Four (4) Hella Supertones... blown eardrums?

Lately I've been feeling the need to announce myself coming around a blind corner/turn or cresting a hill.. with good reason (really, I promise). I'm set on getting Supertones, and I've read how loud they are, however..
If I install two sets (4 horns, total), am I willing myself and others to be deaf or nearly so?
I honestly want them to be *****-your-pants surprising. Again, I'm not doing it to wreak havoc on anyone, I honestly believe it might be necessary around here..
Thanks in advance!

Nah, from inside the car you won't notice much of an increase in volume since the horns are highly directional (this is assuming you install the horns facing forwards ;) ). Just don't honk the horns in the garage while the car door or car windows are open and you should be fine.
Unabomber has 4 on his car. :D

Fantastic. Great. Maybe 6 would do. J/K. I'll be going with 4. Drivers in this state need to wake up and stop running into people... especially vengeful people..

Oh.. and standing in the road on a blind corner... that too.

According to my dB meter, they put out 128dB. I have the SuperTones wired into my stock horns too, so that's all 6 horns going off. All 7 if the alarm goes off.
They dont sound too loud inside the car, but you will scare the bejesus out of other drivers. They have really, really, really saved me from a couple of close calls though. They have also made (so far) two people fall down and one lady heave her coffee into her dashboard.

I've known the current owner Dave literally all my life, and he is a great guy. Both the original owner (whom I have also have known most my life) and Dave (the current) have been around rallying a loooooooong time.
The original owner was a regular rally competitor when he wasn't busy doing God knows what for the governmnet ;) ;) Dave has been a Stage Captain at STPR and Maine for at least a decade, and he also races an oooooold Honda with his son Will, who himself is an active rally navigator.
So buy from him, his prices are good, his service is great, and he gives back to the community :D

Well, today i got to use my "measly" 2 supertones + 1 stock horn while driving home from work (weekend overtime...) on someone who decided that they were going to change lanes nice and fast and jump in front of me into a space that their car would just bearly fit into... (traffic was moving at a "brisk" 35 mph on the freeway and i knew what they were going to do so my hand was ready to press the horn) Needless to say, they had an earful for 3-4 seconds and exhibited no more signs of aggressive driving after that for the next 10 miles that i could see them...

For those of who who have Hellas that have replied (or not), do you prefer the tone of the consonant (118 db)to the dissonant (113 db), or vice versa?
| komm.zu.mir | 04-10-2005 11:31 PM |
I also had a fairly good reason to use them tonight (but I don't have them yet!).
Evidently the driver tailgating the heck out of me (by a foot or less) decided that because he couldn't pass me (in the right hand lane) or the person to my left (too slow in the fast lane!), he'd use the shoulder to vent and escape with instead. I prayed and prayed for a blowout. It didn't happen. But the S-tones probably would have ran him into a ditch... or at least freaked the **** out of him.

I haven't heard both. I have the 113 dB set because i'm a cheap b@$$tard like that. They sound almost exactly like the stock horns, except 5-6 times louder...

The car in question was an Olds with a universal wing, light-up Jolly Roger mudflaps (that wire to the brakelights), etc... I couldn't snap a picture, it was way too dark, plus my hands were busy! It was a sight to behold..
Maybe he was feeling threatened by the 4 cyl. 2.5L fury.. :D (I kid)

| coldfire22x | 04-11-2005 12:59 AM |
i'm sorry if i've been missing the point all along .. but these hella supertones.. is the whole point just to make someone that you perceive as an aggressive driver go deaf?
i mean, i don't want to step on anybody's toes who like the supertones, but i see a lot of people getting flamed for wanting a different wing on their wrx or some different tail lights, but it seems widely accepted to have a car that's as loud as a 747 taking off ;p

It only has to sound loud if somebody's trying to merge into your cars fender without looking over their shoulders or checking their mirrors first. That or they're doing something stupid/boneheaded in the first place. If a law enforcement officer can justify pulling someone over for driving aggressively and diving through traffic (i've it happen to enough people around me when driving home from work) i should at least be able to honk my horn at them if it could have potentially endangered my well being. :)
| Handsdown | 04-11-2005 02:01 AM |
you can honk your stock horns at them and they'll get the picture.
the hella horns just frighten them. if you use them to do that, you might end up regretting it.

I already have 2 airhorns instaled. I think I'm going to have to get 2 supertones to go with that. You have no idea how quiet my horns sound in the city. Taxi's are ruthless in ny.

Have you heard our horns on a highway? Roadnoise coupled with a nice stereo will prevent anyone from hearing it.
If you can't hear the supertones going off on a highway, you must be legally deaf and probably shouldn't be driving in the first place.
They are more geared towards highway driving than backroads/around town things. I'm getting ready to install mine as the highways around DC are horrible. People don't look, change 2-3 lanes sometimes, drive 45 in the fast lane, you name it, the morons around here have probably done it.

