Dakar Rally Starts Today

Looks like Robby Gordon started off right, winning the first "spectator stage" on the beach in Barcelona, in the VW Touraeg. I guess his Baja experience is paying off so far. McRae finished 8th (I think). The young US bike competitors also got off to a good start.

I'm glad to see the increase in popularity this year.
In a time that auto racing is turning into a panty-waisting beauty show, it's nice to see a competition truely push against nature.

I hope you are right about it being more popular this year. I don't see much evidence of that, though, at least not here in the US. It's a shame, it's one of the coolest events in all of motorsports. And it comes at a time when there is really nothing else going on. For that reason alone you'd think it'd get more TV play. Even many WRC fans here seem to be somewhat indifferent about it, though. Beats me.

There are 20% more entrants this year. It is more popular.

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant in terms of viewership, fan popularity. Got it.

Meantime, for anyone who wants a fix, there is a pretty good music-mix video of Dakar 2004, I believe it was done by Guidothepenguin but not certain. I think rallyplanet has it...yep they do, but I have not registered there so I can't put up the link. I have it on my HD but that isn't going to do any of you any good. Anyone else have a link for dakar2004.mpeg?

some of you should try reading previous posts.
My fav motor race to watch.
That's cool Robby won one so early. I hope he does good.
American Kellon Walch on the KTM is in 5th on the bikes after stage 1.
Edit: It looks like Dr. WOT is correct on the 22nd. Start time is showing 9:30pmest.

Here's a little update:
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) January 1, 2005, 11:18 AM EST (16:18 GMT) -- NASCAR driver Robby Gordon won the opening leg of the Dakar Rally on Friday, the first American to capture a stage in the car division of the world's most grueling road race.
Gordon, driving a Volkswagen in his first Dakar Rally, covered a 4-mile sprint along a beach outside Barcelona in 4 minutes, 20 seconds. He was two seconds ahead of Hiroshi Masuoka of Japan, and Giniel De Villiers of South Africa was third, another second behind. Defending champion Stephane Peterhansel of France was ninth.
Interesting!

McRae wins today's short stage, Gordon 5th, not far back. (Looks like McRae and some of the regulars got "motivated" after being upstaged by a lowly "oval guy".) Gordon now in second overall behind McRae.

I'd agree, and add the 24 hrs of Nurburgring to the list.
I'd go so far as to say that Isle of Man is the single most amazing event in all of motorsports in terms of sheer danger level and courage required to attack it competitively. That course is narrow, slick, undulating, twisy, and most amazing of all, STONE WALLS all around most of the course. It's an appropriately named event...you have to be a hell of a man to attack that course.

They won't show Dakar, one of the biggest motorsports events in the world, because it's "too esoteric". But hey looky, bobsledding is on all afternoon today. Yippee. Wuhu.
Bodine manufactures the sleds....I wonder if that's why they carry it?

Ain't that the truth! These are by far the two most exciting motor racing events in the world, bar none!
I've been following the Isle of Man, on and off since the mid 1960s, when Mike ("Mike the Bike") Hailwood and Giacomo Agostini had their epic battles. Now that it's on TV, it's even more incredible. For those not familar with those names, check the following links:

Looks like McRae is sitting along side Tina Thorner. McRae came out like gangbusters today on the special stages. I'm still amazed how much McRae likes Dakar considering all the badmouthin he gave the East African Safari rally (dust, heat, people, yada).
Nice to see Robby Gordon participating. Wonder what made him think about trying this.

Wow, Gordon just won the first African stage in Morocco, by 1:08", distance was 123 km. I don't see any news about McRae yet....but the first cars have just now crossed the finish.
The stage was cancelled for bikes due to heavy fog.
From dakar.com:
14:39 Cars Gordon wins special
Robby Gordon (VW n317) has just clocked the fastest time of the day's 123km special between Rabat and Agadir. The US driver managed a time of 1h14'01" beating Peterhansel (MIT n306) by 53" and Saby (VW n307) at 1'08". Gordon conquers the new overall lead ahead of Peterhansel, 1min adrift.
14:38 Cars Gordon fastest at CP2
At CP2 (km 88) Robby Gordon has the fastest time in 24'05". Second is Peterhansel (MIT n306) at 1'05". Third is Alphand (MIT n311) at 1'57".
14:37 Cars Gordon best time at CP1
Robby Gordon (VW n317) has the new best time at CP1. He leads by 19sec on Peterhansel (MIT- n306). Third is Luc Alphand (MIT n312) at 1'26". Seven competitors have made it at CP1.

