Alonso predicts very close 2006 season

By Pablo Elizalde Friday, February 24th 2006, 10:28 GMT

World Champion Fernando Alonso believes the 2006 season will be a lot closer than the previous year and reckons several teams will be in the running for the titles.

"It's always complicated (to make predictions) because you never know what the others are testing with, but it looks like Honda, Ferrari and Renault are the strongest teams," Alonso told reporters in Barcelona.

"McLaren are now improving a lot and they could be ready for the first race.

"It's going to be a very close season and the team who manage to develop their car the most will be the favourites. Maybe now we are all at the same level so we have to wait and see how every team develops to know who will be the winner."

Alonso became the youngest Formula One champion last season after beating McLaren rival Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn and the Spaniard were the only contenders for most of the season, with Ferrari's Michael Schumacher finishing far behind the young duo in third place.

The Renault driver benefited from McLaren's problems at the start of the season to open a gap Raikkonen would never be able to erase despite his team's improved form in the latter part of the year.

Alonso reckons this season he will not have that advantage.

"I think last year Renault and McLaren were above the rest," Alonso added. "McLaren made a few mistakes and we benefited from it, but this year a lot of teams are closely matched and the points will be evenly spread."

The Spaniard, however, reckons himself and his team are ready to repeat the feat.

"Last year we started thinking that Ferrari would dominate, that it would be like in 2004, dreaming of winning a race and then we ended up fighting for the title. This year we start with a different mentality.

"We have a competitive car, we know how to win the championship because we did last year and we are going to try to repeat that. We know we have a car to be up there fighting."

Super Aguri expect 'acceptable' performance

Friday, February 24th 2006, 10:39 GMT

Super Aguri's chief technical officer Mark Preston has been left encouraged by the performance of the team in their first proper test in Barcelona.

The team faced a race against time to start testing their SA05 car, but they were able to complete a three-day test at the Spanish circuit on Thursday.

The final day of the test was especially encouraging for the team after Takuma Sato nearly completed a Grand Prix distance and finished less than six seconds off the pace.

Preston said the team had delivered more than they had hoped and reckons their performance at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix will be acceptable.

"The team has delivered more than anyone imagined possible before we came to Barcelona and this makes us confident that our performance in Bahrain will be acceptable," said Preston. "Yuji (Ide) performed well during his first F1 test and Taku has been pushing hard to increase the performance of the car.

"These three days have helped to gel the team together, and that includes both the Super Aguri and Honda personnel, who have been central in our getting to this test. The engine performed faultlessly, which is a good indicator of our reliability for the first race.

"The test fulfilled our requirements and we were able to solve a number of systems-related issues. By the third day the car ran reliably all morning, allowing us to begin a programme of performance evaluations. Part of these evaluations allowed us to run our Bridgestone tyres for Bahrain and we are happy with the choice that we have made.

"Overall the team is tired following a week of very hard work, but amazingly we have achieved all of our goals and we are now looking forward to ticking the next box on the list in our test at Silverstone next week."

Super Aguri will continue with their preparations for the start of the season next week at the British track, where they will test the revised bodywork to be used in Bahrain.
Mosley says this is his last mandate

By Michele Lostia Friday, February 24th 2006, 11:49 GMT

FIA president Max Mosley has said he will step down from his position once his current term expires, and claims he already has a substitute ready.

The Briton, 65, was re-elected at the end of last year for another four-year term, his fourth successive one.

Mosley, who announced his resignation from the post in 2004 before being asked to stay, first took the helm of the FIA in 1991.

"In 2004 I resigned and was called back. In the end, who attacked me the most are the ones who got the biggest benefits from my presidency," Mosley was quoted as saying by Autosprint magazine.

"If the current issues are solved, I will reduce my activity. In any case, this is the last mandate, and I already have a substitute ready."
On a side note, 2006 seems to be the year that women finally make some headway into top line motorsport.

There's Danica Patrick in the IRL
Katherine Legge in Champ Cars
Vanina Ickx and Susie Stoddart in the DTM

Now NASCAR, the WRC (Michelle Mouton who?), and F1 need to get on the ball. :)
Alonso on top as Barcelona test ends

Friday, February 24th 2006, 16:29 GMT

Formula One's penultimate week of winter testing came to an end on Friday as Fernando Alonso led the way at the Barcelona circuit on the final of a four-day test.

The World Champion was unable to get into the 1:13s like yesterday but still finished over three tenths clear of his closest rival, Honda's Rubens Barrichello.

Renault continued working on their preparations for the Bahrain Grand Prix, running the revised aero package to be used in Sakhir.

Both Alonso and teammate Fisichella completed more than a Grand Prix distance as the French squad put their V8 engine to the test for the third consecutive day. Fisichella finished as third fastest behind Barrichello, who was joined today by test driver Anthony Davidson.

The Briton replaced compatriot Jenson Button at the wheel of the RA106, enjoying a fruitful day as he covered two Grand Prix distances on his way to the fifth fastest time.

Christian Klien showed promising pace in the Red Bull RB2, the Austrian finishing in fourth place, slightly over half a second behind Alonso.

Klien's teammate David Coulthard, on the other hand, had another day to forget and completed only five laps before stopping on track with mechanical problems. The Scot did not return to work.

Nico Rosberg in the Williams was once again the quickest of the Bridgestone runners with the sixth fastest time, the German covering just 41 laps. His teammate Alex Wurz, taking over from Australian Mark Webber, finished down in 10th in the second FW28.

Ralf Schumacher continued with his streak of spins and, after going off track twice yesterday, he caused another red flag today when he spun around noon, ending up in the gravel.

His Toyota teammate Jarno Trulli had a more productive session and completed 100 laps, although the TF106 continued to be far off the top of the times.

Formula One's biggest test next week will take place at Valencia, where Renault, McLaren, Honda, Williams, Toyota and Red Bull are scheduled to complete their final preparations for the start of the season.

Today's times:

Imola
BMW cut Imola test short

Friday, February 24th 2006, 14:46 GMT

The BMW Formula One team completed on Friday their three-day test at the Imola circuit, where weather conditions forced the squad to end their session prematurely.

After two days of rain, the team were hoping for better weather today, but it was not the case and neither Jacques Villeneuve nor test driver Robert Kubica were able to complete any timed laps.

Villeneuve was nonetheless pleased with their work at Imola.

"Apart from the bad weather in Imola, pre-season testing went quite well because we did a lot of laps and we didn't have too many mechanical problems," said Villeneuve. "We did a race simulation, which we completed, and did even more laps than a race distance.

"The performance is definitely a big improvement compared to last year. How this compares to the competition is very difficult to judge, but I strongly believe that we are looking better than one year ago. The BMW Sauber F1.06 is easier to handle than last year's car and the BMW engine is very good, very smooth to drive."

Kubica added: "As I am not at all an experienced driver in a Formula One car, the testing opportunities given to me by the team were extremely important. I have been learning a lot. I now understand much more about Formula One already.

"It is not only about the car and driving it, it is also about how to work with the team and with the engineers. After I started testing with the interim car, I feel the BMW Sauber F1.06 is a big improvement. I'm very much looking forward to Bahrain and my new job there."
f1-live.com pay:
I was a member for a while and then I decided to stop it over the winter. They told me "your subscription expires at the end of 2005!" every time I logged in. January 1st, I could no longer log in... all well and fine as I expected. I look at my January credit card bill and they had charged me again. I sent them an email (through their web page) and told them to credit my money since my subscription was over and my service was stopped. Come February I notice they billed me AGAIN! When I went to send them another email, I noticed my account was open again. I told them to close the damn account and send my money back. They have *supposidly* turned off the re-accuring billing, but do not seem inclinded to refund my money for their screw up. So, uh, I'm never sending them money again.

Some of the lighter side of F1 from planetf1.com. For those of you who are not familiar, these "secret diaries" of Schumacher are usually good for a few laughs. If you enjoy this one, check out some of the older on the side. There are usually a good pokes at everyone in the field....

Maybe this is a total noob question, but I've always had this question and none of my F1 buddies have been able to give me a certain answer. I'm curious what the "E" and the "N" decals mean (the "N" might actually be a "Z"). I always notice the "E" near the fuel tank and the "N/Z" near the cockpit/nose. In some pics, it looks like there's a little ring that one can pull right next to the "E." Is that some emergency engine shut down thingymajig? Anybody have a clue?

