painting intake manifold (wrinkle finish) part 1

dan avoN7 01-31-2005 05:11 PM

painting intake manifold (wrinkle finish)
i've searched and every post people just recommend wrinkle paint to give the sti intake manifold look but i havent seen posts of people who have actually done this. Do local auto stores like kragen, autozone, etc... carry these paints or do i need to special order it online. Also do you just spray it on and it drys to a wrinkle finish or do you really need to bake it in an oven. any info is appreciated or pictures of a completed manifold (want to know if it actually turns out near the look of the sti one)
enewtabie 01-31-2005 05:15 PM

bump cause I'm interested too...I would like to see a how to also.
greg donovan 01-31-2005 05:44 PM

while you will get hit by the "rice" stick for asing this (but not by me) here is a thread on the legacy central board about doing this:

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=17937&start=0

it starts out w/a question about manifold fitment but eveolves into some tips on how paint the stock one.
wrx plus 01-31-2005 05:50 PM

K-mart, NAPA, and most auto stores sell crinkle coat in a can, you don't have to bake it and it comes out pretty good. A couple of locals here have done it, you can PM Unabomber for more info.
dan avoN7 01-31-2005 07:42 PM

I'll just call around and see which places sell it. Any specific company to look for? Might be "rice" since i am painting it but i do like the way the red looks and don't want to pay for the jdm one since it's the same exact thing, and i might as well paint it while it's off for the install of tgv deletes and perrin fuel rails. I'll be sure to take lots of pics once i'm done, just waiting for the kingpin gt kit to come before i start doing everything. should be a couple weeks until i start working.
enewtabie 01-31-2005 09:19 PM

From the Unabomber..

actually painted a buddy of mine's intake, not mine. We bought the paint at Pep Boys. It was automotive spray paint (whatever brand they sell) designed for engines. I sprayed on 2-3 super light "scratch coats" as a primer, then followed up with 7-8 full coats. We chose a red that most matched the STi red, and it came really, really close as the natural casting marks of the manifold give it the appearance of a red crinkle finish.

Please post this for me as I am SUPER busy tonight and will probably be mostly off line the next two weeks.

Did anyone do this yet? Pics? I'm gonna do some crinkle red pieces. Can you powder coat in "crinkle"?
dan avoN7 06-18-2005 05:06 PM

o wow i totally forgot to post pictures. I couldn't find any crinkle paint locally so i just used some regular red paint from kragen, it was made by duplicolor. It doesn't really match the sti manifold that well but it's decent.
heres one during the buildup (pic best shows how the color looks in person)

Probably a dumb question but is there a gasket for the intake manifold. I am thinking of painting mine but don't really want to tear into it without having everything at hand for the re-install.

Thanks

dan avoN7 06-24-2005 06:48 PM

Yea theres a gasket inbetween the intake manifold and the tgv's and then another gasket inbetween the tgv's and the heads. When i installed the manifold i re-used the gaskets and i dont have any leaks.
BurtonCR 06-24-2005 06:50 PM

VHT makes crinkle paint. I dont know if they still make red though. I do know they make black.
North Ursalia 06-24-2005 07:03 PM

I redid the manifold that came with my v6 v limited motor with VHT crinkle coat, and it looks just like factory (lighting is bad in photo #2):

[EDIT: took the pics down at some point, will have to find them]

I sandblasted the manifold to get the old crinkle coat off (it flakes over time) and then cleaned with a prep solvent, then painted. I did the valve covers in crinkle coat too, for a different look, and the block is getting painted gloss black. It's a special motor, so it gets special treatment before going in !

Yep, I have used the VHT WR paint and it seems to be a spot on match. I could only find it online though and the shipping was a little high as they had it marked as dangerous shipping type item.

Could you paint the manifold without removing?
faeker 06-24-2005 10:51 PM
Could you paint the manifold without removing?
sure....if you want everything around it to be the same color. Best thing to do would be take it off and paint it properly. It's a pain in the butt, but (weird) it will look much better.
synernut 07-20-2005 03:41 AM

Here are some pics of my manifold and the paint I used. I also painted my AEM intake with the same paint. I'll take more pictures once its on the car.

will that krylon or vht hold up to the heat? THat's my only concern.
deegan42 07-26-2005 04:26 PM

Well guys i saw this thread a couple days ago and thought it would be to much down time. Then i was just at a salvage yard today with my buddy who was getting parts for his RSX when i saw this beauty. 100 bucks baby with throttle body and everything. Only 1 TGV though so i dont wont be able to delete them. But now i can get this bastard ported and polished along with some throttle body porting and paint it. I think it was a good deal for 100 bucks. Heres a couple pics. I already started taking a few things off.

^^ what paint did you use? is it semi-gloss or is that because its still wet?
deegan42 07-27-2005 10:03 PM

its glossed because it is wet. I used the same stuff everyone uses. Duplicolor wrinkle red that i bought at auto zone. I hear it is a mission to install these things though. I may upgrade my fuel rail, injectors, and turbo inlet tube while i am having this installed to have everything done while it is off.

that looks really good, i wonder how close it is when you set it next to an sti manifold.
o2sys 08-20-2005 03:50 PM

i would so like to do this but removing and re-installing intake manifold is such a bitch isnt it???
deegan42 08-20-2005 03:59 PM
i would so like to do this but removing and re-installing intake manifold is such a bitch isnt it???
thats why i bought one from a salvage yard for 100 bucks!! Then when i put the red one on i can sell the one i pull off. I love having no down time!!
Ryan
o2sys 08-20-2005 04:31 PM

not so much as a downtime but the actual install i mean....
dan avoN7 08-20-2005 05:11 PM

it's not too bad to remove and reinstall. I was installing fuel rails at the time so i had the manifold off the car anyways. I just picked up a set of sti tgv deletes and am going to have to remove the manifold one more time in the near future. Might consider getting actual crinkle paint or painting it another color.
WRXSIG 08-20-2005 08:23 PM

deegan...hahaha a graebel sticker...they did our last move...
o2sys 08-20-2005 09:09 PM

so anyone know how long that wrinkle red paint lasts?
deegan42 08-21-2005 01:47 AM
deegan...hahaha a graebel sticker...they did our last move...
yea grabel just did out move from miami to asheville!!

I think that the wrinkle paint should last for a long time. Or at lease untill you scratch it up yourself. It seems like very quality stuff from auto zone. I am kind of worried about the install though. It looks like a lot of crap around the manifold.
Ryan
o2sys 08-23-2005 07:28 PM

went to autozone to check out this wrinkle red paint, they do have it, but they sales guy says its not heat resistant.....so???? which wrinkel red paint is heat resistant?
o2sys 08-24-2005 03:58 PM

no one can confirm?
enewtabie 08-24-2005 05:11 PM

Ive been running the krylon red krinkle for a month or so with no problems.
o2sys 08-26-2005 02:04 PM

Planning to tackle this tomorrow, how long will this take and any tips? also i only have 4000 miles on my car do i really have to get new gaskets?

ohh on more...any hidden bolts?

help~
