GST Motorsports to Campaign Subaru Impreza in 2006 NASA "25-Hours of
Thunderhill" Severe Endurance Race

HAYWARD, CA (November 23nd, 2006) GST Motorsports, GOTO:Racing, and Grassroots Motorsports are joining forces to enter the 2006 NASA 25-Hours of Thunderhill Severe Endurance Race, campaigning a Subaru Impreza modified to take advantage of the liberal ES class rules.
GST Motorsports is a new company serving racers and performance drivers, with experience building and tuning engines for teams running in Speed World Challenge GT, Grand Am Cup, U.S. Touring Car Championship, U. S. Pro-Rally, and California Rally Series, in addition to Time Attack cars, club racers, daily driven track cars, and even stock street cars," explains Mike Warfield, owner of GST Motorsports. "This effort is our first in-house effort, tying together everything we've learned over the years of building and tuning engines for professional race teams with our chassis setup and race strategy experience gained supporting GOTO:Racing in the Grand Am Cup series."
In a bid for the overall podium, the team's driving roster will include a driver line up brimming with top class talent stemming from Grand Am Cup to World Challenge TC and coupled with plenty of endurance experience. As of Nov 27, the driving line up is as follows:
Brian Lock (Grand-Am Cup, USTCC)
Christian Miller (Speed World Challenge TC)
Chris Lock (Grand-Am Cup, USTCC)
J.G. Pasterjak (25 Hours of Thunderhill, GRM Production Director)
Mike Lock (West Coast Honda Challenge)
Likewise, GOTO:Racing's experienced racing crew will join GST Motorsports shop mechanics to provide support throughout the grueling 25 hour event. The crew, shop mechanics, and team drivers have been working together since September to make sure they are ready to tackle the premier class of the endurance neo-classic 25 Hours of Thunderhill.
Grassroots Motorsports is the how-to magazine for the new breed of racer and enthusiast. The magazines articles cover the entire world of amateur motorsports, from autocrossing to rallying and racing, as well as descriptions, tips, and tricks for souping up your own race or track car. In 2005, GRMs 25-Hour effort was sidelined by technical problems. This year, GRM hopes to turn the wick up to 11 with GST-Motorsports and GOTO:Racing.
GOTO:Racing currently campaigns a Subaru Legacy in Grand Am Cup, and has been able to achieve two top-10 finishs (5th place, Miller Motorsports Park and 6th place, Laguna Seca), win the Bernheim Improve Your Position Award (Laguna Seca), turn the fastest laps of the race(Phoenix, Miller), and generally finish in the top half of the field for the season, in their first year in the series.
The 25-Hours of Thunderhill is the ultimate test of car and team, where reliability is critical and better fuel management, careful tire wear planning, and judicious pit strategy can enable teams to pass opponents by pitting fewer times. GST Motorsports and GOTO:Racing team members bring with them experience from several previous 25-Hour events, with finishes at the top of their classes as well as on the overall podium.
GST Motorsports is based out of Hayward, California. The company owns a 5000 sq-ft shop space with a state of the art 4-wheel Mustang chassis dynamometer, Hunter laser alignment rack, several lifts, and a full clean room for motor assembly, and complete fabrication capabilities. GST Motorsports is expanding its business and welcomes new customers with any racing, track day, or street car needs.
GST Motorsports, GOTO:Racing, and Grassroots Motorsports are entering the 2006 25-Hours of Thunderhill with support from several of their long term corporate partners, including

Oh man, hopefully there's a 6MT in there or the tranny will probably be subject to a fat reliability question mark. Is GST motorsports a new shop composing of the mechanics and tuners who left Gruppe-S? If so, do they have a website?

Good luck guys, nice to see an old-school soobie out there. We are running a 94 Leg Turbo in PTD next season in NASA-MA and NE and will likely go to nationals with it. Maybe we'll try to do the 25hrs next year in 08.

There is. The whole car is essentially sourced from an STI(tranny, uprights, axles, etc). Really the only thing on it that shares a part # with the original car is the unibody, and even sizeable amounts of that was cut out.

4 of us actually :). And don't forget "Dad" Lock. I think Brian and I are just more visible and vocal. Mike is an accomplished racer and fabricator and is a major hand in all our builds. David prefers to stay off the track and help out behind the scenes. He usually does IT and data aquisition.
I guess my dads logic is that it cost less to spawn a race team than hire one...

Just saw a screen of the leaderboard. Bad picture but it looks like GOTO is 31st overall at the 20 hour mark, 8th in class, 80 laps behind the leader, 19 out of 7th. Fast lap for them was a 2.08.752. Leader in class is turning about the same.
Top three are 1. Newer Porsche 2. Older Porsche 3. BMW diesel
Fast lap is 1.48.xxx
This was from a photo of a position screen so it might not be correct.

