In an effort to recognize the Motorsports "experts".... part 1

Subie Gal 03-28-2002 10:02 AM

In an effort to recognize the Motorsports "experts"....

There will not be a major division of the motorsports forums!

but we will be developing an "ask the experts" section....

We are asking that any legitimate member of a motorsports team (driver, service, mechanic, prep, navigator, etc.) who is interested in participating in and responding to technical questions etc., post to this thread.

*semi-pro to pro's only
*no amateur racing
*autocross does not qualify at this time
*you have to be part of a legitimate race team

what we'll do is give those who are deemed experts in their fields a special title... the red subtitles like you see on Gary Sheehan's user name "Sheehan Motor Racing" - - the title will list the race team you are from, thus indicating that that person is a known, experienced individual in their respective field.

we need the following for those that are interested:
1 - name
2 - subtitle - race team you're from
4 - web site link (if applicable)
3 - type of racing you're involved in

please post to this thread only.
do not email Nick or myself with this information.
all who post will be considered, some will receive subtitles.

feel free to pm me with any questions,
[and post your discrepancies (i am sure there are a few) here.]

This is Nick's compromise in reading the large forums discussion thread. I believe it's a positive thing in that it allows for more than "one" expert, or individual to represent a particular motorsports area.

The idea is to identify those with experience in their fields, that's all. It make it easier for members, (especially new members) to distinguish who has experience and what their background is.

Thanks all.

Not sure i fit into any of the catagories Jamie as i am not quite sure what a legitimate race/rally team actually is and what is pro or semi pro.

Anyway, here is me, i do too much stuff to put it under a one team banner and as i am UK based anyway the team names mean nothing.

British national rally championship winning team - service crew/mechanic
British circuit GT silhouette racing - mechanic/designer
race engine builder
Rally driver/navigator in british club rallying
Sprint/hillclimb driver
high performance car track driver
19 years hands on active participation in all forms of motorsport except drag racing
WRC and TSD rally globe trotter (had a meal with Dave Richards in Catalunya last week (well, he was on the next table :D:lol: ))
Technical advisor to the first world record held by the WRX, driving in a constant sideways slide for 2 Hrs 11 Mins 18 Secs.
Technical forum moderator on scoobynet and all round good egg. :D:lol:

I have a day job working in IT that pays for all ^^^^^^

You know me, think up an apropriate name, nothing too rude though please. :D

Good to see the forum is not being split up, thanks for listening!! :D

BTW Jamie, I'm not sure what you mean by "pro or semi-pro" since all U.S. rally drivers still need a real job to pay the rent. I doubt anyone here makes a living driving.
subrew2 03-28-2002 05:24 PM

The distinction bewteen "pro" and "amatuer" may not be appropriate. Just because autocross is amatuer, doesn't mean the people doing it know less than those with "pro" race teams. Besides, what does "pro" mean? Making $? If so, you might want to visit SCCA's ProSolo contingency program.

With that in mind, I think that it might be good to have a few autocross peeps "registered." When it comes to many of the setup, driving, engineering relating questions that often pop up in this forum, I would estimate that the handful of top autocross drivers competing at national level autocross events in Subies have as much real-world experience as "pro" drivers.

Just a thought.

hey Chris...
we'll take your $.02 into consideration.
I can appreciate what you're saying, and you have lots of experience and useful information to share....

thanks for being polite and objective in your response.
I know that 'no autocross/no amateurs' seem harsh,
but there will always be exceptions.

thanks again.

ChrisW 03-29-2002 06:28 PM

Hey that works. But I think there has to be some recognition to the autoX folks. to add to what subrew2 said, autox is an amatur racing format. It would be nice to recognize national champions or pro-solo champions as experts in this form of non-professional racing.

Beyond that I think this asking the experts is a great idea.

SubieGal,

Please do not exclude Auto-X and ProSolo. There are likely to be more questions about setup and driving techniques about Auto-X than most other forms of racing. More Auto-X'ers on the board than any other type of motorsport too. Just my $.02. Thank you.

David M
AWMIII 03-31-2002 09:40 PM

SubieGal,

I am beginning to think that you have an inherant prejudice against Autox. First you try to rid the motorsports forum of autox related posts, then you announce that you are going to have a group of experts, but no autoxers. Have you ever been to a SCCA National Tour or Prosolo event? I would be willing to bet that there are like 10 times as many SCCA members who compete in solo2 or Prosolo as there are in performance rally. Have you ever been to a local autox event where 180 cars show up? Some of the competitors travel hundreds of miles to go to local events let alone Tours or Pros. I don't know how things are where you are, but here in Philadelphia, we get all kinds of serious competitors who show up at our events with all kinds of serious cars. The bigger classes usualy have the top five drivers seperated by less than 1 second. I don't know what your agenda is, but you are cutting off your face to spite your nose. Some of us take autox very seriously. In our region, it is the only SCCA program that turns a profit year after year.
randy zimmer 03-31-2002 10:08 PM

we need a new forum title

Please give the Solo guys their own place.
The whining is deafening and they'll keep protesting until they win.
Rovah 03-31-2002 10:21 PM

I agree with Randy. The AutoXers need, and should have, their own forum. Apparently there are many here on i-Club.

