Cheap Polyurethane For Mudflaps

Hey,
I just found some really cheap polyurethane that is perfectly suited to be crafted into mud flaps while surfing Ebay. The guy only has eleven more sheets, after I bought 4, and they are $7.15 a piece. The dimensions are 1/8X12X12 inches, not ideal, I would like even wider, but still a darn good deal. I just wanted to let ya'll know.

12in is plenty wide. Go for it.

Oh, I went for it.
I just thought some of ya'll might want some cheap flap material too. I'm stoked.

Let us know how it works out.

What do you plan to use to cut it? Would a dremel make a clean looking cut?
| specialev | 12-14-2005 11:16 AM |
I've got a band saw, but aviation snips will work as well for cutting this stuff.

You gonna double those ups? 1/8" is awfully thin. I'm pretty sure my RallyArmor flaps are 1/4"
EDIT: Just thinking about it again. I guess the RallyArmors are pretty thick compared to the standard flaps.. and they don't flap like some. Those 1/8"x12"x12" panels will probably make some nice floppy flaps. :)

I think this stuff should be pretty stiff. It's got a 90 on the Shore A scale, which means it will be rather like a skateboard wheel in hardness. Actually, the stuff that North Ursalia suggests using in the link in post 6 is the same material with the same Durometer rating, and he seems to be happy.
What are Rally Armor flaps made of? Looks like SBR to me.

the 1/4 - 1/2" stuff would be great for rally :D
and that's a very good price.
hmmmmmmmmmm... yeah. i think i'll get me some :D

1/2"? 0.5"?!? Man, that sounds awfully thick for mudflaps. I understand rallying conditions can be harsh, but golly, 1/2" thick flaps.. Wowzers.
I am planning on making mud guards for my car. I call them mud guards as I would like to emulate the OEM splash guards. I plan on using Kydex T, a thermoformable plastic alloy.
"Kydex T is a proprietary acrylic/PVC thermoplastic sheet that is cost competitive with fire retardant ABS/PVC (FR-ABS) formulations but with significantly higher impact strength and extensibility."
I acquired some for a different project, and then got to thinking of auto applications. I have a whole list of things I can make for the car using the Kydex. Unfortunately, I am lacking the time to allocate to such projects. Perhaps in the spring.

1/4" is plenty strong. In the rear, the bumper will break before the mudflap material tears. Don't ask me how I know
FWIW, when backing through the snow, make sure it isn't deep enough to where it will push the flap backwards into the tire. The flap will be promptly yanked from the bumper with a horrible chunch/snap sound.
In my case, the bumper wasn't too badly damaged (the two holes on the inner lip of the bumper where the flap is mounted were torn) and an improvised solution was used to resecure the flap. That is after I made a new aluminium bracket, since it was pretty mangled. The flap itself was undamaged save for a scuff where it contacted the tire.

It took me a while to getting around to installing them, but I am pretty happy with how they turned out. They aren't too floppy, definately more so than the Rally Armor flaps, but they aren't wet noodles either. What I do like about them a lot is that when they hit curbs and what not, they comply, unlike the Rally Armors which are totally rigid. These probably wouldn't be up to serious off roading, but for highway driving and the occasional ski trip, they are perfect.

that's the stuff found on my Rally car and just about every rally car you'll see
just installed some on my rally car:

I drilled one extra hole for a rivet nut in the back on each side, the rest of the fasteners go in stock holes. On the lip of the fenders I ditched the plastic pins for captive nut plates with SS fasteners and nice big SS washers.

Front:

Rear (There is one bolt holding this one on that you can't see):

Here's a pic of the rivet nuts I used. These are pretty sweet; you insert your bolt, tighten, and the part compresses and you have an instant nut. I put these in any of the holes I drilled, and in inboard holes on the front. The bolt that goes through these in the front also holds on the rocker cover now.

I really dig these rivet nut things. I swapped out all those junky plastic things on the front splash guard with these as well. No more struggle, broken clips.
Next time I have the road wheels of I will take some better pics of my fastening solution.

^^^ I used a similar concept to secure my mudflaps because they came without hardware (from a friend).
Except my "rivet nuts" were really masonry screws with the plastic caps that inserted in the bumper to hold it on.
Just like these