All of that information was correct, except our fast lap was set by Brian on lap 3, and it was a 1:59.9x. We qualified the car 4th overall, then ran in third for the first hour, dicing with the BMW Diesil entry until the first of many mechanicals reared their ugly heads.
The GST guys are totally incredible. They were doing some amazing work, and were determined to keep us in the race. Unfortunately, during J.G.'s stint(hour 3), our aftermarket up-pipe MELTED. That was the nail in our coffin. We did not anticipate such a failure. The guys went to work and fabbed one from SCRATCH there in the paddock, and worked till 5am to make sure the car could take some laps the next day. I got back in the car around the wee hours, amazed at the work they had done.
Even with all the chassis issues and bugs we were tackling, we are very proud of the 4th place qualifying and the overall speed of the car. This 25 became a big test day for us, but really gave us the motivation to continue the develolpment of the "old skool" car for next year. The car is going back to GST tommorow and the work begins. Items on the todo list include widebody kit, improved turbo cooling ducts, redesigned custom up/down pipes, and rear suspension re-design. Yeah, will post pics just like we did the original build.
I will save the details for the Grassroots article, and not steal JG's thunder.

Ridiculously impressive guys. I'm curious how the Hydra worked out for you as well as what you were using for materials in the up pipe. As for the widebody, I'd recommend switching to 5x114.3 hubs if you haven't already. Wide 5x100 rims are difficult and expensive to find.

Mike W reported no problems whatsoever with the hydra, and was able to get gobs of power from the Cosworth with it. I never asked what the final tune made, but I heard 360ftlbs floating around this weekend. From a drivers perspective, it just had a thick, meaty, torque band from 3000-redline. You never ran out of power, just gear. Quite an eye opener.
The up-pipe materials were called into question by that failure. It was SUPPOSED to be stainless(pulled from an old project car, I think), but the fab guys said the way it flaked and melted indicated mild steel. So now they are just going to fab their own stainless one and remove the guesswork.

Just found this thread...
Sucks about the wheel bearing and exhaust... But not bad for a car that took such a short time to build! :)
Need to find a way to raise the suspension geometry and get that widebody on there too...
Does the car have a nickname yet? :p

The other GOTO entry was an E2 class Acura Integra. At about 5am we were second in class and gaining on 1st. With the GOTO:Racing 25 hour luck, we spun in some oil in turn 14 (a blind turn) and were wacked by a car that did not slow down for the yellow. That totaled the car and both of our cars were done.

racing around the upper california valley, the cars were on my mind so much, I RAN OUT OF GAS!
but, when i called in, and heard about the uppipe, i then was no longer in a rush I guess.
It was great to help out the little I could, and it was great to work with Tucker and Joel on trying to frankenstien a hub, bearing fix for our issue. But the up pipe wasn't going to be fixable, which sucked.

It was great to help out the little I could, and it was great to work with Tucker and Joel on trying to frankenstien a hub, bearing fix for our issue. But the up pipe wasn't going to be fixable, which sucked.

Hello,
Hahaha... the up-pipe was totally fixable! We got it going again, we just weren't sure that the Honda exhaust that we butchered into an up-pipe would last very long because the turbo wasn't supported by brackets and that's a lot of stress on the up-pipe, especially since the flange pieces were still made of that low grade mild steel.
The real question was the rear wheel bearing. We used an outer race that was previously being used as a bearing press tool, two used inner races (that had been tossed because the bearings were bad), and used needle bearings. We just looked through the pile of garbage that we had, found the best looking parts, used steel wool to clean things up, and assembled the bearings using some unknown "yes it's good grease" stuff that we borrowed from another team.
That was quite the wheel bearing... so we didn't want to drive the car too many hours on that bearing. It felt "ok" but not great when we tested the bearing by hand...
We had Chris go out and drive easy to test the bearing and up-pipe. He went out and turned 5 laps (stating that he was driving at about 7/10ths, as we requested), running about a 2:10-2:12 pace (faster than many of the teams) :P The car felt great and we all felt terrible asking him to come in and let the car sit around until the end of the race.
Christian got in and we let him loose for 15-20 minutes near the end of the race. He pushed a 2:02 pace and even got a little silly, doing a little of that tail-happy driving. When he came in to let Brian take over for the rest of the race (another 15-20 minutes), I tested the wheel bearing and found the tire to be in the 240-degree range. Hahahal.... I guess the bearing was holding up well. Brian went out and started trying to work on breaking 2:00 again. It was going great until...
Well, instead of ruining the story, I should let y'all read the rest when it's published. :D

GST Motorsports Team,
Congratulations for such a great effort. Im sure youll rebound at the next event but its amazing how well the car ran with such limited prep time. Thanks for allowing Element Tuning and the Hydra EMS the opportunity to contribute towards your effort.
Thanks,
Phil Grabow

Well, personally, i just can't call such an uppipe "fixed", so, I guess to be PC, it's was definitely temporary! :D
But, to be honest, it looked great for what it was.

I just finished reading that article lastnight, that was a pretty go piece. Next time, find a Journalist that's not a Johna. ;)
As a side note, Subys showed up a lot in that issue.
