Yea this race is going to be goooooood....

Trulli never has a good race pace when he qualifies well :P Gotta love Peter's optimism.

I'm like how everyone so sure Speed won't still be in a seat next year:rolleyes:
OnTheGas 05-14-2007 03:53 PM

Speed's job
You may not like it, but Speed is on the hot-seat. Berger sent Speed an off-season message, by being very slow to sign re-sign him for 2007, and testing Bourdais. In typical Berger candor, he mentioned this in some interview. Berger wanted Speed to become more focused.

For Speed to keep his job, he will need to step it up, and become clearly faster than his team-mate each race weekend.

Maybe Scott will surprise us all. I hope so.
wvallwheeldrive 05-14-2007 04:12 PM

The only thing Berger wanted was more comitment out of Speed. He has been faster than Liuzzi, but the finishes haven't been there from mostly reliablity.
artkevin 05-14-2007 05:43 PM

Speed did great in Spain. His commitment level might be in question but that is behind the scenes so I guess I have to go with Berger on this.

STR are supposed to be testing Bourdais again soon. I hope the message was received. Good news though, there will be 2 more seats in 2008.
StuBeck 05-14-2007 06:19 PM

The driver who keeps the drive this year (or if they get two new ones) will probably get kicked out in 09 for Vettel.

I think the problem people have with Speed is the way he talks, he's very obviously a Californian, and with the stuff we've been doing lately in the world, people dislike us right now. If he's ever able to finish a race, I think Speed will do well. I personally think Coulthard and Speed are the two drivers to keep for next race. Last race Coulthard destroyed Webber, and this race, Speed did the same. The problem is both of them couldn't finish, so we didn't see it happen.

For some reason, the way Speed talks reminds me of Jensen Button, only without the British accent.

wvallwheeldrive 05-14-2007 09:03 PM

I don't think the way Speed presents himself in interviews and on TV is all that big of a problem. He deserves to ba a little cocky as do all the drivers in F1 just for getting to the postion he's in.

A little reliabilty and we may be talking about Speed getting a better seat next year.
Hamilton goes quickest at Paul Ricard

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, May 15th 2007, 16:56 GMT

Lewis Hamilton kicked off his preparations for the Monaco Grand Prix, which he has set his sights on winning, in perfect style on Tuesday when he topped pre-event testing at Paul Ricard in France.

With teams utilizing the short and tight 2D SC course, that simulates the requirements of the Monte Carlo circuit, Hamilton proved how well sorted McLaren are by setting a time almost 1.3 seconds faster than his nearest rival.

And it was not Ferrari challenging him this time, with Spanish Grand Prix winner Felipe Massa down in sixth place in the standings. Instead, Ralf Schumacher continued to show improved form for Toyota to set the second quickest time on the windy day.

Nelson Piquet Jr continued Renault's evaluations with the third quickest time, while Mark Webber put more valuable mileage on Red Bull Racing's seamless shift gearbox to set the fourth best time.

Nico Rosberg was fifth for Williams, with Christian Klien right behind Massa in seventh spot.

Timo Glock filled in for BMW-Sauber's race drivers in eighth spot, working mainly on set-up for the Monte Carlo race, also testing some new mechanical components that BMW said gave promising results.

Super Aguri's test driver James Rossiter got his first outing with the team down in ninth.

Scott Speed was 10th fastest for Scuderia Toro Rosso, with Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy the slowest man in 11th spot.

"Super" anything sounds funny. Just using that word adds so much expectation. In most cases its never going to be lived up, so most people have a hard time taking it seriously. "Super Nintendo" or "Super Mario Brothers" come to mind...

Bourdais, vs. Speed, at Scuderia Toro Rosso
Look whos there!
A few posts ago in this thread, I made a snide comment about Bourdais taking Speed's seat at STR next season. So now it seems appropriate that I should share these stories here.

First, let's look a little closer at Bourdais' test. We will examine and compare the team's brief notes from yesterday, and today.

Here is yesterday:
Toro Rosso Paul Ricard test notes 2007-05-15
Today was the first day of a four day test at the Paul Ricard test facility in the South of France. Cars were running on a track layout aimed at simulating Monaco conditions.

Strong winds made it difficult to evaluate the Monte Carlo aero settings while some mechanical problems delayed the programme. Nevertheless, Scott managed to complete 53 laps.

Sebastien Bourdais takes over driving duties tomorrow.

Scott Speed
Chassis 02,
53 laps, 1:08.143
So tough conditions, and an unreliable car... but 50+ laps, and notice Speed's time... 1:08.1

And here's today's report:
Toro Rosso Paul Ricard test notes 2007-05-16
Day 2 of the test saw Sebastien Bourdais take the wheel. Today, there were no mechanical problems, hence the large number of laps. The programme consisted of evaluating Bridgestone Potenza tyre compounds and doing long runs, while also evaluating a couple of new aerodynamic and mechanical components.

