F1, the 2007 Edition part 17

StuBeck 02-03-2007 08:16 PM

It looks like it was modeled after a gun or something.

I think it should be a good passing zone because of the turns right before it. Two slow turns means people will be right next to one another. Then you can draft down the rest of the straight.

It isn't like china where there is banked turn where everyone has to be far away from each other and then can't get close in the next straight away.

I've hated his designs until I saw Turkey. That one is just a collection of other turns from "real" tracks that happens to work out well by the grace of God.

Bernie has said that they should get two races, which I agree with. The only real under represented areas right now are Africa and south america.
Patrick Olsen 02-04-2007 12:52 PM

Interesting that both races are in the UAE, though, but I guess at this point there really aren't any good alternatives in the region.

I assume this will be yet another track with essentially zero elevation change, which is just a waste in my opinion. Then again, the UAE has demonstrated the ability to create pretty large land features, maybe they'll build some good elevation changes. :)
sirfrankwilliams 02-04-2007 02:16 PM

"It was initially a flat island, but we've created some man-made hills, so the track will rise up and down"

I guess time will tell what that means

But id say Africa and Russia are the underrepresented one. They don't have any GP's. We need a Moscow one.

I like that track design. Looks very fast with a nice technical section in the beginning. Could make for some very good F1 starts.

I didn't forget Brazil. They have only one GP, NA has 2, Europe has like 15, Asia (which includes Russia) has 5 now, and will probably get one more in either Singapore or Japan.

They've been trying for one in Moscow, but it hasn't happened. India looks unlikely because of problems with making tracks.

If by South Amer., you mean Central America, then yes, they are underrepresented. And we're forgetting Oceania. They have a wealth of nice tracks, and I think NZ would embrace a GP.

But I'm only 17, so don't take any of this to heart.;)
StuBeck 02-04-2007 08:35 PM

No, I mean South America. One race for an entire continent is too little, especially with how many people they have.

Oceania is already represented pretty well with Australia. NZ doesn't really have any good tracks, the one used for the A1 GP wasn't really that great.
artkevin 02-04-2007 09:14 PM

Also, NZ has a population of only 4,000,000 which is the same as Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana or South Carolina (I love google). It looks like a great place but its too far away for almost everyone thats not an Aussie or a Kiwi.

I would personally like to see another USA GP and one in Russia. Also, since I am dreaming and making a wish list. BRING BACK SAZUKA! Seriously, world class track, memorable turns that take balls, faithful attendance and educated fans. What more can you ask for?

I don't think Gascoyne had much input on the design of the new car, he only arrived at Spyker in November. He should play a much bigger part in whatever B-spec version they come up with later in the season.

7 legendary Formula One rivalries

Not a bad read.
In Japan on the final race of the season, the conflict between Senna and Prost would be decided. The two cars collided, taking both drivers off the podium. McLaren had long since clinched the constructors title, but Prost took the drivers championship thanks to the disqualification of Senna by Formula One officials due to an illegal push-start after the collision.

The resulting dispute led to Prost ditching McLaren for Ferrari. In a double dj vu situation, the Japan Grand Prix would decide the points battle for a third time in 1990. Senna won the pole position and Prost started in the no. 2 spot. Senna took out Prosts Ferrari early, neither driver finished, and Senna was named champion. Senna later admitted that he had perpetuated the payback purposely.

In the end, Senna would win three titles and Prost four. Prosts last championship came in 1993, the year before Senna died on the track at San Marino. Perhaps this was the only way the most bitter rivalry the sport has ever seen could end.
-Cliff
StuBeck 02-06-2007 10:37 AM

Senna didn't get disqualified for an illegal push start, he was disqualified for not reentering the track at the exact spot he went off on. It was a BS decision, and he temporarily lost his super license for calling it what it was.

Once Prost had retired, they talked about it and came to an understanding.

What, me worry?
Renault unfazed by rivals' testing form

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, February 6th 2007, 10:25 GMT

Renault insist they have seen nothing to worry about in the performance of main opposition McLaren and Ferrari in testing so far.

Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen have not set times to match their Woking and Maranello rivals, but with Renault focusing more on reliability than performance the team are far from concerned.

"Well, McLaren and Ferrari have both confirmed that they're quick," said Renault's chief test engineer Christian Silk. "It's not really a big surprise.

"But we're a strong team too and these performances don't worry us...Our programme was probably quite different. The out-and-out lap times during the winter are almost impossible to analyse.

"One is quicker at Valencia; another is in front in Barcelona. That's not what you need to focus on at this stage."

Silk claimed that last week's poor weather at Valencia meant Renault spent little time on fine-tuning the set-up for out-and-out performance. Instead, they focused on getting valuable mileage on the new car.

"Our main aim was to test the reliability of the R27 and to rack up the miles," he explained. "We didn't run into any particular problems and we were able to do at least one race simulation per car. That's the positive side.

