Anyone know of a good place to buy F1 shirts? I really want to add to my collection (of one USGP shirt), but I really don't like a lot of the "team merchandise" shirts. They're all really gaudy and, well, geeky. I just want a simple T-shirt!

Honda confirmed this morning that the above pictures are their new livery.

Each sponsor (except for Bridgestone) will be given only pixel sized ads on the car and will only be visible with a microscope. The brands and their environmental awareness will be showcased on the website posted on the wing (myearthdream.com).

I love the concept. But, man, the livery looks pretty bad IMO.

I'm not sure how 'a pixel sized ads' on the side of the car is going to work- or why sponsors would want to pay big money to only have thier spots visible with a microscope  - but I still like the livery (and 1/4 of the car is black ;))
John__Gotti 02-26-2007 11:06 AM

Different, I'll give it that. I just want to see who the sponsor's are as the site isn't up till tomorrow. Well if nothing else it will be a nice colourful grid this year. Really looking forward to Melbourne now.
Honda launch green campaign and livery

By Jonathan Noble Monday, February 26th 2007, 08:30 GMT

Honda Racing have issued a rallying call to Formula One fans and sponsors to join their new campaign to help address the climate crisis.

The team unveil today their new 2007 colour scheme, which features an image of the earth instead of the traditional advertising and sponsor logos.

But Honda are taking the initiative a step further, revealing a unique scheme to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing the world.

Through a new website myearthdream.com, those interested in helping support Honda's push will be able to make a donation to environmental charity, pledge to make a lifestyle change, and in return have their name featured on the car.

Two global brands, Universal Music and Gatorade, are the first to sign up to the concept, while other companies - including Fila, IBM, Instron, Oliver Sweeney, Perkin Elmer, Showa Denko, TUV and GF Agie Charmilles - have also joined up.

"Climate change is probably the single biggest issue facing the global community and F1 is not immune from it," team boss Nick Fry said.

"On the contrary, we believe that F1 with its huge global profile and cutting edge technology can play an important role in not only highlighting the issues but also playing our part in developing solutions.

"In addition, the FIA recognises the opportunity for F1 to showcase innovative technologies for the benefit of society for the long term. For example, by 2009, devices for energy recovery will be in place on the cars.

"So we at Honda F1 are proud to dedicate our car to the environmental challenge. We believe that practical solutions can stem directly from engineers working on our F1 programme."

Fry added that he hoped Honda's plans for 2007 would not oly raise awareness of global issues but also encourage the public to do more to help the situation.

"First and foremost, we are a race team and F1 is very much a team sport. We achieve our racing objectives only by working together, and parallels can be drawn with the way that we must all join together to address the environmental challenge.

"We hope that in raising awareness and highlighting the issues we will encourage members of the public to come together and help take on the challenge of climate change."

Honda Racing chairman Yasuhiro Wada added: "Honda constantly strives to be innovative in both its technology and its thinking and to sincerely respond to the demands of customers and society.

"Honda has always made great efforts to contribute to the preservation of the environment in its corporate activity.

"We hope this new initiative for Honda in F1 will help to further stimulate awareness and interest across the world for these important environmental issues."
For now, they'll pay because its a new concept. They'll pay cause we'll talk and post about it. Every article will talk about how global brands, like Universal Music and Gatorade, have joined as sponsors and have taken the pledge to make a corporate lifestyle change to be more 'green'. Its simply good press, and the concept will make sure that it'll get talked about. If every team on the grid took that approach, though, I imagine that the sponsors would have quite a different view. This will only work as an advertising mechanism because it is unique.

I like the concept, not a fan of the execution. It looks okay from the side because you can make out the globe but the rest of it does nothing for me. It is cool to see that Honda is strong enough to convice all their sponsors/partners to join in.
From what I read about this commitment issue that Speed has, it seems like Speed wants out of STR. I think he knows that with STR, he will remain with the backmarkers and he wants to find a way to a better team. Granted he's not great and I don't know of any team that will pick him up, but I guess I can't blame Speed for not wanting to commit "long term" to STR.

This is of course, only my assumption. :D
Blah, if he shows a little more talent he wouldn't have to worry about it. You don't even have to win, just be a bit fast, and people would fight to break your contract, like mister Jensen Button.

Back to the testing grind...
Ferrari duo back on top in Bahrain

Tuesday, February 27th 2007, 14:14 GMT

The Ferrari team fired another warning shot ahead of the start of the 2007 season, with Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen topping the times on the first day of this week's test at Bahrain.

Brazilian Massa was also the busiest man today, covering a total of 102 laps to finish over three tenths of a second ahead of teammate Raikkonen.