That is nothing like what you get from Rally Armor. Far from ghetto. :)
Those are not masonary screws in the pic above. They are cheap plastic #4 or #8 anchors. Good to use in block or brick walls as well as gyp. They are not designed for automotive use. They have a decent amount of tension but not much in the shear dept. They will get yanked out of the rear bumper the first time you back into a curb or pull out if twisted/bent too far. The screws unless stainless steel will rust fairly quickly as the 'zinc' coating is weak.
As for the flaps being too brittle. Far from it. I've had mine on for a bunch of snowcross driving and some offroading as well. Not to mention a few blizzards (driving from Philly to NY) They are a little scratched up, but almost impossible to see the scrathces from a distance. If a product can take the daily abuse of NYC, I consider it a good product, worthy of my money. :)
As most of us do not drive our cars in Rallies daily nor want to mount the flaps as a real rally car does. The Rally Armor units are a good compromise.
We use what we sell and feel the Rally Armor units are worth the money compared to the overpriced units out there...
We can appreicate folks who want to make their own parts. I have in the past. The Rivenut idea is great. I would change the bolt to something a little more flat on the side of the head. You may want to check to see if the offer 'tamper proof' bolts as they usually are thinner and more flat then the bolt in the picture.
Bryan

I rivet mine to the car with a riveter (hand or air will do)
but you can simply drill and use a bolt/washer/nut combination.
if you need photos, I can get some for you off of the race car, just let me know :)

I had to get another WRX and one season in the snow and sand on the pass has proven that I need another set of flaps. My rocker panels and rear quarter panels are severly mangled after 2 months of driving in the mountains.
Last time around I got the material for all four corners for $27. It seems the price of polyurethane has gone up as I went to the guy I bought it from last time and his price has more than doubled. This time I bought my flap material from www.rallylights.com. They sell 12x12 inch sheets of the stuff for ~50$.
I've got the front done for now. I didn't use the rivnuts I used last time. This time around I used clip on nutplates that you can get at the autbody supply store on the tab and lip of the fender at the aft section of the front wheel arch.

I made my own out of a Neoprene material, after some research. It's not a hard plastic like Rally Armors, but more a rubberish material. Does its job, will never break or snap, maintains shape during driving and doesnt have "memory" bending characteristics. Best of all, it was $38 for more than enough material to make all 4 flaps :D Has withstanded all elements well, hot rubber on the ground from autoX, me trying to be a rally driver in the snow and a crash haha.
Actually these urethane sheets are perfect for real off roading
that's the stuff found on my Rally car and just about every rally car you'll see
just installed some on my rally car:

it's the rally armor stuff that would shred to bits in real offroading ;)
too brittle, it would literally rip apart....

Have you ever tested a set of Rally Armor? They really that weak huh?

I watched a set of the "Classic" style RA's get entirely destroyed in 9 runs at a recent Rallycross. The guy didn't even do anything evil to them, just hit them with mud.
I personally have a set on my car made of the the same stuff as the RA "Economy" mudflaps. About 6 months on the car and they're permanently curled backwards from the wind and snow/rain/mud hitting them.
My next step is urethane from rallylights.com. I'd be all over the stuff in the OP but 12x12 is too small. The flaps I make are 12x17.

Urethane flaps from Rally Armor are really good for any on and off road conditions!
Our team have used them for both the recce and the rally car (open class) and we were amazed how much abuse they can take!

Wow a classic case of He said she said, maybe Jamie is just more hard core then the rest or she had a bad set of RA Flap but either way I think it great what RA does and all that Jamie does for the forums. I will be getting a set for my 08 in time, maybe I will just get aset for the 09 Forester if I decied the "chip issue" fix isn't good enough for SOA.

I absolutely love my RallyArmor mud guards. I didn't get the UR one's, but the previous generation. I've got cold winters here, driving over snowbanks, you name it, they haven't cracked, or deformed in any way! One of the best useful mods I've done on my car.
Best of all, they act as rim protectors when parking on these streets! They even touch the ground when taking some of my favorite corners hard =)

Another option is getting some truck ones over at an auto parts store and trimming them to fit. Saw them for 10$ a piece I think? But they were pretty flappy.. these RA's are stiff =) Just how she likes 'em

First off, that ghetto hardware posted before isnt for RA flaps. They are used with Fastline mudflaps and a couple of other brands. I know because i used them.
Second, don't know about shredding classic mudflaps in rallycross but i had a set of Rally Armor classic flaps for at least 4 or 5 events and they never showed any real damage. I even turned around and sold them to another member once i upgraded to the UR Limiteds (urethane).
I got the UR limited and have been super happy with them. They look fantastic, and as someone else posted are nice in that they give a bit. I dont ever hear them scraping over speedbumps or anything like that.

They hold up awesome too. I did an entire championship season of CRS rallycross on the same set of flaps and they haven't shown any signs of shredding, etc.

I am so confident in Rally Armor's UR line of mudflaps that i'll be running them on my stage rally car in '09.

I was able to put Rally Armor's mudflaps to the test this past weekend at the Homestead Rally in Homestead, FL. The pictures should speak for themselves, and for the quality of Rally Armor mudflaps.
I have rallied at Homestead in the past, and I firmly believe that it is one of the most brutal rallies I have ever done, simply because of the terrain:

Gravel is absolute MURDER for rally cars. You can see here how I taped up the sides of the car, hoping that the rocks thrown up by the tires wouldn't damage the bodywork of the car. And although it isn't as easy to tell in the picture, I entered the rally with a brand-new set of tires...

