Problem with Subaru rubber floormat from dealer

Update:
03/12/2007
Today went to change oil and had EXETER SUBARU replace my floor matts. Driver side had holes again. It's an ongoing problem, either a shoes or a driving style.
My dealership suggested that more people must report these problems, because my case if the first one they heard. So if you're experiencing these problems. Go back to dealer, they will replace it for you!

Hi all,
I have an interesting problem that my dealer said they've never seemn.
What happened, few months back I bought all season rubber floormat that fits Impreza and Forester. Few weeks ago, I discovered holes in it. On driver side where pedals are, mat was cracked and extensively worn out.
They replaced and gave me brand new package. It's been about two weeks and I see my new one wearing out very quickly.
Maybe it's my driving style or something. Anything like this happened to anyone?
How can I prevent mat from cracking? Should I put some layer or glue over it or something? I give it about 1 or 2 months before my brand new floor mat will be gone.
This all happens on driver side mat.
Thanks,
Vlad

I have these mats and my pedals never touch the mat at all. I pull them back so i get a more solid pedal feel. That should keep the pedals from chewing them up

OKay #1
there is no all season floor mat FROM SUBARU that fits both the Impreza and the Forester
They are completely different parts.
#2... do you have a photo? Can you get one?
#3 cracking?
I've had my floor mats (subaru oem rubber mats) for 3 years.
(j5010ss300 AND NOW j5010ss400)
No cracking.
what are you cleaning them with?

Weird, I've had mine for 2 winters, and they're like brand new. Are they the Subaru ones, or some aftermarket ones? The Subaru ones are like an inch thick, I can't imagine how you'd chew through them that fast.

i seem to remember a thread with people complaining how cheap they were and it was easier to buy cloth mats every 2 years or so

I have the all weather mats and have for a number of months now......no problems with wearing. Only complaint that I have is that they tend to slide forward all the time and I have to constantly reach down and pull them back from under the pedals.

What on earth are you doing to these mats that they need to be replaced annually?
Mine are stomped on, rained on, mucked on, snowed on....
and they look like new???

#1 I have Impreza '06 and on the floor mat it says IMPREZA/FORESTER. I think my dealer called them all season. But who cares. You know what I am referring to, it's the floor mat that you buy at any subaru dealer. Rubber thick with SUBARU signage engraved on it.
#2 I am sorry, I should have taken before my dealer took it from me. Cracks were right where my heels are, I suspect it's my driving style.
#3 I just clean them with water, no special cleaning solutions.

I designed solution for that. I used a piece of rubber, superglued it to the mat and attached it to the hook under the seat, works perfectly.
p.s. I will try to make a photo for you all. I already see signs of wear as of now.

Jamie, maybe it's a driving style. I never noticed I am too aggresive on pedals. However, after a week or my mats being replaced I noticed they have extensive wear already.
| wrxstiracer04 | 09-07-2006 09:55 AM |
Wow, you must be wearing sandpaper for soles on your shoes. :) I couldnt imagine that being an easy task as thick as the rubber is on those mats

I know it's quite bizzaire.

dudes that is weird
maybe my little feet just have no effect :D
FWIW, I'd still like a part number or to see said mats.
Our Subaru OEM mats DO NOT SAY IMPREZA/FORESTER on them ;)

My winter mats are cracked on the right side. They creep up and that side gets "bent" and it just cracks to bits. If they stay flat it seems ok but its not easy. I'll probably dish out for '07 mats this winter with the hook.

I think my heel on the thick rubber mat is wearing out prematurely.
Everytime I clean out my car there is pile of rubber in the ribs.

| fireball_jones | 09-07-2006 10:10 AM |
The only thing I could think of is if you're using them in the summer, the rubber might wear faster in higher temps?
It could be your shoes too, all of mine have flat soles, so probably very little wear.

| Venu | 09-07-2006 10:23 AM |
It may very well depend on the shoe you're wearing. Shoe with soft rubber soles will be easier on the mats than nice dress shoe with rock hard soles. I hate it when my wife drives her car with high heels on.
But then again, that's what floor mats are for. To protect the floor.

my rubber mats cracked as well.. lasted about 9 months or so before my right heel wore thru and the creases split at the edges. Dealership said i wore high heels or cut them myself and therefore wouldnt replace them for free.

I've had mine for 2 years. oem all-weather mats from subaru. no cracks and they clean up and look like new. Maybe you are tracking a chemical onto them from your feet?

Unlikely, I am almost never around any chemicals that would get to the mats via shoes.

One of the guys local to me got his all weather mats as a dealer freebie when he bought his '06 2.5i. He has had his car since Jan.'06, and his heels have worn through the rubber mats already as well.

I don't want to say I learned to drive a stick because I had driven sticks before, but, for the most part, my STi was the car I *really* learned to drive a stick in.
Anyway, for the first 3 or 4 months, I would put on my Adidas tenis shoes which are really thin and flexible, kind of like a racing shoe, but not really, then when I got to work, I'd put on my office shoes and go in.
Eventually I just started going inside with my Adidas because no one at Microsoft cares

Wow, its definitely whatever you guys are doing. I have had my rubbers for 5 years now, and they are in brand new condition. My second set of rubbers in suby #2 are in equally good shape, but only 3 years old. Maybe the 2006 rubbers suck for some mysterious reason, but my experience lines up with subiegals with these things. They have been nigh indestructable and show no signs of wear other than being filthy and in need of a bath.
| S14guy | 09-08-2006 11:06 AM |
Any 2006 rubber mats should have come with a hole in the drivers side on for the hook thats on the floor by the gas filler pull thingie. Maybe these dealers that are "throwing" them in for free are giveing you 2-3 yr old mats that have been sitting in parts forever, causing dry rot type stuff that would make them easy to fall apart. Every set of rubber mats ive seen in past year have had the drivers side hole for the hook thingie.....

