Autometer pillar too short? part 1

MKranz 04-02-2002 01:25 AM

Autometer pillar too short?

My Autometer 3-gauge pillar looks like it's too short by about 2 cm. When I fully seat the bottom end so it looks like it's flush with the dash, the top edge exposes the existing a-pillar. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thx.

lagnwagn 04-02-2002 03:42 AM

yep...My A pillar is too short. Exactly like you said, about 2-3 cm. I chose to square it up at the top, as it is not (as) noticeable at the bottom. :( I see you have a wagon too?! I hope this is not a trend. I guess we'll see if any of the sedan guys have the same problem. I want to make sure its not a wagon thing...It doesn't look bad, but definately not as good as it could be.
WRXagon 04-02-2002 07:15 AM

Has anyone actually measured the sedan vs. wagon a-pillar? I wonder if they're different. I had the same problem with the Lo-Tek a-pillar gauge pod. It was not even close to being long enough for my wagon.

Shawn
PureWRX 04-02-2002 11:29 AM

I have a sedan, and my Autometer A-pillar seemed to fit just fine. After only a little trimming of some small factory plastic left-overs from the molding process, the pillar fit rather nicely. Nothing can be seen of the factory pillar as the Autometer pillar rests over it.
Also, I have the double gauge pod a-pillar, not the triple.

There may be some discrepancies between the sedan and the wagon WRX A-pillars. That would be ineresting to find out, although that would not seem practical from a manufactures stand point (more variation = more money to produce). But, of course, I may be wrong.
Or, there may be a possible flaw or difference in the molding of the dual and triple pillar pods at autometer that may account for the inconsistencies.
lagnwagn 04-02-2002 12:30 PM

yeah, I have a dual pod pillar though..I think there may indeed be a difference in pillar length. Because all of the sedans seem to fit so well, and mine is so-so...
aMiSHBoB 04-02-2002 01:37 PM

I am getting a 2002 WRX within a month and I was planning on getting a gauge pod from www.gaugepods.com I have a 97 Ford ProbeGT and I got one from there for my probe and it looked real good. I was wondering if any of you guys have bought one from them? If so, how did it fit up?

Thanks again for the info..

That's the Lo Tek one. If you do a search you'll find that lots of people had problems with it:(

Well [email protected] It starting to sound like different a-pillars in the sedan vs. wagon is the culprit. I wish I had known that before ordering. Now what? Does Autometer make a generic 3-hole pod that will fit in the middle of any a-pillar? Ya know, without the model-specific top or bottom moldings?

lotek pod

no problem from mine it fit like a glove:lol:
thermite 04-02-2002 06:56 PM

I am getting one shipped this thursday. I guess when I talked to them they had to change some things. Hopefully all will go well. Im also getting mine painted. boostinwrx: did you get a painted one, if so how does it match?

Glen
WRXagon 04-02-2002 06:57 PM

You put a LoTek in a WRX wagon and it fit???

That's weird...makes you wonder if they have some kind of quality control issues going on. I saw one installed in a sedan and although the length looked OK, the top end kind of stuck out from where it should have been. Maybe I'm just picky about this stuff, but if it's made for a WRX it should fit like the OEM part.

Shawn
nqwan 04-02-2002 08:03 PM

well someone in the thread where fastwrx.com is selling the autometers stated that he measured the sedan and wagon pillars and the wagons are 2" longer. i think this is the reason...
samowrx 04-02-2002 08:11 PM

any one have pics of thisinstalled in a wagon to show the difference in length when fluch mounted on the top vs. the bottom?
thermite 04-02-2002 08:19 PM

I have a sedan and will be receiving the pillar next week and fitting it as well. I dont have gauges because I am waiting for the new lunar series from autometer to go along with my white face gauge. I will fit it next week and post some 5 megapixel pics of the way it fits. At 5 megapixels youll be able to see just how well it does fit.

Cheers,

Glen
joefong 04-03-2002 12:54 AM

the lotek pod is great. i had the first one since i gave them my oem pillar to make the mold. the only thing is it fits the sedan but the wagon has a longer a pillar so its not gonna fit the wagon as well.

and the lotek one is color matched where the autometer one is black

Heres a few quick pics of mine, on my wagon. As you can see there is a gap in fitting at the bottom, that is really only noticeable from this angle, also, it sits up a little higher than the dash at the bottom. It is black for now, until I figure out exactly what I want to do, I kinda like the way the black looks though

SHObaru 04-03-2002 01:15 PM

I just got my autometer dual pod and it is most definatly too short for the wagon by about two inches. I wish I had know this before ordering it. Oh well I guess I'll just square it off or perhaps cut the bottom off and seat it then use leftover to cover wires.

Hey Autometer :monkey: Other than that it a great piece though

That's not a bad idea...i don't think it would look too bad if it were cut off carefully, rounded, and painted. Still wish I had known beforehand, tho.

I just got my autometer dual pod and it fits perfect. I also have a sedan.

Brian
bluescoobywagon 04-05-2002 12:58 PM

I installed my Autometer 3 gauge pillar last night. I have the wagon and the pillar was too short. I knew it was too short when I ordered it. I bought mine pre-painted (I was suprised when I opened the box because I didn't request painted) and the color match is excellent. Instead of sawing off the bottom of the pillar, I sawed off the top. I then rounded and smoothed the plastic at the cut to blend it in. I just need to touch up the paint at the cut and the plugs and it's done.

I had ordered the Lo-Tek pillar at first, but they told me that they broke their mold and that it was going to take a few weeks to get. After reading the horror stories on the forum, I cancelled the order, and found the Autometer pillar instead.

One thing I noticed about the Autometer pillar is that the gauges are angled perfectly at the driver, instead of straight back like the Lo-Tek. Overall, I'm glad I bought it, even though I had to cut it. I imagine it would be possible to extend it, but probably not worth the effort.

Can anyone with the autometer A pillar pod post a pic?
I'd like to see what it looks like on a wagon. I realize that its short, but I might still get it. I havent been able to find one made for the wagon.
Thanks
omahasubaru 05-16-2002 11:11 AM

Check your specs.. Well the WRX Wagon is rated with more headroom and in essence is taller than the sedan so this would prove to be an obvious problem for A piller pods.

Jon
KwanDDS 05-16-2002 08:32 PM

Well, I went ahead and ordered an A pillar gauge pod from gaugepods.com Its supposed to fit the wagon.
Hopefully, I'll get it sometime this year. I heard it takes a long time with them. Unfortunately, that was the only place that had an A pillar pod for the wagon.

I'll keep yall informed.
bluescoobywagon 05-18-2002 04:45 PM

Let us know how it fits. If and when it arrives...

For those interested, here's the Autometer pillar sawed off to fit the wagon:

Thats a nice looking setup!
What gauges do you have on there? Specifically the lowest positioned one?
Also if you dont mind saying, what performance mods have you installed?
Thanks
bluescoobywagon 05-18-2002 05:51 PM

Those are Autometer Sport Comp gauges. The top is EGT, the middle is Boost, and the bottom is A/F. It looks like this:

For mods, I have:

DRL disabled
Intake silencer removed
2.5" mandrel bent axle back (Ebay muffler)
PDE uppipe
Homemade boost controller (10psi in 1st, 13.5-14 psi in other gears unless full throttle, then 16 psi in all gears)

I'm trying to keep things low cost, and so far I'm having pretty good luck. I've got a big list of planned mods, and hope to have this car in the 12's pretty soon.

Lo-Tek

Well, as I expected, they let me down. After they charged my account, I asked for a tracking number. They sent me an email saying that they havent produced it yet. ETA 4 weeks.
So I asked for a refund, and they sent me an email for a refund confirmation.

So now I'm back to looking for a pod.

The autometer A pillar pod, how easy was it to cut, and what does the edge look like afterwards?

Oh, and who did you order from?

Thanks
bluescoobywagon 05-23-2002 06:37 PM

I honestly don't remember who I ordered from. It's plastic and I cut it with a hack saw. You can see the edge in the pics above. It was rough at first, and I filed it down to a smooth rounded shape. Once it's painted, it should blend in pretty nicely. Summit Racing gets them in stock on occasion.

if you all check the guagepod.com site today, they are advertising a 2 guage piller pod specifically for the wagon, that wasn't there a few weeks ago when i started looking, so it looks like they may have corrected for size differnce.
KwanDDS 05-23-2002 08:54 PM

Yeah, that ad for a pod for the wagon was there when I ordered it. Unfortunately, as of a couple of days ago, they had'nt even made it yet. They said 4 weeks or so.
Its annoying as hell when vendors try to sell things they dont even have.

Bluescoob, I ordered from FastWRX.com
I think I will do what you did.
Let me know what kind of paint you decide to use.
Thanks

Autometer painted

Well, here are a couple of pics of my autometer painted.
Came out slightly darker than the car's A pillar, but not bad.

