anyone have any un-shared mods? part 1

Murray 07-19-2002 02:12 PM

anyone have any un-shared mods?

does anyone out there have any mods that only you, or a few people have, none that are posted in the mod's section, but your own little mods that really personalizes your car or makes it stand out among others.
feel free to let it out if you dont mind someone stealing it, lol.
i dont know what made me think of this, but i noticed when i looked at an old pic of my car, i had carbon fibre vinyl on most of my trim, which mae it different from every other 97L because you couldnt get C.F for my style interior. since then i removed the vinyl..
im kinda interested in the idea of Brushed ALuminum trim..anyone know how to paint flat black plastic to look like this? recommendations on paint and such would be great.

just curious to see what this brings up.

I have mentioned these but here...
12v outlet between seats in a WRX (not even a factory option)
daytime runing fog lights (looks tough)
a "quick disconnect" sub box so I can have my trunk too if I need it...(lots of silver & gold plated R/C car battery connectors)
and others I can't legaly disclose:p

I've got one of the prototype rear kartboy shift bushings, try to find that! :p

Oh, I also have a shaved trunklid and antenna, now thats unique! LOL! :D

I just finished putting TV's in each one of my sunvisor's. Passenger and drivers side. The Visors are out of the car right now but I am installing them tonight after work.

The TV's are 1/2 inch thick and 5 inches wide. It looks great, I am mounting my DVD player in the trunk. That is super-small too.

EDIT: Hey I just noticed your in Exton. I live in Glenmoore and am always in Exton. I have a WRB WRX. Give me 2 weeks and you will see a very unique car. Bodykit, wheels, spoiler, springs, the whole deal.
kenchan 07-19-2002 05:01 PM

its a subtle mod, but i did paint the stock grill trim (grill is black) and put on a blue i-emblem. :D
Murray 07-19-2002 08:03 PM

Str8out.. i think i seen you a few times.
do you know who owns the silver WRX that works at netsche Industires? i go to school across the street, and i drive the Mystic Blue(light blueish turquiose) L with WRX wheels, and occasionally a black primer RS hood.
soon to have the painted RS hood, and STi ver. 6 wing.
im mostly in West Chester anymore, work at Carousel Toyota, stop by some afternoon and visit, hehe, you can even detail your car if no one important is around!

lcd screen filling the double din area the radio used to be in
radio in the area the cigarette lighter used to be in
4 driving lights behind the upper grill
stock emblem re-painted to a white background instead of black
my variation of the "headlight mod", painting the entire reflector area around the blinkers
platinum flames tinted into my 5% black windows on the rear

i like doing custom stuff :D

^ looks pretty sweet, id be afraid my car would be broken into with that showing.

Ethan...thats one of hte mods i was planning on doing myself, did you just use any pneumatic cylinder? or was tehre a specific car you got it off of, and did you have to make a special bracket?
i work for Toyota, and see that the Camry's have them on the V6 models, i figured i could steal that design and try it out on my car. i had a friend that did it on his VW GTI as well.

now that i think about it, im converting my L interior to black, with front RS seats...that kinda different from the average L, nothing super special though.
oh, i have the left part of my dash lit with red bulbs, and the very right side(fuel guage and 1/4 of Speedo) lit in green, lol. its like christmas! gotta convert it all over to blue soon.

I've got a trunk cow that says "Eat Mor Chikin" on it  With it, my butt dyno says I have at LEAST 10 more hp...

Oh, and the cow was free. I got it at a Stars game along with about 10 free chicken sandwich coupons :D
K Rock Impreza 07-20-2002 11:50 AM

I have prototype carbonfiber muffler. Its 1 of 5. I don't remember who made it though. The guy at the shop where I bought it from told me its the only one on the east coast. I'm sure there are more out there, but I haven't seen any with my style muffler. :D
SWEETWRX 07-20-2002 02:13 PM

I mounted my apex controllers in the glove, and TT where the ash tray goes....real clean and not advertised!....will post pics when I get home......oh and a full fake floor in the hatch area where my 2 10s are, the floor is still functional and looks great too....again....will post pics when i get home........
Hazdaz 07-20-2002 08:59 PM

-Folding rear seat (most useful mod)
-Painted steering wheel to match plastic trim arounnd radio (fovorite mod).
-2 tone color scheme (body kit is 'gun metal' color while rest of car is Silver).
-Not quite as unique, but still uncommon on WRX is Reverse ingiglo guages, AL wing (painted same as kit), and eyebrows for headlights
lagnwagn 07-20-2002 11:20 PM

