Shaved, wire tucked, and custom engine bays? part 28

traction issuez 10-15-2012 12:48 AM

Does anyone have the diagram or schematics of the brake system? I may attempt to venture into deleting the ABS system; I am unsure where and what lines goes where.

Just being honest here, if you are not mechanically inclined enough to figure out the brake system line routing then you dont need to be touching it all.

I can email you my fitting list and pics of my setup however token-negro is correct about what he said above. Hes just comes off a little negative, nothing new.

armyssoldierboy 10-18-2012 11:23 AM

Ok, I'm trying to dive in head first but can't figure out how to disconnect these plugs from the fuse box:

buddsautoparts.com 10-18-2012 11:28 AM

You have to disconnect that one through the top.
armyssoldierboy 10-18-2012 11:33 AM

I looked. I'm no idiot, maybe blind though lol
buddsautoparts.com 10-18-2012 11:57 AM

There are small clips that you have to lift from the bottom push the thing out the top then angle it and remove it form the bottom. If i had one in front of me it would be easier to explain. I just did this on a customers car a few weeks ago.
armyssoldierboy 10-18-2012 01:35 PM

Ok there were two clips on the ends that I had to press for the big one. I think I see a couple for the two white ones but I need something thinner than my flathead.

Got it. I used a thin piece of aluminum I had shaved off from the radiator shroud I made yesterday. :)
armyssoldierboy 10-18-2012 03:34 PM

Damn, right when I thought I was making progress... I can't get this to budge

Don't worry, you can't see it on any computer. :D
armyssoldierboy 10-18-2012 11:47 PM

Lol sorry. Its the big harness with the plastic piece that slides into the fuse box...it runs to the alternator. The pic was from engine side looking at the side of the box.

^^I work on Conn, live on York Town.

Edit: I got it. There were a couple clips under the tape that separate that whole plastic piece in two. I got all the wires pulled through and the alternator hooked back up. Did y'all just mount the fuse tray without the big plastic white "box"?
armyssoldierboy 10-19-2012 06:59 AM

Edit^
jvsoundwave 10-19-2012 07:21 AM

Fully shaved in for show.. IMO.
But Im cleaning my bay up a Bit... Just tucked my Fuse box and added some better Power and Ground cables. Also added a inline fuse behind the battery so if it blows, I wont have to go into the fender.

Got the wires ran through. I might try to fab a bracket or do the zip lock thing and zip tie it to the other fat harness that runs to the headlights etc

Do y'all extend the wires and route them straight out the front by the fans and behind the headlight to the fuse box?

You are better off replacing the starter and Alternator cable with 4g wire. Extending power wires isnt a good idea. But those smaller wires can be cut and solder in extensions. I would then route the wires through the hole closer to the headlight.
Smurftastic 10-20-2012 12:12 AM

Yup, exactly. Then time to start shaving :)
armyssoldierboy 10-20-2012 11:14 AM

All done for now. Moved fuse box, deleted windshield washer reservoir (I don't have hood sprayers), removed the sprayer lines, relocated abs sensor wires, removed a bracket by the master cylinder and shaved off this other piece of plastic that stuck past the radiator shroud.

If you're not using the radiator mounts, cut the nipples off the top of the radiator.
^lol I wondered why it looked extra simple and I could see the whole top of the motor.

Alternator is mounted underneath the engine cause my custom headers dont require any part of them at the front of the engine ;)

Hi D,

Absolutly love this car so sick!

To bad I live in New Zealand or I would come see it for sure. Since I don't have an impreza I have a sf5 auto forester.

See here: http://ozfoz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10876

I would like to do the tucking and shaving for my Foz, I like the Subaru engine just not the "add ones" on the side, abs ect.

Just wondering with the loom that had to come into the bay like brake booster ect what did you do with it?
Did you leave it as is or did you cover it up?
Also with the loom on the fire wall how I'd you tuck that please?

Actually my power steering pump stayed in the usual spot.. I just moved the PS reservoir to the A/C position.

That's all changed now though.. Went reversed manifold and put the alternator in the A/C spot.

The more time I spend extending and relocating wires, the more I realize how much more time this requires than I thought it would. Not that this deters me :)

Engine bay looks like a warzone right now...

I assume you guys are all relocating your washer bottle tanks to down behind the from bumper like a lot of cars are factory, which tanks are you using for this? Or am I better off relocating it to the trunk with the battery

I'm eliminating mine completely. if I was to keep it I would replace it with an aluminum style tank for a cleaner look.

I intially relocated mine to the trunk with the battery, and then just removed it all together. I've ran with no washer tank for the last few months.. doesn't bother me. Maybe I'll put it back in now that winter's arriving :)
Grayguy 10-31-2012 10:17 PM

Apparently Minnesota is just a dusty dirty place I guess haha.

I think I'll get a Chevy truck tank (nice and rectangular) and mount it in the trunk.

What all is involved in moving the fuse box into the car, there really isn't a good explanation of the process that I can find

It's not really hard to do without directions, but it is more time consuming than you'd think. Simply unplug everything from the fuse box, take off the ground, and slip through the sidewall. Then pull all the wires through. The time consuming part is figuring out how you want to mount the fuse box in the quarterpanel or under/behind the bumper support. Whether or not you decide to extend any wires will dictate your freedom to relocate.
ELFAM0S024 10-31-2012 10:35 PM

End results are all worth the trouble
Grayguy 10-31-2012 11:23 PM

I know I can just tuck it under the bumper/fender well area with not too much trouble, but I think it'd be better off relocated in the car so I don't have to pull the front end apart if a fuse goes. I guess I'll just have to hunker down for a day and take everything apart and figure it out.

This thread is quite the inspiration

Fuses don't go often enough to worry about honestly. How many have you changes in the life of your vehicle so far? I've put 50k on my car since I bought it and not touched a fuse.
Grayguy 11-01-2012 08:18 AM

Actually I've replaced whole fuse boxes in 2 of my cars in less than 50k combined, one because of a fluke failure and one because my fender liner was broken. Here in the frozen north where they salt everything all winter it doesn't take much to wreck stuff haha.

I'm not really going for a full tucked/shave. Just the basic battery, fuse box, and all the junk on the left, relocate. And as I mentioned I plan to use the mini keg as the washer fluid reservoir. I was going to relocate it inside somewhere but I think the keg under the hood will look nifty. I got quite a bit of work ahead of me but it'll be worth it after seeing all the projects on this thread.

I can't wait to hear them! So this is my first time doing anything like this and right now I have the fuse box in the fender but seeing that this will be a DD I'm concerned about blowing a fuse and needing to access it quick. Now I know the best thing to do would be to put it in the car some where. But I thought about making some sort of bracket to put the box in the same spot as the fog light so I could just pop off the cover and access it. Any thoughts?

Also..... Mani and TGVs are done at powder coating!!!

sfk1412 11-19-2012 01:23 PM

Found the place to mount my fuse box. I need to extend the wires about 5-6 inches just to be safe and also trim some of the bumper and few little corners so that i can get the fuse box cover on. But this is where its gonna end up, this way I can take out two bolts, pop the head light out and access the fuse box fairly quick if needed. I'd like some feed back on this idea if you guys can. positive and negative is fine with me. I'd rather know if I'm making a stupid mistake :D