"And the negative? The weather: it was really dreadful, and none of the teams present managed to carry out its full programme. For example, it was just impossible to work on the set-ups; conditions were far too changeable."

When asked whether he knew what the R27 was capable of, he said: "Yes, we have a pretty good idea. But we haven't yet looked at this part of our programme. It's always better to look for performance with a reliable car rather than trying to make a quick car reliable."
Jerez testing.
De la Rosa fastest at Jerez

Tuesday, February 6th 2007, 16:39 GMT

he McLaren Mercedes team continued to show their strong form in pre-season testing, with Pedro de la Rosa finishing on top of the times on the opening day of this week's test at Jerez.

De la Rosa, at the wheel of the new MP4-22, set a best time of 1:20.001, just edging the Williams FW29 of Alex Wurz, who made his debut with the new car unveiled last Friday.

Spaniard de la Rosa worked alongside Lewis Hamilton, fourth quickest after 111 laps. The Briton will be joined by world champion Fernando Alonso tomorrow.

The Williams team showed promising form in their first test with the new Toyota-powered car, with Wurz finishing just 0.035 seconds behind de la Rosa. The Austrian's day, however, finished early when he stopped on track at the Angel Nieto corner with just a couple of minutes of the session left to run.

German Nico Rosberg also took to the track in the new Williams, covering 62 laps on his way tot he ninth fastest time of the day.

Today's session showed how close the 2007 season promises to be, with a total of 11 drivers covered by seven tenths of a second.

Pole Robert Kubica was again close to the top of the times with the BMW Sauber F1.07 despite completing only 46 laps during the day. Teammate Sebastian Vettel was 11th in the second car from the German squad.

The Ferrari team worked with two F2007 cars for the first time, the second chassis making its debut today in the hands of Luca Badoer, who tested alongside Kimi Raikkonen.

The Italian driver had to replace Felipe Massa at the last minute, after the Brazilian was unable to test as he was feeling unwell.

There were only three red flags during the session, the first caused by Red Bull's Mark Webber, who managed only 27 laps in the team's RB3. Teammate David Coulthard enjoyed a better day, although he finished over a second off de la Rosa's pace.

Toyota's tester Franck Montagny and Wurz caused the other two red flags of the session.

Briton Jenson Button had a productive day of work with the new Honda RA107, covering nearly 100 laps. Button was seventh fastest while test driver Christian Klien finished as slowest on his first day of work with the new car.
F1 teams look to schedule testing at Spa

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, February 6th 2007, 19:21 GMT

Formula One teams will decide this week whether to host a test at Spa-Francorchamps this summer, autosport.com has learned.

Team bosses and Formula One's testing committee are due to finalise discussions about a test at the venue of the Belgian Grand Prix for the second week of July.

The current schedule is for teams to run at Barcelona that week. However, most teams are keen to run at Spa instead, because the circuit has been revised since F1 last raced there in 2005.

Spa-Francorchamps circuit bosses are also understood to be keen to support the test, because it will help promote the return of the Belgian Grand Prix following its absence from last year's schedule.

The track has not yet been homologated by the FIA, but autosport.com understands that this should be a formality and that if the teams agree on the test this week, it will definitely go ahead.

As well as the need to understand circuit revisions, team are anxious to test at the Belgian track due to the unique characteristics of the Eau Rouge corner.

The G-forces that are experienced through the compression at the bottom of the hill have sometimes caused problems for engines and their oil systems, which is why Renault opted to test through that corner back in 2005 following their issues in 2004.

The decision to include Spa in the testing schedule comes with teams keen to get as much running as possible at actual Grand Prix tracks, now that they are allowed to decide among themselves where they run.

Teams will be testing at Bahrain later this month, and they will also run at Sepang just two weeks before the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Toro Rosso news...
Toro Rosso line-up still open

Wednesday, February 7th 2007, 11:42 GMT

American Scott Speed and Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi are likely to stay with Toro Rosso but a deal has still to be agreed, part-owner Gerhard Berger said on Wednesday.

Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso are the only Formula One team with no confirmed drivers for the season starting in Australia on March 18.

"I think our two drivers are in pole position," the Austrian former racer told the official Formula One website. "Most likely we are going this route but it is not done yet."

Berger said the team, who have also yet to unveil their new car, had options.

"Money is not an issue," he said. "We are trying to get the best guys in our cars. We are looking for performance.

"It is the performance that will get a driver a cockpit and not a hand waving a cheque. If our main criteria were money, we would have done this already."

Berger ready to fight Williams, Spyker

By Pablo Elizalde Wednesday, February 7th 2007, 11:18 GMT

Toro Rosso owner Gerhard Berger says his team are ready to fight in the courts if the Williams and Spyker teams pursue legal action against them.

Both Williams and Spyker have not ruled out legal action if Toro Rosso and Super Aguri go ahead with plans to race customer cars in the season-opener in Australia.

Berger, who insists his team are not doing anything against the regulations, is ready to fight his rivals in courts if necessary.

"If they want to do so, fine, then we will fight it out," Berger told the official Formula One website. "But again, we checked our situation very carefully, and we don't see the slightest hint that we are not fulfilling the wording of the regulations.

"We checked very carefully on the legal side, on the FIA side. We have checked very carefully the wording of the Concorde Agreement, and it shows very clearly to us that what we are doing is absolutely correct - that we are inside the regulations.

"We went on a route that even if we wanted we could not go back. It is done."

Berger believes Williams' and Spyker's complaints come from fear that Toro Rosso might beat them in 2007.

"If somebody from the other teams has that impression, that's the nature of competition," the Austrian added.

"But it is not up to them to judge whether what we are doing is right or wrong. I respect their comments, but in our view we are a hundred percent fine.

"It is basically Williams and Spyker who are worried and I know the reason for that - they fear our competitiveness."
So when is STR going to release their car? Will it be last year's RBR2 or this year's RBR3? Same with the Super Aguri, last year's or this year's Honda?
Ferg 02-07-2007 11:38 AM

From what I gather Toro Rosso will be running a modified RB3 while Aguri will run a developed version of Honda's RA106.

So this years Red Bull and last years Honda.

Testing report from Jerez.
Massa leads the way at Jerez

Wednesday, February 7th 2007, 17:05 GMT

Ferrari's Felipe Massa was quickest on the second day of testing at the Jerez circuit, where eight Formula One team are carrying out their programmes this week.

The Brazilian driver, who yesterday was forced to miss the session after feeling unwell, returned to the cockpit of the Ferrari F2007 and emerged on top of the times with a best lap of 1:19.746.

Massa beat teammate Kimi Raikkonen by three tenths of a second after the Finn lost a big part of his day due to a mechanical problem and then poor weather, with rain hitting the track in the afternoon.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was second quickest, with teammate Fernando Alonso, who joined the test today, finishing as fourth fastest behind the BMW Sauber of Robert Kubica.

World champion Alonso did not enjoy a trouble-free day, going off track in the morning with an apparent mechanical problem and then stopping at the end of the straight in the afternoon.

Raikkonen, Red Bull's Mark Webber and Ralf Schumacher in the Toyota caused the remaining red flags of the day, all of them when their cars stopped on track.

The Renault team had their two test drivers again in action at Jerez. Nelsinho Piquet was the faster of the two, outpacing teammate Ricardo Zonta by seven tenths of a second. Zonta got his first taste of the new R27 car yesterday.

Williams drivers Alex Wurz and Nico Rosberg completed their second day of work with the new FW29 unveiled last week. The duo had another productive session, also setting promising times in the Toyota-powered car.

Honda's Jenson Button was joined by IRL driver Marco Andretti, who got his second taste of F1 machinery, testing the new RA107. The American driver managed 74 laps and finished at the bottom of the times.

RBR still a second down, but up 4 tenths on yesterday.

STR really needs to just **** or get off the pot with their drivers.

No kidding. I'm really dissapointed with how they're handling this... The only time I can remember a team being this clumsy about their driver lineup was when Williams pulled that last minute driver announcement a few years ago.

Meanwhile at lonely Silverstone...
Spyker complete Silverstone test

Wednesday, February 7th 2007, 17:11 GMT

The Spyker team completed on Wednesday their two-day shakedown with the new F8-VII at Silverstone circuit.

German Adrian Sutil took over from teammate Christijan Albers, and he completed 134 kilometres in icy weather conditions at the British track.

The team managed 26 laps before Sutil lost control of his car and crashed against the barriers, causing minor damage to the F8-VII.

With temperatures dropping and heavy snow predicted in the evening, the team took the decision to return to the factory and start preparing for next week's test at Barcelona.

"It's been another useful day of testing," said chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. "We solved some minor mechanical issues we had yesterday and now head to Barcelona to continue the programme in warmer temperatures.

"Overall it was a very positive shakedown and a good basis to start from."

Sutil added: "Today was actually very good for a first roll out, and the car was quick. This year's car is definitely better than last year's car and we had no real technical problems. I put in some quick lap times from the start and I could tell the engine was very, very good.

"Of course the end of the day was disappointing; I went on the kerb and touched a strip of damp grass - if you touch it you know you will have problems. It wasn't a big crash, we will repair the car and get out back in time for Barcelona."
The more I look at the Spyker the more I really like the car. I doubt it will be anything but a backmarker, especially as the season progresses, but it's still a very sexy looking machine.

Is the Honda livery going to have a new livery design or are they going to stick with black? I hope they do a black, red, and white livery. That would look awesome. :)
Ferg 02-07-2007 02:05 PM

They'll probably do the same thing they did last year, roll out the final livery a few weeks before the opening race.

Unless Toro Rosso or Aguri go all evil there won't be any black cars this season. :(
