Bugeye headlight painting questions part 1

JasonCSU 12-16-2003 12:53 AM

Bugeye headlight painting questions
I've searched a few different forums about the DIY headlight mods, but I still have a couple of questions. Using the oven method to loosen the seal, how long do you keep the light in the oven? Also, what kind of paint have you guys used? How many coats did you apply? How long did the whole project take you? Thanks.
Stang2WRX 12-16-2003 01:16 AM

I'd be more afraid of not sealing it back up right...
if moisture gets in there kiss them goodbye.
InfamousDX 12-16-2003 02:41 AM

20 minutes of 225 degrees in the oven I believe?

Dude if there's moisture in there.. you clean it out and reseal it... NOT a big problem.
Rentalpillow7 12-16-2003 03:30 AM

i did a headlight this weekend i did 2 coats of paint. It took me a good while cuz i had to let the paint dry forever since it was raining. Its not a very hard mod. 20 minutes is perfect for the headlights in the oven.

lawn boy 12-16-2003 08:51 AM

did u guys sand down the surface or put down primer before applying the 2 coats of hi temp black paint?
lawn boy 12-16-2003 08:51 AM

also what are some brands of paints u guys used?
migs76 12-16-2003 10:26 AM

didn't sand anything...just masked accordingly, depending on which look you are going for. many, many thin coats > thick coats.
i just used some flat black, hi-temp stuff that can be bought at any pepboys etc. some ppl use semi gloss...just personal preference.
JCampbell 12-16-2003 03:09 PM

I used steel wool to rough up the chrome surface, masked off the turn signal reflector and used Testors ModelMaster gloss black.
It doesn't have to be high temp. paint. Pick what you like, gloss, flat, any color and paint away!
It really was a lot easier than I'd anticipated. I bought the Sylvania diadem (or whatever they're called) bulbs for the turnsignals and it looks great. I mean realllly great.

This mod is probably the most worried about but at the same time easiest mod. First off, invest $25 in a heat gun - easier than the oven 'cuz you can heat up only where you want (read: you burn your hands taking them out of the oven OR you can't freakin' pull them apart 'cuz you got big gloves on). Second, painting this thing is easy. You can use virtually any kind of paint - fact is, that bezel just doesn't see much heat (you are NOT painting the immediate surround of the headlight bulbs and the heat dissipates quickly). Number of coats is unimportant, just go thin and stop when the color looks right. Third, re-assembly is nothing to worry about. Use the heat gun to soften the adhesive that's still there. Then, invest $5 in an exterior grade black silicon sealant, cut a very small nozzle and run an additional bead all the way around, and re-assemble. I've done this 3 times and have had absolutely NO signs of moisture. Fourth, just remember to keep the inside of the lens clean before you put it back together, especially from the gooey sealant during dis/re-assembly.

Thank you and good night-

Thanks for the info sonicblue. I'm just debating the pattern that I want to paint it now. Like your's, outlined, or like this...
streetspanker 12-17-2003 01:26 AM

i put mine in the oven for about 18 min i believe. just watch your hands on the hot plastic. i only pulled out my amber bulb covers and put them back together cause i didnt like the black look on a WRB car. now i have eyelids and cf sidemarkers and STi solid fog covers and i think it looks pretty good

taking the amber out is technically illegal in some states, but it does look really cool. esp. if you have clear or cf sidemarkers.

note: i think phillips makes a bulb that looks clear but still lights up yellow that fits in that socket.

pm me for pics if you like.

allanak 12-17-2003 02:34 AM

I followed koji's instructions (you can search) with the exception of the PVC piping since I didnt have any hehe. I still think it looks good nonetheless.
Take everything off the back of the lights and the few screws that hold it together. Oven @ 200 degrees for 20 minutes, pull em apart. Unscrew the silver housing, take out those ugly orange plastic pieces, and paint a few light coats (i used flat black high-temp paint from Pep Boys) until it was the color I wanted. and replaced stock turn signals with some APC (please don't flame lol) silver bulbs that flash orange, also available at Pep Boys. Put one light at a time with the two seperate pieces almost together, but dont pop in the clips just yet. Back in the oven to reheat the silicon and then press and hold the two pieces together so the silicon holds. Don't be scared, it's easy! Enjoy one of the best free mods out there :disco:

I think it'd only be illegal if you don't put an amber bulb back in.
I think they are called Sylvania SilverVision... something like that. I got mine at Advanced Autoparts. ~$20 pair and they really look good.
From what I hear the APC bulbs work well too.

MOD ON!!
STI 2 NV 12-17-2003 09:10 AM

i used a heat gun to get mine apart. i didn't use high temp paint. didn't use it when i blacked out the my headlights in my old civic and had absolutely no problems. used the heat gun to seal them back up and then went around the entire light with a small layer of silicon. i ended up getting morettes and have a bunch of people that wanted my blackened headlights so i gave them to a buddy. it's been months and he has yet to see any problems.
_mo_ 12-17-2003 12:10 PM

has anyone painted the housing to match the car body color? anyone do WRB? pics?

mo
sonicblue 12-17-2003 03:32 PM

_mo_: I seriously wanted to do WRB but decided that the glare of the clear lens would prevent the color from matching by a long shot. I did see a guy who did it in San Remo Red and it looked OK, but not great (IMO). I think my graphite is a great compromise, especially with WRB. It's a dark color but not black - it has just enough contrast to catch your eye. Of course, I've now tinted them dark with VHT, so you can't see it as much, but oh well.........
JasonCSU 12-17-2003 04:16 PM

Has anyone done a graphite or gunmetal color with Platinum Silver?
migs76 12-17-2003 09:17 PM

ppl have colormatched. not my steez but to each their own.
John Sever 12-17-2003 10:42 PM

hmmmm, I think I might try a WRB top to simulate a JUN eyelid and a black bottom...screw it. If it looks like trash i'll do it all black.

