Angel Eyes part 1

Angel Eyes

1 Attachment(s)
I've seen this on BMWs driving around, but never really knew what they were? How do they get this glow around the lights? I think it looks pretty sick. I wonder if I could do this to my WRX if I got a dual lamp headlight?

I've heard its some prism xenon technology... lemme see what I can find...

<sherifx-away> how do the angel eye HIDs work?
<FredR> the angel eyes are for self leveling
<sherifx-away> explain
<FredR> when a fat a$$ like me crawls in the back seat, the rear of the car drops
<RandyC> understatement ;)
<sherifx-away> ah, the HIDs readjust themselves?
<FredR> the angel eyes determine this and adjust the lights to proper alinment
<sherifx-away> But how do they do it?
<FredR> magic, stark naked magic!

...thats what the z3 owners tell me, I'm assuming that there is an internal prism that is controlled by some sort of servo system that adjusts the position of the prism to compensate for any change in the front or back height... The angel eye portion of it

( OO \ | / OO )

may just be some sort of redirection of the light towards the outer edges of the circular lighting element... probably not necessary, but then again, why would BMW do it? Hope this helps...

sherif

ps. I prolly don't think you'd be able to get this on yer scooby w/ out shellin out in excess of $10,000
JB1 12-17-2001 12:17 AM

Those are taken from a five series

Thats my friend's car Jon Sibal. He took a part a 5 series light housing thats has the angel eyes. You basically just bore out the original e36 housing and then sodder in the 5 series lights. The wiring is the tricky part.People are now selling these as kits. Check out www.dtmpower.net or www.e46fanatics.com and do a search you should be able to find more info. Also I have seen on a e46 coupe a Neon rope version glued around a headlight. Yeeesshhh. not good.
JNasty 12-17-2001 12:19 AM

BMW calls those "Corona Rings." It's BMWs fashionable way of using DRLs. I guess BMW realized that no one actually likes the look of most DRLs, so they decided to make them at least look cool. As of right now, I think they are only using them on the 5 series, but I would think the new 7 would have them. It's got every other car gadget and goody you can think of, why not those. I do like the look of them. Seen a few in town with them. Don't really stand out in daylight, but on overcast days they look really sweet.
PhreeZe 12-17-2001 12:22 AM

Aright angel eyes first came out for the new 5 series. But BMW enthusiast wanted them so what happen was they bought the OEM 5 series lights and took them apart and put them in there 3 series which takes alot of work. Only few did that but then some companys started making them only for BMW. So some people bought them. You need ellipsoids to have them. For a full kit, I think they are about $600. For just the angel eyes with no ellipsoids are about $350. Please dont get them on your WRX. They should only be on BMW. That would be like getting a M3 emblem and slapping it on your WRX. Sadley, some civics have been seen having them on but with a red glow. BTW I really didnt get what that guy said about the angel eyes but its a round peice that goes around the the actual light projector. Again I say please dont get them. It would look wrong. But I would get a HID kit. Anyways the only way you could get angel eyes is research how the BMW angel eyes work and do some custome work. Hope I could help. Oh and sorry for the poor spelling and grammar. Been workin on a project all day and cant think straight.

You think? I mean, lights are lights! I can't imagine they would look right though, because most of the twin light kits don't leave any room around the lights for a "ring".

Thanks guys!

sherifx 12-17-2001 10:36 AM

I, with some financial backing and some help from a few engineers could prolly design and build an "Angel Eye" headlamp replacement for the WRX. There would be a single "Eye" in the lower right (of the left bulb when looking straight on), and in the lower left (of the right bulb). If anybody is interested, lemme know.

Drac9 12-17-2001 11:26 AM

Haha! I thought you were gunna ask about that chick flick Angel Eyes. But, anway, yeah those do look pretty sweet, but not for a rex.
nqwan 12-17-2001 11:35 AM

i use to drive a 2001 525i. they come on when you turn on your parking lights. a long whiles back someone photochopped them onto the oldstyle impreza, so maybe a search will turn it up.
Seraph 12-17-2001 01:31 PM

Well they wouldn't work based on the fact that alot of people aspire to the prodrive/morrette look, and the angel eyes would make the car look like a r-rocket.....but flow-wise......the rex has lots of round curves around the light assembly, so it would work if they weren't huge.
sherifx 12-17-2001 01:49 PM

make it look like a r-rocket?! HOW?! I don't get your logic here... its a technological advancement based on superior lighting control... a r-rocket is just full of superfulous gadgets that have no end purpose and ridiculous body mods, that again serve no purpose... if we had one of the most advanced and efficient lighting systems on our cars, I'm sorry, it wouldn't lead to r-dom, it would lead to safer driving... genius.

aov 12-17-2001 02:04 PM

sherif - if you could make a set that would be great. I think plenty of people would be interested if you tried to sell them.

