Shifter and knob Opinions

Hey guys. I know this has been covered, but I'm looking for newe opinions on not only which short shifter to purchase, but also which knob to go with it.
I know most people like the Kartboy short shifter. Any thing out there that others like?
And as far as knob, personally, I love the styling of the Greddy Counterweight knob, but since its all metal, I hear its a pain with extreme weather conditions. Too hot, or too cold. What do you guys perfer?

Best thing to do, is go to a meet, and ask people nicely to experiment with theirs. You need to figure out what height you like, what throw reduction you want and what kind of knob you want.
The metal knob thing really isn't that bad, but I generally have a pair of Nomex gloves in the glovebox anyway (for autox) just in case it gets hot :)
FWIW I have tried 4 different shiftknobs but I am still rocking my gray Kartboy Knuckleball. It's the perfect.

i got the factory short throw shifter. It does the job...by all means it shortens the shifts, but you pay a price for it. It's very notchy and gets stuck way too often. However...i've had it for so long that i'm used to it and have no plans to swap it out.
CN...go with the kartboy setup, as for shiftknobs...dude there are so many just start buying them by the dozen or as the ButtDyno recommended...go to a meet and kindly ask to touch other people's knobs

I"m sorta in the same boat--wanting a new shift knob. Right now, I feel the stock STI titanium shift knob is too small. I want something with meat on it! For me, it's kinda between teh Beatrush knob or the Prodrive knob. Heating/cooling won't be issues, windows are tinted and it's garaged non-daily driver ...
FWIW, I have Kartboy SS, and it's teh shiz heh

i have the factory STi shortshifter (go the car used with it included)
my friend has the COBB ss and it is sooo much smoother, precise, and really fun to use (shorter too). The kartboy is also shorter than the STi one.
Id like to upgrade sometime... but i got used to mine already

My fav combo was the Cobb shifter with a prodrive knob, I liked it because I could adjust the height. I like a preatty short throw but a taller shifter all together, the KB is tall as well.

im very happy with the stock short shifter it doesnt have much play and is much shorter than my previous type r.

I have a Greddy counterweight shift knob and could not be happier, I have a stock shifter and it feels like it shortened the throw a little, plus it is nice and heavy so it just goes right into gear. On hot days it can burn your fingerprints off but that is my only complaint. The knob is great and it looks damn good too.

The right size, throw, smooth shifts and smooth knob.

I have the STi short shifter, Kartboy front/rear shifter bushings, and my own aluminum knob.

I like it, but Im thinking about getting the TiC shifter pivot sleeve bushing thingies.
Maybe I should also get the kartboy lever? Doesnt that shorten the throws even more?
STi lever reduced stock throw by 19%
Kartboy lever reduces stock throw by 40%
therefore, i can still upgrade to the KB one
My friend has the COBB shortshifter, and it felt just perfect along with the KB bushings, so I may look into that also.
who knows if you can remove the factory STi short throw lever, sell it for swap into any other wrx? Or can it only work with the special linkage?

I heard only the Momo knob fit's the stock boot. How about the Kart Boy and the Prodrive?
| WRXDriftR | 07-26-2006 10:36 AM |
as long as the knob has a machined lip in the bottom half, the stock boot can slide up over that lip and grab on to it. Thats what I do when I make knobs for my car on the lathe. Its a small conical lip underneath to hold the boot so it looks stock

I've got the factory short shifter on my STi. I hate it. I was amazed that they even call it a short shifter. Not very precise, and definitely not short.
BTW, the titanium shift knob burns your hand after it sits in the sun for awhile.

I've only ever used the STI short shifter assembly, but as far as knobs, I would recommend the Prova, if you can find it. Hands down, my favorite. Stock weight, great looks, no temperature problems.