TimStevens 02-27-2006 07:34 AM

N is the Neutral button. It pops the car out of gear so that the marshalls can push it out of the way.

I'm guessing on the E, but it may be the release to get the seat out of the car without the driver having to unstrap from it.
artkevin 02-27-2006 09:34 AM

The N is also known as a Marshall's Clutch. If you are watching the races on Speed, Steve Matchett calls it that. I'm with Tim on the E thing. Not sure though.
Ide: Super Aguri was a gamble

By Michele Lostia Sunday, February 26th 2006, 21:17 GMT
Newly signed Super Aguri driver Yuji Ide has revealed that he took a gamble on landing the F1 drive and left Japan for Europe despite not having a contract from the new team.

Ide, who finished second in the Formula Nippon championship last year, was confirmed as Takuma Sato's teammate in the all-Japanese outfit.

But Ide says it was he who initiated contact with team founder Aguri Suzuki.

The Japanese said: "I proposed myself to Suzuki in September already, taking advantage of the fact that he and I are friends.

"I then took a gamble, by refusing every offer I got to carry on racing in Japan. Instead, I came to Europe without a contract in my pocket. It could have ended my career.

"Suzuki used to taunt me by saying, 'forget it, I've already ruled you out'..."

Ide, who will make his Formula One debut in the Bahrain Grand Prix in just two weeks, said he was not worried about his first race - and revealed he is looking to imitate wild teammate Takuma Sato.

"I like the way Takuma races in the Grands Prix, so I'll try to imitate him," Ide told Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport.

"But I'm not worried; the leap from F3 to Formula Nippon was harder. I just need to improve my English and my knowledge of the tracks.

"I feel a bit like an ambassador for my country. I especially want to demonstrate that a Formula Nippon driver has what's needed to be in Grands Prix racing."

Webber tips Alonso for second title

By Jonathan Noble Monday, February 27th 2006, 10:37 GMT

Mark Webber fears that World Champion Fernando Alonso will have an easy time grabbing his second title this year, judging by the Spaniard's pre-season testing form.

Renault's R26 has proved itself to be quick over both single laps and long-distance runs in testing and Webber believes that all the indications are there to suggest the French car manufacturer will start 2006 in the same dominant way they ended 2005.

"I think Fernando is big. I think Alonso will come out of the box," Webber said in an interview with Australian newspaper the Herald Sun.

"I always thought last year would be one of the easiest championships he would have. Looking at what I saw this past week, he might have an even easier one. He's not lacking in confidence at the moment. He drove superbly last year."

Webber added that the form of Renault will likely also result in Alonso's teammate Giancarlo Fisichella enjoying better results that he did last year.

"I think he will have his best season, partly because Renault will be so dominant and will score a lot of one-twos in the early part of the year," he said.

Speaking about his own chances with Williams, Webber said he was hopeful they could slot in behind the top teams but admitted that there was still a lot of work for them to do.

"We can be a force, but we have a tough phase coming up," he said. "We are going all right but we've got a bit to do."

Richards makes progress on new F1 team

By Jonathan Noble Monday, February 27th 2006, 14:31 GMT

Former BAR boss David Richards is believed to be close to giving the green light to launching his own Prodrive Formula One team for 2008, autosport.com has learned.

Sources have confirmed that Richards recently held talks with FIA president Max Mosley and F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone to discuss the future framework of regulations planned for the sport after 2007.

It is the first indication that Richards' plans for a team are advancing behind the scenes - even though he has made no secret of the fact that he has been considering a return to Grand Prix racing for some time.

Although Richards has declined to comment on the latest developments, he did admit at the Autosport International Show in January that a move to F1 for Prodrive would make sense if new rules planned for 2008 made the sport more economically viable for independent teams.

"I would not say it is unfinished business, but Prodrive is a motorsport business and that is at the heart of everything that we do," he said.

"We are involved in most aspects of it, but we are currently not involved in F1 - although we do supply some components.

"I will only go there (into F1) when the situation allows us to be competitive and to make a profit - and the changes coming for 2008 might allow that to come to fruition."

There are suggestions that David Lapworth, who left his position as Performance Director of Prodrive's Subaru World Rally Team last week, will be involved in the F1 operation.

