My WRC lip project (lots of pics inside)

l'aunsport WRC lip install:
Thanks to darioc for giving me his l'aunsport lip to work with. First off, I was a bit disappointed (as I'm sure darioc was) with the actual package. The lip itself is a high quality neoprene (think body glove surf diving or scuba diving suit). However, it is just a BIG ROLL coiled up (think BIG cinnamon roll). The installation instructions are in japanese, I had someone translate and all they really mean to do is:
1. Clean surface.
2. Stick on with tape.
3. Apply screws along bottom.

here's a cross-section of the lip's shape:

I personally did not want to screw TONS of little self-tapping screws into my wagon bumper (the kit comes with about 20-30 screws!) I also did not want to stick it on ONLY with tape for fear of it flying off at speed/getting hit/tape wearing out. I DID want to keep the lip though as the rubber looks very good on the car, and I would think is pretty durable and should hold up to abuse (besides, also easy to repair with liquid silicone rubber if it gets damaged!)
So, I decided to fashion a rugged, sturdy, "under-lip" that would do the following:
1. Fully support the l'aunsport lip from UNDERNEATH
- to keep it from deforming at speed
- to keep the lip pressed into place
2. Use ALL factory mounting points with NO additional holes needed to be drilled.
Here's what I did - LOTS 'o' pics! to follow!
1. I traced the underbody of the wagon, including all mounting points.

2. I found a very tough, stiff, and durable mudflap material from the local autoparts store in pieces big enough for my application. I could not have asked for a tougher material (super hard, ABS plastic approx 1/8" thick)
Here's the tough ABS mudflap material I found along with the completed underbody trace:

3. Went about cutting, dremeling, drilling, and sanding until the pieces matched my underbody trace exactly.
grinding mess..

phew! tada, pieces are done!

The side pieces overlap one another for added strength, and the holes mount to stock body mount points

4. I wanted to keep things light as possible (don't want tons of heavy, rusting bolts down there!) so I found a bunch of super strong (but light) nylon bolts complete with finishing washers at the local Home Depot:

The concave surface allows for better contact and screw-head to washer engagement as the under lip ANGLES DOWNWARDS to support the l'aunsport lip. BONUS: these particular "slotted" screws EXACTLY fit a penny's side, so all you need to tighten them is a penny!

5. Filling the dip...
darioc noticed this problem right away I'm sure. WRX's (wagons and sedans) have a front bumper which is NOT straight across -- there is a prolonged "dip" section in the middle of the two foglight cavities. Rather than try to conform to the "dip" section, I wanted a clean install, so I filled the gap with high-tack foam weather-strippping from Home Depot. This way, the l'aunsport would have something to adhere to and the resulting lip would look clean, and go straight across just like on the WRC car (and the prodrive lip)
Applying the weather stripping:

6. Apply the lip carefully using the supplied tape. For others attempting this install, make sure to WASH the l'aunsport lip and to let it dry completely before applying the tape. Mine came with a white chalky powder on it (probably to prevent it from sticking to itself). Such powder would NOT be conducive to the supplied adhesive tape. Also, after you wash it, you will realize how nice the neoprene rubber is - it's surface is actually fully coated rubber so the surface is
smooth - no bubbles.
Here's the lip applied:

goes awesome with UNPAINTED sideskirts and ties the side and front of the car together nicely!

Close-up of the dip in the center of the bumper -- yay! straight across! :D -- the weather stripping filled in the "dip" perfectly:

7. Now, here's the best part - the underlip. I applied all four pieces, and because I used the template trace that I made earlier, they fit perfectly. The nylon screws are very strong, and have a small amount of compliance built into them so they confrom well to bends and angles (in this case the downward angle of the l'aunsport lip).
Here you can see the underlip attached with the nylon nuts and bolts. VERY sturdy -- and light too!