Thats what I have and many people have complimented me on the setup. U have my shifter low and pretty damn short throw. I had the STi short throw with the titanium knob from the factory was nicer then a stock shifter but not as good as my setup now. I was one fo the first to have a Cobb double adjustable with the Sti short throw linkage before cobb fiked it for there new model shifter. Mine is precise and notchy

Anybody ever try the Cobb UPGRADED TRANSMISSION MOUNT? Cobb claims that this improves shifting.
I find that Kartboy appears to have front and rear bushings. WTH? Instructions only appear to address the front, and Cobb only offers front.

question on the bushing. what if i didn't go with the bushings right away. bad idea? or can i wait and add them later? how hard is the whole setup to install? do i need to do front and rear bushings?
| INDY_06_STI | 07-27-2006 08:14 AM |
2mprzya, check out the Kartboy site. Look under instructions, and it has pretty good, detailed instructions. Probably nearly identical regardless of whose product you buy. Also note that Cobb bushings are probably identical to Kartboy, both made of urethane.
Does not show the "rear" bushing install though.

kartboy shifter bushings
kartboy rear shifter bushing
kartboy short throw shifter
kartboy shift knob.
I LOVE this setup. but Im a little gh3y when it comes to shifter knobs. I like to switch shift knobs very often. I dont know I always like changing things up. this is by far the best shift knob Ive had yet.
Im thinking about the STi duracon shift knob. its cheap and matches my interior very well. plus it comes with an uber cool shift pattern sticker

Does the Kart Boy shift know work w/ the stock boot?
| fireball_jones | 07-27-2006 02:12 PM |
I've tried a few, in order of favorites it's Prodrive > MOMO > Stock > Kartboy (just too round and small for me, and got about 2x as hot as the P-drive even though they're both black).
I'll probably go LGT knob for the winter.

I put in the TiC (Kartboy and TiC bushings / lever) complete combo this weekend. Wow. Much improved. Short and precise. Recommended!
| 2mprzya | 08-06-2006 07:48 PM |
are the front bushings the ones that are actully thrown on the shifter itself, and the rear bushing are underneath the car?
| INDY_06_STI | 08-06-2006 08:20 PM |
The shifter itself does not have any bushings in contact. But, the KB shifter is short, and the geometry is very very good. The bushings give you the positive feel when you shift. All of the bushings are under the car. You can do the KB short shifter (I think) from the top, but all of the bushings are revealed underneath the car.
| BlockAM | 08-06-2006 08:30 PM |
The shifter installs rather easily--all you have to do is unclip the gray plastic trim around the shift boot, then unscrew the knob and pull the boot off the lever. There is a bushing in the shifter itself, it goes in the round space where the shifter arm is bolted onto the lever. For the front and rear bushings you need to go under the car. I just did them yesterday--it's not too bad once you realize what needs to be done and the instructions on Scoobymods, while not perfect, supply enough insight to allow even a novice like me to install them without much difficulty.

I drove around with just the shifter on for about week before I got around to installing the bushings. The upgrade from the stock shifter to the KB was awesome, but the same "sponginess" when shifting existed as with the stock setup....After installing the front and rear bushings, the shifter is like butter--just pops smoothly, and very fluidly into gear (although upshifting to 2nd is still a bit less crisp, as it was with the stock setup)

so if i dont do bushings, it will be shorter, but feel the same as the regular shifter?
so if i dont do bushings, it will be shorter, but feel the same as the regular shifter?
Correct. The biggest problem with the stock shifter is the sponginess. I had all kinds of problems hitting the right gear, esp. 3rd vs. 5th, 4th vs. 6th. Upshifting or downshifting. With the bushings, no problem at all. The TiC / KB bushings, and the higher torque on the bolts going through the bushings make a huge difference. If I had to choose which to do, I would do all of the bushings rather than the lever. Of course, no one would actually do this, but the lever throw length is a small deal vs. the precision of the whole shifter. IMHO.

I've got a question that has been burning me since I got my 06 STI. I have to stock shifter. The subaru short shifter has all the linkages, but the KB is just the lever. Is there any benefit with having both? I guess what I am trying to say is that what the hell do the subi ss bring to the table?
If the subi ss shortens to 10%
and the KB shortens to 40%
If I had both, would that make 50%
I know this is a noob question, but hey, I have to learn somewhere.

| BlockAM | 08-11-2006 01:15 PM |
Since the factory sts shortens the throw in the linkages, and the KB does it with the lever, combining them would result in the having the benefit of both, but by exactly how much, who knows?