... and after the rally, that brand-new set of tires was completely destroyed:

Now... let's look at what the mudflaps also looked like after the rally:

Besides being dirty, there is no indication that they're even used.
The reason I am sponsored by Rally Armor is because I believe in their products, and I believe this is a good demonstration of their quality.

cool thread. Maybe some dremal trimming might make the home made bit look better.

RA making a urethane flap was the right choice for them;their plastic flaps were not tough enough. I am sure their polyurethane flaps are far superior to the original models as it is a better choice of material for this application.
I just finished the rear flaps and now have a complete set of polyurethane flaps for less than $60, which is still kind of expensive considering that when I started this thread I was getting the sheets for $7 each.

I omitted one fastener from the way I set these up on my bugeye. I didn't feel like drilling any holes this time around and thought three fasteners would suffice.

What is the difference between polyurethane and LDPE?
I was told that LDPE is what is being used on actuall rally cars. (Low Density Poly Etheline)

i have the classics on my car and competed in all of last season SCCA Rallycrosses and so far 3 events this year. they only signs of wear on them are the bottoms being scuffed up a lil' from speedbumps near my home.
i did a fair amount of homework before making the purchase and read lots of good reviews regarding their durabililty. the only negative feedback i found was regarding cold weather and living in New England, this concerned me. but to no avail and 4 winter events run on them (not including the daily driving) and they have not cracked or shown signs of brittleness yet. they do not bend or "flap" at high speeds like i've seen in other manufacturers' flaps and have only very slight bending only due to mud-caking between the flap and the tire itself cuz' of my not cleanin' them out between runs at events. these flaps are definitely worth the money and i will go with RA when i need to replace.

hey Jamie....
1/2" for underbody? are you crazy? LOL
seriously....I used large (2'x4') sheets of 1/4" thick UHMW-PE and man, that stuff is tough....nothing's getting through that. I'm more worried about it getting pulled out of the mounting points before something punches a hole in it.
1/2" has GOT to be overkill, no?

Like Blix, I also have the classic Rally Armor flaps. 2 years of cold, hot, and everything in between.
They have survived 20+ rallycrosses, along with miles and miles of gravel roads.
They only look used on the tire-side of the flap, and even then, the only sign of wear is where my too-large-of-snow-tires have rubbed while rallycrossing/snow driving.
They have hit the ground, been through curbs, everything daily driving consists of, as well as rallycross, and they are still holding up great.

If I remember right, the flaps weren't the weakest link... If they were the ones on the '08 at NTR.

Rally Armor Mudflaps are a great high quality product. Many of the people that I Rally Cross, and off-road with have abused the hell out of their cars and the flaps hold up very well. They also work very well. Even with my lifted "Monster" of a GC they do a great job at deflecting all the crap that would normally tear up the side of my car!!
| DrewSTi | 02-29-2008 08:35 PM |
I've had my RallyArmor Classics for a more than a year now on a lowered car and they're still holding up great. I've done a few rally-xs with them, lots of auto-x and of course sub freezing New England weather. No cracking at all. I really don't like the look of the Urethane ones. I think the classics are much better looking. DI crew reppin RallyArmor lol.
| Tomasu | 03-01-2008 03:41 PM |
I've had my RallyArmor classics since December 2006, and put them through Rallyx, gravel roads, snow, and even scraped/smashed them to all hell taking my car on a jeep trail - bending them under the car every which way. I've scraped them on curbs, lodged them behind curbs and slapped them all over the place. They just take the abuse with out any signs of fatigue and the hardware hasn't even needed tightening. I love my RA mudflaps, and I'd love to buy another set, but these ones are still perfectly fine so I don't really need to.
Hats off to a company that loves motor sport and works to help us do what we love.

Love my RA mudflaps. Had them through 2 Maine winters, ice, snow, -20 degrees bent up in the snow, nothing! Dirt, mud, gravel, they will handle what ever you throw at them. I don't know how they could destroy them by using them for what they are intended. I'm sure if you want to purposely wreck them you could, but I doubt from regular use on the the road or even rally without extenuating circumstances.
| CGM6 | 03-02-2008 06:23 PM |
RA regulars for me, love them alot....
gravel has taken it's toll on them a bit, just cosmetic on the inside of the flap though...love the protection!

Does anyone have a template with measurements on how to make the mud flaps? for a 02 wrx.
| specialev | 11-20-2010 12:41 AM |
16x16" worked for me without any template. I'd dog ear the corners 45 degrees by about 1" to make them look pretty. You could also give them a radius, though your results might vary.