A report in this week's Autocar magazine also suggests that Prodrive will build a state-of-the-art factory for their F1 team at the former Honiley airfield near Warwick, which has been owned by the company since 1999.

Richards' ambitions for the team come at a time when Mosley is campaigning hard on behalf of independent teams claiming they are the lifeblood of F1. Mosley admitted recently that Richards was 'serious' in his ambitions to launch an F1 team.

"David Richards is looking at it quite seriously, but I think that is a separate operation, he has put a whole operation together," said Mosley. "It would make sense."

Red Bull extend testing programme

By Jonathan Noble Monday, February 27th 2006, 11:07 GMT

Red Bull Racing have decided to extend their pre-season testing programme in a bid to fully get on top of their car before the start of the campaign in Bahrain.

The team had originally planned to finish their pre-season preparations at Barcelona last week but cold weather and rain, allied to reliability problems with their Ferrari-powered RB2, hampered their running so much they have decided to attend the Valencia test this week as well.

Sporting director Christian Horner remains hopeful, however, that the team are slowly getting back on track with their programme after the cooling problems on the RB2 that hit their early running.

Revised bodywork introduced recently has helped overcome some of their dramas, with Christian Klien able to set the fourth fastest time in testing last Friday, although a lot of focus now needs to go into overcoming niggling reliability issues.

"The new bodywork we introduced is doing what it is supposed to do and RB2 has obvious potential which we are now beginning to see," said Horner.

"Klien did a decent lap (on Friday) in testing which proves the car has got speed. The engineers have a good understanding of how the car reacts to set-up changes and the drivers are growing in confidence in its abilities.

"Everyone in the team is working flat out to be as well prepared as possible for Bahrain and the final test in Valencia will give us more track time to smooth out a few rough edges in the overall package."
Some news on the Rossi front.
Rossi says F1 will take a backseat

By Michele Lostia Monday, February 27th 2006, 15:37 GMT

Valentino Rossi has claimed that his Formula One efforts will take a backseat for a while now that the new MotoGP season is just around the corner.

Although Rossi impressed Ferrari team management with his recent run at Valencia in Spain, prompting further speculation that he could land a drive at the team in 2007, he has played down talk that his focus is slipping away from motorbikes.

Speaking at the launch of his Camel Yamaha team in Milan on Monday, Rossi made it clear that he was completely concentrated on defending his title on two-wheels.

"Formula One has always taken a backseat, especially now that we're close [to the new MotoGP season], absolutely," he said.

Rossi is clearly undecided about his future plans, and the fact that he will take care of development of Yamaha's 2007 bike, which will feature an 800cc engine, indicates that he is definitely not ruling out remaining in motorbike racing.

However, when asked by reporters whether an unsuccessful defence of his bike title would be a good enough reason to remain in MotoGP, Rossi said: "No."

Rossi is likely to test again for Ferrari this year, as the team continue to evaluate his potential if they need to find a replacement for Michael Schumacher.

But the Italian has made it clear that he has no problem switching between cars and bikes - and that his racing activities are not suffering at all from his F1 try-outs.

"This is one of the things I long thought about before deciding to try the car, but there is absolutely no problem," he explained. "You could even run on the same day in the car and on the bike because they are so different...The car is driven in a completely different way on totally different racing lines.

"The important things to be quick are completely different compared to bikes. In fact, when I went to Valencia to test in Formula One, the next day I went to Qatar [to test the bike] and after five laps I went quicker than in my fastest lap of [last year's] race, so there's certainly no problem.

"Yamaha has given me the chance to test because they know there won't be any repercussions on my effort on bikes, neither in tests nor in the upcoming season, which is certainly the most important thing for me."
Day One from Valencia.
Rosberg leads the way at Valencia

Monday, February 27th 2006, 16:54 GMT

Nico Rosberg delivered some good news for Williams at Valencia in Spain on Monday when he topped the first day of final pre-season testing.

The Williams driver outpaced McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa by two tenths of a second, as his team continued to put mileage on the seamless shift gearbox that they hope they will be able to start the season with.

Despite being edged out in the timesheets, de la Rosa was overjoyed with the performance of the latest spec Mercedes-Benz engine as he began a programme to evaluate its reliability.

The Spaniard completed a total of 146 laps and is hoping to complete two full race distances by tomorrow morning, after which Kimi Raikkonen will take over the car.