I've been thinking of powder-coating the roof rails on my wagon to match. But I haven't decided if that would look good or not. I don't want to take them off, because I need my ski-rack in the winter, but color matched rails might look good.
DustinR 07-21-2002 12:45 AM

the cheapest mod i ever did and still prolly one of my favorite is a bunge cord on the trunklid holding a roll of papertowels:)

-Dustin

Edit: be sure to get the bunge with the plastic hooks or it rattles.
Murray 07-21-2002 08:25 AM

Hazdaz, can you share how you did your fold down seat mod?
i looked into doing this to my car, but didnt see how it would work, so i decided to leave it as is. not sure if the WRX is different in the rear seat area, but im sure with some pointers, i can figure this out.
i need my seat to fold down, i dont like removing it everytime i wanna throw my bike in my car.
also, i was thinking about doing that 2-tone body idea when i get my lip, skirts and spats... charcoal gray under blue would look neat, but i will probly jsut go all blue.
--
i just upgraded my front seats to RS seats...SOO much nicer, hehe.
--
Dustin...i love those little bungee cords, i get em for free from work, Hyundai(i work at a oyota/hyundai dealership as a detailer) uses them to hold hte protective paper on the hood oftheir cars, every one i detail, i snag both cords, theres a million uses!!!

I have a custom made (by me) carbon fiber vent scoop on the passenger side of my hood to deflect cool air into my JC Sports short ram intake. I've made two others, one for Ghomer1 (still haven't seen a pic of it installed though), and the other may be going to PURE EPI next weekend. I also carbon fibered my gauge cluster bezel.

BRIAN
yebokmj 07-21-2002 06:35 PM

60mm Gauge pod

I have an MY97 which doesn't have an area for a gauge pod. I removed the part that surround the climate controls and contains the vents. I then cut the vents out used fiberglass to close the area that vent once ocuppied and then I drilled it for three 60mm gauges. After some sanding of the resin and a quick painting in Flat Black paint it looks great.

Hazdaz I wana hear how you got the rear seats to fold down.
Hazdaz 07-21-2002 09:06 PM

I know i've already posted pix of the mod a while back.
Basically i gutted teh rear 1/2 of the car, reinforeced the seat back and found some hinges to use to make it folding.
I already had researched the WRX wagon, and its rear seat is narrower by like 2 or so inches. So that could have worked too if i wanted to try it.
The seat looks basically stock when its up - except for the bottom of the seat is pushed forward about an inch or so (makes room for the hinge) - which basically makes the seat more reclined. When down, I re-carpetted it with carpet thats really close to the regular trunk carpet, so it matches pretty good.
Like i said before, it is my most "useful" mod, I have my bike back there like ALL the time - I actuallly can't remebeer when the last time i had the rear seat up.
128d 07-21-2002 10:09 PM

I did a search but you post did not turn up anything but 2 posts, neither of them are your post about this mod.
CTKAG 07-21-2002 10:21 PM

1.) Painted my windshield washer nozzles body color with touch-up paint.

2.) Relocated clock to ashtray location when I put in guage pod.

3.) WRX wagon rear cargo net mounted in trunk.
paul99se 07-21-2002 10:44 PM

Any special tips on securing the Wagon cargo net in the trunk? Have pics?

Sounds good. I just put in the passenger side LCD screen tonight. I ran all the wires but it is not completed. I might have to stop by your work sometime, do you work full-time? I do, I work 9-5 weekdays.

I know I have seen you before. I will keep an eye out.

Later on..........

twitch 07-22-2002 10:25 AM

My favorites?

1) Cutting off the little white tags on the front seat belts. They seriously flapped when the windows were down. Really annoying.

2) Took the trunk carpet out & traced its shape on standard carpet padding. Cut out the pad & glued the two together. Nice thick padding that is really quiet.

3) Installed my Garmin Streetpilot GPS on the dash. I don't get lost as much now.

Paul99SE-

You need 4 of those trunk liner clips and something to hold the bootom part of the net. I bought a cheap lashing strap with 'D' rings and cut the straps about 3" from the rings. Then attached them to the trunk liner. It won't hold something heavy but is fine for groceries and the like.
128d 07-22-2002 09:52 PM

twitch I really like that idea about that carpet padding. I think I am going to do that tommrow.