8. Finishing touches? I painted the nylon screws black to match the underbody, and added small thin 3M reflectors to match this WRC pic:

So far, the lip has stayed on VERY firmly in pouring rain doing 100+ km/h highway drives.
Hope this helps anyone contemplating the l'aunsport lip, and hope you enjoyed the write-up! Thanks again darioc for the lip! Too bad you don't live near me or else I would have helped to install it for you! ;)
cheers,

I dig what you did with the lip. Great install, very thorough, and it definitely looks the part. My one and only gripe is the fact that you can see the weather stripping in the "dip."
I understand that the lip couldn't have filled in the dip. But, if I were you, I think I would have bought another mudflap or something, cut it to fit, and then place it in the dip to cover the weather stripping. I don't how you would affix it, but that's just what I would do.
Great job overall, though. Very well done.

Nice writeup. I had the impression that the L'aunsport lip is thicker than that.
Dendrobium, are those 3M reflectors the ScotchLite tape variety, or a different type?
For those who contemplate a neoprene lip (be it this L'aunsport or the Home Depot variety), here's how it might look if you skip the "filling the dip" process and just let it arc.
Another note, although mine is the DIY variety, the material is also neoprene; and I can say that neoprene is quite suitable for this purpose. It has withstood quite a few curbs, parking lot on/off ramps as well as several road debris impact.

** Orson
OT: PM'd you about your request.
**ButtDyno:
- thanks - I do have gold bling blings (superlegs) but my winter wheels/tires are on in this pic ;) cuz it's that time of year again.
**O2R6
- I did think about that initially, but ended up using the weather stripping since it is flexible enough to conform to the 3D contours of the "dip". Cutting a piece to fit would be hard to get right I think - particularly at the edges where it meets the curved surfaces of the bumper but yes, I agree I think it can be done.
BTW - I think it *MAY* actually be easier to fill the WRX wagon bumper's "dip" as opposed to the sedan bumper's "dip".
** satyra
Your neoprene lip actually inspired me to do mine :D The reflectors are 3M Scotchlite tape variety, cut to shape and contoured to the lip using a hair dryer.

Problem is that at this time of year - it's dark when I leave work, and it's dark by the time I get home
Perhaps I'll go to a nice lighted parkade or wait till the weekend.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm actually surprised that Scotchlite would adhere to the flexible neoprene. I know they stick very well on plastic (like the polycarbonate shells used in RC Cars), but I would've expected the Scotchlite to peel off of the neoprene under slight weather exposure. I'm also surprised that the neoprene didn't wilt/melt/deform when you heated the Scotchlite.

Neoprene? Not Urethane?

Dendrobium:
I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but is the lip really neoprene?
The sheets of paper on the first photo you posted (re-attached below for reference) seems to mention "Urethane Lip" several times. Items # 2, 4, 5, & 6 have that phrase. It also appears again on line 4 of the lower right corner text.

no worries! that's what this forum is for - to discuss hehe :)
BTW - u have tremendous eyes! I also guess that you can read katakana in a pinch!
Perhaps it is urethane -- I'm by no means a materials expert. The reason I thought it was neoprene was because the cross section definitely looks like a "foam cell structure" that reminds me of the scuba suits I wear when diving.
Then again, for such a piece, it is rather beefy and firm - feeling (not as light and compliant as neoprene) and does not get wet / soak up water like neoprene can sometimes.
About the tape - good question - in fact the 3M tape I used is actually 3M vinyl that people use to make their mailboxes more visible. it sticks surprisingly well (but not enough to make me worry that I'll rip off pieces of the lip with it) Also, you can always heat it gently to remove it.
About the melting - I hear you - it's a valid concern but I meant that I only "gently" heated/warmed it with a common household hair-dryer, not a commercial grade heatgun  that would surely melt the lip, the 3M vinyl, my bumper, and worst of all - my hand! ;)
cheers!

It helps to be able to read a few characters for those parts or catalogs, considering where most of the interesting parts & info come from.

Does it look as porous as this up close? This is the neoprene I used (it says neoprene on the packaging iirc). It hardly absorbs any water, and the front & back surfaces are quite smooth.