Speaking to autosport.com, de la Rosa could not hide his delight with the latest findings.

"This is the latest spec engine (for Bahrain)," he said. "The engine is definitely getting better. I am not saying it is perfect, but we are going in the right direction and I am happy - although I will be happier when we complete the two race distances."

Mark Webber was third fastest but suffered two mechanical problems during the course of the day.

Heikki Kovalainen only managed to complete 54 laps to set the fourth quickest time, bringing out the red flags once just before lunch, while Gary Paffett spent the day in the orange MP4-20.

He brought the red flags out at 3.30pm after deliberately running the car dry during fuel consumption tests.

Today's times:

Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Rosberg Williams-Cosworth (B) 1:11.030 85
2. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes (M) 1:11.238 146

E disables the electrical system.

RE: Pick 6

Yes, we have been the impreza.net team for several years now. The member list does not reflect actual participants, as several have not been active for a couple of year, and poor Fred is gone... It'll take a few weeks to sort out the regular players from the occasional ones.

Before you pick your drivers for Bahrain, note that this might be last year's schedule, as the drivers list is not current.

Your's truly choked from second to fourth (or was it fifth) in the last two races last year, and missed out on the Krispy Kremes offered by Ken (or Grandpa Rex?) for podium finishers showing up somewhere in Cali to claim them.

N = emergency neutral, which can't be re-engaged on the fly.
E = emergency electrical disconnect

Thanks to everybody who's helped me sort out what "E" and "N" mean!!
AndyRoo 02-27-2006 11:09 PM

Just to remind you all...I won the pick 6 last year and will win again this year ;)

Also, why isn't called Pick 8?
Ferg 02-27-2006 11:50 PM

"Pick 6" sounds better.
Also, why isn't called Pick 8?
I guess Pick 6 never changed the game's name once the FIA decided to change the scoring system from awarding points to the top 6 finishers of a GP to awarding points to the top 8 finishers.
No decision on US GP before 2006 race

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, February 28th 2006, 11:28 GMT

The future of the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis will not be resolved until after this year's race, a circuit official has confirmed.

Speculation about whether Indianapolis wants to continue hosting the US GP has been rife since the tyre controversy that marred the 2005 event - especially with the circuit's contract to host a Formula One race running out this year.

But despite F1's desire to keep the race on the calendar, because of the importance of the United States market, Indianapolis chiefs have made it clear that they will not rush into making a decision.

Instead, they have said that they want to see how fans receive this year's event before they make a decision about whether they want to continue with F1.

"We had conversations after last year's event and then mutually decided to address the future after we see how this year's event goes," circuit spokesman Fred Nation told The Indianapolis Star.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone admitted earlier this month that he was unsure about whether a new deal with Indianapolis would be struck - and hinted about a possible switch to Las Vegas.

"The contract with Indianapolis expires this year, and I don't yet know whether there will be the conditions to renew it," he said in an interview with Autosprint. "I'm looking around for an alternative solution.

"You can forget the idea of going back to Long Beach, although I'd like a street circuit anyway, like in the 1980's. Ideally it would be a track in Las Vegas, obtained from the 'Strip,' the road with all the most important casinos. We are trying that, we're working on it."
artkevin 02-28-2006 10:20 AM

If they are waiting to see how many people show up this year to sign up again for the USGP we might as well kiss it good bye. They moved the date to a holiday weekend that most people already have planned. The hotels were full before they annouced the date and it doesn't look like the city ever has cared about it as a whole. Indy always seems like F1 is lucky to be there and not the other way around. From talking to locals, because I have never been to the 500, they say the fan fare is so much greater for the 500 then the GP.

Valencia, Day Two.
Renault edge rivals at Valencia

Tuesday, February 28th 2006, 16:40 GMT

World Champions Renault edged their rivals on the second day of this week's testing at the Valencia circuit, which hosts the final major session of the winter before the 2006 season kicks off.

Renault's test driver Heikki Kovalainen posted a best time of 1:10.438 to finish on top of the times as the French squad completed their preparations ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Kovalainen had a busy day, working first on long runs and then on short, faster ones, completing a total of 123 laps.