The Finn was testing a new aerodynamic package which will be tried by Massa tomorrow.

Massa was nearly six tenths quicker than world champion Fernando Alonso, third fastest in the McLaren. Alonso's teammate Lewis Hamilton was fifth quickest, the Briton causing one of the red flags of the day when he stopped on track with the MP4-22.

BMW-Sauber continued to show impressive pace, with Robert Kubica finishing as fourth quickest, albeit nearly a whole second behind Massa. Kubica's day, however, was not without trouble, the Pole stopping twice on track with apparent mechanical problems.

The day was marked by Heikki Kovalainen's big accident. The Renault driver, who was uninjured in the crash, managed only 19 laps before he lost control of his car and smashed heavily against the barriers, forcing him to stop testing as his team tried to repair the damage.

His teammate Giancarlo Fisichella enjoyed a much more productive day, covering 82 laps despite being hindered by gearbox problems.

Frenchman Franck Montagny took to the track to replace Toyota teammate Ralf Schumacher, who covered just 36 laps before he hurt his back when he spun his car over the kerbs. Schumacher is expected to return to work for tomorrow's session.

Honda's Christian Klien and James Rossiter were the men in charge of testing duties for the Japanese squad, the Austrian driver trying some new aerodynamic components fitted to the RA107.

Klien, running with Bridgestone's harder compound, finished as 11th fastest. Rossiter, still learning the track, was 14th.

David Coulthard and Mark Webber were still far from the top of times with Red Bull's RB3, the Scot also causing the final red flag of the day when he stopped with problems.

Super Aguri were the only team not running this year's car, with Takuma Sato still at the wheel of the interim machine. The Japanese finished ahead of American Scott Speed, slowest in the new Toro Rosso.

The Bahrain test is the final one before the start of the season in Australia.
Kovalainen crashes heavily in Bahrain

Tuesday, February 27th 2007, 10:14 GMT

Renault's Heikki Kovalainen escaped injury after a massive crash during the first day of this week's testing at the Sakhir circuit.

The Finn, back in action in Bahrain after two days of rest following last week's test, lost control of his car at turn seven, going off the track at high speed and smashing against the barriers.

The car's right side was completely destroyed, but Kovalainen was able to climb out of the car on his own.

It is believed the Renault driver lost control of his car after being caught out by the strong wind.

The team said Kovalainen, who has replaced Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso in the Renault line-up alongside Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, would not be testing again on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Williams and Spyker at Barcelona...
Williams, Spyker begin Barcelona test

Tuesday, February 27th 2007, 18:51 GMT

Williams and Spyker began on Tuesday their final test of the pre-season, working at the Barcelona circuit in Spain.

Both squads are testing at the Spanish track after deciding to skip the Bahrain test, where the rest of the teams are testing.

German Nico Rosberg posted the fastest time of the day with the Williams FW29, finishing well ahead of teammate Alexander Wurz.

"Nico tested the Melbourne aero upgrade today and then spent the rest of the session carrying out long runs," explained test team manager Dickie Stanford. "He completed a full race distance, together with pitstops and refuelling.

"Alex, meanwhile, worked on mapping and set-up tests."

Spyker, meanwhile, had four drivers on track. Christijan Albers led teammate Adrian Sutil and test drivers Fairuz Fauzy and Giedo van der Garde, the Dutchman managing only four laps.

"A very useful first day of testing, continuing on from the work we did in Valencia," said technical chief Mike Gascoyne. "In the morning Christijan and Adrian completed their alloted programme of set-up work and performance evaluation.

"Both were pleased with the balance and grip of the car, which was noticeably better this time out in Barcelona.

"Giedo van der Garde and Fairuz Fauzy took over in the afternoon and while Fairuz did a full race simulation without problems, Giedo's mileage was limited following a precautionary engine change early on.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the mechanics, he could only complete installation checks. Tomorrow Christijan and Adrian will do a full day's testing, running through a continuation of today's programme."

Today's times:

Alesi to stock cars?
Former grand prix winner Jean Alesi is to return to racing in a new stock car championship based in Asia and the Middle East.

The 42-year-old Frenchman, who has raced in the German DTM touring car series since 2002, is the first star name to sign up to the new Speedcar Series which will see 24 drivers compete in identical 600bhp cars over 18 races.

Alesi thrilled F1 fans with his swashbuckling style in a career which spanned over 200 grands prix with six different teams and he says he is now looking forward to sampling a new type of racing for the first time.

I cannot wait to make my debut in the Speedcar Series, he said.