I'll post pics of everything installed after I get my car fixed.

using the autometer full pillar do you have to do any kind of drilling to do the wiring? or is there some way you can route them without drilling?
:D
KwanDDS 05-29-2002 08:35 AM

Not sure yet, I'm still waiting for my gauges to arrive.
I bought the electronic gauge, so it might squeeze through without drilling.(no hoses)
But I'm gonna put a 3/16" hole on the factory pillar anyway to hold the autometer pillar in place with their fasteners.
bluescoobywagon 05-29-2002 12:45 PM

I poked holes through the factory pillar to clear one of the gauges and to run the wires. As well as the mentioned holes for the fasteners.

anyone have a particular paint they are using to match the factory a-pillar
ScoobyBoy 05-29-2002 03:05 PM

i thought the full pillar replaces the stock pillar? guess im wrong?
sorry i dont know much about this. but hopefully by the end of summer ill have a set of guages too.
:D
KwanDDS 05-29-2002 04:48 PM

Well, the autometer A pillar pod covers the entire stock A pillar on the sedan. Since the A pillar on the wagon is longer, we have to modify it to fit.

As for the paint...I used this paint called moleculobond, but it came out kinda dark and primer-like in texture. So I coated it that with enamel paint on top. I just got the closest match as I could from Pep Boys.
Diversion 05-30-2002 04:16 AM

I purchased a grey pod from www.gaugepods.com and it fits perfectly and completely covers up the entire stock piece so it looks like it's OEM.. It's really nice.. and way cheaper than the Autometer pods. Just my personal experience with mine, i'll take pics of it today and post later (if I remember, hehe)

Edit: The grey that www.gaugepods.com uses isn't an exact match, but once installed you can HARDLY notice the color difference. The gaugepod is slightly darker in color.

I have a silly dressup & style question.
I have a 2 pod autometer gauge pod, but only one gauge. Should I cover up the top or bottom gauge pod hole?
Just wanted some opinions:D
Lemon007 06-05-2002 11:20 AM

I was wondering about the install of the Autometer A-pillar. When you install the full pillar, do you bolt it into the existing pillar, or do you remove the OEM pillar, and replace it with the Autometer one?

I can see that bluescoobywagon bolted it in because of the nice mod to make up for the size, but was wondering how it is supposed to go on.
bluescoobywagon 06-05-2002 01:21 PM

It comes with some push in fasteners and you actually drill holes through the factory pillar and attatch the cover to it. Then you put put the gauges in (they friction fit in the holes). Then you put the pillar back on the car. I found it was easier to leave some slack in the wires so that I could hook everything up and then angle the pillar into position and stuff the excess wires down into the dash.

Make sure you check the clearance behind the gauges as 2 of mine didn't clear the factory pillar and I had to cut holes. I wouldn't worry too much about mangling the factory pillar as a replacement from Subaru should be pretty cheap if you ever wanted to remove the gauges and pillar pods.

Hey Mike (bluescoob), did you get electronic gauges? If so, where did you tap the wires from?
I was thinking about the clock harness, but wasnt sure if thats to far. I'm not familiar with the layout of the fusebox.

Thanks
Kwan
Lemon007 06-05-2002 08:25 PM

Arugh... darn network....

Thanks bluescoob.

I thought I could keep my OEM pillar all nice and safe with the Autometer A-pillar. Guess I was wrong. Thanks. I might just go to the two pod since there are fitment issues with the waggon anyways. That, and I don't think I'm as skilled working the plastic as you are. :)

I don't think I'd have a problem selling a painted one when it comes back from Lo-Tek. I guess that gives me time to decide.... hmmm.....
bluescoobywagon 06-06-2002 09:09 PM

My gauges are all electric and I tapped the power off the fuse block near the drivers left knee.

I don't have the wiring diagram, but I do have a multimeter. As for where I mounted the probe, it's in the passenger side exhaust manifold, about 6 inches from cylinder 3.

KwanDDS 06-09-2002 06:23 PM

Thanks, I ordered it from FastWRX.com
If you have a sedan, then you wont have to cut it like I did. It comes black, but I spray painted it with enamel paint from PepBoys. Just tried to match the paint can cap color with the WRX interior color. I personally couldn't find a place that sold it prepainted, but since FastWRX sells interior paint, maybe you can ask them if they'll paint it for you.
bluescoobywagon 06-10-2002 04:27 PM

It looks pretty good! I still need to repaint mine. Do you remember exactly which color you used? Did you paint the stock pillar also, or just the autometer cover?

I used "Varsity- Fast Drying ENAMEL" paint.
Color was P-364 Dove Gray

Came out slightly darker, but cant really tell once you put it in the car. I only painted the autometer pod. I also painted the tabs.