The Finn finished less than a tenth of a second in front of Honda's test driver Anthony Davidson, who joined the test today. The Briton had a very productive session, completing 146 laps as he worked on tyre testing, doing long runs during the day.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen was third in the McLaren MP4-21, the Finn carrying out pitstop practice during the day. Test driver Pedro de la Rosa switched from the MP4-21 to the hybrid car and covered 109 laps on his way to the fourth fastest time.

Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber were in action for the Williams team, on the Australian's final day of work ahead of the start of the season. Both men carried out the final tyre test ahead of the Bahrain race and also worked on the seamless gearbox.

Webber admitted he was eager to start racing to see how competitive Williams can be this year.

"It is getting better but we still have work to do," Webber told autosport.com. "I know I want to do more testing but I want to start the races to see where we are exactly. This is the last day for me, it is coming so soon, yet I want to see where we are."

There were three red flags during today's session, caused by Raikkonen, Kovalainen and Rosberg, all due to mechanical problems.

Red Bull and Toyota will join the test tomorrow.

Today's times:

Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Kovalainen Renault (M) 1:10.438 123
2. Davidson Honda (M) 1:10.532 146
3. Raikkonen McLaren-Mercedes (M) 1:10.827 73
4. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes (M) 1:10.834 109
5. Rosberg Williams-Cosworth (B) 1:11.268 69
6. Webber Williams-Cosworth (B) 1:11.561 85
Coulthard ready to drive after back injury

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, February 28th 2006, 16:52 GMT

David Coulthard will return to the cockpit for Red Bull Racing at Valencia in Spain tomorrow despite being forced to pull out of last week's test at Barcelona with a trapped nerve.

The Scotsman tweaked his back on the final morning of the test at the Circuit de Catalunya and had to withdraw from driving after just a handful of laps because of the pain he was in.

Although the fact he did not drive during a Red Bull filming day at Paul Ricard on Monday prompted rumours that he could even be a doubt for the Bahrain Grand Prix because of the problem, Coulthard is confident he is now back to full fitness for the final pre-season test.

"I am definitely testing at Valencia," he told autosport.com. "It's just a normal thing really. I tweaked my back stretching one morning and it caused some trouble, but I've had some physio, I've rested it over the weekend and I should be okay for this week.

"If there is a problem then there will be other drivers there ready to step into the car."

It is understood that Red Bull Racing's third driver Robert Doornbos will attend the Valencia test just in case Coulthard needs to rest some more.

This week's run at Valencia is crucial for Red Bull Racing as they bid to make up for the time lost in pre-season testing caused by major cooling issues. The team have yet to complete a full race-distance with their RB2 and are hoping to get on top of the reliability issues that have dogged recent tests.

Sporting director Christian Horner said earlier this week that there were some rough edges that needed to be ironed out.

"Everyone in the team is working flat out to be as well prepared as possible for Bahrain and the final test in Valencia will give us more track time to smooth out a few rough edges in the overall package," he explained.
Indianapolis is full of rednecks. I know, 'cuz southern Florida is full of 'em too(go off coast a bit). They don't know/care about F1 because it involves turning right, much like Nascar.

I have parked in the same place year after year(about 3 blocks from the track). I have spoken with the owner many times, and he says that the fan fare is mild compared to the Indy 500. You can lead a horse to water...

Indy seemed like a good choice, with all the history that the city has(racing-wise). But with the lack of support that its shown through the past 6 years, and last years debacle, I'd really suggest looking elsewhere.

I don't think the track is the best in the world for road racing, far from it, but it does offer something that hasn't been in F1 since the old Monza days. A banked turn. That alone sets it apart in a good away, save 05, form the rest of the damned Tilke designed tracks. Bernie as said some things about it before but the country in gerneral and the city in specific does not support the world's second largest sport. I really wish you would see Mark Webber or JPM or Fernando on the Today Show a week before the race. I wish SI would do a special for it. I wish ESPN would do a 1 hour round table. I wish you would see drivers on every sports/enteratinment show for a solid week before the race. I wish the powers that be would get together and have a REAL race no matter the issues with tires or concrete or whatever.
Grrr. Now my blood pressure is up.
JoD 02-28-2006 01:01 PM

I'm glad that Letterman has at least bothered to have JPM on for the past two years. (And he was really funny if I remember correctly). Too bad it's always been on the Friday of practice before the race, when it's too late for most people to change their plans and go to Indy on Sunday. At least that's some exposure. I do agree with Kevin that there is definitely not enough publicity. Indy points fingers at the the FIA and the FIA points fingers at Indy. It's completely retarded.