I agree. In this area my reason for concern and remedy with Supertones is that drivers around here do some genuinely stupid things when driving, or even do them from a stop/roll. It's not to aggravate an aggressive or idiot driver, really, but to prevent things, as I originally posted.
I can't tell you how many times people have nearly backed straight into me in town in a parking lot, or pulled out onto a road without looking. These people judge a good percentage of roads to be too narrow, and end up straddling the lines, smack into me coming up or down a hill, blind turn, etc...
Two of the worst ones I've had have been;
1. Philadelphia; A couple of kids are looking to pull out of their parallel park. It's rush hour. We're driving and are halfway past them, when they jerk out of their space, backwards, and would have gone right into the left rear of the RS unless Lonnie hadn't somehow found the space and swerved a bit to the right..
2. An old tanky Mercedes is at the exit of a shopping center, looking to cross two lanes of oncoming traffic, to the right-hand, northbound lanes. This road is 60 mph, and we're coming from a merge onto it. The 'cedes whizzes out across the left lanes, through the middle and continues, right into our path. They misjudged our speed? We wouldn't have been able to stop, ourselves, and used the shoulder. No speeding on our part involved here.
Not that the S-tones would have helped in either situation, but again, people around here (and sometimes I think the entire east coast) do some really stupid things..
Recently, they would have been a great help.
University students, or anyone for that matter, shouldn't stand or cross on a blind turn. Especially if there's a set of traffic lights to guide you. Three people were just hit this way by a friend in a WRX. I would have been blasting Supertones around that corner. It was a Friday night, laden with parties, the driver wasn't under the influence, but who knows who else was..
In any case, after sitting on it, it's a bit of negligence and ignorance on both ends, but still.... What a friggin' stupid thing to do.
Eh. I'm done my rant. Still, any sound clips of Hella S-tones? I'll take any!!

When the deer freeze in the headlights on the road, the supertones, sure get them running again!!

Ive only got 2 and 1 factory horn. They are plenty lound enough. Besides looking sweet, they are DAM LOUD! I acutally think for a split secondbefore using them.
On a side note, I was pulling out of my driveway this morning around 6am, and accidentally honked my horn. Probably gonna have to go appologize to my neighbors about that one when I get home ;).

The 113DB ones sound better. The 118db one is more annoying like the one in the video. I have the 118 db one. Oh yeah, make sure it doesn't accidentally go off in a parking garage, facing a wall, or in your garage = loss of hearing.

i'm sorry, but unless it's a freeway, there's no excuse for that. regardless of whether or not the turn is blind, there is NO excuse for hitting people, and while it was a really stupid thing for them to be standing in the road, you shouldn't ever be that out of control that you can't avoid a stationary object.
let alone three stationary objects that happen to be people.
if you want horns that grab attention fine, but if you want horns that disrupt a motorist's ability to drive safely, i hope you die in a car wreck caused by your callousness.
the thing about sound is that it's only directional to a point. you're not always going to be able to select the one driver that needs to be alerted without disrupting other drivers around you.
as for putting 4 or 8 of them on your car/truck- die in a fire. you don't need 8 supertones to alert someone, and as funny/righteous/badass as you think it may be to scare the hell out of someone who isn't driving properly, it isn't. it's irresponsible and unethical. alerting is one thing, aural assault is something completely different.
if someone with airhorns/trainhorns/4 hella supertones blasts at me for any longer than is enough to get my attention, you can bet your ass i'll be right there with my 2 factory horns of annoyance in the lane next to you, standing on the wheel for as long as i can keep up with you. that or i'll take the high road and just call highway patrol and give them your plates and alert them that you have aftermarket horns that exceed decible levels appropriate for passenger cars.
with your "mercilessly retaliate" logic, i should equip my car with BB guns that auto-aim with a photosensitive sensor to shoot any SUV or HID headlight that happens to cause me glare.
it's rediculous, and as cool as loud horns are, i'm not going to be putting 4 of them on my car. ever.
University students, or anyone for that matter, shouldn't stand or cross on a blind turn. Especially if there's a set of traffic lights to guide you. Three people were just hit this way by a friend in a WRX. I would have been blasting Supertones around that corner. It was a Friday night, laden with parties, the driver wasn't under the influence, but who knows who else was..

what i'm trying to say is that as a motorist you have a duty to AVOID ROAD HAZARDS.
be this debris, wild animals, or bad/aggressive drivers, it's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to avoid them. that doesn't mean it's always your fault if you don't, but it is NOT your goal to honk your horn, it is your goal to avoid the accident. are factory horns sufficient for aiding in this purpose? yes. they're designed to and if someone else can't hear them because of their stereo or screaming twin children, that's their fault not yours. fighting fire with fire does not work.
if you need horns to avoid hazards, you are the lowest form of driver.
for god's sake, learn some advanced defensive driving skills and take the high road on this matter. airhorns aren't the answer, and while i preach the high road, i'm more than inclined to do serious damage to people who run louder than necessary forms of horn on their cars or trucks.

