Solberg starts Citroen fightback
Subaru's Petter Solberg and team boss David Lapworth are confident they can take the title-fight back to Citroen and reigning champion Sebastien Loeb on next weekend's Rally Argentina. The 2003 title winner and his Japanese team have been left behind after a string of five wins in a row for Loeb over the past two months.

Considering I took a long sabbatical from WRC, I've been enjoying the season. However, it's now starting to get old. Loeb is just blowing everyone away, and that's only entertaining for so long.
Would like to see someone, anyone else win. Hell, even Duval. That would shake things up. Maybe.

Winning by sabotage wouldn't really be satisfying, would it?
Sure, Loeb may not be our guy, but we're witnessing history here. He is on his way to being the best rally driver of all time. And we're seeing it happen. I think that's pretty exciting.
Twenty years from now when they show the 2005 WRC on "Legends of Motorsport" on Speed Hologram, hosted by Dave Hobbs' head in a jar, we'll be able to lean over and tell our grandkids how we remember watching Loeb's winning streak when it happened. And the grandkids will just shrug their shoulders and say, "whatever," and go back to playing their Playstation22 Mindheld game.
But I think each of the drivers/ co-drivers have their own merits and I kinda root for all of them, not just the ones in blue&yellow. Besides, who knows who will be driving for which teams in a year or two, or three.

Meanwhile the rallies are boring as heck. When there's realistically only three people capable of winning a rally(barring mechanical failures), and two of them have dropped out or wrecked after the first day, the rest of the rally is boring. I'd like to go back to the days of a few years ago when we had 5 or 6 different winners a year.
The Pugs are terrible this year. Duval is too young and still makes rookie mistakes. Atkinson is still a rookie so count him out. Skoda is a non-contender. Mitsubishi COULD be capable of A win, same with Ford. So again, the only three competitors capable of competing in any given rally on a consistent basis are Solberg, Loeb and a revolving wildcard, be it Gardemeister or Gronholm or someone else.

Atkinson is a waste of money, time and effort. There was plenty of driver churn this year, they could have picked up someone with experience who could actually earn points. I'm sure Atkinson can be fast, but he doesn't have the experience to put it all together for a pace setting, reliable ride... :(

Yeah..but they can't get someone who's too good.. remember *cough* Petterego *cough*.
As far as Loeb is concerned, I firmly believe he's dominating because of the tyre-company-not-to-be-named. Ever since he's been using them he's just walked on everyone else. I'm guessing they're a perfect match to the Citro's suspension/Loeb driving style.

Subaru is fond of young, undiscovered drivers, no doubt. That's how Petter got his start and SWRT hit a gold mine with him. Atkinson is too much of a rookie IMO, how many rallies has he actually finished? Prodrive would have been better served keeping Hirvonen IMO.

Ehh, Petter could be neck and neck with him right now if he hadn't made so many non-tire related mistakes. Loeb is winning the championship because he's consistent, if he's not winning then he's in the top three. Unfortunately Petter on the other hand, is either winning or he's generally at the bottom of the leaderboard. I also think that Loeb's success is not necessarily that he's so good, just that everyone else is doing so poorly. And that's not to take anything away from Loeb, but this hasn't been one of the more competitive times for the WRC.

Granted Subaru has had their share of driver/ mechanical problems but nobody (even Granholm) can come close to Loeb once he builds a slight time cushion. He's been doing this ever since he got the new compound M's. Remember, at least 1/3 of the package is tyres

I also enjoy seeing underdogs and wildcards too. I wouldn't mind seeing Gartermiester win one.
What I'd really like to see is Loeb drive for Skoda next year and clean house with a Fabia. :D

with a time difference of over 30 seconds in the first leg you could arguably say that WRC isn't competitive. 30 seconds is a long damn time! You'll also notice that after the first 3 guys the closest time is over 2minutes, so arguably you can still notice the better drivers in the group.
However I'm glad to see that someone besides subaru is winning for once. Don't get my wrong, I'm planning to use a scooby when I start rallying, no thanks to certain co-drives in Atlanta in a certain red subabu last year. (thanks jiggy! :disco: ) but it makes subaru rethink their strategy, setup etc.... which in the long run benefits the consumers of the car for what pieces they pull into production.

According to Lapworth, he told me this over cocktails in Mexico and I saw or read (don't remember) this in an interview as well
Subaru traditionally has developed a second driver, you know that. Though there has been a few exceptions.
Solberg's popularity probably does more for marketing the brand than the manufacturers championship, so it is probably smart to work on developing a second driver to be there when Solberg's career starts to wind down.
I think Atkinson is a pretty good choice because he is personable and English is his first language (probably more important than you think). He will become a better driver with time-practice makes perfect. There was a time when Solberg was crashing and doing poorly all the time as well
According to Lapworth, he told me this over cocktails in Mexico and I saw or read (don't remember) this in an interview as well

I've got $20 that says Solberg won't be around next year driving a Subaru.

I believe Solberg is already under contract with Subaru for next year.

Solberg is still doing incredible. If he hadn't been told to slow down for those water holes and hadn't lost his brakes he would have been right there with Loeb and probably beaten Grunholm. Loeb may be marginally better but I find it absolutely incredible that his car hasn't broken anything in 5 months or so. I was losing confidence in Petter for awhile but he really impressed me in Argentina.

Ok, I agree with that. I goes in line with Subaru's interest in drumming up support and following for national rallying and WRC in the US for example as stated from a interview with the STi president at about the time of '02 WRX release in the US.

Loeb is a great driver backed by a great team. He finishes the stages and appears calm when he gives his message to the reporter. None of the other drivers can make it look as easy.. not even Solberg. Any slander directed toward Loeb or the Citroen team is rooted in fanboism. That swerve to avoid the cow earned him a gold star in my book... meanwhile Petter is flying through ditches and dinging up the suspension. Petter's an awesome driver.. just not as good as Loeb.

So there's no real way for Solberg to win the championship - Him winning depends on Loeb crashing/DNF'ing a lot, which won't happen more than once.
At this point, I'm hoping for Gardemeister to take second place, and Solberg third. I wouldn't mind seeing Ford take a lot of Manufacturers points as well.

At Loeb, yes. He is performing so well, it's hard to argue. The thing that annoys me most aout him is that he's beating Solberg consistently. :p
At Citroen/Peugot, partially - they came in, blew thier money to get the championship, and are pulling out. That's great for thier marketing/ego and such, but it leaves Rally with a gaping hole in manufacturers/driver rides.

I'm not sure when this actually happens to rally drivers. They seem to be able to keep going till they get bored and want to do something else like Carlos did.
The top guys now have proven records and can probably keep going as long as they like. With fewer rides for the next few years, it is the up and coming guys like Atkinson and Duval that may never get a chance to develop. There just isn't going to be space for them unless teams start fielding more cars.
