Need input on '06 WRX TR...

I work for a Subaru dealership in Lancaster, CA. We currently have a WR Blue '06 WRX TR(Tuner Ready) that we are looking into modifying--we have to stick with Subaru Performance Parts. And, we want to know, from a customer's point-of-view, if buying an already-modified WRX, STI, etc., sounds more mindful than buying a stock WRX, STI, etc? You, as enthusiasts, what do you think would stand out, as far as modifications go, and give the car that, "Wow!" that we're looking for, and maintain the factory warranty? :P :D Anyways, here's the list of mods we are currently looking into:
-Titanium Shift Knob:
Features top-quality lightweight titanium construction with a curved surface for easy grasping and shifting. The nylon fitting reduces vibration and heat transmitted from the transmission.
-Blue "i" Grille Center Ornament:
Replaces the stock center grille ornament with the distinctive look of the Subaru Blue "i".
-Air Duct Hose:
High-temperature red silicone hose embossed with STI logo. Connects intercooler to intake plenum.
-STI Front and Rear Sway Bars:
Increased diameter to 21mm for front and rear sway bars helps reduce body roll and improve handling.
-STI Strut and Spring Set:
Strut cylinder diameter is increased from 22mm to 39mm. Overall system stiffness is increased by 50%-130% depending on vehicle application. Springs lower body approximately 15mm-22mm.
-STI Air Cleaner Element:
Drop-in replacement air cleaner element allows a higher volume of airflow verses the stock air filter. Paper element and steel mesh construction does not require oiling.
-STI Strut Tower Brace - Steel:
Provides additional stiffness to the upper suspension area. Reduces strust deflection to promote quicker steering response.
-SPT(Subaru Performance Tuning) Performance Exhaust System or:
Large diameter, 3-inch stainless steel construction replaces stock intermediate pipe and muffler, resulting in enhanced exhaust sound and performance. *Manufactured for Subaru of America by Bosal.
-STI Performance Muffler:
Improves vehicle performance and provides a throaty exhaust note plus a sporty aggressive look to your Subaru.
-STI Radiator Hose Set:
High-temperature silicon rubber to withstand the increased rigors of demanding driving. Unlike aftermarket look-alikes, the lower hose features wire construction to help prevent collapsing from negative pressure caused by water temperature change.
-STI Radiator Cap:
High-pressure radiator cap increases pressure rating of cooling system from .9 bar (13 lbs.) to 1.3 bar (18.9 lbs.). Allows for more effient cooling under demanding conditions.
Looking forward to seeing some of your guys' input. Thanks!

I hate to sound like an ass, but I wouldn't pay for any of those. At best, you're talking single-digit horsepower improvements for triple-digit prices. Anybody looking to modify their car is going to do so and leave the warranty in the dust.
You might snag some 16-year-olds looking for a sweet custom ride, yo?

Those parts you are putting on there would catch the eye of certain enthusiats. But for the price increase with the provided parts, I am pretty sure that car would be near the price range of an STi. Good idea, but too costly.

3' TBE, INTAKE, CUSTOM DYNO TUNED from someone famous. that would be flaming.
they do those for EVOs.. factory waranteed buscher racing evo !

Only thing I MIGHT have paid for from the dealer is a short throw shifter.
| salem | 12-01-2005 01:44 PM |
I think that one of the purposes of the TR was to keep the price down. The cost of those items from a dealership plus the cost of installation by the dealership vs the real benefit (maybe with the exception of the sways) wouldn't be worth it in my book.
I mean really, you would add probably over two grand to the sticker after parts, installation, and taxes.

Whosajiggawhat?!?  Since when does heat from the tranny transfer through the shift knob?
My shift knob NEVER gets hot unless it sits outside in the summer.

yea the only thing i would by that was a factory option was a short shifter and i didnt even do that. the price increase wouldnt be worth the gains IMO. again NOT to be a jerk...
| KamiKaziBoarder | 12-01-2005 02:22 PM |
I must agree with most of the people on this thread. For the price increase for all those items. We could find a way to gain more performance with less of a cost using other parts and methods. The horsepower and overall performance increase to cost ratio doesn't make sense in this situation.
| under pressure | 12-01-2005 02:32 PM |
not worth it IMO...its like getting a wrx and going down to a local store front and buying every universal fit peice they have on the floor.
| lugee | 12-01-2005 05:25 PM |
prodrive products maybe?
Prodrive springs, Prodrive stage 2 pack, etc.
I don't tink it goes off from subaru parts since they basically build the WRC and group N cars.