If not a working set, could you make a drawing :)

Thanks,

-anders

sherifx 12-17-2001 02:12 PM

aov, I'd love to make them, I just need the financial backing... so if anybody wants to fund such a product, please let me know. I would get feedback from all of you guys so that it would fit your tastes, not just mine. Additionally I believe in only using the best materials so though you do pay a high entrance fee, you are not disappointed once you get in to the party, in other words, it won't break or fail ;). I'll start looking in to the possibility of making them. TTL

sherif

[edit] aov, you wanna propose the idea to fellow i-clubbers and guage the reaction and PM me... lemme know what they say. Thanks.
M E R C U R Y 12-17-2001 06:19 PM

my friend got bmws
Will has angel eyes on his 325i

hella makes a angel eye kit for older 5 series cuz this girl just got them, but they point a little to the right cuz theyre european lights

and there is a kit coming out for the 3 series to replace the stock lights, they are being marketed as demon eyes from what they tell me.
HubbieScooby 12-17-2001 06:52 PM

i was wondering if you could make some for the GC8...i think it looks pretty sweet....the housing would be easier right?? thanx

hugh:alien:
Seraph 12-18-2001 12:33 AM

r-rocket comes from the fact that i think alot of people on here are too sensitive about swaping parts from one car into another, because our cars are supposed to be "unique" and we're not really supposed to mess with them like that, i do think that they are a technological advancement and i do like them, just wanted to go over to the right a little bit to see if i ruffle any feathers ;)
Seraph 12-18-2001 12:36 AM

btw, i'm toying with the idea of putting plastic body armor on my car in the winter so i don't get it all messed up while driving off road........i'm a techno freak =P

feel free to respond if you think thats a "ridiculous body mod"
trboCIVIC&WRX 12-18-2001 11:24 AM

sherif-

I might be interested in getting involved to a degree...

I am interested in different headlights, and I havent seen anything that I would spend a dime on (except STis) But I am not overly interested in the "angel eye" system....

let me know.

sherifx 12-21-2001 12:02 AM

Well I started talkin today with my friend who knows all there is to be known about BMW's and it is possible to make a set of Angel Eyes for the Subaru... I think I may start working on it... it'd be interesting to see if it works... I'll have some concept sketches I think soon... 'd love to hear some more input from you guys... ttl

Scoobie Newbie 12-21-2001 01:01 AM

No helpful input other then, good luck and I hope you'll publish your results on this forum when your successful.
sherifx 12-21-2001 01:41 AM

the idea involves using a set of Hella Micro XE Xenon lights and a set of Hella Micro DE halogen lights... heh

im interested if your making some for the GC8....it looks so sweet:D :D

STEVESblueWRX 12-21-2001 08:38 AM

how about this

If you put alot of bright LED's around the light. It would give a similar look??? And you can use any color LED's so you can have a more custom look...? Just a thought.......
paulnose 12-21-2001 10:29 AM

They have aftermarket ones available for the 3 series, The angel eye's use a polycarbonate ring, lit with LED's at the end. The LED light travel in the ring, serrations on the back of the ring disperse the light. The aftermarket ones for the 3 series cost $350.

Ummmm then those are some ghetto a$$ pieces of crap.... the real Angel Eyes has a Circle that extends from the outer housing of the headlight in which Neon is contained. When the headlights are turned on the neon is excited by the electricity flow, thereby creating that glowing circle... doing it with LEDs imho would look f-in stupid...

sherif

I'm sorry but $350 is way to cheap to get a real Angel eye conversion... to get a true one from a BMW you're lookin at $5000...
paulnose 12-21-2001 11:35 AM

actually the bmw 5 series assemblies are available from bavarian autosport as an upgrade for 1500 with HID, 850 for regular Halogen. Oh and these are for the entire assembly.

So Stop thinking BMW is using some crazy stuff and look at the disassembly of an actual angel eye unit from a 5 series http://www.apexcone.com/Lighting/AngelEyes/AngelEyes.html

Hope that helps,

-Paul

PS. I'm from a BMW family, and I've supercharged a 3 series from scratch. Also my friend has his angel eyes on the way, for both his 328, and his GF's mom's 740. So, maybe I'm full of doggy doo doo, but i've taken more pieces off a BMW then you've probably taken off your subie.

Are these Angel eyes just for looks or do they actually provide a good amount of light to see and be seen?
bdowell 12-22-2001 07:01 PM

Cool website

One smooth suby! Especially love seeing the show pic and off road pic side by side. Talk about from one extreme to the other, bling-bling clean to mud everywhere! :) What's up with the air horns? How do they sound? Might have to look into that myself:D

Anybody know what the diffrence in dia. is between the BMW and Impreza lights? Will the rings from a beemer fit? If the rings are plastic could you heat and bend them to a smaller dia? Looks like a cool mod.

what do you guys think of a design like this:
RBPWRX 12-23-2001 01:58 AM

http://www.omnitecmotorsports.com/
Basshead 12-23-2001 02:43 AM

the air horns rule..sounds like a very very loud "euro" sound..I made a lady that was entering into my lane obliviously jump in her seat after i laid on them...was hilarious...

ya that mud shot was damn fun...my buddy's cabin last february; about 20 degrees out
Booster 12-23-2001 01:39 PM

I love the way they look, if it cant be duplicated on the headlights why not make them on the fog lights?

I would by them for my car, they look good, much better then those stupid LED washer jet things.

They look very intimidating on the road.

um.....ya...
trboCIVIC&WRX 12-24-2001 10:34 AM

Sherif-

I think you are on the right track... I like it.

I think it will require a little fudging to get it to fit in the actual holes tho.

looks good so far...
vRsik 12-24-2001 11:34 AM

You could put those on any round projecors that are somwhat the same size as a new BMW 5 series!

Here's an idea how to do it!

Sauceboy01 12-25-2001 04:21 AM

We should have someone, or some company make these for our WRX's... I doubt they'd ever fit on the stock lights, but i'm sure they can figure something out for the morrette's... easy..

Wow, didn't realize there was so much interest in these lights. Before I posted I did a search on "Angel Eyes" with only a few results.

Looks like "Imprezer" just started working on these too:
