Unofficial Press Release: One Lap of America - Luke Russell
Luke Russell, Turbo XS, Subaru of America, Rota Wheels and Safe Drives team-up to race in the One Lap of America.

Its that time again. Spring is upon us. Time to plant flowers, do home improvements, enjoy the great outdoors. Or, in my case, jump into a race car and drive it practically non-stop for 8 days. Then spend the rest of Spring recuperating. In 2003, when I completed the One Lap in 12th place, the car shook me so bad for 11 days straight that I jokingly told everyone I was going to end up w/ shaken baby syndrome (I know, sick joke). Instead, I just ruptured my lung and got a nasty case of emphysema. But after a couple emergency room visits, about a pound of coughed up blood clots, and an unfortunate self-enema episode (dont ask) - I was ready to race again. Unfortunately, I couldnt pull things together quickly enough for 2004 w/ the purchase of a new STi, so I set my sites on 2005.

Since that time, we have been busy assembling the car in my garage, making a couple treks to Turbo XS, and doing track days. I was able to drive 5 of the tracks on the schedule this year. I also plan on hitting Roebling Road and Beaverun one more time. Modifications to the car are typical bolt on goodies, nothing too fancy: TXS UTEC, TXS Turbo Back Exhaust, TXS Wideband AFR Tuner, Greddy Profec Electronic Boost Control, TXS Front Mount Intercooler, reverse hood scoop, TXS Intake, 800 cc injectors, 255 lph fuel pump, FP Green Turbo, proper gauges, 17 x 8 Rota Torque wheels, Carbotech FP8/9 Brake Pads, Goodrich Stainless Steel Lines, custom ordered race spec JIC Coilovers w/ camber plates, Hotchkis competition sway bar kit, 245 Michelin Pilot PS2 tires, Full Roll Cage, Recaro Pole Position seats, G-Force Harnesses and a MOMO race spec steering wheel. Were tuned to run up to 24 psi of boost on C16 fuel, all tuned for monster torque.

Thanks to my sponsors and to nasioc members who I have stolen many a good idea from. And my co-driver, Mike McInturf, who helped me assemble the car. And to the grooviest wife ever, Brianna, who continues to let me play w/ cars. Ill attempt to update during the event, but more than likely will do a summary like last time. Late.

So does the car have a Green or a 20G?
lukerussell 03-24-2005 04:18 PM

cut and paste error. i edited it. it's a green.
trhoppe 03-24-2005 04:19 PM

Kick some bootay!

But please throw some 275s on ;)

lukerussell 03-24-2005 04:34 PM

Enrique - that car is sick. Us STi guys should definetely team up. Although, IMO, I don't think the Shiv Evo is showing up. I'm most worried about the World Challenge Bimmerworld car that's entered.

Tom - I did steal most of the ideas I got from nasioc from you. So if I flame, it's your fault. Ha. I was all scared putting 245's on w/ the Rotas, the 225 stock rubber looked so close to the JIC's. Ends up there is all kinds of room. Should've at least gone w/ 255's. PS2's have the softest sidewall ever. I'll see how they work out at Roebling this weekend. I may have to stretch the old credit card and make a last second swap.

If anyone cares, the car is still a stout 3155 lbs. Porker. 1/2 tank of gas and me not in it. It's stripped to the point that any other stripping would require cutting torches. I'm sure the cage added 150 lbs. +. And P.S. don't ever take apart that plastic disc looking thing that sits behind the stock steering wheels. I popped it off and a mile of ribbon w/ wire in it shot out all over the car. It took me an hour to put it back together.

awesome!! question though..why not use the stock wheels? they are lighter and the same size

sweet. give me a couple sessions to get used to the car. i haven't driven it since the roll cage (no vision), new seats and low seating position, new steering wheel and position, new tires and new sway bars. It will be like driving a new car for the very first time.
lukerussell 03-24-2005 06:48 PM
awesome!! question though..why not use the stock wheels? they are lighter and the same size
good question. the '04 STi came w/ 7.5", unless i'm wrong. The 245's didn't quite fit how i wanted them. i get more footprint w/ the 8" rotas. They weigh about 2 - 3 lbs. more, but i think it's a good trade off, especially if i switch to 255's. btw, the 245 ps2's weigh 3 lbs. less than the 225 stock potenzas.

skuttledude 03-24-2005 06:50 PM

Luke, sounds like you are ready to go!
We'll be watching your progress carefully.
That's an awesome amount of tracks in such a short amount of time.
Rememer, When in doubt just floor it.

