DC National Tour...
So, anyone have news? How was the weather? What's up with Jesse in the '87 Civic Si taking the win? Doesn't he know he only has 92 hp? Tom, give us an update...

Mike

...and look at the run Courtney put down today, to take 2nd. Can't wait to get the full story from Tom.

I got woodshedded ;)

It was a momentum maintenance course, and I had my head up my ass all weekend. I had 3 different people come up to me including corey and strano and say "you were driving and I was thinking, is that really hoppe??, he looks choppy as HELL out there"

Having said that, courtney and jesse drove awesome, they drove the lines and drove the course like it should have been driven rather then cone to cone....

I was about 1.5 secs off the pace of the local people in ES and CS that I usually compare myself too, so I don't feel that bad :)

-Tom
stxwrxracer 05-31-2004 09:47 AM

So, how prepared was Jesse's Civic? LSD? Pretty interesting...but don't feel bad, Tom...we all have those weekends;)

-Mike
trhoppe 05-31-2004 10:07 AM

Nope, it was Ryan Thompsons civic from STS. Jesse would have been 2nd behind Andy Hollis if he drove it in S...

I know how you feel mike :)

Let me congratulate Miranda (Midnight_Gold) on bringing home a Subaru victory in STUL. And thanks to Tom for bringing me a chair to let me chat up your fiancee. :) On a weekend where nothing really went well for me, at least I enjoyed my worker assignment.

Like Tom, I didn't really get that the course was a momentum maintenance course, and I was driving it "cone to cone" on my first two runs on Saturday. Unfortunately, I spun on both my first and third runs -- first time on A3S04s, and I think they do have a ton of grip but they also seem to break loose with a lot less warning than the S03s. After I went off course less than ten seconds into my third run, I drove the rest of the course at about 11/10ths, and was amazed at how much grip the A3S04s have, if you can walk that fine line between sticking and sliding. On the third run, I was doing the slaloms probably 5 MPH faster than I was on the first two runs -- and it was working.

Sunday I woke up with a bad cold, feeling like I'd been run over by a truck. I would have loved to get more seat time with the S04s, but I would have been pretty useless at the event, so I stayed home. :(

Well, next weekend is the DC Pro -- hopefully I'll do a little better on these new tires with some more seat time.

Coincidence? I think NOT!

If you're enganged like this says, congrats! :)

I was looking at the results and there were less than a handful of people that run with us (NER) that actually made the journey... like 5.

See y'all at nationals. :)
Watkinsm3 05-31-2004 11:29 AM

Yeah, speaking of botched driving... That pretty much describes my saturday runs. I guess I just wanted to keep up my record of driving like crap on at least one day of national event. Cones on my first two runs on saturday left me in the horrible position of needing a clean run for sunday. I thought the last one was quick as I cleaned up my line going out... I guess the aggression wasn't there as the time was poo. Left me a monstrous 4 seconds back going into sunday.

I cleaned up a little on sunday (no cones!) and was fast enough to post the 2nd fastest clean A-Stock run of the day but was still a little off the pace. Still made a bunch of errors... as I know the car could have been in the 56s if gotten my act together. There's always next week.

I finally made it to a National event and I managed to drive like total crap. Granted I think tha this is due to having run in Heat 6 and having been at the site for over 12 hours before my first run. The metal preparation aspect of the day totally blew it for me. Both days I managed to cone my first run and it's a good thing I got a rerun on Sunday cause that helped me out some too. The whole 3 run thing is totally new to me and I'm going to have to work on that at local events more than anything.

I still managed to go home with a better finish than I was planning on. The speed of the course and the long drawn out day made for an intersting experience. It also put a whole new perspective on autocross for me too.

I think Tom's getting a little excited about moving to Atlanta and getting ready for house hunting! :D He had one of those "too little sleep, too much beer" moments and asked me. It was actually kind of cute.. ;)

Don't worry too much boys.. you haven't lost Tom yet... there's no ring on my finger, and I don't even know if he remembers asking me now!:lol::lol:

Anyways...... thanks so much for all the encouragement guys! I don't think I would have had half as much fun had jbrennen, trhoppe, and autowrxer not come give me pointers and spend time chatting with me! I owe you guys big, especially for putting up with me being so sick and coughy!

I'm sorry that you didn't manage to run the second day, j, but I hope we'll see you again soon!

rockt104 05-31-2004 06:08 PM

DC was my first national event and it was an eye opening experience to say the least...there are a lot of good drivers out there. I learned a lot just watching the STX (and STS) drivers. I honestly did a lot better than I thought I would with my limited experience...but left some time out there sunday for sure, since I coned away my fastest run. Either way it didnt matter, because my third run was good enough to move into 4th and Tom was way ahead of me in 3rd.

Biggest thing that surprised me is, even though any seat time is good, local events just dont prepare you for the speed and size of a national course. Not even close.