I agree with everyone.
TBE, and tuned are the main things that is needed here.
Idea: Have option to have the mods come with the car, but not pre-installed.
Most people I talk to who owns a suby knows, or has a friend who knows how to mod a suby.

I'm gonna give you guys a little advice...instead of continually raping the Subaru enthusiasts in the AV community with your $upped up car why don't you try a different approach. Why not sponsor a meet or BBQ or something??? Your guys image is in some serious need of help within our community....just my .02

If you guys want to use this car as a "show piece" to sell some of the options then by all means do it. Put them all on there. Use it as a demo. But to try and sell this "decked out" car it is not worth it. It would be $30K (almost an STI) The only fasctory mods that are worthwhile are:
Short shifter
STI suspension (I had it on my old 2002 WRX and it was great!)
Maybe the Bosal/SPT Exhaust system
And just for coolness the titainuim shift knob (which in conjunction with the short shifter) increases feel a little bit.
The rest is just fluff... cool stuff, but fluff.
Customers buying a TR will want to do most of the stuff themselves anyway. But to have a car on the lot for them to drive and feel the difference with an STI suspension, for example, might increase sales.

We are currently trying to do this. There is a thread in the SCIC called, "Santa Clarita Weekly Meet", and we have been trying to get a meet together through there, if you check it out. I am hoping we can get one together soon. Anyone in this thread interested in a dealership meet? If so, I am open for ideas on that also.
And I want to thank everyone for their feedback, thus far--hope to see some more rolling in. :D

This brings to mind one of our other ideas. After modifying the car, and having a few dealership meets, we'll actually unveil the car to those who come to the meets, and have them test drive a regular TR, and the already-modded TR--should be a lot of fun.

....well....after driving a new TR for about a month now......the glaring areas of need are the sock seats which are just HUGE---I'm 5'8" and ~185 and the seats are at least an inch too wide all the way around and maybe a bit more than that across the shoulders and down to the lower back  I'm now shopping for an aftermarket seat.
....and the stock springs are pure mush....the dampers feel ok, but the suspension is way too soft for the capability of the rest of the car. Another member posted that he felt his TR was dangerous in an avoidance maneuver(quick lane change) on the highway...I concur.

dealerships just can't offer competitive prices when it comes to modifications for turbocharged cars.
at the most, do an exhaust with ECU tune and somehow get it warrante'd... otherwise, do it for shows/publicity only.

Hi,
My name is Michael, and as of about 3 weeks ago I am the new Sales Manager for Lancaster Subaru. I have been a Subaru owner since 2000, and have been on this board and its predecessor since then (mostly lurking), and have been to a few meets over the years.
:Start rant:
I would just like to ask you one favor, don't judge me without knowing me and my team. Maybe you should try selling cars a dealer sometime. When every one who calls them self an "Enthusiast" comes in and wants to pay under invoice for a car they "have got to have" so the poor guy trying to make a living, after waiting 3 days and 18 hours for a customer spends the next 2 hours for a $75 commission, did I mention that you don't get an hourly wage. Here comes the funny part, the same guy wants to trade in his car in a year or maybe two and gets all torqued up because he can't get full kelly blue book, and wonders why. This same guy comes in right away with a chip on his shoulder because he "knows how it all works". Funny thing is, he's clueless.
I sell cars, because I like cars.
thats my $12.06
:end rant:
Now that I got that off my chest...you are all invited to stop by anytime to chat, hangout, whatever. Now, we are a business so sometimes we will be busy, selling Subaru's I hope. I have been given a pretty long leash to do what I think is necessary to improve our image with the Subaru community and plan to check the length of that leash regularly. :D
The owner of our dealership is wild about Subaru's, it was his idea to post here and see what you all thought of the mods we are planning to do. We don't plan on maxing out every TR we get, in fact we are only planning the one for now. The main reason...so we can play...like "bdarnblatt" said about the STi suspension on his 2002 WRX, most of the Subaru suspension stuff is really good. How would you like a chance to drive a WRX equipped with this stuff so you can see for yourself, without having to buy it to find out if it will work for you. Sure, some of the stuff is fluff, but not for the $$$, I picked everything and I did it because its what I would buy myself, yes even the STi filter and Hoses! I am working with our service and parts manager on better pricing, I told him, "would you rather sell/install 2 accessories a month for a little less $$ instead of the zero at full $$ you do now?"
I was tempted to go with the full adjustable STi kit, but I am trying to keep the $$ somewhat reasonable, like what would I be willing to pay for. I had the STi stuff on my 2000 2.5RS and could out run a Stock WRX on Bouquet Cyn even though I was at a 62hp deficit :D . We started with the TR because if we added this stuff to a standard WRX it would quickly out price an STi. This one already has the Short Shifter installed. I am tempted to go outside of the Subaru Catalog for one more item other than the wheels and that is the exhaust. Does anyone have experience with the Subaru exhaust offerings? I had a Greddy EVO2 on my WRX and it was very nice, noticeable power increase but very quite compared to my old 5Zigen Fireball.
As for a meet/bbq/pizza party...soon, very soon. We need to finish building our furniture and get the place organized. We just separated from Mazda/Suzuki/Isuzu sales management this week, and are still getting organized. Anyone that's been to our showroom knows its kinda small, and we are currently sharing it with the Lancaster Honda Internet sales guys.
Ah ha! There is one thing that you can do for me if you do stop by...bring a toy for the toys for tots drive! Really!
OMG is it late...this is the longest post I have ever done.
Thank you all for reading, and I hope that you get a chance to come by and drive this car when its done!

