to show good form, with German Nick Heidfeld fourth fastest also in the German squad's first taste of the Bridgestone rubber. Teammate Robert Kubica was seventh quickest in the second F1.06.
Honda, Renault, Toro Rosso, Red Bull and Super Aguri also completed their first day of work with their new tyres following Michelin's exit.
Briton Anthony Davidson made his debut with the Super Aguri team, driving an interim car, appearing very similar to last year's Honda RA106. Davidson was 11th fastest.
More to follow.
Today's times:
Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Massa Ferrari 1:17.160 52
2. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes 1:17.455 68

They don't usually release what chassis numbers they're running at tests, but chances are it's one of Raikonnen's cars.
De La Rosa would be running his usual car.
You raise a good point though, with two new drivers who's going to get Kimi's mechanincs and race engineer? Hamilton or Alonso?

I'd love to see them do their early season testing in unpainted cars like the NASCAR boys do. It looks so tough. :) Just a bare/primered carbon fiber body with a couple of the major sponsor stickers on there. Imagine how bad-ass an F1 car would look in bare CF!
Anyway, nothing meaningful to contribute...

On the Super Aguri front, fantastic news for Davidson and Sato!
Aguri to run a modified Honda car in 2007
By Jonathan Noble and Craig Scarborough Tuesday, November 28th 2006, 21:01 GMT
Super Aguri are set to run next season a modified version of this year's Honda Racing RA106, autosport.com has learned.
The team have spent weeks considering their options for 2007 after an F1 Commission meeting in Paris in September all but scuppered their original plans to run the actual RA106 next season.
Despite the setback, Super Aguri's managing director Daniel Audetto insisted that their 2007 car would be the most competitive they could get 'within the existing regulations'.
Those plans for next year appear to still be based around the RA106, after Super Aguri turned up for the first day of winter testing at Barcelona today with a new interim chassis that looks almost identical to this year's Honda Racing car.
The car, which is called a Super Aguri, has been produced with increased assistance from Honda - who are keen to do everything they can to help the new outfit.
Audetto told autosport.com: "This is the car we will use until the SA07 is ready at the beginning of next year - probably at the beginning of February. We will use the information from this car on the 07."
Although the team have not fully confirmed their strategy, it appears that to run their version of the RA106 they will exploit the same loophole in F1's regulations that allowed Scuderia Toro Rosso to run a modified version of the 2005 Red Bull RB1 this year.
Toro Rosso were able to do so because the car parts had been designed by an independent supplier and not a rival team.
FIA president Max Mosley said earlier this year, when commenting about the Toro Rosso situation: "My understanding is that with Ford/Jaguar, the parts were, for some obscure reason to do with tax and the internal structure of the Ford Motor Company, designed and built by a company that was not the racing team.
"If the parts are designed and manufactured by another company, and you own the intellectual property rights of the car that requires them, then it is completely legitimate.
"The thing you can't do is if you're Williams you can't run a McLaren front wing. But both Williams and McLaren could run a Lola front wing."
Audetto has confirmed that Super Aguri will be leading the design process and assembling the car themselves - but that there had been input from Honda and that an independent party was involved in the design process.
"There is more collaboration from Honda and the engineers are the same from Honda," he said. "There is also more collaboration from Tochigi (Honda's R&D facility). You can see already that we have more support. We are looking forward to having a much better car for 2007."
When asked whether the SA07 would be a completely new design or one based on the RA106, Audetto said: "It started with more collaboration from Honda, although the design is managed by us.
"With a lot of support from Tochigi we constructed a monocoque and we assembled it in Leafield. There is an external consultancy firm involved in the process." ~and that right there is the loophole...
Super Aguri's plans to run a modified RA106 will be a massive boost to the team and their drivers Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson, who can now expect increased competitiveness throughout 2007.
Sato starred in the season-closing Brazilian Grand Prix with a tenth placed finish in the modified 2002 Arrows.
Jordan had probably the sickest car ever though with a bare CF car when they launched. I haven't seen any real pictures of it though, just a model of it.
It was the RBR2 still testing today. They're just trying to get used to the bridgestone tyres since its been 5 years since they last ran them.
In entirely unrelated news, I HATE Ant's helmet, idk what it is about it, but its just really bad.

This is good, they won't have other huge things like "lets decrease the engine size in 18 months because the teams are too retarded to decide among themselves how to slow down the cars." This was also the whole point of switching to one tyre supplier. They would slow down the cars by 3 seconds a lap each year (or more) but the tyre manufacters would give the teams that speed back in rubber alone.

