Can you post a more straight on look without the angle. Looks pretty decent in the top pic
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 10:13 AM |
here's a more straight on shot, kinda close though.

Would you mind posting some info on how you did that?
| r8r4life | 08-01-2006 10:28 AM |
Where did you get the screen that you used.
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 10:33 AM |
I don't have pictures of it when I was doing it, but it's fairly straight forward, it just takes a lot of time. First you have to remove the three grill pieces. each of them is actually a three piece element and just break them down into the components. Then use a dremel and cut out the old plastic grill. I got the new mesh from http://www.mcmaster.com, you can choose which ever opening shape you want. Get some dupli-color spray paint (flat black for me) from autozone or pepboys. cut the mesh into correct shapes and test fir everything first, then go crazy with the paint. You can use the spray paint for the trim pieces too, but you have to sand down everything first and prime it, since it'll be in all kinds of weather. If you want to know how i painted the piece and center support in detail, let me know.

oh, i did the scoop and the lower radiator openings too.

I'm looking at the wire mesh available on McMaster, do you know the specs of the mesh that you bought?

thumbs up for creativity and execution
just not sure how I feel about it

Thanks, and if this wasn't obvious by all of my questions, I think it looks really good, and that you did a great job!
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 11:10 AM |
thanks man! just make sure to take your time when you do it :)

I bought my meshabout 4 months ago from Home Depot, Gutter guard, its 7 dollars for like 7 sheets.. Looks like the same style, only its silver.

really? i didn't know that, are they big enought to cover the center grill (that was one of the reasons i got it from mcmaster)?
| dodiox | 08-01-2006 11:32 AM |
its nice... it still needs some work.
can you take better pics of the car modeling outside so we can see how its looks.

I believe it is.. I almost seems like it would be a perfect fit length wise.. It would need to be trimmed down width wise though. lol
When I can finally get it done, ill post pics.

I was also thinking about getting an "i" badge for the center, what does everyone think?

I think that would look great, the centre grille just needs something. It looks too plain without a badge.

I'm guessing you ordered just one sheet and was able to do it all with that piece?? Also, if you could elaborate on how this was done that would be awesome, I was looking to debadge the front/rear of the car, but when the grill emblem was built with the circle around it I gave up on the idea... now I'm second guessing that. Deff looks nice.
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 02:56 PM |
I sorta gave a explaination in a few posts up. But essentially, you just have to take out the three trim pieces and break down everything so you can use a dremel to cut out the plastic grill. After that you are free to do whatever you want to do with it.
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 02:57 PM |
should I get pink of blue
| Soups06TR | 08-01-2006 03:18 PM |
I'll have to spend sometime in the 110 degree heat to check it out this afternoon, it looks really nice and is what I wanted to do with it anyways, glad you resparked this idea in my head. Also, the roll of gutter guard isn't going to be wide enough, but if he has sheets of it, it'll work just as well, looks like I'll be swinging by home depot to get me some, if not, I've bookmarked it on that site. Thanks again, looks good
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 03:33 PM |
yeah, I like the symetrical honey comb pattern better from mcmaster.
| Vlad the Sailor | 08-01-2006 04:07 PM |
how abouts some Hella Supertones to fill in that grill?
| gte123v | 08-01-2006 05:05 PM |
I thought of that too, but two red circles right in the middle might look kinda weird.
| Handsdown | 08-01-2006 06:51 PM |
hmm...
interesting but i honestly don't understand why people are trying to make it look like a single grill...
tying the grill together makes the hood, lights, and bumper lines all look really screwy. interesting idea but i think it looks better stock.

| vwown3d | 08-07-2006 08:54 AM |
hmm, i hate how it shows ur hood latch ready for theives to pop it right open. otherwise +1 for creativity, i kinda like it
| gte123v | 08-07-2006 03:02 PM |
yeah, i need to think of someway to cover that up

wow, that grillcraft one is almost $300 for upper and lower!
| Soups06TR | 08-08-2006 10:09 AM |
I did mine this past weekend with the metal mesh at Home Depot. Definitely a pain to do, how did you go about making the the places where you cut the original plastic look smooth?? Just a sanding bit on the dremel??
| gte123v | 08-08-2006 10:26 AM |
yeah, used the dremel to sand away most of the leftover material and then sanded it smooth by hand. Then I primed it and painted it flat black, but make sure you sand between each coat with like 1500 grid paper for smoothness.
| iamchris | 08-08-2006 10:33 AM |
Sorry, not much of a fan. Too empty and it lets you see the latch which isn't very pretty.
Also, it is GRILLE! A "grill" is something you cook hamburgers on. I haaaate the internet!

I had the flash on when I took the pictures, which shines all the way through, but normally during the day, you can't really see anything behind the GRILLE (thanks for the correction).
| iamchris | 08-08-2006 10:44 AM |
Ah well then if you couldn't see it, *thumbs up* Plans for supertones?
*edit* whoops, just read above. paint 'em black?

| gte123v | 08-08-2006 10:50 AM |
^yeah, probably do it when I clear the headlights. Don't want to keep ripping it out, which was a bitch.
| iamchris | 08-08-2006 10:56 AM |
Yeah, I have repeatedly broke the clips on my Saabaru when installing 2 sets of supertones on different occasions :( Damn glue won't hold!
| ZACKARU | 08-08-2006 11:37 AM |
I think it would look a lot better if you did not have the black paint connecting the three together, if you left them seperate it would look much better. And no flash taking the picture. Other than that, sweet DIY mod, very clever.
| gte123v | 08-08-2006 12:10 PM |
thanks man, I think I'll buy a blue i badge and see how that turns out.
| RexisMe | 08-08-2006 09:35 PM |
n/m... nice.
| gte123v | 08-11-2006 09:05 AM |
I just ordered some hella supertones, and they will sit right in the middle. I hope it'll look good!
| BuggeyEYED | 08-11-2006 09:09 AM |

| VTSubieRS | 08-20-2006 12:36 AM |

yup, put the hellas in couple days ago, looks totally awesome now. I need to take new pictures. It showed everything behind it b/c the flash was on when I took the picture, normally it's just all black.
| Dhcheckeracer | 08-20-2006 02:49 AM |
did mine as soon as i got my car a couple months ago.. went with a silver mesh tho.. my cars sgm and it looks nice with the silver.. if i had hellas in their it would like sickk!..but with the silver it makes it not see through so you cant see your radiator..makes it look a little more cleaner if i say so myself

That's definitely hot. Might be a dumb question, but after cutting out the factory stuff, how do you get the mesh to stay on the grill?