Robby Gordon is a 'real racer'. Not one of those left-turn-only knuckleheads.
He'll race anything with wheels, on just about any surface. CART, IRL, Baja, SCORE,
NASCAR, ice racing, even bikes I think.

His buddy Ryan Aciero has done it before a couple of times, (doing it again this year in production class, now in 55th place overall), and Gordon has wanted to do it for a long while. It is tough to fit into the schedule though, takes a lot of time to do, at a time of the year when teams are preparing for upcoming seasons. Red Bull is who hooked him into it this year since they have sponsor pull with the VW team, and marketing reach into the USA is important to them. It is also important to VW, so the execs loved the idea. I'm not convinced the VW motorsports team guys loved the idea...I get the feeling that Jutta Kleinschmidt, and even the team director Nissen are not happy about being handed an American newcomer, especially one that was showing well right off the bat. I think it was Nissen who slowed Gordon down today under orders, he was fastest at CP1. Not certain about it, but sure feels like it, even though he would never say it.
Here is what he did say:
Additional quotes from Robby Gordon via satellite phone after stage five
Tell us about your Dakar experience so far:
This is by far the toughest thing I have done in my life. This makes the logistics from doing the Double Duty (Indy 500/Coca Cola 600) look simple. The organization, the time requirements and the stamina of everybody involved is unbelievable. I pitched a tent about a half hour ago. I have not done that since I was a kid. Im in a tent for the next two nights. Everyday we just throw away our socks and underwear thanks Fruit of the Loom. I also get to take a cold shower for the next couple of days, but at least its a shower.
How was stage five?
We got beat today. It was my first time with the Touareg in the rocks and I have not raced on that type of surface for along time. It reminded me of the Mint 400 (off-road race in Las Vegas). It was about 100 miles of slate rock and very challenging. We were not going slow we still beat the motorcycles by about 30 minutes which is huge. We aired on the side of caution and it might have been too conservative but some of the favorites had problems out there and we came through unscathed.
Whats in store for the next couple of days?
The next couple of days are survival days. I dont think I will even see the service trucks tomorrow. Stage six starts out on gravel and then transitions into the dunes. We will actually have to get out of the truck and drop the tire pressures when we get to the dunes. Im hoping all the time that Ive spend at Glamis pays off. I think we should be good but you dont know until you know.
For now we will just survive and we will get back to racing in stage eight. Everyday is another day I get more comfortable with the Touaregs. Trust me, there is still plenty of time left.
Stage Six Preview
Drivers skilled at dune crossing and navigating will here be in their element (Think Glamis!) But for the 40% of new entrants in the motorcycle category, it is in arriving in Mauritania that the real Dakar experience will begin.
After 100 km of track liaison to the Mauritanian border, competitors will start the Special with a very fast section on sandy ground.
This will be followed by mainly speedy stretches punctuated by spaced out dune fields, as far as 1 km apart.
Assistance vehicles will take the special route on 100 km.

OK just saw this, some great pics on this site from today. Among them, a few things I have never seen: Long-travel-suspension-big-tires versions of a Renault Megane, Peugeot 206, and Seat Toledo. Also an old Citroen. Wild. Makes me want to try that with an WRX Wagon or Forrester or something.

Robby crashed as well. As far as I can tell, he's still in it, but a few hours behind.

w00t! Only a few days in, and things are starting to heat up.
McRae was my favorite, but had that bad crash. :(
Hope to see good OLN coverage too!

Outdoor Life Network.
I just wish they had some ongoing coverage. Their Tour de France coverage has been pretty good, I'd like to see something similar for Dakar.

Yeah, the tour coverage has been exceptional. I'm interested to see how things change this year with the Discovery Channel sponsorship of the former USPS squad.
I got an update from OLN about the Dakar coverage in Canada, it's been changed to 9:30 pm from 10pm. Previous post has been edited

yeah this not showing of the Dakar from start to finish like they did in past years really sucks. I love WRC and rally. I love Raids. Raids are a long tradition in my family since i was a lil kid. My father worked for Peugeot of America while i grew up and we were always surrounded by cool things like these.
Speed is not doin well for the other fans of different motorsports other than ASSCAR.
