Valencia testing...
Williams, Spyker kick off Valencia test

Monday, February 19th 2007, 16:45 GMT

The Williams and Spyker teams kicked off on Monday one of their final tests ahead of the start of the 2007 season, working at the Valencia circuit.

While the rest of the teams travel to Bahrain for this week's test at the Sakhir circuit, both Williams and Spyker will carry out their programmes at the Spanish track.

The British squad set the pace on the opening day of work, with test driver Kazuki Nakajima finishing on top of the times with a best time of 1:12.953.

The young Japanese driver, who caused the only red flag of the day when he went off at the first corner, outpaced racing driver Alex Wurz.

Spyker's test drivers Giedo van der Garde and Adrian Valles made their debut at the wheel of the new F8-VII car, the Dutchman finishing as quickest, ahead of teammate Adrian Sutil.

Spaniard Valles was the slowest of the three after 49 laps.

Both teams will continued testing at Valencia tomorrow.

Today's times:

Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Nakajima Williams-Toyota (B) 1:12.953 113
2. Wurz Williams-Toyota (B) 1:13.039 54
3. van der Garde Spyker-Ferrari (B) 1:14.639 81
4. Sutil Spyker-Ferrari (B) 1:15.380 34
5. Valles Spyker-Ferrari (B) 1:15.637 49

JV is a tool. He was only fast before he became World Champion, when he wasn't a prima donna and the team could set the car up according to their specifications. After he won, he thought he was smarter than he was, and demanded the car be set car up to his liking, which always made it slower. It is no surprise that every time a team replaces him, they get better results.

This year will be good. With new drivers in most of the teams, it will be up for grabs.

Second day at Valencia
Williams again on top at Valencia

Tuesday, February 20th 2007, 16:39 GMT
Alexander Wurz finished on top of the times for the second day running at the Valencia circuit, where Williams and Spyker are testing this week.

Wurz's best time of 1:11.614, achieved in the morning, was over three tenths of a second quicker than teammate Nico Rosberg, who took over from test driver Kazuki Nakajima at the wheel of the second FW29.

Christijan Albers also began working today after skipping the first day of testing, the Dutchman leading the Spyker trio ahead of the teammate Adrian Sutil and test driver Fairuz Fauzy.

The Malaysian was making his Formula One debut after being announced as part of Spyker's line-up earlier this year. The fastest Spyker, however, was nearly two seconds off Wurz' pace.

There were no red flags during the day.

Both teams continue at Valencia tomorrow.

Today's times:

Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Wurz Williams-Toyota (B) 1.11.614 85
2. Rosberg Williams-Toyota (B) 1.11.893 90
3. Albers Spyker-Ferrari (B) 1.13.504 33
4. Sutil Spyker-Ferrari (B) 1.13.678 128

Honda putting some spin...
Honda play down testing performance

Tuesday, February 20th 2007, 17:41 GMT

Honda Racing insist they have no worries about their testing performances so far, and in fact claim they are confident in how their preparations are going for the new season.

The Japanese squad have failed to shine during winter testing. They have finished off their rivals' pace in most tests with their new RA107 car and have not shown the kind of impressive laps that teams like Ferrari, McLaren and BMW have demonstrated.

Honda, however, believe the testing times are not representative of the real situation, and they reckon they are in better shape than it looks. This comes despite suggestions that the new car lacks balance.

Engineering director Jacky Eeckelaert told Autosport that he believes the testing times do not tell the true story of where Honda stand, and he reckons they are ahead of world champions Renault at the moment.

"The testing times are a little misleading," he said. "Looking at the long runs of some of our rivals, sometimes they are a second faster than us and sometimes a second slower.

"The weather means we've not put in any strong single-lap runs, but we're confident in what we're doing. We're not as quick as McLaren, Ferrari or BMW, but we think we're ahead of Renault."

The team will be introducing their definitive Melbourne-specification aero package at the second test in Bahrain next week, which should provide some indication of just how competitive they will be at the start of the season.

Until now the team have used an interim aero spec based around the 2006 front and rear wings.
I know they're lying out of their ass, but I hope this is a good year for the Honda boys.

Newey wants him to try an Arai helmet rather then his regular Schubreth(sp?) to see if it helps with the aero. It's not determined yet if he'll which back, used to wear an Arai when he was at Minardi and the 1st year at Jaguar.

I find it a strange request since Coulthard wears an Arai already so it seems it would be easy to compare the two side-by-side. Either way he will have the paint job by the start of the season.
Webber still not comfortable inside RB3

Wednesday, February 21st 2007, 14:20 GMT

Australian Mark Webber says he is still not fully comfortable inside Red Bull Racing's new RB3, less than a month ahead of the start of the season.

The Red Bull driver suffered from bruises during his first test with the new car and was hoping a new seat would make his life easier inside the car.

Webber says the changes have improved the situation, but he admits there is still work to do before he is 100 percent comfortable.

"I would definitely like to be more comfortable," the Australian told Fox Sports. "I would not have liked to race the way the seat was. It seems a lot better now. We've done a new seat and flattened things to get me into the car better.

"We're trying to get me comfortable. The car is pretty tight in places."

Webber will return to action on Thursday for the first of six days of testing in Bahrain, where the team are hoping to make a step forward before the start of the season.

Red Bull plan to introduce new aero bits for the test, but Webber says they might not be ready in time.

"Maybe we can get something for the end of Bahrain, but it will be private jet material. There is quite a lot to fabricate," he said.

With Red Bull not having shown the same sort of consistent performance of some of their rivals, the Australian driver admits there are still things to improve in Adrian Newey's car.

"Adrian is very fussy. He says we've got to improve it a bit. Both David (Coulthard) and I had a bit to say when we first drove the car. The changes came from the driver feedback and Adrian looking at the car out on the track.

"I did the first big test and we had a chat about the car. You get a fairly good impression pretty quickly. So off we went to investigate a few things."

Red Bull drivers turn to acting

Wednesday, February 21st 2007, 13:03 GMT

Red Bull drivers will star in a movie produced by the Austrian company, which will be distributed at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

It will be the second year that Red Bull has produced a pre-season movie, known within the company as "The Mood Film".

The film features Red Bull Racing drivers David Coulthard and Mark Webber in a scrap with Toro Rosso duo Scott Speed and Tonio Liuzzi.

To film this production, Coulthard and Webber were sent off to the Czech Republic, while Speed and Liuzzi filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The movie will be distributed to TV companies in Melbourne at the time of the Australian Grand Prix, and it will also be playing during the GP weekend in Red Bull's Energy Station.

Wednesday, February 21st 2007, 16:27 GMT

The Williams and Spyker teams wrapped up on Wednesday their three-day test at the Valencia circuit in Spain.

While the rest of the teams getting ready to start working in Bahrain tomorrow, Williams and Spyker completed their programme at the Spanish track, where Nico Rosberg finished on top of the times with his Toyota-powered FW29.

Both teams were forced to run with wet weather tyres until mid-morning due to some overnight showers. The rest of the day's work took place on a dry track.

Rosberg was joined by the team's test driver Narain Karthikeyan, who took over from Austrian Alex Wurz at the wheel of the second Williams.

Adrian Sutil and Dutch teammate Christijan Albers were in charge of testing duties for Spyker.

German Sutil caused the only red flag of the day when smoke started coming out from his brake discs, before all the car's wheels caught fire and needed to be extinguished by the track marshals.

Today's times:

Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen topped the timesheets on the first day of testing at Bahrain on Thursday.

The Ferrari pair were separated by less than two tenths of a second, although Massa completed nearly double the amount of laps of his new teammate.

Jenson Button was an encouraging third quickest for Honda, although he did lose time in the morning when his car stopped on track with throttle problems.

Lewis Hamilton followed his countryman with the fourth quickest time, while Button's teammate Rubens Barrichello was fifth quickest with his best time from the morning session.

Pedro de la Rosa was next up for McLaren, while Sebastian Vettel was the first of the BMW drivers with the seventh best lap.

