I have rattles.
JBPolkAudio 01-28-2004 04:17 PM

Well the inside of my car has it's share of rattles and creaks... I think ANY car has these problems over time anyway.

I've got this rattle in my 04 already.. too lazy to fix it of course though.

Nothing to speak of, unless I put something that can rattle in one of the storage compartments. For instance, I have a tin of mints in my change drawer. That rattles.
KanosWRX 01-28-2004 04:30 PM

Hmm if your worried about rattles and noises you might not want to get a WRX. The engine alone makes funny noises, like ticking noises all the time. The interior loves to rattle, must have about 4 or 5 different ones, but usually only 1 or 2 are usually hear commonly. My dash rattles (their is a fix, but lazy), my door rattles, my rear O-****-Handle rattles, when ice is on the back window the trunk rattles. I had a rattle from my guage cluster, but I fixed that, screw was a little loose. But yeah, they sound quite at the dealer, but give them a good couple thousand miles and the rattles will start, but who buys this car worried about rattles. Just give it some more gas :)
milla 01-28-2004 04:32 PM

the drivers window squeaks when rolled up or down!!
gjhsu 01-28-2004 04:53 PM

I've got the window squeak, and intermittent rattle from the front plastic piece just behind the windshield. Other than that, my car seems to be put together fairly well.
Cardiff Giant 01-28-2004 05:03 PM

The only rattle I have is the cargo shade tends to rattle a bit in the super duper cold(though oddly enough when it's warmer it's silent) and my Kenwood Woox that I have under the passenger seat rattles a bit because some of the wiring smack up against the plastic; that one is hardly Subaru's fault as it's an aftermarket product installed by me. Other than that, the ar is solid. Way quieter than my old 93 Ford Escort wagon which rattled like a can of spray paint.
SupaSizeFries 01-28-2004 05:27 PM

I've got some rattles and squeeks. One rattle comes from the front passenger side window I think. Then again, I have around 80k miles.
MB38 01-28-2004 05:40 PM

The only time I hear rattles is when I'm playing a relatively bass-intensive song. I don't have an aftermarket sub, but I have the bass about 3/4 of the way up on my 250w head unit.
Kitt 01-28-2004 06:47 PM

I have the dash squeek, window squeek, seatbelt squeek, and some rattle coming from the center console, but these only happen once and a while. Most of the time I don't hear anything, probably has something to do with temperature.
North Ursalia 01-28-2004 08:23 PM

If you could lay off the all cap and excessive punctuation in the subject lines, I'd really appreciate it.

John Sever 01-29-2004 01:09 AM

ALL CARS RATTLE!!!!

They move around at high speed....they cannot be stopped.
Gethin 01-29-2004 01:23 AM

No rattles,

until my windshield was replaced after cracking,

now it rattles like a bag of nails!

I think it's the plastic strip running under the window.

Gethin.

My dad's Lexus IS300 has never seen a rattle in it's life so far. That's a well built car compared to the rattle can Subaru with it's thin sheet metal, frameless windows, and plastic bonanza. Oh well, I got the car for what's under the hood anyways. :D
bcblues 01-30-2004 08:29 AM

Knock on wood. I have been pretty lucky with my Subies. My GFs Outback sedan VDC is absolutely rattle-less. My 02 WRX had an annoying wind noise at highway speeds from the drivers side side window. But by lowering the window (even a fraction of an inch) and raising it again, it would quiet down nicely. My 04 Sti had a really annoying ashtray rattle when I got it. I removed the ash tray and waxed the runners (on the slide mount) with regular maguires. Then I squirted a little bit of RemDry (a spray teflon lubricant that dries completely) and that was the end of that problem. Yesterday I developed a rattle near the back window, but I suspect that it is just a piece of ice fallen down inside the area between the trunk and the rear window. It has been too damn cold to check (-20F).
ydant 01-30-2004 01:03 PM

Wagon.

Rattle in the overhead light (wires?)
Some rattle in the doors now (wires/clips)
Rattle in the dash bit just under the windshield, but I'm not fixing that until my windshield is replaced next week (see scoobymod link above).

Worst rattle is the red bull can that always seems to get lodged under the passenger side seat. :(

Solution? MUSIC! LOUD MUSIC!

But when I have money, the solution will be EXHAUST! LOUD EXHAUST!

DriftnWRX 01-30-2004 04:55 PM

i got one in the back driverside seatbelt area. This one is the loudest.
One in the Dome light (rareley rattles)
and one in the dash.

Buy hey its a Subaru not a Maybach 52 right?
ydant 01-30-2004 05:24 PM

Ooh, don't forget the seatbelt whistle when the windows are down and you have a passenger. That one drove me crazy - turns out the tags whistle. Cut 'em off (but don't tell anyone! they're like mattress tags!)

