Nomex Driver's Suits...who's got what???
I'm looking for suggestions for a good firesuit for stage rally.

My current choices are these two:

http://saferacer.com/ulshmurasu.html

http://www.upr.com/products/apparel.asp?id=2642

I'm looking for opinions on the various brands and if spending the extra $$$ is going to be beneficial for my n00b co-driver self. I'm assuming spending more $$$ will get me a lighter weight suit?

People who have them and use them on a regular basis...please chime in.
10th Warrior 08-31-2006 04:46 PM

mostly, more money equals a better looking suit.

I use a Sparco from ebay.
RaceComp Engineering 08-31-2006 06:33 PM

ALpine Stars.

I have a sparco 5 suit and have no problems with it.

WIth suits weight isnt an issue, its thickness. thicker is better in a fire but is like wearing a sweater and sweatpants, which sucks in warm weather. 2 layers should be a good balance.

Just ordered a new Gforce GF545 from OG Racing:

http://www.ogracing.com/eshop/itemdetail.asp?ses=131ynlpv6hzc1fwo2g&itemid=1007&showbrake=1

SFI 3.2A/5, TPP 23

They were nice enough to match another vendor's price at $399. Should have it next week.

The Alpine Stars GP Pro LM suit that the ESX team purchased from Myles (Race Comp Engineering) for me is hands down the best suit I've ever worn. Seriously, go touch one somewhere and you'll know why. (Preferably not while it's being worn by a driver at the time. You might get a "look".)

Just got this one for co-driving next year:

http://www.saferacer.com/omppidrsu.html

It seems to run a little large, I could probably fit in a size smaller even though I measured exact for the size I got. Looks OK and doesn't feel like you're wearing a blanket.

Well for $1,049 it's gonna have to drive the car for me too :p
bjorn240 08-31-2006 08:23 PM

Gary is right about the Alpinestars GP Pro LM. They're awesome.

That said, with suits, they'll mostly do a reasonable job of protecting you. Higher price usually means fancier graphics, slimmer fit, lighter weight, and shinier material.

That's not to say there isn't a big difference, but if it's between the cheaper suit and a Peltor or a more expensive suit, and a non rally-specific helmet, then take the cheaper suit and proper helmet each time.
piits 09-01-2006 03:09 AM

GP Pro LM is better then any other middle range suit, because it not that stiff and is quite flexible, thanks to those stretch panels. I have one in the wardrobe :)

the thing with cheaper ones is that first of all - they are stiff and baggy, plus the ventilation is not that good. I wouldn't want to tourture myself just to save some $$$.

on the other end of the line there are ultra-light suits, such as the new OMP suit - the lightest of all, shiny and very comfortable. but then again - if you are not a preffesional and don't actually sleep in that suit, you should go for the middle road.
scoobiegt 09-01-2006 03:28 AM

Alpinestars GP2 is only $630.
http://gtworx.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=220_221_222&products_id=1117

Dont forget you get what you pay for. The astars stuff is worn internationaly and is SFI and FIA approved.
How many layers do you need anyway? 2 is usually the min and this is 2 layers nomex. I heard this suit was developed with the NISMO and SWRT (when they used Astars).
thechickencow 09-01-2006 12:33 PM

I've got a racequip and a gforce.

The racequip is thinner and more comfortable than the GForce which seems stiff and heavy in comparison.

I think if I was buying now I'd look at OMP or Sparco or something in the $500 range or so. They're decent but not too much money plus they look good.

I got one of mine used for $100 (the racequip). Post on SS looking for one if you want, you may be able to save some money from somebody thats upgrading to a newer one.

I have to give a +1 to the Sparco 5. I previously had a G-Force 3-layer suit (fondly referred to as "the potato sack"), but this year I updated to the Sparco suit. What a world of difference. It's vastly more comfortable to wear both in coolness and in fit. With the Sparco suit I was able to concentrate on driving more fully.

Yes, the better suits are expensive, but man are they worth it!

I'm not sure of the model, but I think it's the same as the 505, the cheaper G-Force suit.

I've got the 505...and it's not going to win any awards for looks or comfort (especially w/ the XXL I had to get to get the torso long enough), but it was cheap. And once I was on stage last weekend, I didn't even notice it being hot.
LegacyPGT 09-01-2006 01:41 PM

I have a momo 3 layer suit and a gforce 2 layer, The g-force is a very heavy and hot compaired to my momo. IMO I would save a little more money and get the better suit. It will pay for its self after a few hot rallys. I will be buying a new suit in the next year and it will most likely be a Sparco or a Alpinestars.
thechickencow 09-01-2006 01:43 PM

I don't know what model, whatever fliz said is correct. The GForce is probably 4-5 years old.

I only used it at OFPR last weekend because I couldn't find my racequip one.

I also second what mike says about the hot rallies. It gets damn hot at races like OFPR even when its only about 85 out. I've been warm at LSPR with my racequip even during rainy cold 35 degree stages/services.

Jay
jweiss 09-01-2006 02:14 PM

Thanks for all the feedback on the GForce suits. I'll report back when I get my GF545 next week. The people that I have talked with have said that the GF545 is much better than the older models and is as light and comfortable as the $1000-1500 Sparcos. We will see.

platypus - curious as to how big you are since you said yours fit like a potato sack. You wouldn't be a wee little fellow would you? :)

I'm 6'0 210 lbs with a 38" waist so nothing really fits me like a potato sack :p
RB5 Clone 09-01-2006 02:19 PM

Sparco Fashion 5, done some 25 rallies since bought.

only regret is getting a black one...it doesn't show dirt/grunge much, but is WICKED hot in the sun.

this is how I discovered cool suits...aaaah, now that's better living thru technology. going to experiment with reverse cool suit--i.,e., circulating warm liquid (espresso? gatorade tea?) for winter rallies.