Jarno Trulli was eighth quickest for Toyota ahead of Nick Heidfeld, who stopped on track in the morning. However, the German was unsure of the cause of his problem.

Anthony Davidson was 10th fastest for Super Aguri, while Heikki Kovalainen was the top Renault driver after he completed the most laps of anyone during the day and set the 11th best time.
Berger questions Speed's 'commitment' PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 22 February 2007
Feb.22 (GMM) Team co-owner Gerhard Berger has questioned Scott Speed's "commitment" to being a grand prix driver as confirmation of the second Toro Rosso race seat still lags. Austrian Berger, himself a former ten time winner in formula one, has stated that the 24-year-old is in "pole position" for the ride despite unspecified contractual issues that prevented his confirmation alongside Vitantonio Liuzzi at the recent launch of the new car. Berger now tells Motorsport Aktuell magazine: "In the past weeks Tonio convinced us that he brings along the necessary commitment to complement his talent. "The same is not yet true for Scott." Speed is almost certain to ultimately land the job, with rumours suggesting that the hold-up is about Toro Rosso trying to get his signature on a longer contract than he would like. It has also been suggested that Berger, after observing that STR's 2006 lineup attended too many parties, is trying to give Speed the impression that his seat in formula one is a privilege reserved only for the truly focused. Speed touched down in Bahrain this week for what would be his only pre-season test before Melbourne.
From what I read about this commitment issue that Speed has, it seems like Speed wants out of STR. I think he knows that with STR, he will remain with the backmarkers and he wants to find a way to a better team. Granted he's not great and I don't know of any team that will pick him up, but I guess I can't blame Speed for not wanting to commit "long term" to STR.

This is of course, only my assumption. :D

I was flipping through the latest issue of Sports Illustrated at Border's during my lunch break...

They had a big write up on the 2007 NASCAR season (Dale Jr and JPM are on the cover) and an article about Montoya.

There were a couple of things that really bothered me.

First off they kept calling it "F/1"... I mean honestly, that's not even close!

They also made a few references to grand prix cars still having two-way telemetry..something along the lines of "the cars are so smart all it takes is a few strokes of a keyboard to adjust things during a race..." or whatever. Nice to see they picked a writer up to speed with the sport.

They mistakenly stated that Williams was running BMW engines in 1998 and 1999 (they were customer Renaults badged as Supertec and sold by Flav for those keeping score) and that Chip Ganassi was testing his CART chassis at Barcelona when he "spotted" Montoya testing for Williams.
Heidfeld sets impressive pace in Bahrain

Friday, February 23rd 2007, 14:10 GMT

Nick Heidfeld led the way for BMW on the second day of testing at Bahrain on Friday - continuing to show just how competitive his team are likely to be in 2007 by finishing nearly eight tenths of a second ahead of his closest rival.

With much warmer temperatures greeting the teams for the second day of this week's test, Heidfeld set his best lap of 1:30.469 in the cooler morning - as track temperatures topped 40 degrees centigrade by the afternoon.

World champion Fernando Alonso was second for McLaren, and he and fourth fastest teammate Lewis Hamilton conducted long runs to try and dial their MP4-22 into the right settings for the season opening Australian Grand Prix.

Jenson Button proved that yesterday's much stronger showing from Honda Racing was not a flash in the pan as he set the third quickest time - although was 1.4 seconds adrift of Heidfeld.

Robert Kubica was fifth fastest, just a few hundredths of a second ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, whose long run pace looked the most impressive during the day.

Renault's test driver Nelson Piquet Jr. was seventh quickest, ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Honda's Rubens Barrichello.

More to follow.

For comparison last year's pole lap was a 1,31.431 by Schumacher and the fastest race lap was a 1,32.408 by Rosberg.

So much for the slower spec tires.

Good thing Ralfy is proving his ability to be awesome for that 25 mil he's making.
I'm not expecting much from Red Bull anymore, I think its going to take a development version of the car to do well at all.

Day three at Sakhir..
McLaren duo set the pace in Bahrain

By Biranit Goren Saturday, February 24th 2007, 14:27 GMT
World champion Fernando Alonso led McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton at the top of the timesheet on the third day of preseason testing in Bahrain.

The Spaniard set a time of 1:30.994, just one tenth of a second faster than Hamilton, with the Ferrari pair of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen a further seven tenths behind.

The Brazilian and Finnish drivers carried out long run tests for Ferrari's 056 engine, the team stating they covered more than double a race weekend distance - which also included a Grand Prix simulation with pitstops, various set-up changes and a comparison of various mechanical components.

Today's test session was held under partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures at the Sakhir track, with all teams but Williams and Spyker taking part in the running.

The day began with Toro Rosso's Scott Speed bringing the session to a stop as he spun off an hour into the running, but he avoided damage to his car and was later able to continue, finishing the day last on the timesheet.

Toyota's Jarno Trulli, who ended only just ahead of Speed, brought out the second red flag at noon, when his car stopped on track, followed shortly after by Raikkonen, who suffered a gearbox failure.

Commenting on his day, Trulli said: "The positive thing from today was that we did a lot of miles, almost twice a race distance, and this should be very helpful to us.

"Unfortunately my lap times were not that good but that was more because we were concentrating on long runs rather than qualifying simulations.

"It has been a reasonable day and the laps I did helped us evaluate several things on the car, including our new aero package."

After lunch, Alonso too had to stop on track, with oil dripping from the floor of his MP4-22. Hamilton also stopped on track an hour later with an engine failure.

At the end of the day, Alonso commented: "It has been interesting to get the MP4-22 on track in the consistent weather conditions of Bahrain.

"We have been able to get a fuller understanding of the car and how it works in the warmer temperatures, including looking at areas such as the cooling system, which has been productive.

"It was a chance for me to see the latest performance upgrades, and we have useful feedback from the developments that have been incorporated.

"It was great to see some of the work that has been done on the test track and at the McLaren Technology Centre on the car, as we progress towards Australia.

"We have another three days next week in Bahrain and have to make the most of that time. There is, as always in Formula One, still work to do."

The technical gremlins also affected BMW Sauber, with Nick Heidfeld's engine blowing after lunchtime, while teammate Robert Kubica's car had an oil line problem that resulted in an engine change.

Nevertheless, the Polish driver was able to complete his programme, testing various damper settings and new aero parts, which the team said had brought positive results. Heidfeld and Kubica finished the day as 10th and 11th fastest respectively.

Honda's Jenson Button, seventh overall, also saw an engine change, as did Red Bull's David Coulthard, who also had his gearbox changed in the RB3. Coulthard was eighth fastest, with teammate Mark Webber only 14th.

Button's teammate Rubens Barrichello had a productive day, running the most laps of all drivers with a total of 129, and setting the sixth fastest time.

Super Aguri's Anthony Davidson was also showing consistency, accumulating a total of 126 trouble-free laps in the interim car.

Also running over a hundred laps were test drivers Nelson Piquet Jr for Renault and Franck Montagny for Toyota. Both finished ninth and 13th fastest, respectively.

Dieter Gass, Toyota's chief engineer, stated at the end of the day: "We wrapped up the first part of the Bahrain test in a positive way, putting a lot of miles on both cars without major problems.

"We had a planned engine and gearbox change over lunchtime on Franck's car. That took a bit more time than we expected but nevertheless he completed the programme as planned which was good.

"Jarno also went through our programme and found some interesting bits in terms of the set-up. We will now have to analyse the work we have done this week and focus a little bit more on performance during the next test."

Toyota, however, faced a unique problem at the start of the day: the Japanese team ran out of fire extinguishers yesterday, having emptied all three on hand. Nevertheless, new ones were flown into the Middle Eastern track overnight.

Testing at Bahrain continues next week.

And something about an American guy keeping his drive.
Speed set for Toro Rosso confirmation

By Jonathan Noble Saturday, February 24th 2007, 08:20 GMT

Scott Speed's stand-off with the Scuderia Toro Rosso team appears to be at an end with the American due to have his 2007 seat confirmed imminently, autosport.com can reveal.