Mika
No comment on the redneck thing as I don't see much differnce in spectator enthusiasm on race day as I see at any other track/race I attend. By Sunday most are there for the simple reason to drink and party. This is not a bad thing as it does bring in people and money. A festival with a race going on.

Historicaly F1 has never did that well in terms of attendance numbers in the US. No matter where you go it will get mediocre support.

I am not a fan of Indies road course and Tony George in general but the complex as a whole does a good job of taking on the F1 circus. The ppl, security, team accomodations(garages etc) and in general the look of the front stretch/Pagota is not that bad. Geographically it's also centrally located allowing several major population centers the ease and ability to drive in. Tickets are silly cheap too.

As of today the US does not have any other venue capable of handling F1. I also don't see any track stepping up to the plate in the next 3 to 5 years. Tony has an Ace and Bernie will exploit his options to the fullest for little bargaining power. I bet we see Indy re-sign for another 3 years.

I'm from Indy and still live here, and I agree that it's retarded ^^^. JoD got it right at the bottom of the post. The city doesn't do much for the F1 race like the 500 and the Brickyard, I agree, but at the same time, the 500 has been here for 90 years or so, the F1, only 6 years, unless you count when the 500 was part of the F1 championship, so with Bernie changing and modifying contracts at all tracks, it's hard to get excited to have the race, when it may not be here. I'd like the race to stay in Indy, only because I live here, but I agree the course is not the best option. I'd be interested to see a Vegas race. It would be like a Monaco GP. I've been watching F1 for about 8 years now and absolutely love it. Another problem with this whole situation is the lack of coverage on TV. Yes I know Speed covers it, but with their NASCAR friendly schedule, I don't think too many people even know its on TV. NASCAR has way too much coverage. There are, I think, at least 5 networks that show NASCAR related material (I may be off by one either way). The FIA wonders why F1 and WRC haven't done better here, look at the TV. Only 4 F1 races a year are shown on the network stations, but every IRL, OWRS (CART, or whatever it's called this year) and NASCAR race are televised. I just hope that F1 stays in America, where it goes after Indy, doesn't matter to me, I'll just have to make plans further in advance. :)

It does look like it is within specs from what I can see. Front wing, airbox so forth and so on.
TimStevens 02-28-2006 02:18 PM

What's with the big up-turned portion in the middle of the front wing? It seems like all the air would just smack right into the bottom of the nose and not do any good... but what do I know?

It might be similar to McLaren's F1 "zero keel" design so it flows cleaning through the bottom of the car making it a source of extra downforce.
artkevin 02-28-2006 03:13 PM

I think it has to do with the now "old school" twin keel design of the Arrows chassis. Looks like it is meant to speed up the airflow between the keels by compressing the space that it can go through. Looks sloppy to me. I'll try to find examples of the flip up on other twin keel designs.
enduroshark 02-28-2006 04:10 PM
Maybe this is a total noob question, but I've always had this question and none of my F1 buddies have been able to give me a certain answer. I'm curious what the "E" and the "N" decals mean (the "N" might actually be a "Z"). I always notice the "E" near the fuel tank and the "N/Z" near the cockpit/nose. In some pics, it looks like there's a little ring that one can pull right next to the "E." Is that some emergency engine shut down thingymajig? Anybody have a clue?

The "N" tells the marshalls where is the button to throw the transmission in Neutral.

The "E" tells the marshalls where the electrical cutoff switch is.
Ferg 02-28-2006 04:13 PM

So, just so I have it clear, the "N" is for electrical and the "E" is for neutral?

And really, who the **** is Samantha Kingz and why is her name on the side of the Super Aguri?

11 days and counting down....
artkevin 02-28-2006 05:57 PM

Ferg, I got no idea what Smamntha Kingz is. Nothing comes up on google and I have never heard of them.
I can't find any really good pics of the SA05 that I can post but I have seen some that show some really interesting things for a interim 3 year old car. The side pod inlets are extremely small, its running gills and large humps on the side pods leading into chimenys.
Looking pretty good for the new minnows of thr sport.
