Are you happy with your stock seats?

it seems everyone has a case of the grass is greener on the other side of the fence syndrome when it comes to seats.
i would love to have WRX seats on my 94 sport sedan. some one in a L sedan wants SS seats and the WRX wants STi seats and the STi owner wants expensive recaros.
no one is happy w/what they have it seems.
so the question is are you happy w/your seats?

The stock seats were pretty supportive, but I wanted more lateral support by my shoulders. I got a set of Recaro Speed seats and now all is good. :)

I love the stock seats in my 02 and the only reason I would swap out for a Recaro or Bride is just for the bling bling factor they have.

I like my 05 seats. But I went from a Ford Escort -> Honda Civic -> Impreza. So you can see why I like them. Although Honda had some pretty nice seats for a 94'.

I went from a '96 Sunfire to an '04 WRX. I like the seats very much in the WRX. I do, however, love the look of the STi seats.
| REX8 | 03-07-2005 05:35 PM |
The sti/04+ wrx seats are significantly wider than 02-03 seats. If your of normal weight...many sti/wrx owners are wishign they had 02-03 seats
| Siper2 | 03-07-2005 06:20 PM |
Yeah I agree. The chain really goes like this:
L owners wished they had RS seats.
RS owners wished they had '02-03 WRX seats, or JDM STi V4-6 seats.
'04+ WRX/STi owners wished they had either '02-03 seats, or aftermarket ones.
:)
I had '98 WRX seats in my RS for about six months, but had to sell them since I needed the money (about a month ago). They were identical, except for fabric, to the V4-6 STi seats.
Liked them, but since my stock seats are covered in leather, I'd eventually want to cover those seats too. In hindsight, I think I ended up better off. Spending $500-1000+ on new leather for the JDM WRX seats would've been somewhat silly, when I can get Recaros or Cobras, which are comparatively MUCh better, for a more worthwhile cost.

My '02 WRX seats are VERY comfortable for me. Granted I'm 5'5 and all ;)
| moonlightspoon | 03-07-2005 06:46 PM |
I really like the seats in my '01 RS. They could be a bit more snug, since I'm skinny, but I don't have any plans to switch. Plus I love the fabric with the carbon-fiberish checkerboard pattern. And yeah, the STi seats suck hard.
| Diode663 | 03-07-2005 07:43 PM |
I like the seats.. but they could have a little more bolstering to really hold you into the seat my shoulders move a tad too much for my liking. I wanted to get a harness but then I read somewhere that that is a terrable Idea cause your head gets crushed in a rollover. So im not shure what to get now.
ohh yeah 03 wrx.

I like how my 04' seats look, but they're really big, I wish they were a tighter fit, I usually slide around in them.... I never sat in an 02-03', how big of a difference is there?
| Mactizen | 03-07-2005 08:16 PM |
STi seats are bad! i didn't buy it for comfort per-say but yikes there not comfortable for more then 1/2 an hour, Torino's commin soon. The day i bought it seats were NOT in the future, but now there ahead of everything.
| MD04WRX | 03-07-2005 08:27 PM |
I like the way the 04 seats look but the bottom 1/2 is too narrow for me, I would like them to be wider with a higher bolster. I would buy aftermarket seats, but don't want to lose my side airbags.

I HATE my STi seats, Im 6'5" 225 and they are toooo small for me. 30 mindrives make my back hurt, I added inner foam for lumbar support which helped A LOT, I highly recommend it, but the bottom is too narrow by far, they are too hard, and have NO shoulder support for me. I fall out around some pretty weak corners, I have to hang on for a sharp corner. Not cool. Anyone know good seats for someone my size? Anyone want to buy STi seats?

I moved from an '02 RS (pretty uncomfortable) to an '04 WRX, and I'm very happy. The fit seems a little more snug and supportive- I'm 5'5" and 115#. Of course Recaros would be nice, but I have no problem with the stock seats and unless I win the lottery, they're staying. :)

Once in awhile, my back will ache in my stock seat. I tend to lean a bit to my right so I can comfortably reach the shifter while steering. The way the side of the seat sticks out, it makes me sit at a weird angle.