(I also cut those damn tags off about a week after I bought the car :D)
obyone 07-22-2002 11:01 PM

Changed the color of the alternator/power steering belt cover from flat black to shiny aluminum. :D I have both headrest's embroidered with the Impreza 2.5 RS logo, and -because the trunk didn't have a light- I installed two neon's and am using them as trunk lights. I installed them in such a way that you can't see the actual lights unless you climb inside the trunk and look up. Oh yeah, almost forgot, I have two...yes...Two factory subwoofers installed in my car.
128d 07-22-2002 11:37 PM

obyone got any pics. I wana see how the engine bay looks.
Murray 07-22-2002 11:38 PM

oh, i got Scooby(talking one) buckled up in the back seat of my Scoobie, will post a pic tomorrow, its night time now and the interior light burnt out!
doesnt anyone else have pics of anything they did?

twizzstyle 07-22-2002 11:48 PM

i used to have white gauges i made myself on my computer, and printed on photo paper. They looked REAL nice, and the stock gauges showed through at night! But now I installed some actual indiglos. I do, however, have some fatty eyeliners made out of electric tape! Like three strips on the headlight. At first it was a joke my friend did, but they looked so nice, I left them!

How about mesh foglight cover for RS?
Detroit wagon 07-26-2002 05:27 PM

Obyone, how do the two subs sound? How did you wire them? Does having two subs increase the overall wattage output?

John
NateDogg 07-27-2002 05:56 PM

those fog covers are AWESOME!!!

as for my mods. i have my greddy emanage mounted in my glovebox with a hidden blue neon tube lighting it up. i also have a 7 inch widescreen flushed where the stock radio should go with an HKS camp running to it and my radio is in the guagepod. (im pulling the screen out cuz i sold it so i dont know what im gonna put there now). i also recarpeted my trunk in all black and made the floormat so there is a 35 inch wide subaru stars logo popping out of it. next weekend im going to redo the headliner in all black and paint all the stuff on the ceiling black. then im covering the seats in black leather with charcoal suede insterts and im going to make the doors match the insert. im also going to install a small neon tube in the door just above where my speakers are mounted so when i turn them on youll see the speaker gow but you wont see the tube.

Nate

Interior Painting

I painted all the interior trim and the back portion of the center console Silver. The interior is now the dark grey and silver two tone. I love the look.

Since i have a wagon there was plenty of room for a 10' sub in the back so I built a small case for the sub and bolted it to the rubber mat in the back to keep it from moving.

My amp is bolted to the back of the seat just behind the sub. With the cargo shade closed you would never know it is back there.

I also have a quick release sub box so that it can be removed if needed.
Rojorex 08-06-2002 01:55 PM

I replaced the two map light bulbs with red ones. Actually, I just bought those bulb condoms and slipped them over the original bulbs. The red is great on your eyes. Your eyes do not have to adjust to the darkness once again after you turn them off as they would with the original bulbs. It kind of looks cool too.
128d 08-06-2002 02:07 PM

Rojorex where did you find the bulb condoms?
Rojorex 08-06-2002 02:21 PM

IIRC, AutoZone... or was it Advance Auto Parts (?).

They shouldn't be too hard to find. Any of your major auto parts place should have them.
Murray 08-06-2002 03:25 PM

Omio...
can you get pics, i was planning on doing this soon, but want to know how its gonna come out first. i believe since you have a 97, our interiors are the same, and this means you dont have the center top storage bin like the 98's had correct?
if you can get pics, i would appreciate it.. ive been meaning to get around to paintng all the black to silver, now that im off of school, i think its time i should.
alo, can you find a color match for the dark grey our console's are? i picked up a dark gray before and it turned out to be a lighter gray.. i guess we need a charcoal interior color paint?

I have a few requests here, first, Ethan do you have any more info on your phuematic hood lifters, or even some pics of them? I would really like to do something like this. obyone I too want to add a neon light in my trunk and I would like to know where you mounted it and where you taped its power from. I made a minor mod for my garage door opener. I had the standard Genie three-button operator. I opened it up and took out the circuit card. The three buttons were one solid piece of rubber, so I cut the big one loose. In the console right under the e-brake, I drilled a hole slightly bigger than the button. I then bought a rubber grommet to go in the hole and give a clean look. I took a little bubble wrap and place it on the floor under the console and laid the circuit card on it right under where the hole in the console is. I then replaced the console. The grommet is black and you can paint the button black. It's clean, inconspicuous and functions perfectly. Not only is it better/easier than having to carry the unit, this position is even more convenient to where your hands are than clipping that thing on your visor.
kenchan 01-13-2003 03:52 PM

wired up a blue LED to illuminate the ignition
keyhole. works parallel with the dome lights.
very cool. :D

parts cost: approx $5.
installation: pita, but worth the trouble.
bjteel 01-13-2003 09:52 PM

sonicblue,

I have my console and genie remote apart and am attempting to do the same.

Instead of buble wrap I might affix mine to the bottom of the console.

What kind of grommet do you have? Pics?
