Carbon Fiber hoods at SPEED

I've heard someguys saying that when they get up to high speeds with a carbon fiber hood they see the hood shaking and the hood tries to lift up. I plan on buying a carbon fiber hood for my 2006 sti and going over 150 mph. Do I need hoodpins or something extra to hold the hood down?
| crazyGC8 | 08-12-2006 11:32 AM |
Hoodpins help out a lot, especially at those speeds. Some hoods are better than others, some will break the hood latch very easily. All of them can weaken over time without pins and can hit your windshield!!
May I ask, Why do you plan to go 150MPH??

CF hoods are usually no lighter than the stock aluminum unless you plan on spending a lot of money.

the wrx hood is probably lighter...especially without the insulation, clips and splitter.
oem aluminum hood > aftermarket CF hood.

Try not to kill yourself kid, our insurance rates are high enough as it is without 17 year olds destroying an STi by smashing into a tree at 150mph.

haha I've been racing go-carts since I was 5 and dirt-bikes and quads since I was 11. I've been over 185 on the street and driven over well over 150 on a track. I'm not stupid like most young kids I know where you can go fast and where you can not.

At a go-kart race its a race track set up for racing, nice and smooth. There might things on a public road that can cause trouble such as potholes, debris, and other cars. I had a VIS CF hood on my 03 with the factory sized scoop and although nothing bad ever happened, going over 85 will make you pretttty nervous. The damn thing would lift about 1/4" around the sides. I ended up selling that car but the next thing on the list would have been hoodpins.
Now that I have my 06, I would never own a CF hood again. Stock is pretty much the same weight no matter what anyone says.
But my RS hood is heavy as @*#&

The stock hood on my 69 camaro does some interesting dancing at anything over 100. If it was carbon fiber, i'm sure it would be destroyed at 140 or 150. I am in agreement with all the other people by the way; 180 on the street is stupid/suicidal. I creamed a jack-rabbit once going 90 on a highway in the desert. Had I been doing double that speed... it could have easily caused a crash. Loose a tire going like that... your dead. (I don't care if you are running Z rated tires... they still fail. Ask they guys going for speed records. Tires rated for 230, offen blow at 180-200.)

Its funny how these threads always end up the same way. First its the question thats been covered 100+ times (no offense, happens to the best of us), but then the OP says they intend to use the information to do something retarded, and everyone cautions him. Of course, then the poster says "Oh don't worry, I'm different than everyone else who has said the same thing I'm saying right now." Everyone gives him more **** about how no matter how much experience the OP has, there is always a good chance of unforseen circumstances complicating his origional plan. And then the OP comes back with a smart remark about how everyone has misunderstood his statements and just because he has double the highest speed limit in the united states on a public yet somehow "safe" road, he doesn't intend to do it again. How does the story end? 9 'o-clock news, the obligatory "street racing gone wrong" story, we all say a prayer for the poor enthusiast that lost his life, and caution the next one not to make the same mistake.
Of course you could always wreck on the track too, in which case you're still going 150MPH, but hey, we're not your mom, so what if a couple of internet jockeys don't agree with your choices.
Funny how this all started from a simple question. CF hoods can break the latch at 60MPH, if I were you, I'd stick with the stock hood, it's the same weight. If you insist on CF, buy hood pins, and you'll have nothing to worry about, well if you don't count racing at 150MPH.
BTW, before I go find another thread to whore on, I think you should know: The rules of physics apply to "professional racecar drivers" too, and even on the safest of racing surfaces (a track), they get seriously injured all the time, so just because it was a pro racer driving at 185, doesn't mean you were in good hands.

I said I have been in a car (THE PASSENGER SEAT) that was going 185 mph on the street and the driver is a professional race car driver so i trust him plenty when he goes that fast. Also I said I have driven a race car 150 mph on a track, It was the same guys race car. I plan on going to this track and driving my car 140-150. I NEVER said I plan to go 150 mph on the street.
no, you said a go-kart. Your friend is an idiot for going that fast on a road. Like it's been stated before, go-karts don't handle like cars, and race tracks are nothing close to public roads. Like i said end yourself before you raise everyones insurance even higher. You are one of the most ignorant people I have seen post here.
And to start with you posted that you went 185 on the street. You made no mention of being the passenger, therefore implying you were driving. It's like you think it's a great accomplishment to drive that fast on a public roadway. After people jumped on you about it you changed your story to just being the passenger. And now you're changing the story of driving a go-kart at 150 on the track to drving some douchebags racecar at 150. How many more times will you change your story? What's your next post going to be?
"haha i got you guys, i never drove that fast I was just trying to get you guys going and it worked"
Get the hell out of here until you learn to grow up.
