autometer gauges? Crappy?

So I am thinkin about getting a triple or double gauge pillar, or that defi pod, and putting some gauges in it. Probably boost, oil pressure ,and one more.
Question is, are autometer gauges crappy gauges? I know defi are some of the best, but I cant really justify spending that much on a gauge right now.
Thanks.

autometer has many diffrent types of gauges ranging from affordable to just as pricey as the Deft, are they crappy? Nope. Did I notice the change from my basic autometer gauges to my Defi BF gauges? Yep. But if you want cheap gauges that work go with autometer. Oh yeah i was just looking for gauges for a friend of mine and www.daddysscp.com has some nice gauges for reasonable prices.

autometer gauges are standard sizes, and everything on your car is metric.
autometer makes gauges in 52mm and 67mm no 60`s.
there EGT probe doesnt work with our bung`s
if i was going to redo anything on my car, the autometer gauges would be the only thing! but not many people have 67mm gauges in a carbon fiber pod though....

The autometer egt will work..What i think he ment is the probe will not go into the factory egt location. You have to drill and tap a hole in the manifold. Which isn't a bad thing you will get a better reading from the manifold then where the stock egt is.Because the stock egt is there to make sure the pre turbo cat isn't melting..

So I am assuminig the boost would work fine, since its just splicing the hose and inserting a t unit. The oil pressure sending unit from autometer wont fit the subaru's?
Why not?
Why not?

i had some pro comps, but sold them before i installed them
| rexxer | 11-08-2005 06:36 PM |
I had Autometer gauges and a gauge pod in my '02 WRX. I loved them. I wouldn't buy the A/F gauge again as it was fairly useless. You need wideband, not narrowband. The oil pressure sender just needs an adapter to fit the WRX. There are a number of install walk throughs on the net. The boost gauge was great... just make sure you get a Boost/Vacuum gauge.
I had Lunar series. The green lighting went with the WRX gauge lighting. My budy had the Cobalt series. They didn't match the car, but wow, did they look cool... and they looked to be of higher quality.

i have a pro comp boost/vacuum in my rex and all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago its now reading 5 psi low....reads -5 with the car off

the autometer oil temp and EGT work great for me. I have the pro comp ultralite series. The oil temp gauge uses a 1/8"NPT fitting... I went to subaru and bought the oil gallery plug and tapped a 1/8"NPT fitting into it and it works great. Fitment was A+. The EGT is good too.. I have a stainless manifold so I welded the included bung on and it work good.

The autometer gauges work fine, but the house for the boost gauge is like a straw so go to wrxtra.com they sell extras for the autometer gauges like the house for the boost gauge.

I have the Nexus gauges and love them... Yes, the autometer boost gauges come with very small diameter tubing that can lead to slow response time for the gauge... But correcting that issue is as easy as taking a trip to Ace Hardware/any auto parts store and getting some new tubing and a different tee fitting.

I've got the Nexus gauges in an Autometer cluster bezel and they basically look stock..but sexier!
In the daytime the white/red color matches the Subaru colors and at night there's a green that is bang-on - and dimmable! Or blue, red, purple...
Always accurate - the boost gauge starts at zero every time it initializes.
Sweet features (uploadable, playback, etc.) Unlike many gauges, they can be basically blacked out (red color at lowest brightness.)
Spend the dough, you'll be VERY happy with them.

GO to egauges.com and pick yourself up some VDO Vision Gauges. I just got some and they are REALLY accurate, REALLY CHEAP, and a perfect match to a stock rex interior. I bought mine used from a member on here for dirt cheap and perfect condition. You can't go wrong with these gauges. Far better than Autmeter IMO
| fastwrx006 | 11-18-2005 04:59 PM |
The autometer gauges a little inacurate, I would always rely on my turbosmart eboost for boost pressure readings. My autometer gauge showed 20-21 psi while the e-boost showed 17-18 psi.

I bought a used carbon fiber boost gauge on here. When it got to my house, the needle had fallen off. I sent it to auto meter to be repaired and 2 days later, i had a new one at my front door. The BEST customer service. They asked for a reciept and i said i got it as a present:D

any autometer that would match the stock wrx green glow??
| Lachlan | 11-18-2005 05:22 PM |
The problem there is most autometer gauges have "around the bezel" lighting rather than "through the bezel." VDOs are cheap and match the stock green fairly well. Greddy matches too but is more expensive.

Well I am a big fan of AutoMeter, so I'll toss in my story. My Nexus gauges were working great, then all of a sudden the EGT gauge would randomly freeze during driving. I told AutoMeter, and they asked me to ship the gauge and remote to them. They said they would replace the gauge, and reflash the software on the remote to the latest version. Sent them out on Saturday afternoon, and got a package back from them last night. They did not just replace the gauge and reflash the remote, they sent me a brand new, off the shelf, EGT gauge and remote. So not only did they give me back the parts I needed, they gave me extra! Now I have a spare EGT probe and fittings, extra network wiring, etc.

I need more serious gauges these days.

Just FYI for everybody who doesn't already know. I just checked the Autometer website and apparently they just came out with the sport comp II, which has LED lighting through the dial and a glowing needle like the wrx stock. I haven't seen them for sale anywhere yet, but if the price is comparable to the original sport comps then they may turn out to be a good low cost dependable gauge to match the stock gauges.

I know, I know a old thread, but I want to get people's opinion. I have the Carbon series mechanical gauge. Now I know the temps are changing and that can cause the gauge to read a bit off. So anyways....when I shut my car off the gauge always goes to 0. But when sitting at a light, the gauge used to stay dead nuts at 20psi in vac but know it moves between 15-17psi....while driving and letting off the gas it used to dip down to 20-22psi and now it's around 18-20psi when I let off the gas. So I went and had a boost leak test done and no leaks, car was fine. Sooooo what could be the problem? I have had the gauge for a coupe years and it just started doing this recently "past few weeks" and it has gotten a bit colder......any ideas?
Contact Autometer ?
Or buy the electric gauge?

Thanks

A boost leak test won't tell all. You need to check all your vacuum lines and make sure none are leaking, kinked, or any other issues!
I've had the same Autometers on my race car for years now and they are all mechanical with no issues and they get used every weekend...