Hey, guys, I may not have been driving a Subie this weekend, but my car ran (granted, Pat was driving it), and I ran (in CS, with Steve Telehowski warming my tires!). :) I drove like crap on Sunday -- Jack already covered half of it, but the other half was finding out that a friend of mine, Ron Katona (BMW M3 driver in BSP/SM), had succumbed to lung cancer Saturday night. Needless to say, autocross seemed like a very small thing at that moment.

The Civic was an '89 and prepped pretty well for STS. It was the first time I'd ever driven an 89-91 Civic, and it was a hoot.

with a diff, it'd get faster IMO. I don't know if it'll touch Tom on a good day though...

Thanks to Ryan for letting me drive it on short notice. Civics and Street tires are fun....I had almost forgotten.

Also, of note....

if Ryan Thompson, Andy Hollis, and myself were all clean both days...It would have gone:

Ryan: 124.659
Me: 125.813
Andy: 126.069

Ryan is scary fast...

Keep in mind that an STS Civic is easily faster in a straight than my MR2.

112whp in 2080 lb car for the Civic
114whp in a 2560 lb car for my MR2

Well, I hate to sound like a broken record... as many people have said this before in this thread...

I DROVE LIKE CRAP!

End of story. Still came home with wood, but that was by far my worst National event yet. I thought I learned something watching STX run and talking with Tom before I ran... then I sucked it up. The car was scary loose in the transitions and I had no confidence.

That said, the top speed on the course wasn't as high as everyone at the event was saying... I usually shift to 3rd at least once. I didn't have to shift all weekend. The course just didn't slow you down for any tight stuff, it allowed you to go fast everywhere.

Oh yea... and before the event, the press release reads as follows...
The Tire Rack SCCA National Tour on Tap for D.C. This Weekend
Curtis Kitchen
Ian Stewart (shown here in a B Stock BMW at Houstons Solo Tour stop) will be on hand with other top drivers at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C., this weekend.
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 27, 2004) The nations capital hosts The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tours Memorial Day weekend stop at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C. beginning Saturday.

Its the first action in almost a month for many soloists, and that, along with plentiful sunshine and warm temperatures forecast for the area, has pushed the entry list to nearly 370 entries.

Street Touring leads the classes with 26 entries, and both the Street Modified and G Stock ranks have 24 competitors ready to go. Overall, 89 names are entered in Street class competition, which is almost one-fourth of the field overall.

One name to watch for in STS this weekend is Corey Ridgick, of Allentown, Pa. Earlier this season, Ridgick, in his silver RedShift Motorsports 2000 Subaru Impreza RS, won the first Honda Street Challenge (the top finishing Street class competitor) during the Hawk Performance Super Challenge in Atlanta, Ga., in February.

Street Modified 2 competitors Ian Stewart, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Robert Palmblad, of Orlando, Fla., are set to see whos faster in Stewarts Maitland Importers Inc. 1999 Mazda Miata. The pair finished one-two, respectively, in the class at The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries event in Atlanta.

It is a Chevrolet Corvette-laden Super Stock field that goes into the weekend. Led by the familiar yellow Jungle Cat Racing/Soul Speed 2004 Corvette driven by Erik Strelnieks, of Austin, Texas, others such as Jerry Onks, of Smyrna, Tenn., in his Ecklers/VetteSport/RAFT 2002 Corvette, will also put on a show as their mechanical monsters devour the pyloned course.

The event begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. when the first of five heats hits the course, and will wrap up with the completion of the last heat Sunday afternoon.

Plus you were on Kumhos rather then SO4s, and stock shocks!

The STi is there in AS, just needs time. The Kozlaks are the best drivers out there IMHO and they have that C4 working with big Hoosiers and double Konis on it already.

Is that 993 AWD or a RWD??

Last but not least, this was not a Subaru course by any stretch of the imagination....

An excellent point about tires and the struts. Hopefully by the end of june I should have the struts ordered if not on the car. I may do one more set of kumhos to dial in the struts but I'll definitely be on hoosiers in Topeka.

I ran against the Kozlaks locally about a month ago (before I even had the car aligned and the front bar wasn't on) and they were dialing in the shocks on the 993 (rwd for yer information). Granted, local events don't say much compared to national events but I did have them by a few tenths by the end of the day. I know the car can do it... its just a matter of me not driving like a chump at national events.

The downside is the car is tearing through tires... Its only June and I'm already flipping my second set of kumhos. I need to win some tires this weekend!!!!

Hmm... I know they won't fit on my car, but how much do you want for them? I doubt Tom would say no to an extra set of wheels, and I sure would like to see what a 225/45/17 looks like on an 8" wheel... might even make for some fun test driving in teh mountains one weekend.

hahaha... maybe! Even after the alignment and the front bar I'm still ridiing mostly on the outside edge of the tire. I may have 255 tires but I'm only using about 55 of it through the turns out on course.

That's 'cause your alignment doesn't include "-2.5 degrees camber" like your Subaru wants before it will stop being all biblical and returning your outside shoulder to dust!

Ain't that the truth... If there is one thing that makes me want to get out of A-Stock its the lack of camber on the car. Just sitting here now thinking about it is making me angry.