Good Luck!
pio!pio! 03-24-2005 07:06 PM

oops..didn't read that you had an 04

good luck! can you swap over the 05 hubs for the beefier wheel bearings?
racerjon1 03-24-2005 07:12 PM

Luke, first, I hope we have a kick ass time again this year. It should be a fun week. You wont have the stock evo to pick on though :D

Second.. I am down here already, at the hotel in Savannah, I will see you this weekend.

Luke,

We will definitely team up!

Will you be at the Beaverun School at the beginning of April? I am flying up and hitting the track in a rental! :p Anything to learn the line!

You are lucky to be near some of the tracks! The only time I have on any of them is from previous One Laps and One Lap schools. We will be bringing our bike though!

Later,

Enrique

lukerussell 03-24-2005 10:39 PM

I need to find me a fold up bike. That's definetly the way to go. I will be doing Beaverun in April. I was also thinking of flying and renting, but my free credit card airline tickets are sold out for those dates. So I may tow the car up, but will probably snake the wifes bone stock focus svt. It's a killer 20 hour drive, but it will be good practice for the One Lap.

John - I downloaded the seat-time movie to try and peak and your car. I'm guessing it's that crazy blue thing. Guess I'll find out Saturday.

Luke
racerjon1 03-25-2005 01:40 AM

Nah, its not the blue thing.

It won't be there this weekend even. Where this is my day and i am "running" things it wouldn't be a good chance to do testing. I will probably be testing in NY, and another day at Roebling in April.
I need to find me a fold up bike. That's definetly the way to go. Luke
We had a fold up bike in 03, it was ok but geared really short for "biking" the track in the morning. Next time I'm taking a full-sized bike on a rack or a real trailer..instead of a novelty trailer:

i've been to BeaveRun. my folks live in pittsburgh and it's where i lived for a while. from gainesville to pittsburgh takes 14 hours while going 5-10 over the limit. i've done this drive and back more times than i have fingers. also, slow down when you hit the patch of US-19 with is about 70 miles long. a LOT of cops there.
Fitz 03-26-2005 07:53 PM

Nick and I are planning to arrive on Friday afternoon for One Lap registration. Will be good to finally put a face to the name Luke.

Thanks for all the help, advice, etc. Roebling went good, not great, just good. The roll cage significantly stiffens the car. It also puts a lot of weight up high on the car. The car would definetley be faster without it, but safety first. One the potenzas, the rear was sliding all over the place. It felt like a drift car. I switched to the PS2's and the car felt much more controllable and I felt I was going 4 seconds faster a lap. However, I was only about a second faster and that was with increased boost. I thought the fresh PS2's at 245 vs. the 7000 miles old potenzas at 225 would've made a significant differance, but no. The PS2's also seemed to wear a bunch w/ just 15 laps or so on them. Roebling is tough on tires, i had psi at 38F 36R and it increased to about 45F hot and 41R front after 5 laps or so. The sidewalls are so soft on the PS2's I actually think they'll benefit from more pressure. The seemed to be rolling over a lot. I think I'm going to stick w/ the PS2's just because they made me feel more comfortable. I will bump them up to 255's though. I also need to heat cycle them so they'll last longer.

Other than that, I ran out of gas with over almost 3/8 on the needle. I hate that, it's happened on my last 3 track days. I'll have to remember to keep at least a 1/2 tank before the one lap events. Also when I turned the boost up to 24 it blew a vacuum hose off and the hose to the blow off valve. It popped then a bunch of black smoke poured out of the tailpipe. Scary, but Dale from Boxer4Racing and Steve Rankins were there and knew exactly what happened. It was an easy fix, and I'll be zip tie-ing all those connections. I also need to dial in the greddy profec. If anyone w/ a green or bigger turbo and a profec, that does road track events, has any good settings to share, I'd appreciate it.

Kim or anyone - Is Vishnu entering the same EVO from last year? From what Jon at Seat-Time tells me, there will be some healthy EVO's at the one lap.

I'll be packing up tonight and tomorrow night, driving all night wed. so I can be at Top Speed Sales for a Thu. morning tune. Nathan's tune at TXS has been perfect, but I want to see what a larger dose of C16 will do.

