Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 37

subarutah 09-25-2013 11:05 AM
Subarutah, painted engine block and transmission?
yes indeed
Big-Sexy907 09-25-2013 11:23 AM

How did you go about painting the block, spray or brush, and which product did you use?

I was going to paint mine with POR15's engine enamel, brush on .
05subysti 09-25-2013 03:20 PM

Damn Utah engine looks awesome, when you gonna finish that badass project?
subarutah 09-25-2013 03:38 PM

Quick question.. Pulling my engine next month to finish the shave and was curious what you guys used to smooth all the lines out of the bay. I was gonna use bondo since it'll flex alittle. Input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Most weld all the seams and everything up, that reduces the amount of filler, which reduces the chances for cracking.
under0athh51189 09-25-2013 11:06 PM

Hmm. Gotta find a gas welder to use then. I was gonna weld aluminum plates over all the big holes just didn't know what you guys did for the little bolt holes and seams.
erok81 09-25-2013 11:37 PM

I used panel bond and similar thickness sheetmetal cut to slightly bigger shapes and glued on the back. Then evercoat body filler to smooth it out.

I wanted to keep the original bumps and ridges though. Otherwise I probably would have made bigger panels and welded it all.

On a side note I redid my brakes with braided instead of the hard lines. Looks sooo better.

Any pics of the braided lines tucked?

And Utah, why you gonna put it for sale?!! :(

I'm being relocated to a place where I don't want to take the car and I have my first kid on the way in december. I'm gonna sell it and move into a forester

I'm keeping it... I really want pedal box but I don't have enough money for that right now... So maybe next time

erok81 09-30-2013 08:57 PM

Ooooh good timing. I'm trying to figure out how to route my pcv stuff. I ended up with AN fittings on the valve cover like you did. My car has been apart for so long I have no clue where they go. :)
Serkan 09-30-2013 09:06 PM

How do you guys make the AN fittings work on the covers ?

Remove the nipples and tap the hole ?
erok81 09-30-2013 09:26 PM

That's what I did.
erok81 09-30-2013 10:14 PM

Holy hell. How do these stupid PCV valves get routed? I've tried the fsm but can't figure it out. Assume this is without a catch can since I can figure that out myself.

The PCV port. This comes off of the PCV goes to the small manifold port. Then I'm thinking it tees off and one side goes to the TMIC metal pipe thing and the other tee'd hose to the other side of the metal tube. Then the left over port from that same metal tube goes to the intake

The other crank case port just comes up and then gets tee'd into the rear most valve cover ports and don't go the intake.

Is that right? Or does it even make sense?
3mlwhly 09-30-2013 10:56 PM

I thought you they were welded in... That is way easier... Definitely gunna do that one of these days
erok81 09-30-2013 11:42 PM

The valve cover ports? Heck no. Just whip those out with some vice grips, tap with the correct NPT taps, and then a couple NPT to AN fittings. I did 6 and 8. Ended up being slightly smaller than the stock ports.

Looks way better though.

I really wish I had taken the opportunity to do this when my motor was out. I was being cheap. Now I regret it. Maybe next time.
3mlwhly 10-01-2013 01:22 AM

Ya idk why I didn't think of tgqt.. I've done that with other stuff but never put thought to do it there... Stored in memory logs now though
The abs delete is easy. Just get a Brighton non-abs master and relocate your stock dizzy block. Get some 1/8" line and a flaring tool. Re-use your stock m10 fittings and get some nice line clamps to hold them to the body. Takes me about 3-4 hours to do an entire system. D-Moneys setup is sweet but way overkill and over thought. I bet pretty pricy too. My next setup will have an adjustable bias controller and a hydraulic e-brake Ill be posting it in my Forester build thread after I part out the road course parts and buy the new stuff.

My new setup will be super clean. Especially with the radiator in the back... :)

Johann
You sure they are 1/8"? Not arguing, I've just read everywhere else that they're 3/16".
3mlwhly 10-14-2013 09:35 PM

Big-Sexy907 10-15-2013 12:17 PM

How are you guys tying into the rear brakes? I know that there's two lines that go through the firewall on the passenger side that I'm about to remove, but if I place my bias valve in the cowl, how in the heck do I hide the lines?

D bended them backward and put them through the hole in the cowl.
D bended them backward and put them through the hole in the cowl.
I was thinking about doing that or back through the firewall, but the question is how do you get them tied into the rear?
explicithero 10-16-2013 03:15 PM

Manual proportion valve, teed off that and into the hard lines running down the passenger side
erok81 10-16-2013 04:04 PM

I bent mine up into the cowl and it looked like ass.

Then I redid it cutting the lines a bit in front of the passenger seat, flared and tee'd them, then ran a single braided line through the firewall and up into the cowl with bulkhead fittings.
under0athh51189 10-19-2013 11:53 PM

not really an update but a pic of her at the last show. engine will be coming out in nov to finish up the bay

Still in progress :

Abs pump and PS res are relocated in the fender. Battery, washer fluid tank are going to the trunk. Also relocating the fuse box so there won't be anything on the sides.

Brake lines won't be visible. I rerouted the rear lines without going thru the firewall.

Only problem is I have to open a 4" hole for CAI.

Not going to use this bumper beam, restricting too much air flow to the V mount setup. Instead I will make another one with 1.5" aluminum tubing.

Not the cleanest example I know some amazing builds on here, but a lot of work went into it, this is a dedicated race car I own and thought I would post on here as I've enjoyed reading this thread and love the idea of my car being in it. Engine bay was painted with engine in hence the quality but I'm happy with it and no doubt you all know how much effort it would have taken to get it like this. Everything that is painted in the engine bay was done using a rattle can so not bad when all things are considered.