Tom and I aren't really planning on doing any "warm" weather rallies (just LSPR & Sno*Drift on our schedule right now) but I hear ya on spending more for a lighter weight suit. I got a Carrera karting suit this year and I should have just ordered a Shift or a Sparco. I think I would have been a bit happier w/a non-all black suit for summer use.

I'm also thinking if I go to race mechanic skool next year the skools have the mechanic series and I'll be using it more then.

Like jweiss...I don't have the problem of it looking like an potato sack...well maybe looking like a full potato sack.

Christian - I can always sell my soul on my CC for a Peltor. ;)

After owning a OMP, Stand 21, and Sparco, I love my Alpine suit. They design the butt and knees sections for when you are in the car in THAT position. Thia makes the fit incredible. In race trim I am 220, and 6.2". a AP size 60 fits me loose like Villeneuve used to wear his. Since I am still 1 month away from my target weight, working out, training and on Atkins,..I just barely sqeeeeeeeeeeeezing into it now. But every 3 days I put the suit on and walk around the house and sit here at the computer and get used to being in it again. My son made me play Grand Turismo in it and he took out his little childs Bell helmet on and we played GT4 together. KInda cute actually, but anyway...........Alpine Stars ,..love em'.

Myles - I'm 220 and 5'9", I wear a size 60 kart suit and I saw that they recommend a size 58 for my height/weight. True? Untrue?

You just barely fit in the 60 now or are you trying to get down to a 56 or 58??? I too am working out/dieting to get down but I don't want to get a suit and find out it's too small. :(

Christian - I think I might have to sell my soul for a Peltor, my driver got his yesterday and it's worlds better than my Simpson fitted w/an intercom. His is an XL and I'll need a L but the whole cupped headphone thing is so much better.

Villnu' used to wear his suits very loose. I HOPE for mine to be that way in another 30 lbs.

I want my 60 to fit me loose, so I have more weight to loose.

at 5.9" whats your waste?....I am taller and also have a gut(getting smaller), so I have the worst of it, but if you are shorter and rounder(for sake of this explanation)..then that 60 might be whats for you,..BUT I dont know your waste. If you are like 5.9" and waist is like a 40, then yes that 60 is what yiou need. I am a 40 loose, almost back in my 38. When I get down to the right weight Iwill be a 36 loose. I will also suck CHAD BLOCK up at Sema when we go karting. CHAD I am coming for ya........... ;)

i wear a sz 38 pants if that helps in figuring out my "ideal" suit size.
RaceComp Engineering 09-04-2006 08:51 AM
i wear a sz 38 pants if that helps in figuring out my "ideal" suit size.
if you are size 38 pants, and 5ft 9inches, you might need a 60, even though a 58 is prob a better fit. Real question is , for example. In January, I wore a size 42 pants with overhang (lol), at which point I could not fit in to a 60 if they offerered me a lap in a F1 car and 5 people helped me get into the suit.

After Atkins and 40 lbs, I can fit into a 60 now, but I also fit into a size 40 pants LOOSE. But not loose enough to be a size 38 pants. So with my taller frame, a 60 fits me, but my over hang is what made me work out a barter with a personal trainer who needs a an instructor and some old parts for his GC8 ;) .

So its all relative is my point.

So based on overhangage and pants size you could be a 58 or a 60.

Make sense?

Maybe I'm the only weirdly proportioned one around here... I have a 34-inch waist and a 44-inch chest on a 5'8" tall frame. I wear a size 60 Sparco Replica which is plenty loose in the hips for me, and just about "right" in the chest.

Well, I'm a 38" waist and have a good bit of beer room in my 62, if it weren't for my chest I'd fit in a 60 no problem... in fact I might fit in a 60 right now but probably too snugly across my man-boobs.

With the 62 I'm on the last bit of velcro on the waist belt, so waist wise (on my OMP at least) a 60 would work fine, even with the Miller light storage container I've got.

I'm decided to go the economic route (until I'm a non-paying co-driver like Christian) and get the Ultra Shield firesuit to better afford a Peltor brain bucket. My driver got his Peltor and it's far superior than my retrofitted Simspon LX in terms of the intercom set up.

I guess it's for the best as we'll look like a real 'team' as we'll match. :D

you shouldnlt worry about dehydrating. I drink a gallon of liquids every 5-7 hours or so and piss before every stage and soemtimes after as well. You need to worry about overheating in the cars.

Ojibwe was only 80 degrees but in car had to have gotten to around 100.

at shooting star a year ago it was 90-100 outside, which meant racing SUCKED hardcore even thoguh we could put our suits arouns our waists.

Worry about heat, because you can easily control your hydration by having lots of bottles of water/gatoraide in teh car, heat you can't control as easily.

so you need in car cooling. I've got a spare cool system for sale ;)

Really depends on price your willing to spend. I bought a Sparco suit and am quite happy with it. My two co-drivers have found suits for 3/4 less then what I paid for and meet sfi certifications. Higher ends suits meet sfi/fia specs.
