How To Refinish your Calipers (Brembo) part 1

How To Refinish your Calipers (Brembo)
These directions are for if your calipers are beyond touch-up, or if you want to change their color. If you just want to touch up your calipers, the best paint is honda inca pearl, paint code Y61P, part number 08703 Y61PPAH (thanks quaam for the info).

I just refinished some brembo's that I had purchased that were in pretty bad shape. I thought I would share with the others what I found out while I did it. There are other ways out there to do it, but if you are missing alot of paint, it is easier to strip all the paint off (it will provide a smoother final look then just sanding).

First, I stripped the calipers totally apart. I did this for 2 reasons. First, they were used, and I wanted to replace all the seals anyways and this way I could assure myself they were in good shape internally. Second, it just makes it MUCH easier to refinish them. The seal kit is ~80 from subaru, and you will need one (one kit is enough for both calipers) if you follow my steps and take them all apart.

Second, go to autozone (or any car parts store) and purchase a can of aircraft paint stripper. This stuff burns like hell if you get it on your skin, so make sure you wear gloves (dish washing gloves work well). If you do get it on your skin, water will wash it off in quick order.

This stripper is best applied with a brush, dabbing it on really thick. Let it sit for about 20-30 minutes per application, and the paint will just wash off with the hose. You will have to do this a few times, but it will get 100% of the paint off.

Here is the real kicker. It will NOT remove the underlaying coating (which I now know is hard anodizing to protect the caliper)!. No worries about wearing through the coating. The stripper left 100% of the coating untouched!. Once you get them all clean and free of paint, towel dry them, and sit them aside to dry overnight.

When you go to paint them, make sure you plug up all the threaded holes with some paper towel or something. You will want to put this thing back together again at some point!. Spray the calipers down with some brake cleaner to degrease them, and wipe them with a lint free cloth to make sure they are super clean before you paint.

I used VHT caliper and drum paint. It is good for up to 1200 degrees (the duplicolor 2 part paint is only good for under 400 degrees). It comes in a spray can. Do thin coats, and apply the coats 20 minutes apart from each other. Once you get enough paint on them (I needed 2 cans of paint for the front calipers), sit them aside overnight.

If you are happy with how they look, go ahead to the next step (baking), if you are not, then do this. Find some 350-400 grit sandpaper and wet sand the calipers down til they are smooth (make sure the paint is really dry before attempting to sand it, I ended up baking my calipers before this step for about 1 hour at 170 just to firm up the paint). You might have some edges that show bare caliper (you will have removed all the new paint), but that is ok. Once you get them smooth you can spray them with water, dry them, then wipe down with rubbing alcohol, then wipe them down with a lint free cloth. Once you have the sanding residue removed, you can put another few coats of paint on the calipers.

The next step is critical. On the VHT website it says if you want maximum durability and chemical resistance, you need to cook the calipers in your oven. They recommend 120 degrees for 1 hour, I did 170 (as low as my oven goes) for about 3 hours. Just remember, this is FAR less heat then your calipers will see on a track or such, and since they are totally taken apart, no need to worry about seals or such.

Once you get them baked, let them cool and re-assemble as you see fit. This should provide you with a VERY good coating on your brakes, and I found it easier then roughing up the paint with sand paper.

This is how they started out:

FYI, the black coating underneath is not a "ceramic heat coating" but a hard anodizing to harden the surface of the piston bores, resisit corrosion and to act as a primer for better paint adhesion. It can be removed from the caliper body and not cause any issues, but it should be left intact inside of the piston bores. We use the same process on our StopTech calipers.

For what its worth, Im doing the same process on a set of STi rear calipers that our paint shop is painting to match my front BBK using the same process with great success. And no we wont offer this service...I had to beg and plead to get mine done.

nice write-up. But like the others where are the pics?
nater 08-26-2006 08:17 AM

I will get some this weekend. I wrote that up while I was at work, and did not have the brakes with me. Today I am installing a clutch in my friends STi, so that will pretty much wipe the day. Here are the brakes when I started with them:

I will post my pics when they are done but at this point I have only stripped the outer half of the calipers...still need to strip the inner halves and get them painted.

.....
nater 08-26-2006 07:12 PM

I have the final coat going on tomorrow morning, then I will post pics. Yes, I got a killer deal on them. 2 sets of pads, rotors, and the calipers for $200 plus my stock front brakes. I found that to be a damn good deal...

That is the way I got the calipers. The seller was totally open about their condition when I got them. I can deal with cosmetics. All I cared about is that the pistons and bores were in good shape (which they are). I can paint.

Hey nater -- some quick questions about the seal kit:

- Does it come with the grease required to lubricate the piston boot? The FSM specs NIGLUBE RX-2 (Part No. K0779GA102). If not, can I substitute something else? I never hold out much hope of sourcing the stuff that FHI seems to use...
- Do you need 1 kit for each caliper? Or is 1 kit sufficient for both calipers?

Thanks!

Another question (in addition to post #19 above): did you take the caliper halves apart? I'm really reluctant to do this, since I haven't been able to find a torque spec for these bolts. Anyone here know what it might be?

1 kit is enough for both calipers. You can either lube the boot with brake fluid, or if you have some (or feel like going to napa) some stuff called sil-glide.

I did split them, it makes it easier to take the pistons etc out and makes it easier to paint. When I put them back together I just put them together tight. I did not find a torque spec, and I asked the local mechanic at the subaru dealer who is their top guy (and a nice guy) and he just said "good and snug"

FWIW, here's the VHT FAQ:

http://www.speco.com.au/vht_faq.html

Of special note: "Apply multiple coats in less than 1 hour or after 24 hours. Coats sprayed between this period may wrinkle, not adhere or not dry properly."

Yep, and the can states that 20 minutes is the ideal time between coats if you cant wait 24 or more hours.

If you want to touch up the stock gold, the best color is the honda Inca mica gold (or something like that). You will see the color on ugly civics, but it is the best color match. Think it was on cars around 2002 or so.
ProdriveRex 09-18-2006 03:50 PM

There are a few companies online that sell touch-up paint and will put it in spray cans for you. You can also find some local body shops that will mix some up for you and put it in a can.

Nice work OP.

the name for the touch up paint from honda is honda inca pearl, paint code Y61P, part number 08703 Y61PPAH
snowcrzy 10-17-2006 01:51 AM

I ordered some brembos with some slight scuffs and scratches on them so I am going to paint them.

I would prefer not taking them apart so I don't have to spend the extra money to put them back together, what would be the process if you leave them together?

Do one side then do the other?

And, as far as the brembo logo goes, I want white letters on black calipers. Would it be better to paint that area white first, then put the sticker over it and paint it black? then once done remove the stickers? or would it just be better to go with some stickers?

thanks
what would be the process if you leave them together?
1) Remove caliper & plug the brake hose hole.
2) Clean & wetsand smooth. If you are not planning on replacing the seals then I would stay far away from paint stripper.
3) Clean them even more. Preparation is key.
4) Mask off pistons & boots.
5) Paint
6) Reinstall
7) Bleed brakes

You should be able to get away with using decals. However, if you drive the car hard you should prbably clear coat over them to avoid any issues with peeling.

When I did my 4-pots, I found the best way to paint the front calipers was to build a stand for them. Check it out:

ok, another question. Mine are pretty beat up, nothing too bad except for one front rotor. It is like 3 chips in it. I can sand them down but I would prefer not changing the shape of the caliper. Could I use some jb weld and then sand that down???

also, do I need to prime the calipers?