I'll be painting my lights a gunmetal color over the holiday break. I'll be sure to post pics when done.
jcdeng 12-18-2003 02:28 PM

I am not very good with handy work, but this looked simple as you guys put it and very tempting (better than the 900 dollor edm, I can get the looks and a turbo back ). :D

Just wondering, is there a special tape to use for the masking of the bulb housing and techique on how to mask it perfectly (if any)

Thanks guys (and girls)
atf78 12-18-2003 02:40 PM

Some good quality masking tape should be perfect for the job IMO.

make sure you check local laws. here we are allowed to have any shade of turn signal between white and orange/amber

Actually, they were so good, I sold them! I did the mod to another set but also tinted them. I like it but I'm going back to stock for a potential sale. These are for sale in return for your stock lights:

BTW, if anyone wants me to do this mod to their lights, I'm more than willing, Koji included. If you're not local, as long as you can find another ride for a few days, you can ship 'em to me. I've done 3 sets now and it's a half-day job. But buy my tinted ones!
Sith_Lord 12-23-2003 12:30 PM

Sonic- those look damn good! I thought I was being original because I did mine the same way- ah well.

I had a fog light blub expolde in the housing. It left a foggy residue on the lens. I tried cleaning it out with a bendy kitchen tool, but it didn't work. I ended up unsealing in, cleaning it with glass cleaner and then resealed it. The over will get rid of any moisture simply by turning it to steam and letting it rise in the oven.

Start your headlight mod research here:

http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7600&perpage=40&pagenumber=4

The .jpg posted earlier by Jason is my WRX. SonicBlue, Koji, Tubbytreats all are good examples.

Jason,

Make sure all scews are out prior to heating up.

250 degrees for 12-15min (only!, 15 is good 20 is way too long).

Have a couple pairs of oven mits ready to go as it's a lot easier with someone else helping you.

Once hot pull the two halves apart QUICKLY (think of what happens to cheese on a pizza if you pull it slowly-avoid that at all cost). This is where most people make a mistake and have a difficult time removing adhesive from parts of the headlight assembly where it shouldn't be-not fun.

I suggest just about any semi-gloss black paint.

Do not prep the surface to be painted. At the factory Subaru did a nice job of keeping the parts very clean and it does not require a prep to get the paint to stick.

Once you decide on how you want your lights to look...use only the blue painters tape when masking as it will not leave any adhesive residue behind.

Now to make some comments on Tubbytreats suggestions (at the wrx fanatics link above) that should help a bit more:

At Step 3:

#4) I used a cookie sheet and 'baked' mine with the lens facing up and NOT using a towel in the oven (just wasn't necessary and a bit safer).

5) I originally followed Koji's suggestion of 250 degrees at 15 min. and that has always worked like a charm for all 6 pairs of headlights that I have painted.

7) A very important step to remember. Some have been pulling while forgetting a 'latch' and then the light cools off too much. Heat / pry latches / pull apart QUICKLY.

10) Another good place to make a mistake. While pulling the chrome plastic piece out of the assembly it's very possible to get silicone adhesive on the outer edge of it and it's near impossible to remove! Wait about 10 minutes for it to adequately cool. Once the adhesive isn't as plyable it won't be so easy to stick to everything.
Also when you are ready to reheat the headlight pieces for reassembly you will need to completely rebuild the headlight (including the silicone adhesive you have added on top of the factory stuff) BUT not press the two halves together just yet. You will press them together but that last 1/4" you will press after you have reheated the assembly in the oven to soften the factory silicone adhesive. Then you are ready to push together that last little bit for a great seal.

At Step 4 (PVC):
Tubbytreats PVC piece didn't look like mine. I didn't have the flange at the end and I didn't have such a big flange on the inside of the piece I found. PM me for details as I forget Home Depots SKU #).

2) I have tried sanding and not sanding and NOT sanding is hands down the most OEM looking way to go (don't worry the paint sticks just fine-I used an alcohol wipe only).

One step I took further was to cut the tip off the factory orange turn signal reflector cover and shove it down the PVC bushing for that real projector look.

PM me if you have any questions.

Good luck,

Drew

I sold my headlights to someone so I could do the mod again.

My headlights were the first I have done and although I get a lot of compliments on them I have gotten better at it and wanted it to be perfect.

In fact I'm doing it this weekend, probably Sun. I'll keep the digicam close by and take pics. It's been done to death but I don't mind. I'll have to e-mail them to you afterward as I'm having problems with my pic hosting site.

Black-X 01-13-2004 12:00 AM

here's a crappy pic of mine, dirty as all hell.

if you do the headlight mod, i definatly think you should do the amber turn signal mod too. looks too good not to!

Not sure which clips you mean, but the short answer is, you need no new parts (unless you add the PVC piece) to do this mod.