Thank you WebMasterP for confirming my train of thought. I also wear Adidas "Goodyear" tennis shoes to drive in, and then put on my work shoes when I get here. Yes, it is more effort, but I dont feel like driving in clunky dress shoes is all that safe for me. (Slippery soles, wide width etc.) In addition, I do feel that these shoes dont damage the rubber mat either...just my opinion.
You guys might want to consider some sort of rubber protectant to help preserve the material...however be careful what you use so that it doesnt make the pedals/floor slippery.

Yeah I realise driving in driving shoes better and comfortable but changing it all the time is kinda crzy idea to me honestly. Besides I don't have that much level of discomfort in regular shoes to change shoes all the time.
| Astroguy | 09-08-2006 06:40 PM |
We discussed this problem in another thread before. These mats are great because they're ribbed and all the water and dirt will get trapped in those ribs. The problem is the ribs are hollow on the other side of the mat, so they can deflect easily.
I assume the mat is wearing out where your right heal hits the mat (since it's always on the gas pedal). Probably what's happening is the weight of your foot it compressing and flattenting those ribs so they crack and break down at the rib corners over time. A solution is to make it so those are solid rubber ribs, instead of hollow. Do this by turning the mat over, and filling those ribs up with black silicone on the back side where your heals rest. You'll get a more solid base for your foot to rest on, the rubber ribs won't bend as much and they won't break down.
You could do this on the exposed side as well for further protection, it won't look as nice...but when the silicon wears off you'll be able to just put some more back on. For me, putting it only on the backside was enough to alleviate the problem.

What the hell are you people doing to these mats?
My Forester has 45k on the mats, they are left in year round, and subjected to oil/grease/brake cleaner/coolant/brake fluid and whatever else my shoes track in from the shop on a daily basis. They have been in for 6 rallycross, 3 track days, and 2 autocross as well. I never use any cleaners or conditioners on them, just spray em off with a hose a few times a year.
Prior to that I have had 3 other sets and never had a problem with those.

As I've promised, these are the pics of my AWESOME rubber mats that I've used for 9 months. The shoes I wear: Asics running shoes and airwalk shoes.
I don't think there's a problem with these brands right?
Let the pictures tell the story:

YEah, totally same story with me. But my dealership gave me a new set of mats for free. However they said it's the first and only time they'll do it, they said they wouldn't be able to keep replacing it indefinitely.
I have to tell you though, my cracks were identical to yours.
I strogly believe it's a driving style. But I might be wrong.
And finally J-Chow, see if your dealer will give you a new set for free.
dudes that is weird
maybe my little feet just have no effect :D
FWIW, I'd still like a part number or to see said mats.
Our Subaru OEM mats DO NOT SAY IMPREZA/FORESTER on them ;)

I'm betting he got some of the FS320 Universal Mats...
...I know they're not commonly in production, but they were old school for the Impreza/Forester applications.

I have the all weather rubber mats in my Sti since I work on job sites and I have had them for two years and they look like the day I bought the car and I am a pretty agressive driver on the pedals. I also noticed a few years ago with another car, I was workin on a few job sites in which they were cleaning brick with a solution of watered down muratic acid, it was enough that over a few months it began to eat away at my mats, carpet, rubber and all. Perhaps it is also something at your work?
| f1vlad | 09-10-2006 08:45 PM |
No there's nothing at my work, I work in an office environment.... I think it's shoes then. Maybe shoes compound too hard that is chewing mat's rubber.

Interesting thread. :) I've got some left over industrial strength velcro laying around after my stereo install. I'll put one side on the mats and see if the move anymore. . . it is quite annoying have to readjust them every single time I get in the car.
Will report back tonight.
Very informative forum, btw. :)

I would post pics, but mine Look EXACTLY like the pics already posted. Same part number too. I have to clean my carpeting in the footwell nearly every week from the shavings. Not cool. I wear running shoes, dress shoes, topsiders, skate shoes, driving shoes, just about every kind of shoe known to man.

J/K .. Actually my wife just purchased an '06 Wagon and it has the same floor mats in them... If it's not your driving "style" it could be big, fat feet, like mine :) .. I have the Black cloth floor mats with the embroidered STi down one side, and my size 14's have worn a spot through the plastic foot pad area and are starting to wear through the carpeting...
big feet/shoes = more weight in one spot, pivoting back n forth for gas break
who knows.. good luck!
Jason

Update:

Today went to change oil and had EXETER SUBARU replace my floor matts. Driver side had holes again. It's an ongoing problem, either a shoes or a driving style.
My dealership suggested that more people must report these problems, because my case if the first one they heard. So if you're experiencing these problems. Go back to dealer, they will replace it for you!

I've had my OEM all-weather mats for a year and a half now, with no more wear than a bit of an indent where my heels lie - no cracking, no wearing.
Vlad, we should compare our mats to see if they're the same if we can ever finally get one of these Northern MA/Southern NH carPC meets going.

Yeah, can't just buy one mat unfortunatelly.
| disaster999 | 03-13-2007 11:58 AM |
the only problem i have with those mats are they dont really grip the carpet that well. they keep sliding forward. i even made sure the hole is on that pin on the floor really good, but somehow it finds a way of coming off.
| f1vlad | 03-13-2007 12:34 PM |
EXETER SUBARU gave me replacement mats, new style with a hole. And I really love it, seems to work fine for me.