I almost thought of cancelling the Top Speed tune after the Suby walked on a modded viper at the drag strip Thursday (his plate said 1FAST MF). Then Saturday I was behind a Ferrari F360 Challenge race car at Sebring, traffic cleared, we both stepped on it and by the braking zone we were side by side. Yes, it's official, a Subaru can walk on not just a Ferrari, but a Ferrari race car. The suby was on the stock potenzas, he had 295 slicks, so he killed me in the corners. It was the short course and he would gain about 3 - 4 car lengths a lap.

Is there an easy way to get rid of the 155 mph limiter? I have a UTEC, but it's definetely ending the party at 155 mph. Is there a UTEC setting that may disable it? Other than maybe VIR, I don't think I'll get close to it, but better safe than sorry.

Friday is registration and put a thousand stickers on your car day. First event is Saturday. Should be a fun week. Thanks to my sponsors Turbo XS, Subaru, Rota and Safe Drives. And KC, Rally Decals for some sweet stickers.

Luke

PS - Thanks for the offer [emailprotected], I just now saw it, just a little too late.
PDXTuning 04-26-2005 03:15 PM

The UTEC will not be able to change your rev limit or speed limit. A reflash is the only way to over ride that in the stock ECU.

You could have the ECU reflashed to take care of those couple items, and leave the rest of the tables stock so your tune was still valid.

Haha!
Luke, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Ask Dan Cary (who hasn't been back in 3 years) about making changes to the car and not testing them in the days before the event. On the plus side, you aren't driving a $250k benz. In that case, throw another 20 degrees of timing at it!
lukerussell 04-26-2005 04:58 PM

funny stuff. hopefully those top speed guys can remove the limiter for me. i'll probably run my current maps, just want something a little extra - just in case.

Luke,
Be careful! There is a ton of power left in that tune, but I left it rich, retarded and at low boost for a reason. The fact that you were even in the same league as an F360 should let you know you've got more then enough power to get the job done. I'd hate to see things go south because someone tried to get the max power out of that setup.

For what its worth, the UTEC will not be able to remove the top speed limit until firmware is released to take control of the DBW system.

Looks like we should have a fun battle next week.

BTW since its been announced other places, I will be at the wheel of the AMS Evo VIII.

lukerussell 04-26-2005 07:57 PM

Nathan,
I hear you. Your maps are exactly what I asked for. Tons O torque, flawless w/ no knocking - ever. I completely trust them and I know they'll make me last the whole race. While I'm not 100% decided on this yet, I just want one map tuned for straight c16 - for maybe some last day antics IF I have some catching up to do.
DrBiggly 04-27-2005 12:37 AM

Good luck to all!

I'm curious just how much power that Luke's car has and the AMS EVO has. Although I'm going to guess that those figures are a bit NDA. :)
lukerussell 04-27-2005 08:38 AM

i don't remember exactly, i lost my floppy w/ the dnyo graph. i think on pump gas i'm 308 hp and 340 torque, on c16 i'm 340 ish hp and 380 ish torque. the ams evo, although detuned from it's crazy 650 drag hp, will still be significantly more stout than my sti. and it has a great driver. the evo is really in a different league. my only hope is that it's not dead on reliable like my STi. reliability is as important as speed. if you dnf one event, you drop significantly in points. but ams has a great team assembled, so i'm sure they'll make it fine. many one lap entrants think it will be a shootout between the Hennesy (sp?) Viper of Brian Smith and the AMS EVO for top spot.

Don't count out Ron this year; his truck is sorted and making more power than last year. The radicals might be contending, too, if a: they show up, and b: the drivers can cope for that long. Good luck, I'll see you Monday @ NHIS :)

Luke,
I didn't know the AMS car was in contention for a top spot. Isn't that Viper something like 900hp? (At least I thought I remember hearing stories of some 800-900hp Viper at OneLap.)

For the folks in the Radicals...man, that trip is going to be awfully uncomfortable. Fast on track, sucks everywhere else. :(

Hope to hear of updates from the road. Keep it shiny side up! :)
lukerussell 04-27-2005 11:25 AM

at roebling, there was a radical running about 10 - 15 seconds PER LAP faster than me or anyone else in normal cars. a normal full bodied car holds no chance. i just choose to ignore the fact that they exist for the time being.

Luke, thank you very much for the kind words, I am not counting you and that Subaru reliability out at all though.. We have a good platform, but its still its first real roadcrouse competition test.

The radical at SeatTime was on full slicks, streets will make a bit of difference, but should still outrun us all. And Ron will be tough in the truck.

BTW, AMS Evo CAN put down as much as 547 in roadrace trim.. but for longevity issues we wont be doing that.

Jon
