IT CAN BE DONE!! *Heated* STi seats!!

IT IS POSSIBLE!
I just got my set of STi seats last night for my WRX. I have the cold-weather package with heated seats and live in a moderate/cold climate during winter so I didnt wanna get rid of them.
It took about 4 hours to remove all the heater components from the two front wrx seats and reinstall them into the STi seats, plus remove/install into car.
Do i have the first ever Heated STi seats?? :D
I also added a bit of trimmed pipe insulation foam on either side of the driver's seat to bolster the seat back.
Heres what the heater components look like:

and when they go under the covers using some double-stick thick strong tape:

and the final product:

I had to do some modding to get it to all fit properly. I decided to use the back portions in the seat bottom, and the butt portions in the seat back because it was impossible to slide the heaters under the front portion of the seat bottom without cutting the fabric. But it still works!
Enjoy,
~Chris

This worked because my car is a WRX. It CAME with the heated seats, so I simply unplugged the heaters from the harness, swapped them into STi seats and then plugged them back into the power supply.
If you try this to an STi, it will not have the power supply, switches, relays, etc, and will need those to be separately purchased and installed on your own.

nice job man.... love the sti seats even more cuz they're heated!

I'm pretty sure in Canada they come standard with heated seats. Sorry... :)

there is a company here in northern indiana that put HEATED & COOLED seats in a friends STI, not tryin to bust yer bubble, you did the install yourself good job, and heated seats are very cool (was gunna say "no pun intended" but i guess that wasn't a pun since heat isn't cool.....'errr i mean in temp.)

is it hard to take the seat cover off?

The harnesses should all be there if the car originally came with heated seats. I had to wire everything up manually in my 99 RS. Well worth it though.
Good job on the seats. I would have been worried about ripping the heating element but if everything works then no worries.

Does anyone know if Subaru seperates those components as a part number so others can do this too?
Thanks in advance.

^^id rather not heat my seats with a fart...
but yea, i was a little concerned about ripping the cloth heaters, but took my time and it all worked out great! They heat up in about 30seconds just like in my wrx. and if canada gets them, oh well, first USDM heated ones! lol. maybe. whatever, Im happy :D
i did not have to fully remove either of the seat covers. just pulling the back upwards and the butt part forwards gives you space to work.

Where can I find information about cooled seats? Is there a chiller installation you can do? like how my little minifridge works with that electrical current cooler?

does anyone know the part number for the heaters. i want to install some in my wrx. would it be pretty easy to do, even if my car didn't come with seat heaters?
| dcoty | 03-02-2006 06:38 PM |
In Canada its a standard feature, and thank god! That was a big change from the unheated leather seats in my RS, especially in -40.
| richy_21 | 03-02-2006 06:45 PM |
How bad did u tear apart the wrx seats? Can they be put back together? Details...pm aim anything. Im going to do this!!!
| sneezy316 | 03-02-2006 07:02 PM |
Wow!! I've been looking for ways to add to the side bolsters. I didn't think the seat covers in the WRX would stretch. Thanks.

As you can see, I managed to remove the heaters from the WRX seats and install them into the STi ones. Both seats were opened in the same way to remove and install them, and were completely reassembled without any damage, stretching, or anything else. PERFECT! lol

Some cooled seats would be awesome here in SoCal. Doesn't really get cold enough here to justify heated seats. :)

from what i know about the cooled seats it is basically a fan unit that pushes air thru the seat bottom and back (if leather seats, MUST have a perforated insert). the company that makes unit and the number of the unit is TABCO (seat temperature control systems) 416 (heated and cooled seats).
i called automotive additions and that is what they told me.....maybe able to order from the manufacturer (???????) but maybe that helps someone out

Pretty much EVERY automotive upholstery shop can install heated and cooled seats. BlueSky Sunroofs in Fairfield, NJ, offered to install both when I was getting the heated leather seats installed in my WRX.

Wouldn't it be easier to just take the heated WRX seats and put the STi seat covers on them and be done with it? I thought the seats were the same otherwise...

Good work.... I am curious as to who will be the first with heated rear seats as well now!

i thought about swapping the seat covers, but look at my pictures, some you may see how hogrings and metal rods hold the covers in place. You would have to completely disassemble the entire seat, cut alot of crap, and re-sew it all to swap covers. this is the only practical way
| rotaman | 03-05-2006 05:57 PM |
so what are you going to do with your old seats now? sell them perhaps?