Hey Randy I am not whining. You are correct in that you can get protested to death in Solo. We would appreciate a specific forum for discussion of Auto-xing (thanks Rovah). I am starting my racing "career" in Solo and will progress to Club Rally and Road Racing later as resources become available. Let's not digress any further and continue this topic in an appropriate manner.

Thank you.

Solo Forum

I was locked out of JohnFs thread.
Anyway, there are so many solo guys and they'll all ask the same things over and over. Don't get me wrong, I started out by going Solo but when you're new you're excited and eager and impatient. No question too dumb and they'll never calm down in number. Let's get a solo forum like JohnF said.

Well let's see,

Dave Clark

Involved in rallying continuously since 1985 in the following capacities: driver, codriver, car builder, service crew, course worker, rally organizer, clerk of course, chief of controls, tech inspector, course opening car. That's all I can remember right now.

Licensed SCCA ProRally Scrutineer

Was a SCCA road race scrutineer a few years back

Operate Dave Clark Motorsports which specializes in building roll cages for Porsches and other race cars and ground up construction and maintenance of rally cars. Have built several championship winning rally cars, including the 2000 Canadian and SCCA Prod.GT national rally champion.

Involved with several teams including:

Pat Richard, Rocket Rally Racing

Also, I am the official Distributor for DMS shocks in North America
www.dmshocks.com

Additionally, I first started working on Subarus in the mid '80s while going to school at Western Washington University's Vehicle Research Institute where the very first 16 valve DOHC Subaru engine (the prototype for the WRX engine) was developed during the time I was there.

Anyway, that should give a little background info.

i've nothing personal against autocross, i've 2 trophies from doing it myself!!! I'm just simply embarking upon the path Nick and I discussed. We'll come up with something for you Autox guys... email me your suggestions if you like!

STORER 04-02-2002 12:10 PM

There is one thing to look out for. Just because someone races, dosen't mean they know a lot. I won't name any one, but I've herd some BS from people that view them selves as professional/semipro racers and there comments are totally false. How do I know this even tho I'm not a pro-racer? I'm a design engineer that has been working in the field for many years and have gone/going to school for many years. Physics and numbers don't lie, people do. Even tho these people didn't mean to lie, they still passed on false info to others. A lot of common knowledge isn't true.

If you want an engineer on your team of people, I will volunteer.

STORER,

I just read your post, I think it could be considered some what flame full. For one you state you are a engineer, Are you a P.E. ?
Anyway I'm not, but there is alot more to Racing then just numbers. Numbers don't count for as much as good commonsense (Quality Welds Example). I think most us are not going to quit our day jobs to go racing most of us are just trying to have some fun (Safely) and become better drivers. I'm always looking for some good advice or opinions. Some of the best advice you can get is from some of the old timers most of them have seen it all. No one is GOD......Well Maybe John Buffum ;)

All the best,

Tommy B

STORER 04-02-2002 01:02 PM

Tommy B I'm not flaming anyone, just stating a fact. I know that I can and have learned from the "old timers" and some young people too. I'm not here acting like a pro but I can offer some valuable knoweldge. I've worked in the auto industry my whole professional life (building machines for Ford, Jaguar, Chrysler, etc.). I can answer why question. Why is this manufacturing process better then another one. Why are certain parts heat treated. Some common knowlege is marketing hype and not truth and even some racers buy in to it.

Steve
Thug 04-02-2002 01:42 PM

They are looking for pro/semi-pro racers(and team members) to answer questions about racing because they're the ones that have 'been there and done that', so to speak. Im sure as an engineer that you will often know more about a certain subject than the guy that's breaking what you're building. And Im sure you'll be able to comment in this forum and help out alot. But I think right now what Subie Gal and Nick are looking for is experienced racers & race team members.

I'm looking at John F's "title" and then at my "affiliation" and I'm jealous.
Does he get a title because he's British?
I think because I made my 2.5 from e-bay parts and tow with a Legacy and a 2-wheel trailer (no brakes either - trailer brakes are for sissies) I think the that the red title under my name should be "cheap bastard".
I'm sure that there are other cheapskates that'll wonder about a problem they have and want to ask, "what would Randy do?"
In turn, I'd also suggest that NO ONE <EVER> take my advice and actually try it.
