Changing Window Buttons Color! (start)

Decided to give this a try on the 05(will finish this week) :
First , take the whole assembly out of the car:
Ulplug the two plugs by pressing in the tabs and pulling the plugs out:
Next take the switch panel off of the whole assembly VIA the 3 screws:
Next, pop the switches off of the circuit board, i used 4 nails to hold the tabs back but you can use anything (mines lined up backwards for this pic so the tabs dont line up but i circled them):
Next, locate the two leads shown, one is the POS(+) and the other is the NEG(-). with Led's you need to know which one is which because LED's are polar and only run one way. ( They run between 11 and 12.5 Volts) (numbers 2 and 4 by counting pink dots) EDIT FOR SOME REASON THE LED'S ALL GO OFF WHEN YOU PUT THE DRIVERS REAR WINDOW UP. THE LEADS ARE TIED INTO THIS SWITCH SO IM GOING TO FIND THE MAIN LEAD.
You need to solder two wires to these leads, i used one BLACK for NEG(-) and RED for POS(+) to make it easy.
As you can see the switches already have a clear part on the button when you light up the back so the LED's will just have to light up somewhere inside the circuit board housing.
MCD- the higher the brigheter
RED led's are around 2.0V forward diode voltage
5mm led's are around 20 Ma forward diode current
use this: to calculate the resistor you need:resistor calculator
(use #'s on box of led's)

Cool project, blue is my choice.
O yeah, if you find 6 volt LED's you can run two of them in series to a 12 volt connection. I think that should work.
Or if you find 3 volt LEDs run four of them in series.
resistors just take up space and power. :) You can get more light instead by using light emiting diodes.

For a long time I have wondered if I could somehow replace the button controlling the passenger side window, with a 'one touch - down' button, like the one controlling the driver side window. Though, I did not realize that the whole assembly was on a single printed circuit board.
Is the function that continues to supply power to the drivers side window motor part of this circuitry? Also, how does the circuit know when the window is in the down position, is there a limit switch inside the door?
Just wondering, now that you have it apart do you see any way this would be possible?
Thanx in advance...

I taped down the wired; down the sides to the back of the panel where they will connect to all of the LED's:
Here i drilled holes through the black casing only for the LED wires to stick through these wires will stick outside the casing into the door somewhere. NOTE BE CAREFUL NOT TO MESS UP ANY PART OF THE PIVIOT SWITCHES ARE YOU CUT AND/OR DRILL:
Here are 2 LED's sitting inside the switches ( you can see the backs they are pointing the other way toward the clear section on the switch):
This is it for today, ONE OF THE RESISTORS I GOT WAS BAD AND SET ON FIRE WHEN I WAS TESTING THE LED'S SO I GAVE UP FOR THE NIGHT sorry for the bad pics i was mad tired. Ill finish this tomorrow hopefully i just want to find a diff lead amd make sore my cars not gonna go up in flames like it could of.
LED's im using are RED 1.7V 20MA 3000 MCD led's with 1k resistors. the reccomended resistors are 680 ohms at 15V so im playing it a little on the safe side.

Not odd at all subaru and nissan actually share lots of similar parts. A shining example would be the 300zx 4 pots vs subaru jdm 4 pots they are relatively identical.

started off fresh today:
THIS IS WHERE THE NEGATIVE(-) POST SHOULD GO. VOID THE OTHER PIC:

Bend the LED"S like this to get them to point down in the housing.

Now all you have to do is plug the switch in and move around the LED's with something long and skinny to get them to shine in the exact spot. Solder all the wires together and give it a good tape job.
(ill post the pics of inbetween steps over the weekend, i just wanted to get the finished product done!!!!!!!)
here is mine all taped up and tested ready to go in the car:

I'm going to power mine using the cig lighter, and run a wire to the left door.
I took mine apart and was looking and sucks how only the driver window things can glow. Can we find other switches?
Maybe from a Maxima?

FYI
If you look at the board there are empty soldering points for 3 more LED's.
I was going to get the OEM type LED's to solder on the board just like the green ones that are all ready there, but there is no voltage to the existing empty locations.

I've been doing the mod for people for eons but have never gotten around to documenting it. Nice job!
One suggestion, for 120 MCD is plenty bright, people should be warned the LED's for the door/window switch don't dim!
Also, if you leave the stiff wire lead attached to the LED instead of cutting it off and bend them properly, it helps keep the LED's positioned correctly and you don't even need wires. You simply tape down the stiff wire lead to hold the LED in place properly.
I would suggest putting electrical tape down on the switch face where you run the wires and place the LED's to prevent shorts. Also electrical tape is a great way to cover the green LED's and leave them in place in case you want to return to stock in the future.

When you press the window lock button, the leds go off. I used 120mcd red leds from radioshack and they look awesome.

I did mine in Blue. WAY too bright..... I did mine differently, and did all power from the board, and all internal. No external wires or power. A 3 dollar photo sensor keeps them off in daylight.

Yo, how to hook up the 3 dollar photo sensor? Any pics where you mounted the eye?
I wired mine all internally also, and it the lights go off when you press window lock.
I used Red 120mcd LED's, BLUE ones you used are probably 5000mcd. lol :)

The sensor is in the door, using the glass as a kinda " fiber optic " effect.
The blues are 1500mcd/1.5cd 470nm Roithners. Driven 3.5v each @ 20ma. They are actually much darker blue then the pic shows.

Just for a quick follow-up on this, the window switch/door lock cluster from an 02-03 Forester will also work, and has all 4 switches lighted. Also, if you notice every switch in the forester has a light built in, but, the WRX does not have the extra illumination wires ran into the door, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find some of these switches in a wrecking yard. I found the main driver's door cluster and swapped even with a guy that just simply didn't care if they lit up or not... :)

/subscribed for reference. I plan on starting this soon...
eliminating all green in the STI, putting in a gauge pod where the clock is, and going red on everything and replacing the stock head unit...
Looks great btw.

I also have an '06 and am interested in doing this. I might tear down the gauge cluster to see what is needed. I'll take pictures as I go along if and when I have time to do it.