Toro Rosso have been reluctant to confirm Speed's contract for 2007 so far amid question marks about his commitment to being a Formula One driver.

Speed began testing of the teams new STR2 in Bahrain this morning, however, with sources close to the driver saying that he and the team have now agreed to continue the relationship. It is not known when an official announcement will be made, but it could come as early as this weekend.

Although Toro Rosso said at the launch of their STR2 that contractual issues were behind the delay in Speeds confirmation, team owner Gerhard Berger told autosport.com earlier this week that the reasons were based on doubts about how hungry Speed was for the job.

"I have to say Scott is still on pole position," said Berger, when asked about his future driver line-up. "I believe that with his natural talent he can do a reasonable job. But he is not at a talent stage where he doesn't need to work.

"He needs also to bring a commitment. If he has this, and he shows this, no problem. I think we will be very happy with the two guys."

Berger said the problems first originated when the team began some post-season analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of their drivers - something Speed did not take too kindly too.

"After the season we said 'OK, let's first analyse very carefully the season, all the races, all the tests, everything. And then let's see together with the drivers and make a plan, how to improve their weaknesses.'

"And obviously this plan you have to do together with the driver, because you need a great commitment from him, first to understand the problems, and then to be able to sort it out. Tonio did very well; he reacted very constructively and worked on himself.

"I think we'll see a different Tonio this year compared with last year. Both drivers are quite OK with natural talent, but obviously it's not everything in F1, you need a helluva commitment. I think we ask our drivers to put a similar commitment into the game as all the mechanics, all the engineers, ourselves, Red Bull on the financial side.

"For us it can be just good for next season if we feel this commitment. If this commitment is not there, it's difficult. We are very confident with Tonio that he has it. With Scott we still have some discussions going on, and before we sort out these points we don't want to confirm him."

Toro Rosso confirm Speed

Saturday, February 24th 2007, 16:13 GMT

Scuderia Toro Rosso have confirmed that Scott Speed will continue racing for the team this year, as revealed earlier today by autosport.com.

The American's future remained uncertain in recent months, but after reaching an agreement with the Red Bull-owned squad, the team said he will continue to drive alongside Tonio Liuzzi.

Speed has tested for Toro Rosso at Bahrain today, where he finished the last among 16 F1 drivers on the timesheet.

The team said, however, that the last three-day session at the Middle Eastern track, where the new STR2 car had its first proper testing, proved productive.

"We are still very much in the early stages of development, learning about the car and how to work with it," said chief engineer Laurent Mekies.

"This meant that for the first two days, we did not cover as much mileage as we would have liked, but this is inevitable when learning about a new car.

"But by the third day, we managed to increase our number of laps and pick up some speed, as we worked on aero and mechanical set up, as well as evaluating the two types of tyre Bridgestone will make available to us for the race here in April."
Sweet, I just read that on autosport myself. That is awesome, hopefully he's able to do more this year than last.

I'm guessing that's a one-race deal, if at all.

I'm alright with Honda's crazy-different livery, its mostly blue. It reminds me a lot of Audi's livery for the Race of a Thousand Years back in 2000.

Now the rumor is that it's a Google Earth sponsorship.
StuBeck 02-24-2007 08:46 PM

That is an ugly ass car if it for real.
StuBeck 02-24-2007 09:21 PM

Finally looked at the times for the session. Red Bull was better at least, although Speed being last isn't too great, but not unexpected.
artkevin 02-24-2007 11:36 PM

That Honda is Gawd Awful! Pleasepleaseplease don't be for real...

When was thew last time Speed was in a F1 car? He has had to sit out because of all that contract bull for quite awhile so I don't expect his times to be too high too quickly. Has he even been on the Bridgestones before?

Edit: I suck. I found of a shot of him on the B'stones from Dec 8th. Dammit.
StuBeck 02-24-2007 11:55 PM

I think that was the alst time he was in one.
StuBeck 02-25-2007 12:01 AM

There seems to be expanded NASCAR coverage at autosport this year, probably from Montoya.
Ferg 02-25-2007 12:25 AM

They're also covering MotoGP for the first time as well, which is nice. :)
