04' grill options - can anyone point me towards them?

Doesnt seem to be as many 04 grill options as 02-03. Anyone have any links, or pics or suggestions? I like a clean look, possibly removing the center suby emblem all together.
thanks

Just what the doctor ordered......I like the factory without the center section best! Here is mine that I did a month ago.

Did you paint it yourself? If so, what paint did you use?
| broadfield | 08-10-2004 06:38 AM |
The paint is Dupli-Color Engine Enamel. Model # DE1651 "Cast Coat Iron". I did not use a clear coat.....would be way too glossy. I wanted the exact finish of the factory paint......and this is it. It is also very durable since it is engine block paint. It took about 2-3 hours. But I expect it to be dead on perfect. In the great words of Jesse James; " It's either perfect, or it's crap"

i went to home depot and bought some gutter gaurd. i cut it to size using the OEM grill as a template. I gave it three coats of black engine enamel. it looks great and cost me 6 bucks. you can also cut away the center section like broadfield has.

what does minor cutting modifactions mean on the grillgcraft? does this mean it's not a direct bolt on? does the bumper have to be cut, or the grill?
| BurtonCR | 08-10-2004 05:50 PM |
The grill might need to be drilled into (thats what it meant for the 02 grills).

here's a how-to by BShow on WRXFanatics:

the short answer:
cut the center out (cut higher than level), sand w/ 150grit, sand w/ 400grit, wet sand, prime, and paint.

hey thanks guys. The DIY is definitely the way to go for me. $119 for that grillcraft POS that doesnt even look as good is ridiculous. Hope to have it complete this weekend.
| Subie Gal | 08-11-2004 12:08 PM |
wow IMHO - calling grillcraft grills a pos is way off the mark
i've been using these on my SCCA Pro rally car for 2 years now
they are solid. - not some flimsy D.I.Y. home depot mesh
they are steel (not gutter guard aluminum  )
they are powdercoated not painted - they dont chip, or scuff
they are fixed and will not bend or flex like your home depot special
and they function. keep the bugs, debris and crap out of the IC & Radiator
Really, before you go calling something a POS (just coz you cant or wont afford it) - you should probably do some research on the product.
looks good

Hey subiegal -easy... First off, I certainly meant no offense to anyone who uses or endorses their product. My apologies. 2nd- I really only wanted to remove the center emblem, which to me, is visually more pleasing. Broadfield accomplished that basically for free, by simply cutting it out. I am not trying to argue that a "home depot" DIY grill would be of better quality than your grillcraft. I think it's fair to say most of us are on some type of budget, and with my car really only used as a street-daily driver, I don't have the same concerns for functionality as a full out rally car such as yours. I'm not usually one to ever speak up, regardless of my opinion. The one time I do, it causes tension. Again, I apologize.

i can vouch for jamie because i just bought the lower section off of her for my sti-- they are very high quality and very easy to install (about 15mins)
and they are very functional as far as keeping crap from hitting the coils--i had a bird hit the grill and it was stuck in it and the grill still looks good as new once it was washed off
very good product and vendor
thanks jamie

Thx for the reply anyway - appreciated. I want to get one or the other....I don't like the GrillCraft logo emblazoned so prominently, and I don't like the fact that the Prodrive is only offered in an SS finish (aside from the $$$). Do you think removing the Grillcraft logo and swapping in the "STi" badge is fairly easy? TIA, again. :)

you guys have to realize that the grillcraft is just the mesh part. You use your stock grill frame (modified) to make it fit. These other grills come wiht the frame and the mesh. Hence the price difference. I personally don't want to chop up my stock grill frame. I'm trying to locate a used OEM grill to put the grillcraft one on, but I'm not having any luck. This is in case i want to put it back to stock when I sell the car. I wish the grill craft came with its own frame, so you could just bolt it on the car. I'd pay an extra 50 or so bucks for that.
| mindchatter | 08-12-2004 03:37 PM |
Chicago04 - do you have any knowledge of the Prodrive piece? And are you sure of the install on the GrillCraft? I saw install instructions on their site and it said something like "approx. 15 mins. work". j/c, and thx.

Yeah. I like the Syms grille, but for the price, I'm kind of leaning toward the Charge Speed.
I found it for $225 on worldoneperformance.com.
Anyone know any cheaper places?
But the Syms grille is $268 on japanparts.com. Not to bad of a price.

I don't have knowledge of the prodrive piece, sorry. the install instructions for the grillcraft are here:
http://www.grillcraft.com/installs/installs.asp?action=view&install=141
It could very well take just 15 minutes, it doesn't look like it's hard to do. Cut off the stock emblem and holder, then drill two holes on the side of your grill frame so you have something for the mesh to attach to. My issue is keeping the stock grill intact in case I have to sell. I too like the Syms and Charge speed, but I wish they weren't made out of fiberglass, cuz i don't want to have to paint them.
Man... I though parts for my VW B5 were expensive. Suby exterior parts are actually almost double!

Looks good, but I'm dissapointed that they recessed the lower grill so far and left the bumper-beam exposed. It looks acceptable in black, and terrible in silver. I'd like a flush silver mesh for my bottom grill (and just a stock upper grill).

You could probably modify your stock grill (after cutting off the center emblem part) to look like the Syms one. There isn't anything super fancy in it. Of course, you wouldn't have that Syms emblem on it.

Update: So I went ahead and removed the center emblem from the stock grill Like broadfield yesterday. Just took my time, put the whole assembly in a vice with some cloths around it and sawed it off using various hand saws of different shapes and sizes. It looks pretty good, but upon close inspection, you can see scratches. I think when I get some more time, I'll want to sand it and repaint. Guys have any suggestions on which paint , and color? I was thinking a different color combo for the rim portion, and the mesh backing. Any suggestions? Thanks

One note on the DIY write up; I didn't notice it saying anything about a body filler!?! You will notice that once the center section is cut out, the area left barely slopes down. So I used a fiberglass reinforced body filler to level out the area PERFECT. Rough sand that with 80, 220,320, filler primer, wet 400 then final paint.
Note- Once you start to sand down the center section before body filler, you might notice a little dimple right in the middle. When sanding the dimple the plastic might get really thin and most likely turn into a little hole.......so I also used the fiberglass body filler on the back side to reinforce it and give that area some thickness. Then apply body filler to the front and sand away. The filler on the back will not be seen so it doesn't need to be perfect, just fairly flat so it sits back on top of the bumper correctly.