As a followup to my first reply, thought I'd share a pic of my leather stockers:

What I do miss from the JDM WRX seats I had for a while is the passenger-side dual seat cushion adjusters. If the buyer hadn't minded, I'd have swapped the base onto my stock seat. And the '98-'02 Forester has the same knobs on the driver's seat, so... if I could find one, I'd have the knobs on both sides.
They help a lot for road trips and such. The seat cushion angle sucks for comfort.
Has anyone here changed out the cushions in stock seats? Thought that might be a cheaper option than aftermarket ones... Maybe swap out the side and thigh bolsters for extended/stiffer versions, and make the seat cushion itself softer. Add some lumbar support.
It wouldn't have the lateral wing/shoulder bolsters, but for the 99% of the time I'm driving off the track anyway.... it wouldn't matter. The problem would be the leather. The way it's stitched, I'm not sure if those individual panels could be removed and replaced.

just throwing in my .02 too ...
i'm 6'2" 160lbs. and i would _really_ like to swap out my stock '05 wrx seats for some nice recaros or sparcos. they really don't support me laterally (end up bracing on the arm rest or my left foot on the floor) and after an hour or so my back begins to hurt. i've tried a _lot_ of different configurations on the seat too.
btw, where could one actually get a chance to see/sit in some of the better seats out there? i really wouldn't feel comfortable ordering them based on the manufacturer's pictures on their websites.. i've looked a bit and haven't found anything in/near cleveland yet.

but got one of those "memory foam" lumbar supports at bed bath and beyond (designed for desk chair I think) and it worked great! back doesn't hurt now, I also found that the back of the seat hurt my tailbone when I sat up against it. I would like to get a nicer drivers seat in someday, but don' t want to lose height adjustability...

Well the problem with nearly all OE seats, and even most aftermarket ones, is that proper ergonomics aren't considered.
Volvo makes the smartest OE seats in my opinions. They've even gone so far as to pair with chiropractic alliances in order to agree upon ergonomically-correct solutions.
IMO, there should be a recess at the rear-center of the seat cushion for the tailbone. Seat height should be dual-adjustable, just like the JDM WRX/STi seats I mentioned (and like the old Forester). Lumbar support should be standard, but adjustable for severity and height. The top cushion for the midback should also follow the proper curvature of the spine.
But then, I'm married to a D.C. so my standards are high. ;)
Spending $500-1000+ on new leather for the JDM WRX seats would've been somewhat silly, when I can get Recaros or Cobras, which are comparatively MUCh better, for a more worthwhile cost.

so i was right?? The 02-03 seats hug a little more than the 04 wrx's?

Yeah, I have.
The '04+ seats *look* more supportive, with the race-like integrated headrest and all, but personally, even though the support is lower around the ribcage, I think the '02-'03 seats wrap around you better. And the thigh supports are FAR better.
Not that they're comparable to the super-stiff foam of an aftermarket sport seat, but......

Definitely like my '02 RS seats alot more than the crappy ones that my old integra had (01 Integra Type R). They are more adjustable, and have better side bolstering. Wouldn't mind some fancy Recaros, but these are pretty good factory seats...

See that's funny, I thought the ITR seats were pretty good. Remarkably better than the RS/LS/GS-R seats were... I had a '94 RS coupe (5-spd.). The ITR ones looked similar, but had better bolstering and I think a softer seat cushion.
I like the Civic Si's seats too, and the shifter.... But the rest of the car sucks. :D

"Recaro" doesn' t mean anything. Recaro makes seats for the Saturn Red Line, but I think they were still crap.
The name doesn't necessarily equate to superiority.
Clarion for example makes (or at least used to) the OE Subaru head units. They also make aftermarket stereos.
Their aftermarket stuff is pretty great, depending on the model. The OE stuff is crap.
