windshield decal rice or not? part 1

fullmonte77 01-30-2005 10:24 PM

windshield decal rice or not?
I want to get a subaru windshield decal it has a black background with white subaru letters and a blue emblem. Would this be rice or not? Would like to dress up the front a little plus it would serve as a sunshield.
earlmale 01-30-2005 10:28 PM

rice! of course "rice" is subjective. if you're in the middle of PA, it may not be. in philadelphia, i'd say definitely rice.
mcowger 01-30-2005 10:30 PM

I disagree. If its tasteful, I don't think its rice.
7SMwrx 01-30-2005 10:34 PM

um, imho, hard to say unless you've got a lot of bling on the thing - but rice it is.
If you'd match it up with some WRC rally-inspired emblems - not really rice.
But enjoy and don't worry about the others - you can always strip it off later.

I think it looks okay, but i chose mine to color match the car so it didnt stick out. And its been on there so long I just leave it there, so the other locals know who I am.
earlmale 01-30-2005 10:41 PM

ya, do what you want- it's your car. have fun! as long as you don't have calvin pissing on a ford emblem, i think you'll be fine.
ADR 04STi 01-30-2005 10:41 PM

I have one on my Silver STi. Its silver, app 6" wide,Subaru is in WR blue and has STi in pink on each side.Like so.

gerbs 01-30-2005 10:44 PM

i've always seen window decals as ricey, unless you have other decals/vinyls well-placed on the car. having a window decal kinda destroys the "clean" look, imo.
fullmonte77 01-30-2005 10:48 PM

Thanks for the input think i will go ahead and order one next week.
Handsdown 01-30-2005 11:29 PM

it's rice, but as long as it's black background, it's not going to look too bad... so, who cares what we think?

though if i were you i'd just get a strip of 10% tint.
Drowner 01-30-2005 11:46 PM

I *had* a navy blue strip on my windshield, to keep the sun out. Until the icy weather last weekend, and my wiper tore it in half, so its gone now.
23b_Rex 01-31-2005 12:05 AM

def rice, leave that for the hondas
paperchasin 01-31-2005 12:13 AM

rice or not, i kno its illegal in some states...
Silverboost 01-31-2005 08:03 AM

its not rice.
SUBYDOODIE 01-31-2005 02:05 PM

Very Rice
twizzstyle 01-31-2005 02:47 PM

My car is crap, but I LOVE my windshield banner!! Thats the best part!!!

Don't even think about whether its rice or not, GET IT!!! :D
Bolty12 01-31-2005 02:58 PM

Haha Twizzstyle , your car is far from crap.

Very nice looking car ! Looks like Im gonna have to save up for my second toy ^ ^ ^ ^
Marx92x 01-31-2005 03:02 PM

I think it would be rice only if it didn't actually mean anything relating to your car.

For example, what you describe sounds perfectly relevent, however "Powered by VTEC" or "APC" = RICE, especially on a Subaru!
FaastLegacy 01-31-2005 03:08 PM

I don't dig it but do what you want. You're the one that has to drive it, not me.

-faast
greg donovan 01-31-2005 05:16 PM

not rice.
wrx plus 01-31-2005 05:28 PM

That would be illeagle in Va. But I did have a windsheild banner on my S-2000 that was bright blue with white letters that said "SPOON SPORTS", not rice!
TREKWRXSST 01-31-2005 05:35 PM

I think done wrong its total rice. If its done tastfully on a Suby it looks rally! I like it if you can do it right. DONT have it be your only "mod"!
esper 01-31-2005 06:03 PM

rice or not, the idea of having a 12 inch high logo describing what the car obviously is on it just seems a bit lame to me.

I mean, the giant metal one I had to scrape off my trunk lid was bad enough. I think all that unneccesary writing and badging ruins the clean sculptural look that car designers intend in most cases.
quentinberg007 01-31-2005 07:19 PM

I've seen a white 2.5RS around the forums with a cherry blossom red banner. I think the pink looks wonderful on pretty much all colors of the Impreza. I think sedona red and san remo red would be the only colors that I wouldn't like the pink banner.

WRBlueMeanie 01-31-2005 07:46 PM

I don't think its ricey at all if done right. If it's a sponsor logo, SUBARU banner, or Racing/Show team banner I think its ok. If it has nothing to do with your car like "APC" or "Type Racing" or whatever then its very ricey. I've had several banners on my car.

