Hella Horn Installed: Unimpressed

I had the installation done today and I got to say I wasn't impressed. I purchased the Hella Horn #HL85115 (Hella Supertone Horn Kit).
Its just isn't loud at all. Yes, its louder than the stock horn but its not as loud as some of people may describe. Maybe I am expecting too much from an electric horn.
Anyway, since its cheap, I think its ok.

why you want a loud horn?
i never use my horn at all

Well, I never use my horn also. I super seldom use my horn but I hook my horn to my alarm and I want a loud sounding alarm

you need a relay or something like that to make them really loud. im sure someone will post up in a lil bit with what you need exactally.
| Donzo | 06-27-2006 03:06 AM |
yea I met a kid that had them in his STi and he said he rewired them with a thicker wiring and relayed them. They were super loud. I didn't want to buy these from the mixed responses I hear from people but after hearing his, I may just get them and rewire them as well. From what he said, it's very simple to do.

These things are murder if you are infront of the car. Stand in front of the car and set your alarm off.
I do that on accident from time to time and it's almost disorienting.

You probably were sitting in the car honking them... they are directional so you need to be directly in front of them to get the effect. Stand in front and set off the alarm, and get back to me.

of course they aren't loud. You bought the version made made in India versus the ones made in Germany.

People refuse to use the relay. Do you think it would be in the box if you didn't need it? I'm sure its 5 cents these companies would rather save then give you.

^^ +12345 I've read a lot of people that said the 04+ have better wiring and don't need the extra relay, i say extra because if you unhook the horns and honk you can hear the relay under the dash flipping.. why hook a relay to another.. it may make a minor difference but it really won't be noticeable unless you're going from shat shat wire to outstanding..
Anyone that stands in front of the horns goes 'EHH.. AHH' cuz it does hurt and I agree 100% with 18 wheeler death avoidance, blue-hair incompetence punishment aka death, and LOUD HORNs = LOUD ALARM.. people wll not just brush off ur alarm if these things are screaming..

Like others said, they are directional. Use the relay and then stand infront of the car and have someone honk them. They are loud and they are very effective on the road. People will move out of your way.
First time I used them was an on-ramp by work when I was going home. Someone cut across traffic and cut infront of me while doing 25mph and I almost rear ended them. Let the Hella's loose for 15 seconds and they pulled over and waved at me to go by

The relay does NOT make it any louder.
I'm impressed with the volume, but i HATE the pitch. They don't sound "strong".
Too high sounding for me, they do scare people with the volume, but again, they need to be lower. They'd be good in Europe, but here, they are just too high pitch to sound mean....
Can't be that upset, they keep the left lane clear...

People keep saying this. Its a DG 12 volt automotive relay. There's nothign special about it.
I started on the stock relay, switched to the supplied relay (which made 100% NO DIFFERENCE in sound), after 15k, the SUPPLIED relay took a dump, and I"ve been on the stock relay for the past 20k miles...

They are directional... park your car in front of a wall and honk, the echo will be loud enough... The sound is kinda unorthodox, it is unique though... If you just want a loud horn sound get an airhorn, they sound better too...

"Use the relay" is shorthand for "power the horns off a separate circuit hooked to +12V and ground with thicker-than-OEM wiring." The relay itself may be nothing special, but the OEM wiring is typically marginal for its intended use, and can cause significant resistance (and thus reduced sound) with a higher-current horn(s).
Similarly, headlight brightness can be increased (at least on MY02-03) by using a thicker-gauge wiring harness to power the headlights.

Just an idea, I was a member of www.jeepforum.com and they had all types of crazy horns they would install on their Jeeps. Try doing a quick search on there. I remember they were using air horns, to boat horns, to big rig horns lol Some of them require an on board air compressor however. If I find the link I'll post it up here.

Wow, mine are definitely loud. I wired it up with instructions I found here on NASIOC. Battery -> Relay -> Horns -> Ground plus other wiring, like horn switch.
It's only a bit louder inside the cabin, but it makes people on the receiving end poop their pants.
You should have looked for instructions and done it yourself.
"had it installed"

The 85115 are 118 db at 2m. High tone is 500 Hz, Low tone is 300 Hz
Made in Germany. For $56
The 85315 are Hella Designed, German Engineered
113 db loudness $43.45 (guessing this is the India version)
The third is $65 with the same stats as 85115 with no number, I didnt check hellas site tho

People, as said before, do not install these horns drawing currnt from the stock circuit. I wired mine using amp wires directly to the battery and I'll tell you if you put your head close to the grill you'll probably have a ring in your ear for an hour.

I'm not sure if I've heard just the Hellas, by themselves. So I'm not absolutely sure on volume.
Mine are hooked up in ADDITION to my stock horns, which turns out to be pretty darn loud.
I used it just last week, on a jaywalker.
She's crossing a four lane road. 45mph speed limit. And she's just taking a leisurely walk. Traffic has to slow down for her.
It must have been my best example of money well spent so far, because she popped straight up in the air when I let her have it with the Hellas.

One thing to remember about these horns. They are much louder with the car running than with it off. Car running is ~14V and the car off is closer to 12V. Power is proportional to the square of voltage, so from 12V to 14V is about a 36% increase in power. Or conversely, the car off power is only 73% of the car on power. Whether the sound pressure / level directly varies with the electrical power applied is another story. (I'm an electrical engineer, and have little knowledge of acoustics.) I've tested car on vs car off and you can definitely tell a difference.
