Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 2

Cusson 04-03-2007 01:15 PM

d - in my opinion if youre gonna clean up the engine bay, mise-well do the sti motor swap or do a built motor (you know you want to ;))! then id do a v-mount intercooler for sure and some sort of rotated turbo setup with no intake, just leave it open! then for your car, id have the engine bay painted white. i think itd look really good, definately a project you should do. :)

what should i do to clean up my engine bay?
wrxburton 04-03-2007 01:48 PM

the stainless hose that people put the wires in look nice but retain alot of heat and if you have it to close to something hot all the wires in it will melt together and that would be BAD. Better off using the heat resistant hoses thats silverish.

also if you move the fuse box to your glove box you will have to extend alot of wires and with that a few shielded wires that if you do not re-shield will not function properly. It wouldent be that hard but no matter what we can not fully tuck all our wires due to the position of our injectors which are on the outsides. Those wires would always be visable along with our wires for our sparkplugs. which cant be hidden fully due to position as well.

has anyone ever taken the left fender off the car and seen how much wiring is behind it? Theres a lot! And to extend all of it wouldent be impossible but to do it right with out messing one solder up is a real risk IMO. Also you would then need to snake all of those wires thru under the dash to the glovebox and then cut into your firewall and figure out how long to extend all those wires that go into the engine bay.

it would take much longer then one weekend. It would look sick if you could get most of it hidden and cleaned up but its alot fo work. Civics are easy they have half the wires we do. Im not saying it cant be done im saying it would be harder then everyone is expecting.

But hey if someone finds a way then thats awsome . id totally rock a wireless engine bay without a doubt.

No mater what you do with the wiring your still going to have hoses all over the place. In my opinion changing the routing of the wiring harness and making custom fluid lines is your best bet. Its takes less time, A LOT less money and the result is outstanding. I removed everything I didn't use from my harness, ran all new stainless steal lines including, Power steering, coolant, and fuel. I reversed the manifold, put the alternator where the AC condenser was and mounted the coolant tank for the turbo underneath the throttle body. Custom intercooler piping moved everything I could to the other side of the fender aprons (HID, kit, Fuse Box, etc.) Made everything color matched, painted the engine bay gloss black and ended up with a very clean engine bay with the wiring still there. With all the way the engine is made your going to put so much time into wiring and your still going to have a considerable amount of visible wiring, hoses, and accessories attached to you car.

You could also cut the metal out from your frame rails to your strut towers and mount everything farther back and make a cover plate. Same with the fire wall so the crap is still there but its covered up by a smooth piece of metal. I have done that before. Not to a Subaru but if you good with metal and bad at wiring then that way is for you. I would have done it to my car but I didnt have a welder at the time.

No, that's the hold up. I'm waiting! I'm going to do a nice custom polished-rotated turbo kit, blow through maf, reversed intake mani, etc. I could do the engine bay now, BUT I would rather do it when the motor and everything is out and im ready for the swap. As for the paint, im not exactly sure ill have a white wrx for much longer, but sure, the engine bay will be color matched. ;)

you should get one of those color polished funnels for the inlet of your turbo since youre not doing an intake. jdm ftw

btw - sounds like a good plan

Lose:
- AC
- Cruise control

Relocate / replace
- Battery
- Coolant Overflow
- Washer fluid
- Coolant surge tank
- breather hoses

Easy one- flip the MAF pipe over so it's hidden when looking at it from the top.

oh, and last but not least... mise-well? that's a new one.

KISS (keep it simple stupid) cover it with a legacy gt engine shield, i dont know if it will fit under the hood after you put in the plastic manifold they use along with all of the other funny things they do diferently on the lgt's. the i/c parts will have to be modified but with the kind of time and money that can be tossed into those show cars, im sure it would look sweet

Bad Wagon 04-30-2007 03:22 PM

I just finished putting my engine togather yesterday and I have to say its cleaner but by no means anything like what has been posted. I still have quite a few exposted wires and even though I reduced my wiring by almost half I fould it hard to hide it all and still make is some what practical for expantion and maintanence. I race and tinker with my car to much to do that so for a pratical cleaning of the engine bay I think it hit it pretty good.

I totally agree with the other members on the whole "naked" engine bay though.

now the real question is why would you come into a thread titled shaved, wire tucked and custom engine bays if you just want to bitch about how dirty is better. dirty shows to me you dont care about your car cuz i use mine then clean it. but if you never want to clean your engine bay thats fine to just dont bash people for wanting theirs clean