I have the STI group N transmission mount, engine mounts, and pitch stopper. I highly recommend installing those. They are cheap, and you can install them cheap if you don't remove the engine, but they change the personality of the car for the better, in an enthusiast's eyes. Shifting and power delivery is alot smoother, and the engine noise is only slightly louder.
For installing without removing the engine:
1. jack up car
2. remove old pitch stopper
3. jack up transmission, swap transmission mount
4. jack up engine with woodblock on oilpan, swap engine mounts
5. put on new pitch stopper

I wouldn't put the adjustables on your demo car, the microbounce from the stock seats combined with a suspension that stiff might drive people away.

You missed the best piece SPT makes!!! The shirt shift kit ~ put in my '05 OBS and it is w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l. BUT, in my opinion (I also work for a Subaru dealer in Oregon) what you are doing defeats the entire intent of Subaru. The TR is a 'stripped' WRX ready to be 'personalized' by the new owner... how do you know whAT he will want?
Plus you take any price point advantage it had away. Bad idea if you ask this guy.

2. The car we chose already has the short shifter :D .
3. Thanks for the input on the adjustables, I thought they would be too expensive anyways.
4. I will look into the mounts, (warranty issues). Uncle Scotty, why no on the pitch stopper? Can you elaborate?
I just ordered wheels and tires today!

Well, I was very intrigued to find out why this "Pitching Stopper" was so bad, and since you had already elaborated elsewhere, I did a search. Funny thing is, all I could find were posts with saying "Don't use it, waste of time" no real opinion that states facts or even a reason, just "Don't use it, waste of time". So I will assume that a "Pitching Stopper" was once very cruel to you and you can't get over it. Perhaps a kick to your crotch would fix it? :p
Oh, thanks for the link to the warranty memo. The mounts and the Stopper are some of the items thathave been moved to the good list, but with so much stuff still in the gray area I needed to sure.
Thansk for the input.

Over the years, I have heard from others on this forum (and in person) who did the pitch stop swap with no appreciable difference. ......in other words, it doesn't appear to be worth it. However, there are plenty of testimonials in regards to the noticeable difference with the motor and trans mounts.
Personally, I wouldn't touch a "specially modified" vehicle from a dealer. Chances are you'll pay too much for add-ons that are otherwise easy (and far cheaper) to DIY.
....well....after driving a new TR for about a month now......the glaring areas of need are the sock seats which are just HUGE---I'm 5'8" and ~185 and the seats are at least an inch too wide all the way around and maybe a bit more than that across the shoulders and down to the lower back  I'm now shopping for an aftermarket seat.
....and the stock springs are pure mush....the dampers feel ok, but the suspension is way too soft for the capability of the rest of the car. Another member posted that he felt his TR was dangerous in an avoidance maneuver(quick lane change) on the highway...I concur.
Why did you buy a tr then? If you don't like the seats you should of bought the regular wrx with the upgraded interior

You are exactly why I stopped coming to this board for so long.
Mindless chatter....Negative attitude....No credentials....But everyone should bow to your wisdom, oh wait... you still have not dispensed any wisdom, only rhetoric.
How hard is it to say, "well, it just doesn't add any real performance benefit over the stock unit, and will only help if you are pushing large hp/tourqe number and the stock part may not handle the power. And unless you are pushing those kind of numbers the extra noise it generates in the cabin is not worth it."
But no, we should all listen to you because we all know your life story and have followed every post you have ever done on this board and a couple others. We should me mindless zombies, just cause Uncle Scotty says.
I can go on like this until they lock the thread but who will that serve, other than you.....so why don't you add something useful, or go post in a different thread. :furious:
Kean...Thanks for the inteligent input on the "pitch stop", this was closer to the kinda of input I hope to receive on a forum like this. And we did take into consideration the pricing issue and we are really not doing it to make a bunch of $$$. We really want to play, and at the same time give people a chance try a car with some of these items installed.
Thanks to all those that offered wisdom.