Sorry about the huge pic
AzSandSlinger 01-31-2005 07:56 PM

well.. windshield banners are not my flavor.. but it IS YOUR car, so do with it what you will..

BTW.. I could never get why people put the manufacturer's name as a banner?? a big "SUBARU" banner is kinda rediculous to me.. but then again that's just me.. I'm used to seeing all the mexican rice out here in PHX..

I haven't put it on yet. If you don't get it, you're not cool.

hahahaha, uhhhhhhhh

^^^^^ you = nerd

I don't even know what that is, but I deal with enough math in school (aeronautics). If you put that on your windshield, you will seriously be the coolest person EVER!!!

Jumpy 02-02-2005 01:44 AM

Sorry, one more for rice.
Tucker 02-02-2005 09:34 PM

It's definately rice since it does nothing functional, blocks your view of the road (sky), usually says something retarded like 'APC' or 'TYPE X SUPARFAST RACING', and is even more dumb if it is the only thing done to the car.
Lachlan 02-02-2005 10:31 PM

I had one on my first windshield--it was just the standard "SUBARU" with star symbol in white. I thought it was pretty slick, but now that I look around at other cars with "grand prix" or whatever printed across the top I just think "you had to advertise that?" So I'd say try to refrain if you can.
AlbaScoob 02-03-2005 02:40 PM

I dont get this catagorising of people into rice/non-rice if they put a bloody sticker on their car...land of the free man...do what you want

Did you read the first post by the thread starter? He ASKED people specifically to categorize it as "rice or not."

damn, I knew what it was.

you should make a particular solution to the Schrodinger equation and put it on too.

Course you wouldn't be able to see out :)
Dendrobium 02-03-2005 08:13 PM

Windshield banners can be done functionally: see the WRC tintstrip post here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409406&highlight=tintstrip+project

-- ala WRC 2002

A single vinyl line to replicate the WRC look, + a 20%, low-sight-line tintstrip to block sun-glare, ALL APPLIED FROM the INSIDE of the cabin --

Then, a smaller, vinyl banner on the OUTSIDE applied upon a shortened, opaque black background that blends invisibly into the transparent tintstrip --

Done this way -- my vision is fine night and day. In fact, if I were to do it again, I'd do 5% tint and bring the tintstrip line down even lower to really save my eyes on those glaring summer days ;) The combination windshield banner/dark tintstrip is very functional and gives a lot of sun-glare reducing benefits (as on WRC cars). You can get almost all of the "bling" of a low-sightline 100% opaque windshield banner, but without all the bad side effects (blocked vision esp. at night, windshield wiper interference, etc.) that such a huge, fully opaque banner would normally cause.

cheers!

Lachlan 02-03-2005 08:16 PM

It kind of reminds me of Honduran taxis. Lots of them have giant strips of metallic colored tint on the top and bottom of the windshield and a little strip in the middle to see light out of.

But that one is done much more classy than most of theirs.
fullmonte77 02-03-2005 10:25 PM

Thank you for all your opinions. Alot of people have said it should not be the only mod.It would not be i have 17's,RS hood, clear corners and bumpers custom driving lights, custom red subaru emblem made with help from this forum.Coilovers,RS brakes, slotted rotors, short shifter,CAI,and last but not least custom 2.25" high flow cat pipe, stromung mid pipe and WRX flowmaster axel back.I'am still on the fence as what to do.
twizzstyle 02-03-2005 10:30 PM

dude! Its a GC?! definately do it.... GC Love! :D

only illegal if it comes down past like 4 inches
Daddy_Digital 01-27-2012 11:45 AM

i have the same dilemma. i want to get one but i dont. i think they are functional if it has the strip to block the sun. if its just text, then ur just advertising for Subaru for free with out the functionality.

im also torn on what color i should get it. i know i want a black back ground. but i could get all gold letters since my rims are gold. the other option was the black background with white letters and blue logo. the last one im considering is the world rally blue back ground with yellow letters.
Mr. Me 01-27-2012 01:21 PM

Holy necrothread bump. Almost made it to the 7 year old bump. They were rice in 2005. And if youre wondering, theyre still rice today.
