T, can your alum fab guy weld? I would be getting the seams welded an wel in some plates at the holes you have filled I did my first cars engine bay with fibreglass over the inside of the holes and filler on the engine bay side and it cracked very quickly. If you are spending time to do it while the donk is out do it right mate ;-)

Im just going to sand it all right back to metal.. I dont care if i can see the seams so i will most probaly remove the filler from those areas.
but i will still leave the ally panels as ive already done the drivers side a few months ago and its fine thus far..

I spent countless hours welding all of the holes and welding in plates. I know mine isn't going anywhere and will not crack. I tried to fill everything... It's scary though, as you are going along, you think youre done, then all of the sudden there are holes you missed...

Not Quite, it has never been orange but it was yellow and is now silver. A serious amount of work has gone into that car and has always been pretty tasteful. Its now a fully stripped race car with around 600hp. From Christchurch, New Zealand too not Australia :)

Why are their so many shaved engine bays from Australia/New Zealand? ...I'm not just saying that from the couple of cars posted in here, their are quite a few cars I've seen that are completely shaved and from Australia.

The Australians are huge fans of too much bling so they seem to do a lot of full shaves, not nessessarily nice cars though. The Osmans are reknown for it, a lot of over the top garish show cars but very professional work.
There arent a heap in NZ, Dans is by far the best (best anywhere in my opinion but D moneys is looking pretty well up there too) Ive just done mine too, not a full shave but a deloom, removed all the ugly bits and repainted.

I've only seen 1 from australia, and 1 from new zealand. The yellow to silver one, that car is a gc8 so not a gdb body style and that's from new zealand. Well this is my take 2 attempt this time done properly as we dont want any cracking. Full metal plates are going to be welded in. All holes will have plates so there shouldnt be any holes along the firewall.
Should be hopefully done in a couple of weeks..

looks good tino, exactly what the body shop did with mine. Welding the big plates in on the side is ideal! What are you doing to do with all the recessed holes on the shock towers and fire wall? Are you going to make everything smooth like mine?
| tino | 11-03-2009 06:43 PM |
D were going to be using minimal bog if any at all as I fear cracking in the longer term. The recessed strut towers were orignally going to be plated also but I think my strut brace won't fit for one and second the nuts will be pressing in onto the plate. This could affect how well the struts are secured imo. So were just seam welding them, won't be mirror smooth but my strut bar covers it all up.
As for the firewall we were going to weld plates over all the holes as none of them are being used. It won't be flush like the sides but you won't see most of it anyway. Or thinking of welded a plate over the firewall so that it will be smooth. I'll have a chat to them today about that.
Btw did u put a skim of filler over everything to make it all smooth?

Tino, I wasn't talking about the shock towers where the strut bar bolts to. I smoothed mine out a tad, but also feared it cracking so only a little bit was done.
I was talking about the recessed holes on the fender wheels and the sides of the shock tower. You know where the fuse box mounted, holes for abs wires, brake proportioning valve, boost selonoid, etc.
Mine were all welded with metal and then smoohted out with high grade bondo. You're never going to get it smooth without body work and you can't just paint overtop of your metal work as it would be all wavy and show every single imperfection.
Also, what holes are you shaving on your fire wall? I only did the top cowl on mine. A year later after mine has been done I wish I knew what I did now, then. :( I would have shaved the heater core plugs, a/c plugs, two holes near the pitch stop, and the main harness hole. If you're really serious about making a false firewall, i've seen it done but OMG is that alot of work. My dad has it done on his hot rod and it looks INSANE! But then you need a tilton pedal assembly, all new lines, prop valve, resoviors etc which will run you about $5,000.

Uh okay. I think we ate going to smooth them out a little, weld over the holes along the side at this stage. Yes there going to flush it with sone sort of polymer before painting the primer I think but that will be all the filler used really.
As for the firewall every hole will have a plate welded and smoothed out except for the heater core and fuel lines which I will still keep. But everything else will be rerouted along the fender well.
I'm keeping the booster and just painting it blue so it blends in. I am also getting a custom aluminum resivior made up for the brake and clutch fluids and getting rid of the plastic ones.
I think a false panel may work but it's not as if you can really see the firewall in any case so I may just plate the holes for now. Should still look good

Sick, sounds good. I also painted my brake booster, against everyone elses's opinion and it turned out awesome. I bought new plastic resoviors, project mu brake and clutch caps, and powdercoated my master cylinders so they turned out pretty well, however i'd be interested to see your custom ones made!
Can't wait to see it finished! I really really really think you need to take the timing belt covers off and have them painted. No sense in having this sick ass engine bay and beat up parts on your motor. lol I know you got it in you tino!