If the material is stiffer than the neoprene I used, then I suppose it would stick quite all right. The mudflap splitter you added below them would probably help too.

I too think that the P1's look better, but I wanted the weight savings of the superlegs ;)
the 3M vinyl you should be able to find at your local auto parts / home hardware store. We have a chain of stores here called "Canadian Tire" that carries them - probably equivalent to a hybrid of your auto-zone / pep-boys/ home-depot all in one.
**satrya
My lip is like that. - BUT more dense (bubbles are much smaller) I'll take a better X-section pic tonight.
It's like this analogy:
your neoprene: AERO chocolate bubbles
my neoprene/urethane?: CRUNCHIE bar (the "crunchie" gold foam internals)

Iirc, Dendrobium got it from another member, darioc, who bought it through japanparts.com (Dendrobium, darioc, correct me if I'm wrong). I don't know of any distributors in north america that carry L'aunsport parts in stock. I believe it is a special order.
There's also the significantly less expensive DIY option which Dendrobium and myself discussed a few threads up:

answers to some questions..

**silent_rob95:
This particular lip is indeed available from japanparts.com
**Others:
As promised, here's some more zoomed out shots (sorry, as I said it's always dark now, so I used a bright supermarket as backdrop, and
the pics are a bit blurry as I shrunk them down alot since this thread is already so pic-heavy):

and.. here's some better idea of what the lip material is like: I would say it probably is a urethane rubber. It is very much the same material as the prodrive urethane mudflaps - but a softer grade, but still very tough.

Here's what it looks like when I exert a fair amount of pressure on it - it deforms.. but not by as much as you would think:

hope that answers everyone's questions and thanks for the comments! ;)

Now, if some enterprising person would just come out with a $35 template and fastener kit to bundle with those lips...
| Dendrobium | 11-23-2003 03:44 PM |
sdwrx - is that a hint? ;)
Seriously though - the nylon fasteners are readily available at Home Depot's extensive nuts/bolts aisle, while the weather stripping is readily available in many different widths at H/W stores.
The "effort" part is fashioning a supporting "under-lip" -- tracing your underbody shape and mount points accurately, and finding enough material to make one.
Perhaps "fastline" (the guy who makes mudflaps) has a source for lots of this material, and would be willing to make underbody spoiler kits. (maybe he could even find a cheap, flexible urethane lip source so we don't have to shell out for the l'aunsport one)
cheers,

Thanks to Dendrobium for all the tips. Got mine in today. I also used ABS in conjunction w/ the urethane lip, but I managed to find a wholesale out fit that sold it by 8'X4'-unfortunately it would cost a fortune to ship that size (freight only). They cut into four pieces (2'X4') and shipped it UPS. I used 3/32, black w/ a rough side and a smooth side. I cut three pieces and overlapped them. One thing I did different was I also used a piece of ABS on top- forming a straight edge between the section that curves upwards. I used the existing holes in this section, but then used spacers (actually pretty short) around the nylon bolts to make it rigid and keep it straight. I put the smooth side up and there is a small gap between the top ABS piece and the curved out section. Kind of similar (but shorter) to the Subaru front splitter.

Too bad you don't live near me or else I would have helped to install it for you! ;)
cheers,

Thats not a reflector. Its actualy its own mini skid plate and it is mounted to the lip what is made entirely out of carbonfiber and extends like 2 feet back under the car. Nevertheless I like how the lip turned out.

Thought I would bump this old thread since I tend to get a lot of PM's about it.
Here's the original l'aunsport rubber lip (that I got from darioc) that this project was based upon:
(look up part #104-001-003 via www.japanparts.com)

You can find similiar rubber lip materials "on the cheap" from your local home depot.
Other manufacturers have since joined the home depot "indestructible lip craze" and are selling their own overpriced rolls of black rubber material:

honestly you could done it for like less than $10 buying the lip from home depot, is the door seal thingy. I did it to my old cf vlip replica and was replacing it everytime it scrapped off. Atleast i prevented the lip from being scraped on the bottom. here is a pic of it:
