Shift Knob Reccomendations
Some great advice on driving lamps so far so I'll try this one:
2002 2.5 RS. Don't like the stock "rubber"??? shift knob. Have read a lot of bad stories about shift knobs with universal adapers etc the keep coming loose. I want something that feels and looks good but prefer something that would screw right on. I like the look of the Momo knobs but not sold on their "fit". Probably something leather with silver/aluminum insert as my RS is silver.
Any reccomendations for something that will screw right on and stay on.

I bought the STI WRC titanium shift knob and it feels great expensive but great. The only thing I dont like is it absorbs heat and can burn your hand on a hot day. Bought mine from Subydude .

I have blue black carbon fiber in the car and had a shift knob custom made from an extra stock knob I picked up.
about 250.00 but looks real sweet ... same shape as stock,,,
stays on and doesn't get too hot. If you want the contact info about where I had it done let me know.

$250?! Man, you must really like that thing :)
I have a black Prodrive knob, and it gets mighty hot on summer days, but I think it's one of the best ones out there.... you know, for a shift knob.

ya I thought it would only be about 150.00 but I didn't arguee too much.. they had to lay the carbon fiber over the stock knob
and manually put about 20 coats of resin/epoxy on the knob and let it dry and sand between coats.. It was pretty labor intensive.

Another vote for the MOMO Air knobs with Paulie's adapter. I've had mine for a while now and it works great! Love the feel.

I just got a shiftknob for my 02 RS, and I can't take out the stock knob. I unscrew the old knob off, but the knob is still attached to the leather "bag". How can I detach it off the knob?
Thanks

I love my Kartboys shiftknob. I got it as part of the package: SS, bushings, and knob (I got mine with the blue insert).
KOK: Their is a lip around the bottom of the knob that holds the boot in place. Slip the boot off of the bottom of the knob.

Just some sharp, quick tugs on it will get the sucker off. :)

the adaptor from Paulie just makes the fit a lot better than without it. I hear that without it, the knob is very "loose". With it, the knob stays in place, firmly.

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd chime in here...
I know what you mean about the "universal application installation " that Momo uses...I didn't like that either, but I thought the knob was one of the best ones out there that really compliments the interior of the car.
So I developed an adapter...
My adapter allows the Momo Air Race Series shift knobs to fit llike a factory, OEM application - a screw on installation that has the notch for the shift boot to stay in place.
For more information, check out this thread:

I second jimbobrand. I love my WRC sti titanium rally shifter. It has a great feel.
| zsurfrin | 09-01-2002 02:44 PM |
you can use any knob that is sold as long as you know how to drill and tap, or if the hole is too big just find a threaded insert. That way you can have a custom look, i really don't like the momo or sti, so i opted for the custom knob. btw it cost a lot less than $250  how labor intensive is it to make a shift knob? 20 coats of resin would have made it a lot bigger than it is

I have gone through around 6 knobs on my WRX ranging from stock to STi to Momo to Kartboy. Still like the stock feel the most...
I had a Momo Combat, fit fine, never moved around, but still a little too pointed...
I am really looking for something stock shaped but with some silver on it...

Prodrive Silver shift knob here! $59, perfect fit, feels nice and heavy.. love it!

Okay, I'm also looking for a nice shift knob.
I was really considering the STi Titanium (not WRC, the cilinder-type one), nobody's mentioned it, I felt it in a showroom once, but I wanna hear from somebody who's driven it.
Also, how'bout everybody vote for their favorite.

I have driven with the STi Piston knob for a few weeks and can honestly say I didn't like it. It was very small, and just didn't feel right to the touch...
But then again, I hate small shift knobs...
Some people have it and like it. My advice to you would be to try and score one on the I-Club for cheap and see if you like it (that's what I did). I didn't end up blowing over 100 for it like the stealership wants...

Unfortunately they don't make one for Subaru, although it is just a matter of a different thread. Apparently someone convinced them a year ago to make up a prototype, told everyone here about it, and no-one was interested. If I had seen the post I would have chimed in, as I was looking at them at the same time. I like their original, but the one they are showing for the Vette looks real nice.

yes, a lot of people have them, and im sure if you look under the classifieds you'll find a lot for sale.
The thing is a piece of metal. When your car gets hot, the knob gets hot, really hot. I know someone who has it, and uses gloves to drive.
the knob looks super clean, and really noice, but the thing gets way to hot. i have a momo leather knob, and i love it.

I have this in my car also and absolutely hate it. It gets hotter than a lump of coal and it has an akward feel to it. It's not smooth and it doesn't fit well in your hand, because of it's shape. I'll be picking up either the MOMO Race Airleather or the MOMO Race Airleather Aluminum. The Kartboy knob looks pretty spiffy too. Whatever you do... DO NOT GET THE Ti knob!!!!
But hey! If you really want it, I'd be happy to sell it to you for a low and convenient price! :D

i still swear by my trust shift knob...looks nice, choice of different color inserts, shaped perfectly, nice and heavy, subaru specific threads, and best of all, $35 brand new. :D being polished aluminum, it does get HOT though, but no more so than the black plastic stocker.
BUT living in FL, i've come up with the solution getting scorched on hot shifters without having to wear gloves or any of that silliness...just go to sunglass hut and get one of those microfiber combination cleaning cloth/sunglass pouches (like the ones that come with oakleys, arnettes, etc.) with the drawstring, and just remember to throw it over the top of the shift knob when you get out of the car. or throw it on there after the fact -- they insulate your hand from the heat really well, and will polish all your fingerprints off at the same time.

best boots?
hello i friends,
Im a very happy first time subie owner. I have a 99 green! Impreza Sport Wagon.
Drives unbelievably tight compared to my past experiences.
As you can imagine, Im sorta into accessorizing, a little bit. So I bought a leather shift knob and wonder if the leather boot that is current issue with the i's would work?
fwiw, for my taste, the subie leather knob is not recommended, fatter than the original, not to my liking. I did not go with the Momo because of the metal cap. I dont want my hand on metal, personal taste. If someone knows a good ALL leather knob, Im interested. If anyone wants my just purchased Subie all leather knob, $49 delivered takes it.
Anyway, if anyone cares to venture a guess as to whether the current i-Subie stock leather boot, or a momo, will fit my 99 with minimum aggravation, feedback would be much appreciated.
btw, leather does not get too hot or too cold to touch, unlike metal and carbon and even plastic. But you knew that!
thanks
Hanna

Momo this and Momo that...Don't get me wrong I love my WRX steering wheel but I think momo is a little overpriced. I just got an Ichibahn Torq series shiftknob. Its black weave with a silver insert and a silver bottom screw on piece. It looks great...its subtle but attractive and matches the wrx interior perfectly. Plus since I got it at work I only paid 24 dollars for it...If you don't work at a shop or know someone who does it retails for like 50 or so. By the way It comes with the proper fitting sleeves and it doesn't move at all...You also get a nifty ichibahn sticker and a bottle opener!!!:D