-y
Kitt 01-30-2004 06:20 PM

I never heard the tag whistle, I used to have the rear seatbelt rattle but it just went away
bcblues 01-30-2004 08:10 PM

Yep, the tag DOES whistle, flap, generally anoying. Does it say: "Do not remove under penalty of law?"
MAD REX 01-31-2004 10:33 AM

I got mad rattles y0! :disco:

Now my car makes a weird squeak everytime I shut a door
jimtweet 02-01-2004 03:41 PM

thanks guys for the input, just seems like everytime i get in my VW something else starts making noises, i get in some other cars and the are so SOLID they dont make a sound......but i understand rattles come, just as long as it doesnt sound like a tin box of screws...it drives me nuts:furious:
piker28 02-01-2004 03:42 PM

the more expensive the car the less it will rattle just how it goes

depending on where in nj you are i could give a ride one weekend so you can hear all the noises
kenchan 02-01-2004 06:31 PM

as long as it doesn't rattle with the motor's rpm increasing,
i don't really care about the noises my WRX makes. It's not
like our subies are 'classy' cars in the first place. Drive it
like a performance car and enjoy it. You have plenty of time
in the future to buy luxury cars that'll have no rattles. :)
Zola 02-01-2004 11:45 PM

Put it this way...I keep myself well-supplied with foam and silicone sealant to combat rattles. Most of mine come from the rear of the vehicle, I've killed nearly all of the ones in the front.

I hardly ever have passengers in the rear, so after taking off the plastic C-pillar covers I loaded up the seatbelt anchor thingy and the track it slides in with silicone sealant. They hardly move now but don't rattle. :) Also used silicone on the blue clips on the inside of the C-pillar covers.

I can't wait until summer when I can drive with the windows down. Some rattles I just live with but others that I can isolate and fix, I figure why not? It's cheap and interesting problem-solving...good for staving off Alzheimer's maybe.
abqkid 02-02-2004 10:00 PM

my center clock pod rattled a bit but, Then i put some weather stripping foam around the base and reinstalled it and no more rattle.:disco:
west 02-02-2004 10:40 PM

I have a 2002 wrx wagon my wife drives and has no rattles since I went over the hole car 2years ago. When it was new man! the rattles and creeks drove me nuts till one day I started to hear a grinding poping sound and took it in. Seems a series of bad spot welds along the roof and -A- frame were missed and were the cause of many problems. A month later (had only had the car two months) I recieved it back with weld burns in the carpet and minor scratches in the plastic all over the car. Bastards at big valley dodge/subaru even gave me several bad door dings. I only had the car for one month before this but lets say it got worked over.
At least I got the rattles fixed and haven't heard one since.

My new STI is well ,fun, but the creeking from the rear window
is annoying along with the hard rattle sound when the steering wheel is turned a little while going over very mild bumps in the road(dose not do this when held straight, I wonder why?)

Anyone know a good fix for the rear window creek.
All I got from the dealer is its from body flex and The rear window
will always creek! But why constantly and not intermitant?

What is the fix for the dash rattle , It has that too?
abqkid 02-02-2004 10:48 PM

For the dash rattle you might be able to do what i did with my clock. Figure out how to remove the dash (might be a lot of work) and put weather stripping foam around the areas were the dash mounts to the car and any other place that the dash touches the car. this will help the dash sit tighter thus removing the rattles.
bcblues 02-03-2004 02:09 PM

I diagnosed my rattle in the back. It was a AAA battery that one of my kids removed from their MP3 player and deposited in the arm rest depression used to close the door. Rattled like crazy. It took me a while to figure out because it is -20 F out and I was convinced it was a fragment of ice that had fallen inside the shelf between the trunk and the rear window.

For the record, my rear window is dead silent, no creaks at all.

You are incorrect. I know many audi owners who have not a single rattle at well over 80 thousand miles.

Yes, it drives me nuts. Its one reason I would consider not buying another subaru.

On the same note, I have NEVER heard a rattle in a lexus
wrxgrl 02-03-2004 09:20 PM

I hate rattles. I have three or four but lately two have taken over. First, my rearview mirror makes an electrical buzzing noise, thought it was due to my radar detector because it's hardwired up there but it's not. Next, my momo emblem on the steering wheel rattles... anyway, it's not as bad as my last car though I guess a lot of cars have them.
west 02-04-2004 01:34 AM

So placing a thin foam strip around the dash
will probably fix the rattle in the STI, thanks
I should have thought of that. I found the rattle, it is the plastic on the pillers where it meets up with the dash. This should be an easy fix.
Now to figure out the constant creek from the rear window! It stops when I push up on it, any suggesions on a fix for this. I even have demonstrated the rattle to the dealer and how I can stop it by pushing on the rear window. They just wasted my time and told me it was normal for it to do this in an STI! I suppose I need to call subaru!

any other sugestions?

WEST:devil:
abqkid 02-04-2004 11:01 AM

which way do you push on it to stop the rattle?
Lachlan 02-04-2004 01:32 PM

I have the beside-the-windshield-piece-of-plastic rattle, the window squeek, and now my passenger door pannel rattles so much when I play music that I have to fade the music to the rear speakers.
bcblues 02-04-2004 02:46 PM

Lachlan: I has a similar rattle in the door panel. It turned out to be the speaker wire (aftermarket) that looped down when the panel was installed and would swing and hit against the panel. It was tough to diagnose because when you take the door card off, the loop is gone, leaving you staring and blinking at nothing but solid......
howfast? 04-15-2008 12:57 AM

rattles will develop over time... and lowering your car will speed the process. Ive driven relatively new (3-4 years old) bmws and mercedes that rattle
designfate 04-15-2008 01:34 AM

4 year old thread?
bcblues 04-15-2008 08:02 AM

Still no rattles. :D Maybe I'm deaf!