I have driven many different types of cars from all across the world, including F1, DTM, sports cars, touring cars, rally cars and ice racers; however, stock cars are the only type of racer that I still want to try.

I am truly excited to be involved in this innovative new championship right from the start.

This is a fantastic opportunity, and I am really pleased to work with an excellent group of people to make the series grow, and challenge for the title.

I am looking forward to driving the car at the first testing session, held at VIR Race Track, USA, on March 5 and 6."

The inaugural race will take place in November and the new championship acts as another example of the growing expansion of motorsport in Asia and the Middle East.

"It seems that motorsport is really becoming a reality in Asia and the Middle East, and I would like to think this is due to the popularity of Formula 1, said F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

The new Speedcar Series will consequently add even more interest."
He's gonna be at VIR.
Massa stays on top in Bahrain

Wednesday, February 28th 2007, 14:20 GMT

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa continued with his dominant form in testing at the Sakhir circuit by posting the fastest time for the second day running.

Massa, who caused the final red flag of the day when he stopped on track with 20 minutes remaining, covered a total of 100 laps on his way to the top of the timesheet, the Brazilian finishing over half a second quicker than his nearest rival, Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren.

Massa was testing the new aero package tried for the first time by teammate Kimi Raikkonen yesterday. The Finn was third quickest on another strong day for Ferrari.

Hamilton, hindered by a hydraulic problem in the morning, covered 55 laps in the Mercedes-powered MP4-22, while teammate Pedro de la Rosa completed 52 and was fifth fastest.

World champion Fernando Alonso did not test today, and instead watched the action from the pitwall.

Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella was the busiest driver with 109 laps covered, as his team tried to make up for the lost time following Heikki Kovalainen's crash yesterday.

The Finn returned to action in the afternoon following yesterday's high-speed accident, which forced Renault's mechanics to work overnight to have the car ready for today.

Kovalainen was back on track around 2pm and managed 30 laps, although he had to drive the car fitted with an old bodywork after destroying the one the team planned to use in Australia.

BMW Sauber continued to suffer reliability problems with their F1.07, with Robert Kubica again stopping twice with mechanical problems.

The remaining red flags of the day were caused by Scot David Coulthard, who lost a fuel flap while on track, Toyota's Jarno Trulli, Honda's Jenson Button and de la Rosa, whose car came to a stop late in the day.

Trulli's teammate Ralf Schumacher was back behind the wheel after having to skip half of yesterday's session following a spin in which he hurt his back.

Tomorrow's session is the final day of testing before the season kicks off in Australia.
Looks like I'm the only one who likes the new Honda livery! :o Similar to McLaren I guess, seemed like most people didn't like the mirrormobile.
You and me are the only ones. There may be others that like the new Honda (and the chrome McLaren) but they're laying low. I have to say though that part of their appeal is their uniqueness. If all the cars had photos wrapped over them and/or chrome coloring I think even my eyes might start bleeding.

I think I like the new Honda. I certainly looks amazing under the spot lights. I'm holding out until I see it in context on the starting grid. Either it'll still look amazing or it'll look like total ass. My only gripe about is that there needs to be some stars or something to fill up the black bit.

I applaud the concept though, very brave of Honda and their sponsors. :D

Yeah, I have been unsure on the design since the launch earlier this week, but its really growing on me. I have one of the pics as my background at work now :D

Plus, I put my name on it, so I've got to like in now :p
Rosberg fastest again at Barcelona

Wednesday, February 28th 2007, 18:53 GMT

Williams' Nico Rosberg set the pace for the second day running in testing at the Barcelona circuit, where the British squad and Spyker are carrying out their final preparations for the start of the season.

Rosberg, at the wheel of the Toyota-powered FW29, finished ahead of teammate Alex Wurz as he focused on mapping and set-up work. Wurz spent the day doing long runs and completed a race distance.

Meanwhile, the Spyker team worked with their two racing drivers Christijan Albers and Adrian Sutil, the Dutchman's day being hindered by a hydraulic leak that cut his running short.

"We had a reasonably productive day, working on the basic set-up and building up speed over a race distance," said chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. "Adrian had no issues during the day, however Christijan's car developed a hydraulic leak that cut his race run short.

"It's not a major issue though and we should be back out tomorrow. This morning was a bit cooler and we had some problems trying to get the tyres to work, but we've got a handle on how to better the situation."

Today's times:

Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Rosberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1:21.231 102

Well, the majority of the stuff in low orbit is our trash, so it may not go well with thier theme, kind of like how they made all the deserts green

Nice comparison. At first I was thinking "Wow, Williams faster then Spyker, not really surprising"

But, with the other comparison, it looks like the Williams boys are right up there with the top times.