You could also look into the STI side cowling stays for a little extra bracing in the front of the car. I have a set of aftermarket SCS waiting to be installed and I've heard nothing but good things so far from those who own them.

...look guys.....
there are things that make a difference and things that don't.
some are simple and some not so.....some $$$$ and some $.
i am a big fan of diy's and the simple, inexpensive things that work and I have always tried to install one thing at a time so that I can tell if one single thing actually works or not.
things that work include ALK....rear subframe lockbolts...front 'h' brace..... brake MC brace....group n engine and trans mounts and strut tops.....etc
things that are pointless include changing the pitch stop to the group n one...BTDT...waste of $50....in fact, if you install it wrong and don't torque the bolts properly, it can cause issues including LOTS of noise and vibration in the dash.
i wish i had all the $$$ i wasted on 'stuff' for my car that i bought without researching things more, first.

basically, if youre wanting to attract an true enthusiast, you would have to void the warranty. Tuners want exhaust, turbo upgrade, injector upgrade, engine management ect.
| QuickSilverSTi | 12-23-2005 10:19 PM |
I would not buy it with Subby stuff on it. Seriously, a simple search here and on iwsti.com should show you that not many of us buy that stuff. We tend to take off STi factory stuff and replace it...
| Uncle Scotty | 12-23-2005 10:40 PM |
...there are 'mod friendly' dealers that wouldn't bat an eye at a new car that had suspension stuff on it as long as it wasn't 'slammed' and showed no signs of being raced.....add AP and an exhaust and as long as there was no obvious 'abuse' that had caused an issue.....good to go.
....and then there are dealers that freak out when they see wheels/HP tires on a car and try to claim that that indicates an abused vehicle

Hey .
I think people WOULD pay for suspension modifications
like as one mentioned before Prodrive Springs to get an aggressive stance. <-- makes a huge difference imo.
The rear and front sway bars are a great idea.
Perhaps offer better brake pads? though i know the 06's come w/ much nice pads.
The STi IC hoses & radiator cap is a good choice as well.
other than that, other mods like tbe, etc etc most people would find cheaper stuff on the forums used.. in the end.. a metal pipe is a metal pipe..
Offering Tuning services will definately get you guys rolling too.. -ecutek,utec, ap?
good luck.
I hate to sound like an ass, but I wouldn't pay for any of those. At best, you're talking single-digit horsepower improvements for triple-digit prices. Anybody looking to modify their car is going to do so and leave the warranty in the dust.
You might snag some 16-year-olds looking for a sweet custom ride, yo?
i very much agree with him. aside from the sway bar set, you wont see much performance from those mods. but, the uneducated buyer will easily believe that those mods are worth paying for...

i might also add that the price suspension setups from the dealership are way to high. for what dealerships charge on spring/strut combos, you could buy a nice set of coilovers and possibly even sway bars.

AS much as I would love to go nuts, trying to increase HP is not going to happen on this car, maybe later once I break the ice with the "litigation fearing" upper managment types, with a mildly modified car. We need to stick to the very basic stuff with regards to the engine, hence the STi filter, and SPT exhaust ( I am making progress with maybe being able to put a Greddy EVO2 on it as I had one on my '05 wrx and many at the dealership heard it and did not think it was very loud).
We will be consontrating on making the car handle better and be a tighter package with as little $$ as possible using Subaru Performance parts.
Here is the revised list.
Sway Bars F&R
STi engine & tranny mounts (no pitch stopper)
STi Springs (struts are on the fence, but it costs no extra labor for me to add them if already doing the springs)
Rota Tarmac II wheels 18x7.5 48mm offset (gunmetal) 225/40-18 tires (Falken or Kuhmo probably)
Bottom brace
Strut tower braces F&R
ALK
I wish I could address the seats but what I might like, you might hate, so...
Here is where we need some advice:
since we are doing the springs and maybe the struts, is it worth changing the top hats, with the STi ones.
The bushings, I mean all of them. Has anyone done this? Is it worth it?
I think I can get approval for swaybar links too, any recommendations?
Is there anything we missed that I may be able to get away with?
I would like post the pricing info ( how much it would add to the price of the car installed ) on all this stuff to get a reaction( keep in mind that I will be setting the pricing and need to show some profit, how much is ???), but I am out of town until Monday. We all know that there is stuff out there that is less, but I am trying to get something started here, it will get better, I hope.
I can't wait to drive it, I miss my GC8.