Tomorrow, all the teams switch to a longer configuration of the Paul Ricard circuit in order to simulate the Montreal track for the Canadian GP. Scott Speed will be driving.

Driver: Sebastien Bourdais
Car: STR2-02
Best lap: 1:07.743
142 laps
So Bourdais had almost 3 times the laps, (which is very good for him, since an F1 car is a bit of an adjustment to an unfamiliar driver), and his time is a muy bueno 1:07.7 vs. Speed's 1:08.1 yesterday. I'll guess that Bourdais now has a chance to land an F1 seat next season.

Now the other side of the coin... I was not aware of the rumors that Vettel is to take Speed's seat in the 2nd half of the season. (I suspect these rumors originated from the German press.) So today a story by Autosport's Jonathan Noble features Scuderia Toro Rosso's team principal, Franz Tost, squashing those rumors, and giving Speed a nice, public boost of confidence.
Toro Rosso give Speed vote of confidence
By Jonathan Noble Wednesday, May 16th 2007, 08:31 GMT

Scuderia Toro Rosso have given Scott Speed their backing amid rumours that he will be replaced by BMW test driver Sebastian Vettel from the French Grand Prix.

Team principal Franz Tost told Autosport that Toro Rosso were focusing on their technical package and were not considering any changes to their driver line-up at present.

"Up to now, nothing in this way is being discussed or planned because currently we can't complain about the drivers," Tost said.

"We first need to provide the drivers with a proper car which is reliable, and this is not the case because on Saturday we failed with gearbox and hydraulic problems.

"And apart from this, Scott has done quite a good job in Spain and from our point of view there's no reason to discuss replacing him."

Speed was 10th fastest in second practice in Spain, but had to start last after a transmission failure in Q1. He got up to 14th on the first lap, before retiring with a puncture on lap nine.

Tost added that even if Toro Rosso were interested in Vettel, they would have to negotiate a release from his BMW contract. The 19-year-old German is a Red Bull protege, but has been loaned to BMW Sauber as a test and reserve driver since mid-2006.

"Regarding Vettel, as far as I'm aware he has a contract with BMW and is running in the Renault World Series and I don't see a reason to bring him out of there because he has an existing contract," said Tost.

"He has a BMW contract. He's a Red Bull driver but contracted to BMW. I don't know the contract details but it's not currently a discussion in our team."

So to conclude,
good news today if you're a fan of Bourdais!
And good news today if you're a fan of Speed!
I happen to be both! :)

Spectacles or contacts inside the helmet
Villeneuve did, and a few others did, although a lot wear contacts to hide them. Barrichello and Ralf wear contacts while driving.
Yes, interesting! Didn't know that about those two. I recall other drivers wearing glasses in the cockpit in champ and indy car as well.

As a side note, I've been faced w/that dilema, contacts or glasses. A few years ago I was in a KT100 kart wearing contacts and a borrowed helmet that didn't fit well... On a long straight, I'm buzzing along @ whatever, 60 or 70+ mph, and wind starts flowing up inside my visor, drys up my contacts, my eyes start watering in response, and suddenly everything is blurry, and I'm wondering where is that darned braking point for the hairpin at the end of straight! Next lap or so, one contact gives up the game, and pops out. I go into the pits, hop out, go wash my hands & pull out the remaining contact, and put on my glasses, and continue the practice session. Have not worn contacts in a helmet since.

Good research but the times that Speed and Bourdais ran are on different track set ups (Monaco vs. Montreal) but the lap count is suspect.

I am a huge Bourdais fan but don't want to see Speed get the boot.

Matchett is a big South Park fan. Listen when he says "here". Half the time he sounds like Cartman. It's really funny to me to think that a mid 40s early 50s Brit watches and enjoys South Park.
Good research but the times that Speed and Bourdais ran are on different track set ups (Monaco vs. Montreal) but the lap count is suspect.
Also the testing on Tuesday was blighted by strong and changing winds as well as reliability issues for Scott.

I'm all in favor of the single car testing limit except at times like this...the guy needs track time!

I think there's more than enough season left for Speed to pull together and dust Liuzzi. Hopefully Toro Rosso will give him the car and the time.
wvallwheeldrive 05-17-2007 12:39 PM

I would love to see Sea-bas and Speed running together at STR.
artkevin 05-17-2007 01:04 PM

Speed looked great when he had the car in Spain last week (practice and 1st part of race). He did admit that he got lucky to go from 22 to 14 on the 1st lap but it shows me that he is humble and fast enough to do the job at hand.

I'll admit I was calling them "Super Happy Fun F1 Squad" for a while, in reference to Japanese anime and the weird titles they sometimes get when they come over stateside.