I think it's bloody brillant. Taking tyres out of the equation is another way to (albeit slightly) take tech and mechanical dominance out of the picture and place more emphasis on driver skill.
All IMHO. I'm the same knucklehead who wants the elimination of ALL forms of electromechanical aids - no traction control, stability control, no electronic throttle or brakes.

I was simply hoping for a freeze in development, instead of retreating.
To me, it feels just like the daft engine specs they just decided to force in the future.
To each his own though.

28/11/2006
After a month-long break, the Formula One teams return to action today at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona for the first of three year-ending test sessions.
Reigning World Champions Renault will be testing with Heikki Kovalainen and Brazilian tester Nelson Piquet Junior, while Ferrari are expected to have Felipe Massa, Luca Badoer and Marc Gene all out on track.
McLaren, who are now without Fernando Alonso until the end of the year, are expected to run new signing Lewis Hamilton and test driver Pedro de la Rosa.
Honda are without Jenson Button for the first test as he is recovering from a rib injury. Instead Rubens Barrichello and Christian Klien will be taking the testing duties.
Former Honda test driver Anthony Davidson as well as Mark Webber will both be making their debuts for their new teams. Davidson is off to Super Aguri while Webber is now a Red Bull Racing driver.
Webber, however, will be running in unmarked overalls as he remains under contract with Williams until the end of the year.
Williams, Toyota and BMW are also expected to test this week, however, the Spyker team, formerly Midlands, won't be in action until the new year.

McLaren confirm Hakkinen F1 test
Wednesday, November 29th 2006, 12:35 GMT
Two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen will return to the cockpit of a Formula One car tomorrow when he drives a McLaren at the Barcelona circuit.
As predicted by autosport.com yesterday, the Finn will take to a Grand Prix track in a Formula One car for the first time since the 2001 Japanese GP.
McLaren said the test will be part of the team's winter testing programme.
"I'm really excited about driving a McLaren Mercedes Formula One car again and to be re-engaging with the team," said Hakkinen.
"I have followed the Formula One World Championship closely since my retirement at the end of the 2001 season, but it was when I was at this year's Brazilian Grand Prix as a guest of the team that I really felt I would like to get a chance to drive a Formula One car again.
"I have recently spent some time in McLaren Mercedes' simulator in Woking and to get the possibility to drive the MP4-21 is something I'm really looking forward to. I would like to thank Ron and Norbert for making this happen."
Hakkinen, 38, asked for the opportunity to re-familiarise himself with a Formula One car, and the team will use this test to benefit from his experience.
"We are delighted to provide Mika with the opportunity to drive a Formula One car again," said team boss Ron Dennis. "He is really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of a current Formula One car.
"A driver of Mika's calibre and experience can only bring added value to our testing programme and his feedback after Thursday's running will be valuable to the team in our preparations for the 2007 season.
"However at this stage there are no plans for Mika to conduct further tests for the team."
I'll send you a case of beer (of your choosing) if they pull that off.
Massa stays on top at Barcelona
Wednesday, November 29th 2006, 16:15 GMT
Brazilian Felipe Massa continued to set the pace at the Barcelona circuit, where the Ferrari driver enjoyed another productive session.
Massa was nearly seven tenths quicker than yesterday as he took full advantage of his team's experience with the Bridgestone tyres used by all teams for the first time in this maiden test of the off-season.
The Ferrari team completed another solid day of work, with test driver Luca Badoer third fastest in the second car from the Italian team.
The Ferrari duo were split by BMW-Sauber's Nick Heidfeld, second fastest but over 0.7 seconds off the pace set by Massa.
Pedro de la Rosa was again the fastest of the McLaren drivers, outpacing teammate Lewis Hamilton, the British rookie finishing less than two tenths of a second behind the Spaniard as he continued with his acclimatisation process.
Frenchman Olivier Panis was back in action for the Toyota team in his penultimate test for the Japanese squad before he retires from the sport at the end of the year. The veteran driver posted the fifth fastest time in the quickest of the Toyotas.
The second car from the Cologne-based outfit was driven by Japanese Kamui Kobayashi, who made his debut at the wheel of a Formula One car after winning the qualification race at the Macau F3 event earlier this month.
Kobayashi finished at the bottom of the times after 81 laps.
Austrian Christian Klien was also making a debut today, driving for the Honda team for the first time since he was signed as a test driver to replace Anthony Davidson. Klien completed 79 laps and finished as 11th fastest.

Thanks Ferg I randomly make stuff up all the time. On a different note, I think we might see some great things from BMW Sauber. Not saying they are going to win the championship but if they continue from where they ended last season they could be in a very nice spot.