I've already got the clutch resivior made up. I'll post it in my thread. As for the can covers. There is just not enough time I think to get them painted. I want the car running plus all the belts ect are all installed onto the motor. You won't even see the front or side of the engine where the cam covers are due to the vmount and carbon shroud. I'd rather carbon it than paint it though. Haha

I did want to seam weld it but havent really learned to weld thin plate like that that well yet (I do everything myself because shops allways f$#k stuff up for me and charge the earth) and wanted to get it all back together so I could get it going.
May still rip the motor out again later and seam weld if the chassis moves too much on the track. I figure in an accident tho Ill end up bending more than the car if its all welded up and that might not be a good thing.

Heres some more pics from the engine bay shave..
A very thin layer of filler is going over the welded plates then will be sanded back to make sure its nice and flat and smooth. Everything has either been plated or seam welded
Then a special primer will go on hopefully tomorrow some time. More pics when that happens.
I was told that there were around 90 holes which had to be welded or plated. The whole inside of the dash including the air conditioner boxes had to come out to make sure that it didnt catch fire from the sparks.

A very thin layer of filler is going over the welded plates then will be sanded back to make sure its nice and flat and smooth. Everything has either been plated or seam welded
Then a special primer will go on hopefully tomorrow some time. More pics when that happens.

its a great look, but imo over here in the UK, you would be laughed out the garage if you asked for that to be done and they would bend you over each time you walked in for a progress. Plus it would take them forever to do, I've heard of cars sitting in garages for months just to get a kit fitted and painted! unless you owned the garage it would be fine
Keep up the progress and good luck. Get your dash flocked while its out ;0)

Ricey the only reason why ive done this is beacuse the engine is out and theres not much down time. I think it will look great with the hidden loom. Like a race car, euro styles..
They have only been on it for one week and it should be ready next week. Thats when you know youve got the right people doing the job for you...Professionals
Have a look at my thread, flocked dash is so yesterday... ull be pleasantly suprised..

Tino, that's a perfect job. That's exactly how mine looked in the begining stages so they're doing it right. Can't wait to see it finished because you shaved 3 extra holes on the firewall that I forgot. :(
I'm curious, how much did that cost you over there? I know what it cost here in the US, and it would be humorous to compare. lol
Where are you going to put your tanks at now that it's all shaved?

Tino!!! I love the tanks too, but you can't put them back in the same spots! That's the whole point of the shaved/tucked bay, to make the motor look bare and like it's floating. No tanks on those beautiful smoothed fender wells, or else im coming to Austrailia to kick your ass!

Haha D. Nah those tanks are staying they cost me an absolute fortune plus they look unreal. Those tanks give that floating look and I think it won't detract from the engine bay.

Update 07/11/2009 Part 2:
Went to see the progress of the engine bay. There has been a very light coat of primer put on to see if there is any high point blemishes ect that need to be sanded down. Dan and Manni have done an absolute magic job so far and have done it in a organised and professional manner.
The bay should be painted mid week and then left for a few days for the paint to settle then sanded back and another clear coat put on for that glass coat finish. In the meantime the custom hardlines for the ABS and fuel system will be done.

Tino, it looks good man! Couple questions...
Are they going to smooth down the holes the filled on the top wiper cowl where the wiper control wires go through? They look a little rough in the pics. Also, in the fender well areas where it goes from the rounded part to the flat part, it also looks a little wavy. That will all need to be fixed otherwise when you paint it, it will be bumpy and you will see everything. I just think if they smooth it out a little more it would be less of a transition from the fender well to the flat parts in the front of the bay.
I'm sure you saw these pics, but here was mine in primer:

and after paint:

hEy d this was only a rough primer coat so I could see the rough shape of it all. So they can proceed with painting it without me needing to come down until it's in paint.
There going to be sanding smoothing etc all the rough points in the bay then putting a special polymer over it all prepping it and then painting it,.

Ok, that's good! I was just making sure you were aware before it went for paint.