I think that is also more the angle Matchett, Hobbs, Varsha were going for with Super Best Friends, not the South Park reference.
OnTheGas 05-17-2007 02:19 PM

Paul Ricard Monaco set-up Tues, Wed, Canada set-up Thurs, Friday
Good research but the times that Speed and Bourdais ran are on different track set ups (Monaco vs. Montreal)...
No, you are not correct. The teams were on the Monaco lay-out both days, Tuesday May 15 (Speed 53 laps windy & unreliable), and Wed May 16 (Bourdais 142 laps).

Today, Thursday May 17, is the first day for the circuit lay-out was changed to simulate Canadian GP conditions.

BTW, Speed ran 94 laps today, and turned the 2nd fastest time of the day, 1:29.0 vs. Kimi's 1:28.8.

And again, I believe that what happened yesterday, w/Bourdais' successful test where he ran many laps and showed good speed, while at the same time STR being very public in their support for Scott, is good news for both drivers.

Alonso... what a man.
Someone kissed and told about Alonso and their sex romp! I am not sure if this is a scandal but it sure is mighty scandalous.

No pics but the text isn't exactly SFW.
FORMULA One ace Fernando Alonso spent all night testing a stunning new model... and ended up coming second.

The supercharged Spaniard drove foxy Felicity Jaine wild in a marathon romp just hours before racing at Silverstone.

But when Fernando, 25, had to perform on the race track the next day he had nothing left in the tank.

"His stamina in bed blew my mind he could literally go on for hours," said Felicity, 24. .......
I seem to recall similar stories about David Beckam...except that he stayed up all night playing videogames and underperformed in the game the next day

England's "News of the World"
This story does not seem legit.

Consider the source... "News of the World", which is an English sensationalist tabloid.

Also, consider that if one googles "Felicity Jaine", the only place on the web where this name is found is at the url of this story on the tabloid site, (or other sites linking and/or referencing it). If Alonso was dating a "Felicity Jaine" for awhile, (as is stated in the story), then, as popular as Fernando is, there would not be only one reference to her across the whole web.

Three, if this person exists, and she actually gave this interview, then it is likely that she was either paid, or she is looking for free publicity for her struggling (or non-existing) career, or both. In either case, the more sensationalist, and exagerated, the story, the better for her (more money, publicity, etc.), and the better for this rag, too.
FIA, car makers to work on F1 shake-up

By Jonathan Noble Friday, May 18th 2007, 08:35 GMT

FIA president Max Mosley has vowed to work in close co-operation with the sport's car manufacturers to ensure that a radical shake-up of Formula One rules for 2011 is a success.

The car makers involved in the sport, as well as Ford and Audi, have all been issued preliminary documents outlining a big overhaul of the sport's regulations to make it more environmentally friendly and relevant to the road car industry.

Next month's edition of F1 Racing reveals that these rules are for a turbo-compounded 2.2-litre V6, to run on bio-fuel and produce around 770bhp.

Maximum revs will be limited to 10,000rpm, and engines would be required to last five Grands Prix. Traction control, four-wheel drive and a 13-second per lap power boost facility are also being considered.

Mosley has said it is vital that such big changes are agreed with the full support of the manufacturers. As autosport.com revealed last weekend, Mosley will begin preliminary discussions about the matter at next weekend's Monaco Grand Prix prior to more serious discussions taking place in June.

Mosley said: "We are in active discussions with the major manufacturers to ensure that in future, research and development relevant only to Formula One will be discouraged, whereas that which has relevance to road car development will be encouraged.

"We understand that such an approach has broad support from the competing manufacturers and we will work closely with them to ensure that, in particular, the new environmentally relevant technologies that many of them are developing are made our priority.

"Whilst aiming to achieve these goals we will ensure that the sporting spectacle of F1 remains the same or is even improved by the new developments."

Autosport.com has seen a summary of the document issued to the manufacturers in Spain last weekend - with the FIA outlining that there is a need to create a 'healthier commercial outlook for the participants by lowering their costs' and 'the need to react to public concern about the environment.'

Although the details of the power train overhaul are not explained in detail, the document makes it clear that other developments on the car will be 'severely constrained.'

Sources have suggested that this regulations could extend as far as there being a single supplier of chassis for F1.

The document said: "This strategy now needs to evolve. How far should the FIA go on each point? The main constraint will be to avoid damage to the emotional attraction of Formula One for its fan base.

"In particular the technical awe of Formula One and its sheer speed must be retained. Step one is to develop a framework for the regulations aimed at fixing the power-train.

"Such a framework is put forward, but at each stage guidance is sought from the manufacturers. A detailed proposal can be drawn up quickly once these points are decided upon.

"This paper focuses on the 2011 power-train regulations only, but lists implications for the chassis, bodywork and sporting rules. Today the power-train is the determining step and must be decided before the remaining regulations can be detailed. "