The ultimate reason for louder horns is if you believe that horns are a safety device, rather than a means of retribution. I think the brake pedal, in a traffic situation where someone is about to jam it into a lane, is more effective than any horn, frankly. I'd rather not honk and brake than honk and...well...who knows?
But sometimes a car doesn't have the loudest horns. The WRX horns are excellent. I just got a Legacy GT, and the horns are significantly softer than the WRX's. In these days of loud car audio and inattentive drivers, sometimes a honk can avoid a bad situation.

I'm not arguing that point, but i am arguing the point that a stock honk will work in 90% of the situations you need it for.
i'm sorry if i've been missing the point all along .. but these hella supertones.. is the whole point just to make someone that you perceive as an aggressive driver go deaf?
i mean, i don't want to step on anybody's toes who like the supertones, but i see a lot of people getting flamed for wanting a different wing on their wrx or some different tail lights, but it seems widely accepted to have a car that's as loud as a 747 taking off ;p
Its part of defensive driving ... defensive driving is good

don't confuse defensive driving with horn intimidation. proper defensive driving means that you never even have to use the horn.

do you know how to read? i'm saying stock horns are sufficient and horns that are louder than stock aren't necessary... not all horns aren't necessary.

That's fine, I respect that opinion. No problems.
However, I've had 2 drivers fall asleep at the wheel and drift into my lane, and at least 6 that didn't look and just shifted lanes. My stock horn did nothing.
To each their own. If I was just around town, small town, no-where-ville, I probably wouldn't do it. However, the traffic and morons that I drive with require a little extra help with things. I don't need 4, but the 2 I have sitting in my garage will do me just fine.

Word. My daily drive is all freeway driving with a 70 mile round trip. That means alot of people that could potentially do something that me and/or my car wouldn't appreciate. Better overprepared than not prepared at all.
[i too would rather brake instead of honk, heck, i do it all the time. but once i'm out of harms way i have no problem laying on the horn.] ;)

unabomber, thats funnier than some of the ot stuff. I want to get them too, they look cool through the grill... I feel that this would be a dangerous upgrade for me as I would drive around and just honk the horn all the time.

I dunno about that Handsdown......before I installed my Supertones I had at least 5 instances where the stockers were completely ineffective. I'm a non confrontational typa guy, and would rather just change lanes than deal with some numbskull cutting me off.....but after a few calls that were just too close for comfort I wired up the Hellas in place of the OE horns. I've not had any more instances of people failing to see or hear me. Coincidental? Maybe, but it seems unlikely to me.
While I don't use my horns to try and assault anyone in any way, shape, or form, I definitely feel they've helped the "visibility" of my car and made certain potentially dangerous situations easier/safer to drive away from. Just my .02.

I agree with both camps here to a point. I think in some instances if you have them just for pure annoyance it's not the right reason to use them. Most of these drivers that have no respect for other cars on the road also have no respect for other people and after being blasted by the loud horns will 80% of the time probably try to cause you to crash into them. But on the other hand I have been in situations where I've needed to blast horns for saftey reasons on the highway and I feel that our stock horns are just to wimpy and not quite the right tone. You ever heard a park ave honk at you? Nice loud low tone much better than the stock wrx. Best advise is if you drive on the highway might be a good option. If you just want it to piss off other drivers then use them at your own risk and duck when they pull out a weapon or stop short in front of you.
This all said can you wire up just one of the hella's? and maybe just use the second for the alarm horn? I would like this option because I for one think two is a bit much for all the city driving I do.

i realize my arguements have been more absolute than is necessarily fair or true...
i should say that 4 hella supertones are more than anyone's going to need in most circumstances, and 2 is helpful for highway driving, but not always necessary.
4 just screams annoyance, though.
i'd like to hear the difference between 1, 2, and 4.

I would agree that 4 is a little over the top for normal street driving. after looking at the sites listed above it appears that you can order many different hella horns that would be an upgrade over stock, but not quite wake the dead loud. I will be looking into this option further maybe there is a happy medium somewhere..

No, no, no. I know someone that hit three pedestrians in their car, not mine.
It would be nice if things like that didn't happen, so if someone can't check before doing something like that (i.e. crossing the street on a blind turn), I'd like them to hear me.
Secondly, I wouldn't mercilessly retaliate for something, thank God I'm not like some of my "friends" who'd do it for no apparent (or significant) reason to no end.
I'm just tired of SUVs coming up/down my road halfway over the double yellows when they can't see me coming. There was just a head-on collision in front of my development because of this.. Jesus..
I promise I'm neither irresponsible or callous. But it doesn't matter. This is a message board.
