Want Ferrari type horn part 1

jikhead 11-15-2004 05:35 PM

Want Ferrari type horn
Anyone know what type of horns Ferrari's use? Would like to mod that to get that cool sound.
joe z 11-15-2004 05:37 PM

go to a ferrari dealership and order one
Iceman12321 11-15-2004 05:39 PM

whats so special about a ferrari horn?
speedmonkee 11-15-2004 05:43 PM

Fiamme Horns. You can get the same thing at a local pep boys for about $30. Nothing special about them.
jikhead 11-15-2004 05:43 PM

Don't know, just like that cool expensive euro sound
gjhsu 11-15-2004 06:03 PM

I'm gonna get so flamed for this..... but Ferrari horns sound sissy. Even moreso than the stock Subaru horns.

:runs away:
95legacy 11-15-2004 06:14 PM

True that my horn is gay as hell on my car. Its sooo weak n small sounding.
Peace,

Novelty Horns... *sigh*
SubaruImpreza_power 11-15-2004 06:17 PM

I can't wait to take off these POS Air horns on my car... Not only do the Ricers in my city have them But they really don't have the punch to make people move.

I'm getting the Hella's this time around.

1. You dont have a Ferrari
2. You have a Subaru
3. Why make a Subaru sound like a Ferrari?
4. Why dont you just go buy a Ferrari if you want that sound.
e28fixer 11-15-2004 10:58 PM

I understand your desire to change out the horns. That's the very first mod I do to every new car. My wife's Miata and my WRX both have the Fiamm electric (not air) horns installed that I picked up at PepBoys. Both sound like a big Buick when we want to be seen/heard.

Others who have posted are correct. You'll need to install air horns to get the Ferrari sound. I don't know for sure, but I suspect Ferrari installs horns made by either Hella or Fiamm. Both offer air horns. Take a look at the links below...

Keep in mind that air horns and their pump take space. Plan your install carefully and you'll be pleased with the results. Also, wire them up for a test before you drill any holes. You may not end up liking what you hear.

did you say a big buick? that sounds tempting. i don't know whether to duck in shame or laugh when i hear my subaru OE horn.
WRX8XB 11-16-2004 08:31 AM

i love my horn but mostly b/c i can just lay on it and not bother anyone, it really relieves my aggression but without the adverse affects of someone wanting to shoot me.

i had Ferrari air horn on my old 64 MINI.
still kept the stock one, but added air horn with different switch. in case i wanna tell someone to get out of my way.
mini stock horn was too cute that i dont think anyone cared even if i honked :)

OMG!!!
Is that photoshopped or is it for real? If you really have 4 Hellas in your car you are probably drawing 40+ amps every time you hit the horn and it must be the loudest thing on the road.
Unabomber 11-17-2004 04:10 PM

That ain't no Photoshop! :) It actually vibrates my whole front end when they go off. I just installed the second set this weekend. They are wired in series with the stock horns so it's 4 Hellas + the stock horns. They truely own!
SubaruImpreza_power 11-17-2004 04:31 PM

Holy Crap!!!!
BrianJ1888 11-17-2004 05:20 PM

4 Hella's is probably damn loud, but there's a guy in my area who's got a train horn on his truck. It needs it's own air compressor to run...
SpeedRexer 11-17-2004 06:49 PM

Unabomber try to get a sound clip of it. I would love to hear that!

Awesome. I too would like to hear a sound clip.
However I think you meant to say "They are wired in PARALLEL to the stock horns". Wiring them in series would share the voltage between the horns, thus dividing the current and dropping their power roughly by a half. Wiring them in parallel would provide all 5 horns with the full available power and thus make them as loud as they can be.
I bet 4 Hellas are louder than most airhorns you can buy.
SubaruImpreza_power 11-17-2004 07:09 PM
Unabomber try to get a sound clip of it. I would love to hear that!
If your going to do this, please don't put the Mic in the front of the car.. it's not going to do any good.. place the Mic maybe on the side of the car, so that way it's not going to clip the mic.

One person did this and the Hella's sounded like complete crap.
Unabomber 11-17-2004 07:23 PM

I'll try to find someone locally with a camera soon. Mine only takes no sound QT movies. :( Parallel....serial.....it's all the same to me as I work in the electronics industry for a living. I'm actually a sonar technician in the Navy and work on "speakers" that put out 250+dB. :) I thought about train horns, but the wife axed the idea of a compressor, so this is what I had to resort to.
SubyFi 11-17-2004 07:39 PM

Aren't those horns blocking airflow to your radiator?
Jonnyfilmboy 11-17-2004 07:44 PM

I've had the Fiamms on all of my cars. The dual trumpets. I think they sound cool. I tried the Hella triple trumpet horn and didn't like them as much, though they sounded just like my friend's Porsche 911 which was cool. I just bought this in the hopes that it will be a little less of a hassle than trumpets to maintain. Coming in a few days.
Aren't those horns blocking airflow to your radiator?
They are, but I ain't skeerd. It's cold here now and if it's ever a problem, I'll just take two off as I know the original two were never a problem. Besides, are for bling purposes mostly and as we all know.... bling>common sense. :)
SubyFi 11-17-2004 07:56 PM

This thing looks big, where would you install it? It doesn't look like it will fit in front of the radiator.

tooocool49723 11-17-2004 08:04 PM

<- First time i needed my horn (buick merging into the side of my car, first week of owning my car) it wasn't there... I honked on that thing for a good 4-5 seconds and NOONE but me heard it. After that, i immediately went home and swapped in my firebird's dual horns for the stock one.

Yes, they are loud. They were meant to be mounted inside the fully boxed in really thick sheetmetal fender of some heavy american iron, so out in the open air (with the hoodvents right above them btw) their very loud.

Mabye not as loud as 4 hella's. but they are loud.
Jonnyfilmboy 11-17-2004 08:09 PM
This thing looks big, where would you install it? It doesn't look like it will fit in front of the radiator.
Definitely not. But I think behind the passenger headlight it might work. We'll see. Or near the brown alarm horn toward the rear of the engine bay. Maybe the roof.
powerlabs 11-17-2004 08:31 PM

Airhorns are not directional so you can install that virtually anywhere.
Having diaphram horns such as the Hellas mounted in front of the radiator makes the far more efficient though. Its funny because they really don't sound too loud from inside the car... But if you are standing in front of it...
SubyFi 11-17-2004 08:38 PM

Cool! I think I will add that horn to my Xmas Wish List :)

TreyS 11-17-2004 09:48 PM

I have the dual Hella's behind my driver side foglight and I love them. The OEM horn sounded like a cheap POS.

I love to hit it when I go under a bridge and scare the @!@!$#% outta people.

Very intriguing. I prefer the sound of true Italian air horns (and I try not to buy German products), so I'd be very interested to hear (argh, horrid pun  ) how they work out. Let us know!

Thanks,

Well well well....this morning I went to the junk yard in search of a MY90-MY94 AWD MT Legacy for the final drive and no luck. Instead I took the 2 horns off a Lexus ES 250 (Camry horns maybe?) and put them on mine. Sounds a lot better with the lower and high tones together. It even sounds better with one low tone and the stock Impreza horn. I'm going to put all 3 of them, the ES 250 and stock Impreza horns together and get the ultimate low, med, and high tones.

Yea I'm cheap...

OMG!!!

NO WAY. I'm having a hard time believing that guy has 6 horns behind his grille. That's 60AMPS when he hits the horn, 720 watts of horn power. I bet the whole car buzzes and rattles. I bet you would be able to kill small animals and old people with a set up like that
Wonder how he wired it up electrically  Probably needs its own circuit with a heavy duty relay and fuse.

And i'd also like to let you in on a little secret. Each set of the supertones comes with it's own relay/fuses/etc. They hook up directly to the battery, and use the stock horn as a trigger (to the relay).

6 supertones. Reminds me of footage of an A-10 Warthog firing on a tank.

Let me let you in to an even less known little secret: I have Hella Supertones, and the relay they come with burned out in my car after about a month. Someone else here reported a similar experience. I ended up running them right off the stock horn relay with an upgraded fuse.

Also...
Hahah yeah Unabomber. I thought you would like that. I really only have 2 hella supertones because I live near the airport and there are always idiot tourists and taxi drivers who are driving around like idiots. I've already made at least 1 taxi driver lose some hearing out of his left ear for lane guttering and cutting me off.
Nice photoshop though. Had me fooled
Unabomber 11-18-2004 12:43 PM

P.S. file_id's car is photoshopped. He just had a little horn envy. ;) 6 will in no way fit across the front of your car. 4 on the top, 2 on the bottom...maybe, but that's down the road for me I think. My next loudness will be a police PA system that will be installed soon. It's a 100W speaker that will mount on the firewall above my turbo.

My car alarm uses a speaker. It sounds a lot better than a horn.
I think hooking up Hellas to your car alarm would get your vehicle vandalized.

4 Supertones? Awesome.

6? Insane!
jikhead 12-09-2004 08:44 AM

Well, since I started this post I'd figure I'd update on what I did. I first picked up a Fiamm horn at Advance, but wasn't the right kind. I then bought a Fiamm airhorn off Ebay for just $13. I finally got it installed Sunday, and hooked up last night. The sound was just what I was looking for, the Italian air horn sound. It's much louder than stock. You can't hear it at highway speeds due to the loud exhaust note...but you couldn't hear the stock horn either.
Unabomber 12-09-2004 08:58 AM

If you missed it from my other postings, here's 4 Hella Supertones + 2 stock horns going off:

Sounds like a cicada. I'm happy with my air horn.
anti.team 12-10-2004 09:11 AM

You should get a wolf-whistle horn. That way all of the fine hunnies will know that you think they are fine.
